An artist's impression of one of the two Mars rovers, which have been studying geological samples on the planet
It travelled at an average speed of 60cm an hour and it has arrived a year late. But the Mars rover Opportunity is finally approaching its destination, the rim of the vast Endeavour crater.
Nasa hailed the six-wheel Opportunity's approach to the 22.5km-wide crater last night as a "tremendous scientific success".
The ageing robotic field geologist has logged more than 32km since it was first parachuted on to the planet's surface in 2003, along with its twin rover Spirit, for a planned three-month mission after their 34 million-mile journey from Earth. Spirit emitted its last signal a year ago after becoming trapped in sand. Opportunity crawled out from a crater in 2008 and headed south to the Endeavour, a two-year journey in theory, which has taken longer because Opportunity had to drive backwards to prevent its front wheel from wearing out.
At the crater, Opportunity will travel south across the rim to perform a geological assessment of the location, examining the clay minerals formed under wet conditions at the oldest of the four craters it has visited.
The finishing point was nicknamed Spirit Point in honour of Opportunity's fallen twin. Scott Maxwell, leader of the Mars Rover driving team, tweeted: "The drive we uplink today will actually take us physically on to Cape York. So. *Freaking*. Excited."
Project manager John Callas, of the Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said that reaching the Endeavour crater was an important science target: "We will likely spend years at this location. It's not just one spot. There's kilometres of interesting geology to explore."
Endeavour is more than 25 times wider than the Victoria crater, an earlier stop that the rover examined for two years. Nasa believes Endeavour is much older. The minerals and sediments had previously only been viewed at a distance by orbiting spacecraft.
Mr Callas said: "It represents geology from very early in Mars history. It's understanding what happened to Mars a long time ago."
Both rovers have made important discoveries about wet environments on ancient Mars. Scientists now know that Mars was at one time like Earth, with an atmosphere thick enough to support liquid water which may have been favourable for microbial life.
Mr Callas said the Spirit rover also found evidence of ancient hydrothermal systems on Mars that could support an ecosystem. He said the Opportunity was still in good health despite some "arthritis" in its joints, adding: "We're on the surface of a planet that's hundreds of millions of kilometres away in frigid cold temperatures."

Cablevision subscribers can now watch cable TV on their iPhones or iPod touch devices, thanks to the cable-TV provider extending the functionality of its iPad app to all of Apple’s iOS devices. The new app allows Cablevision customers to access live-TV channels as well as thousands of VOD titles. It also acts as a remote control for Cablevision’s set-top boxes, allowing customers to change channels and other settings.
Cablevision first launched its iPad app in April. The new release extends its functionality to the iPhone and iPod touch, while also bringing remote control features to the iPad app. However, it doesn’t solve two key issues: Consumption of live and VOD TV is restricted to a subscriber’s home, making it impossible to view programming on the go. That may have been a minor issue for the iPad, since it could work well as a replacement for the bedroom or as a “TV” for kids. However, one has to wonder how many people will watch live television on the small iPhone screen while at home.
Another unresolved issue is that some cable programmers don’t like the idea of programming becoming available on mobile devices, in home or otherwise. Time Warner Cable, which has been offering similar functionality since March, initially got pressed by a number of channels to take its programming off its iPad app. It was eventually able to strike agreements with these programmers, but Cablevision wasn’t so lucky: MTV and Comedy Central owner Viacom sued the cable provider in June, arguing that it doesn’t have the necessary rights to bring its channels to the iPad.

Toshiba’s intuitive Face Tracking technology then taps into the laptop’s built-in webcam to further perfect the projection of the image by reacting to the motion and position of the viewer, delivering a broad viewing zone from which to view 3D content. The end result for consumers is the ability to view and enjoy real 3D – no glasses needed.
2D or 3D? The Choice Is Yours
The Qosmio F755 3D laptop offers up two displays in one, giving users the freedom to view content in either 2D or 3D – or both at the same time. Researchers have created a new e-paper can be printed and erased over and over again, and they hope it can be a reusable solution for the posters and signs printed by the millions for bus stop ads and store front displays.
Reuters reports that the new e-paper, by researchers at the Industrial Technology Research Institute, can be printed with a thermal printer like that used for fax machines. And when it's ready to be erased, one only needs to flip a switch and it's ready to be printed again -- up to 260 times.
The e-paper can produce different colors for more dynamic posters, and doesn't require a backlight. It is different from e-paper devices because it is essentially just the display, disconnected from any device that might update the display. The e-paper is printed with one image, and that's it until it is erased and reprinted. In the past, we've seen researchers excited about replacing paper signs or billboards with e-ink displays that can be updated on a whim, but this e-paper is a closer equivalent to the single-use printed posters we're used to, only they can be reprinted.
The researchers think it is a perfect solution for printing fewer posters and signs; however, it looks like it has a long way to go before it could really be considered a replacement for more colorful paper posters.
The posters still don't have the bright, crisp look that storefronts and advertisers would want. Yet, that could improve with time and already, an A4 sized piece of the e-paper will only cost about $2 -- and when it can be printed up to 260 times, that's quite cheap.
The only question is does a piece of e-paper used 260 times have a smaller footprint and environmental impact that 260 of the same sized printed paper posters? It would be interesting to see the life cycle analysis of the product.
Researchers hope to have the product available for the market within two years. But again, an LCA would be something we'd like to see before considering this a smart replacement for paper.
