Nomar Garciaparra heads to TV studio after retiring -- as a Red Sox

From: http://content.usatoday.com/

Nomar Garciaparra, whose career tailed off because of injuries after leaving Boston, retired after 14 seasons today, signing a one-day contract with the Red Sox before heading for the TV studio.

By Jim Rogash, AP
"My tank's empty," Garciaparra said at a news conference in Fort Myers, Fla., shown on MLB.com. "It wouldn't have felt like a retirement if I couldn't have put this uniform on one more time."

The two-time American League batting champion will now don a jacket and tie as a member of ESPN's baseball crew, appearing mostly on Baseball Tonight.

Garciaparra, a six-time All-Star, says in recent years he's spent more time talking to younger players. Working on TV, he says, "is another way to pass on the knowledge. … I love talking about the game."

The infielder, who played 8 1/2 seasons in Boston before a 2004 trade to the Chicago Cubs, was a reserve for the Oakland Athletics last year, appearing in just 65 games, hitting .281 with three home runs and 16 RBI. He also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I hope to have a long career in broadcasting," Garciaparra said. "But it's not easy, and I've never thought it was." As potential role models on TV, he cites Harold Reynolds and Orel Herchiser as having done "a tremendous job" on-air.

Garciaparra, 36, exits with a .313 career batting average, with 229 homers, 936 RBI and six All-Star game selections, five as a shortstop for the Red Sox.

A Georgian woman is claiming to be the oldest person in the world. Her birth documents show that she was born on July 8 1880 and will turn 130 this summer.

Antisa Khvichava, who lives in a remote village in Georgia, enjoys playing backgammon and drinking vodka.

Georgian authorities have applied to the Guinness Book of World Records claiming that she is the oldest person in the world.

If her birth documents prove to be genuine, she will take the record from a 114-year-old woman in Japan.

Wii workouts: best of the games

These four top personal training videos can get you moving and into shape quickly.

When Nintendo's Wii console came out, couch potatoes across the country rejoiced. Here was a way to get in shape and play video games at the same time! But the bowling, tennis and other early sports titles ultimately delivered less-than-challenging workouts.

Several years later, the Wii has become a more legitimate fitness tool, with a number of personal training titles that promise to burn fat and build muscle.

Not all of them deliver. Some are too easy, too boring or just too repetitive. And working out with the Wii requires more of an initial learning curve than simply mirroring a fitness DVD. Not only must you concentrate on proper form, you have to make sure your Wiimote is pointing in the right direction or your workout will grind to a halt.

On the plus side, personal training games are much more interactive than a fitness DVD, allowing you to customize your workout, music and intensity depending on how you feel on any given day. Your digital coach will encourage you, chastise you when you slack off and drive you to beat your previous score —something a DVD can't do.

We reviewed the top personal training games for the Wii and chose four of the titles most likely to whip you into shape quickly.

EA Sports Active; and EA Sports Active: More Workouts

If nonstop squats and lunges make you yawn, this game is for you. It blends athletic-style training with short sports bursts such as jogging, rollerblading, basketball and tennis to keep you interested.

After creating your profile and on-screen doppelganger, you can choose a 30-day get-in-shape, circuit-training challenge or pick from a large number of preset cardio and toning workouts of different lengths (rated from easy to hard).

The workouts — led by a picture-in-picture trainer — are challenging enough, and each exercise is broken down in a video before you start each move. Of course, this makes the workout longer, but it's necessary — at least at first — for form and so you know how to position the Wiimote on each move.

If you don't get that direction right, or if you don't pause long enough at the top of a rep, the game will freeze until you correct it. It's frustrating that there's more emphasis on form with the controller than on how you should tuck your hips or position your legs.

During the workout, your trainer urges you on with a few stock comments such as "Great enthusiasm on that exercise. Way to work it!" There's also feedback and a calorie count estimate at the end.

