McDonald's drive through refuses to serve horse and cart couple, KFC less bothered

October last year, we brought you the news of a horse and its rider popping down to a Welsh branch of McDonalds for a couple of McSugar cubes. Last week, there was the story of another Welsh man trying to take a pregnant pony onto a train.

Today? It's a lady on a horse and cart who got turned away from a Derbyshire drive through – but managed to find a KFC who would serve her down the road.

McDonald's said no to Debbie Murden, 42, from Pinxton in Derbyshire, because of 'health and safety reasons' saying that they can only serve certain vehicles – not including horse and carts, it seems.

"They said it was dangerous," Debbie said. "I'm not sure who they meant it was dangerous for, them or us or other people in the drive-through. But there was no danger there."

"I got in touch with McDonald's head office and asked why, if horses and motorbikes are not allowed through, are there no signs to say so? And why is it different from branch to branch?"

"We're sorry to have disappointed Ms Debbie Murden and for any confusion caused," said a McDonald's spokesperson, adding: "The health and safety of our customers is our top priority and for this reason we are unable to serve customers in a horse-drawn carriage."

Ah, what party poopers these McDonald's types are. They should learn to enjoy horses, be they in cars, dragging people along on skateboards or boasting ludicrous names. They really are a fun animal, and no mistake.

Big Mac Attack: Man Eats 25,000th Burger

Fond du Lac, Wis. – How many Big Macs have you eaten in your lifetime? Well, a Wisconsin man knows exactly how many of the iconic burgers he’s scarfed down over the years, and the number will probably blow your mind.

A special ceremony was planned Tuesday afternoon at McDonald’s in Fond du Lac for Don Gorske. That’s because, since 1972, Gorske has eaten at least two Big Macs a day, which means the 57-year-old will be eating his 25,000th Big Mac on the 39th anniversary of eating his first.

The Fond du Lac man says he ate nine on May 17, 1972 and has only missed nine days since then, for various reasons.

He has kept most of the boxes or receipts or has made specific notes in calendars that he’s kept.
Gorske says he probably has an obsessive-compulsive disorder but he doesn’t consider it a problem.

He jokes that 25,000 is a milestone because people didn’t think he’d live this long. But he says he recently saw a doctor who said he was in good health and his cholesterol is low.

Finally the secrets behind the McDonald's best-selling Shamrock Shake have been revealed. Strangely, the bright green minty treat dates back to the 1970, and its story is based on charity.

The Shamrock Shake was developed in 1970, according to McDonald's. However, according to reports on Delish.com, Harold Rosen, who owned a McDonald's in Connecticut, claims he invented the popular holiday drink  in 1966.

The McDonalds website says, "It all began with a little girl, a football team, and a visionary doctor."

The Philadelphia Eagles tight end Fred Hill's daughter was diagnosed with leukemia and began treatment. The Hill family were camping out in waiting rooms in hospitals and saw other families doing the same. They realized that many families travelling long distances to visit their sick family members had nowhere to stay and could not afford hotel rooms. The Hill family did something about it.

Hill and his team decided to raise some funds. The team's general manager, Jim Murray, called a friend in McDonald's advertising and suggested the team on the next promotional push. It just happened to be St. Patrick's Day.

The Shamrock Shake raised enough money to buy a four-story house which was the first Ronald McDonald House Charity.

Imagine -- the Shamrock Shake now has 21,500 fans on Facebook and is second in popularity only to the McRib, and that sandwich had a "Simpsons" episode dedicated to it!

Love Among the Nuggets: McWeddings on the Rise in Hong Kong

In other countries, McDonald's franchises sell different things.  Big Macs are made with lamb in much of India.  In Greece, a Greek Mac consists of several smaller patties tucked into a pita.  In Hong Kong, you can get a burger sandwiched between compressed sheets of glutinous rice.  At a McDonald's in Hong Kong, you can also get married.

While they were quietly launched last January, "McWeddings" are quickly emerging as a fad among members of Hong Kong's young, fast-moving set.  The "Warm and Sweet Wedding Package" works out to a little over $1282 per service, a price that includes inexpensive wedding gifts, pink invitation cards branded, naturally, with the company's distinctive yellow arches, decorations featuring the Hamburglar and other iconic characters, and an unholy heap of McDonald's menu classics.  For an extra $165, the bride can rent a "white balloon" gown.  A balloon wedding cake will cost an additional $88.  For a bright pink McDonald's-themed backdrop, the couple must fork over a $321 supplement.

According to Reuters, "McWeddings" may actually make sense for cash-strapped lovers:

"With two wedding parties confirmed for this year and around 70 other couples in talks, the American fast food giant is hoping this sideline will take off at a time of economic uncertainty, particularly with traditional Chinese weddings and banquets often imposing a huge financial burden on young couples."

What we want to know is, a year from now, will the same franchises give these couples the opportunity to divorce with the same speed and ketchup-flecked cuteness with which they got hitched? We're thinking that each marriage should come with a coupon for divorce lawyers willing to work for unlimited shakes and half their normal hourly rates: if the coupon is redeemed before the 1st of the following year.