A Velcro leg strap sold with the game holds the required nunchuk controller during running and lower body work. The strength moves use an included resistance band, and the game is compatible with the Wii Balance Board (sold separately).

Once you have this equipment and are ready for some new exercises, you might be motivated to move on to EA Sports Active: More Workouts, the update (without leg strap and band) released in November.

List price for EA Sports Active: $59.99; EA Sports Active: More Workouts: $39.99

The Biggest Loser

If you're inspired to get into shape by the miraculous transformations on the popular NBC show "The Biggest Loser," you'll like this in-home version from THQ.

In this game, you'll work out with one of its popular trainers — Bob Harper or Jillian Michaels — to meet the fitness goals you set in your profile. Each week there's a competitive weigh-in on the Wii Balance Board to motivate you to "bring it" and "dig deeper" in your workouts.

There isn't the same variety of activities and scenery that you find in EA Sports, but its digital trainers provide a greater range of encouragement, prodding and verbal coaching on form.

The workout moves a little faster too, because you don't have to wade through tutorial videos before starting each exercise. You simply mimic your trainer and listen to his or her cues on form and timing. You can also create custom routines from 88 exercises and pull up recipes from "The Biggest Loser Cookbook."

No weights or resistance bands are needed. All of the toning is accomplished by lifting your own body weight in exercises such as planks, push-ups, squats and lunges. You can compete against another player or previous contestants from the show in special challenges. But as with most Wii fitness games, you can't put too much stock in the calorie counts tallied up at the end.

After a 40-minute workout that left this intermediate exerciser breathless and breaking a sweat, it said I burned a whopping 48 calories.

List price: $39.99

Wii Fit Plus

Wii Fit, the pioneering workout game for the Wii, was updated by Nintendo in October to include more exercises and games, and the option to create customized routines.

Not all of the activities are a slam-dunk if you want to get in shape. Many of the "Training Plus" activities challenge your balance but don't provide a good cardiovascular or strength workout.

And many of the aerobic activities, such as Basic Step, won't provide enough of a workout for anyone beyond a beginner. What you will find, however, are solid yoga and strength moves, and a few fun heart-rate elevating games to play with your character or "Mii," such as Super Hula Hoop, Rhythm Kung Fu and Bird's-Eye Bulls-Eye, a game that has you flapping your arms in a chicken suit to hit targets.

Your time and calorie count are tallied at the end, and you can weigh yourself on the Balance Board to track your progress.

List price: $19.99

Your Shape

This title, from Ubisoft, led by a digital version of actress Jenny McCarthy, rates a mention largely because it's the first to use a motion-detecting camera on top of your television to track your movements, allowing you to exercise without a controller.

Your image is projected onto the screen next to McCarthy's avatar, allowing you to check out your form as you might in the mirror at your gym. It doesn't require any special equipment but will work with your own weights, stability ball and step bench if you have them.

It also has the largest number of exercises — more than 400 — to burn fat and build and stretch your muscles.

Sounds great, right? While wonderful in concept, it doesn't work so well in practice. The video lags a bit, making you work harder to keep pace with your trainer. And you need to have enough room to keep your arms and legs within frame — about 8 feet from the TV.

When the camera can't detect your movements because your feet or arms move out of frame or the background is too dark, you will be told that you're doing the exercise wrong, and annoying on-screen messages flash to "Follow me."

If you're going to use this game, you‘ll just have to expect that it won't recognize your moves correctly for a certain percentage of the time. If you can get past that, you'll get a good heart-pumping workout that exercises multiple muscle groups simultaneously. And, if you decide you don't like the game, that wide-angle Web-compatible camera works pretty well for those Skype sessions.

List price: $69.99

It's On Like Donkey Kong: New York Doc Sets World Record

All hail the new king

By HASANI GITTENS
FROM http://www.nbcnewyork.com/

Getty Images

He's the new king of Kong.

New York City's own Hank Chien, a 35-year-old plastic surgeon based in Queens has just been crowned the Lord of the Barrels -- having just set a new world record in the classic arcade game Donkey Kong.

Chien's score, 1,061,700 points racked up in just 2 hours and 35 minutes was verified by Twin Galaxies, the official keepers of DK records since 1981.

Chien surpassed the men who inspired him: rabid gamers Steve Wiebe and Billy, whose rivalry was chronicled in the 2007 documentary "The King of Kong."

Donkey Kong champ Doctor Hank Chien

Hank Chien plays Donkey Kong at his home.

"Well basically, after I saw the documentary, started playing just for fun," Chien told NBCNewYork.com from his offices at Vogue Plastic Surgery in Flushing. "For a little over a year, maybe a year and three or four months."

Chien, a native of Forest Hills who know lives on the East Side of Manhattan said he started practicing in Barcade, Brooklyn's finest arcade-bar, sometimes playing three hours at a time.

"I improved very quickly," said Chien. "I collaborated with a lot of very good players -- now with the Internet you can talk to good players and share tips."

Eventually though, he had to move beyond Barcade's machine -- which isn't "official" because it plays both Donkey Kong and the less-popular Donkey Kong Jr.

"When things started getting serious I said enough is enough, I gotta buy my own machine."

After scouring eBay and Craigslist for about two months Chien found a DK machine in good quality for only about $400 (the surgeon said had to put in another $200 worth of "cosmetic" improvements after buying).

For his official run the dexterous doctor played on his own machine and ended the game on the famed "kill screen" glitch that does not allow play to continue. Officials from Twin Galaxies came to his house to make sure everything was on the up and up.

Chien's new scoring mark beats the 1,050,200 point record score set by Mitchell at the live event in Florida in July 2007 that was featured in the "King of Kong" movie.

The good doctor believes that there is a correlation between surgeons and video game players -- and was even part of a study in 2004 proving it.

"[But] I don't think that practicing video games will make you a good surgeon," he said. "It's more likely that people who have good hand eye coordination are good at both."

Brad Katsuyama, holding a receipt, and wife Ashley, become the world's first consumers to purchase a Panasonic Full HD 3D system at Best Buy in New York on Wednesday March 10, 2010.

NEW YORK—Panasonic Corp. on Wednesday revealed the price for its first 3-D TV set, confirming that $3,000 is about what it takes to be among the first to watch 3-D movies in the home.

The Japanese company put its first 3-D sets on sale at an event in New York on Wednesday. Panasonic's suggested retail price is $2,900 for a 50-inch plasma set, one pair of glasses and a 3-D Blu-ray player. An extra pair of glasses costs $150.

South Korean competitor Samsung Electronics Co. announced Tuesday that its 3-D sets would go on sale this week. For $3,000, buyers get a 46-inch set, two pairs of glasses, a 3-D Blu-ray player and a 3-D copy of "Monsters vs. Aliens." There's also a 55-inch set available -- it's $3,300 for the set alone.

Both manufacturers plan to expand their 3-D lines rapidly. Rivals are on their heels: LG Electronics Inc. plans to put its 3-D sets on sale in May and Sony Corp. is bringing out its 3-D sets this summer.

The sets can switch between 3-D and regular 2-D mode, which doesn't require glasses.

There's a dearth of movies on 3-D discs, but studios are rushing to put them out. On Wednesday, Twentieth Century Fox, the studio arm of News Corp., said it would make "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" its debut title in 3-D Blu-ray.

Rock Band to Release Cartman's "Poker Face"

Posted by: Matt Tobey

It was announced today that four Lady Gaga songs are being released in the Rock Band Music Store for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. And in a classic case of lead-burying, it was additionally revealed that Eric Cartman's version of Gaga's "Poker Face" would also be made available in the store. Of course, as exciting as this is, I'm pretty sure that if Lady Gaga herself ever sings Cartman's cover of her song, it will cause a temporal loop and tear apart the very fabric of space-time.

You can read the full press release here. The original clip from the show is below, but first here's the album cover:

Robert De Niro to play Vince Lombardi in ESPN film

robert de niro Robert De Niro to play Vince Lombardi in ESPN film

Robert De Niro is running to daylight.

The actor has become attached to play legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi in a biopic being developed by ESPN Films, Andell Entertainment and the NFL. Titled “Lombardi,” the project is being penned by “Forrest Gump” writer Eric Roth.

The film will focus on the years that Lombardi rebuilt the Packers into a gridiron powerhouse, and five-time champions, between 1959-67. The producers plan to release the film in late January 2012, between the AFC and NFC conference championship games and the Super Bowl.

De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca Prods. is producing along with ESPN Films, Andell, the NFL and Chris Olsen.

“There are few actors who could accurately portray the fire, passion and grit of Lombardi, and we’re thrilled to have Robert De Niro on our team,” said NFL vp programming Charles Coplin. “With the addition of De Niro, Eric and Tribeca Prods., we have a deep bench to produce a film worthy of the legendary coach and American icon.”

ESPN and Andell acquired life rights to Lombardi’s story from his estate and son Vincent Lombardi Jr., as well as the rights to the 1968 book “Instant Replay,” written by Dick Schaap and former Packer Jerry Kramer, who was a right guard and placekicker throughout Lombardi’s tenure.

“We’ve had an extraordinary relationship with ESPN for five years through the Tribeca Film Festival, and now we’re able to extend that association into production,” Rosenthal said.

CAA, which reps De Niro, Roth and Rosenthal, collaborates with ESPN Films on film projects. De Niro, also repped by manager Rick Yorn, has “Machete” (April), “Stone” (May) and the untitled “Meet the Fockers” sequel (December) scheduled for release this year.

Roth, who recently wrote “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” also penned the screenplay for De Niro’s 2006 drama “The Good Shepherd.”

S.Korea unveils 'recharging road' for eco-friendly buses

The Online Electric Vehicle (OLEV), towing three carriages, runs along a blue line under which power strips are buried for recharging, at an amusement park in Gwacheon, south of Seoul. S.Korean researchers launched an environmentally-friendly public transport system using a "recharging road" -- with a vehicle sucking power magnetically from buried electric strips.

South Korean researchers Tuesday launched an environmentally friendly public transport system using a "recharging road" -- with a vehicle sucking power magnetically from buried electric strips.

The Online Electric Vehicle (OLEV), towing three buses, went into service at an amusement park in southern Seoul. If the prototype proves successful, there are plans to try it out on a bus route in the capital.

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), which developed the system, says OLEV needs a only one-fifth the size of conventional and eliminates the need for major recharging.

It also avoids the need for overhead wires used to conventional trams or trolley buses.

Guests including Seoul mayor Oh Se-Hoon and KAIST president Suh Nam-Pyo were given a 2.2-kilometre (1.4-mile) ride Tuesday around the zoo at Seoul Grand Park.

Recharging strips have been installed in four segments totalling some 400 metres along the route.

Pick-up equipment underneath OLEV collects power through non-contact magnetic charging from strips buried under the road surface. It then distributes the power either to drive the vehicle or for battery storage.

If the system is used on Seoul bus routes, underground power lines would have to be installed on only 20 percent of the route at places like stops, parking places and intersections, KAIST said in a statement.

The technology was first developed in a project involving the University of California (Berkeley) but KAIST said that produced no tangible results.

The state-funded institute says it has applied for more than 120 patents in connection with OLEV, which it describes as safe, clean and economical.

"Of all the world's electric vehicles, this is the most economical system," Suh told reporters, adding the operating cost is only about one-third of ordinary electric vehicles.

"The potential for application (of this technology to systems) is limitless. I dare say this is one of the most significant technical gains in the 21st century," Suh said.

Suh said KAIST plans to use OLEVs to shuttle delegates at the G20 summit which Seoul will host in November.

Project director Cho Song-Ho said technical breakthroughs included an improved way of transmitting power to the pick-up device on the vehicle chassis.

Cho said a gap of at least 11 centimetres (4.4 inches) was needed to take account of bumpy roads, while OLEV can suck power across a gap of up to 25 cm.

Given a normal gap, the vehicle can turn more than 70 percent of the charge into energy for the vehicle, he said.

CBS Sports Will Telecast Men's Basketball Final Four Games in 3D

By Chris Littmann

By Eric Fisher, Staff Writer
SportsBusiness Journal

CBS Sports will show the semifinals and championship game of the NCAA men's basketball tournament in 3D, marking the network's first foray into 3D TV and the latest high-profile sports event to be shown in the enhanced format. The network has struck a deal with Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp. to show the Final Four games in 100 movie theaters nationwide, with pricing yet to be established. CBS additionally selected Pace, whose 3D involvement includes work with the NBA and the record-setting Hollywood epic "Avatar," to aid with the production, with the choice based significantly on the firm's prior background with shooting basketball in 3D. "This is another experiment. We're looking to learn as much as we can," said CBS Sports Senior VP/Operations & Production Ken Aagaard. Aagaard added the 3D production is a likely forerunner for future such efforts by the network in football.

CBS, meanwhile, has signed Capital One as the third presenting sponsor of March Madness on Demand, adding to AT&T and Coca-Cola. Capital One also recently signed with the NCAA as the newest corporate champion sponsor, joining AT&T and Coca-Cola. The network continues to project that MMOD advertising sales will finish well north of last year's $30M, though executives declined to disclose specifics.

Check Out The Secret McMenu Item That's Sweeping SF, The Mc10:35

(Peter)

Peter has stumbled upon a McDonald's secret menu item that can only be ordered during the changeover from breakfast to the standard menu. The Mc10:35 is the unholy but oh-so-hot union between the McDouble and Egg McMuffin.

He writes:

“I heard about this from a cashier at one of the local McDonald's. He said it's getting kind of a cult following in San Francisco.

1. Go to McD's right when they are transitioning from breakfast to lunch.

2. Order one of the remaining Egg McMuffins from the breakfast menu and also order a McDouble since the lunch menu is now open.

3. Take the egg and Canadian bacon from the Egg McMuffin and put it on the McDouble.

The guy at the register said people call it a Mc10:35 because that's pretty much the only time you can pull this off.

They're damn good when hungover!"

Pink Floyd, EMI Brawl Over iTunes Royalties

screen-shot-2010-03-09-at-105155-am

Pink Floyd and its label, EMI, are battling over online royalties stemming from a contested clause in their decade-old contract.

The developer of The Dark Side of the Moon and other top-selling albums claims its contract with EMI requires its music to be sold as an entire album, not the single tracks that EMI has permitted iTunes to distribute.

The band’s attorney, Robert Howe, told a London court on Tuesday, “It’s a matter of fact that the defendant has been permitting individual tracks to be downloaded online and that therefore they have been allowing albums not to be sold in their original configuration,” Bloomberg News reported.

The case highlights the common dispute between rights holders and publishers over how to deal today with royalties for intellectual property born and contracted prior to the explosion of online digital sales.

Pink Floyd, however, said more was at stake than royalties in the internet age. The psychedelic-music band’s musical craft is being misrepresented when sold in singles, Howe said.

“Pink Floyd is well-known for performing seamless pieces. Many of the songs blend into each other,” Howe told the High Court of Justice, Chancery Division.

EMI told the court that the restrictions do not apply to online sales.

When Pink Floyd’s latest contract was crafted in 1999, “iTunes didn’t even exist,” EMI attorney Elizabeth Jones said.

25 really weird - or really awesome - umbrellas

By: Scott Kleinberg

Usually, we just hope they don't break or we don't leave them on the bus. But there's more to umbrellas. Lots more.

During National Umbrella Month, lets take a look at some really weird - or awesome - ones.
