USSR's Moon Lander: A New Look At A Space Race Oddity

ussrlem.jpg
You can see the hammer and sickle, and the "C" in "CCCP."

What is this thing? It's the USSR's version of the lunar module that -- as far as know -- never made it to the moon.

It's not on public display, but a student got a tour of the storage facility in Russia and posted pictures to his livejournal page, the website ZMEScience reports.
It's not like no one knew what the LK Lander looked like, but the historic curiosity has been out of public sight for a while.

The somewhat translated explanation from the livejournal page:Very original shot was due to secrecy. "Much to show you I just can not, although that may be confidential in the engines, R-7, I do not understand, because in the internet and so this in bulk, but here at the Department of the R-7 - a secret unit. Okay, we are accustomed to all sorts of wonders and absurdities."

It's "an engineering relic," ZMEScience says.

No-One Will Dare Steal Your Personalized Bike (Unless Their Name's "Andrea" Too)

Even the most successful bike-thief will hesitate for a moment before slicing through the D-lock on your prized personalized ride...which is why you should make it even more difficult for them by riding a two-man first and lastname bike:

No-One Will Dare Steal Your Personalized Bike (Unless Their Name's "Andrea" Too)

Sure, there may be a few integral components missing from this concept (gears, chains, pedals...) but designer Juri Zaech is trying to figure out a way to actually make a prototype of one of the bikes.

Any ideas? [Behance via TrendsNow]

Former U.S. Surgeon General Calls for Marijuana Legalization

By the CNN Wire Staff
Ex-surgeon general: Legalize marijuana

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
* Joycelyn Elders tells CNN resources can be better spent
* She says the drug's illegality is criminalizing young people
* "It's not a toxic substance," she says
* California's Proposition 19 would legalize marijuana use in the state

(CNN) -- Former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders told CNN Sunday she supports legalizing marijuana.

The trend-setting state of California is voting next month on a ballot initiative to legalize pot, also known as Proposition 19. The measure would legalize recreational use in the state, though federal officials have said they would continue to enforce drug laws in California if the initiative is approved.

"What I think is horrible about all of this, is that we criminalize young people. And we use so many of our excellent resources ... for things that aren't really causing any problems," said Elders. "It's not a toxic substance."

Supporters of California's Prop. 19 say it would raise revenue and cut the cost of enforcement, while opponents point to drug's harmful side-effects.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a letter, obtained by CNN Friday, that federal agents would continue to enforce federal marijuana laws and warned Prop. 19, if passed, would be a major stumbling block to federal partnerships between state and local authorities around drug enforcement.

His letter was a response to an August letter from several former directors of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration urging the White House to block Prop. 19 if it's approved next month.

Elders stressed the drug is not physically addictive and pointed to the damaging impact of alcohol, which is legal.

"We have the highest number of people in the world being criminalized, many for non-violent crimes related to marijuana," said Elders. "We can use our resources so much better."

World's Largest Single-Family Monster Home Built in India

Rising like an monument to immoderation, the world's biggest monster home has finally been completed in Mumbai, India. Built by the world's fourth richest man, Mukesh Ambani to the tune of $1 billion, the gargantuan 27-storey high-rise will be inhabited only by Ambani and his family -- in addition to a corporate facility. Nicknamed "Antilia" after a mythical island, TreeHugger Lloyd also called it one of the dumbest so-called 'green' buildings ever. No wonder too -- despite this behemoth boasting vertical gardens, according to Time the rest of the building is positively excessive:

The lavish building... is 173 meters high and has 37,000 square meters of floor space -- more than the Palace of Versailles. It contains a health club with a gym and dance studio, at least one swimming pool, a ballroom, guestrooms, a variety of lounges and a 50-seater cinema. There are three helicopter pads on the roof and a car park for 160 vehicles on the ground floors. It's obviously quite a job keeping all this running smoothly, so the house, if you can call it that, also boasts a staff of 600. And all this for just Ambani, his wife and their three children to enjoy.

Father And Son Send iPhone Into Space And Record Incredible Video

The Huffington Post   |  Hunter Stuart
A father and son from Brooklyn, New York sent an iPhone into the stratosphere a few weeks ago to record a video of the earth's curvature.

The two spent eight months researching and testing their homemade craft, which was made of a weather balloon and a styrofoam case for the iPhone, before launching in Newburgh, NY.
The phone apparently braved winds of 100 miles-per-hour and temperatures as cold as 60 below zero (the iPhone was smartly packed with hand warmers).

The recorded video shows the phone reaching a height of 100,000 feet before the balloon burst, plummeting the contraption back to earth, where it landed 30 miles from the launch point, in a tree, where the father and son found it in the dark because of the iPhone's LED light.

Princess Leia Getting High While Battling the Empire?

During filming of The Empire Strikes Back, the second movie in the epic "Star Wars" saga, it turns out the subzero planet Hoth didn't have the only snow on the set.

Actress Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the first trilogy admitted to the Australian Associated Press that she used cocaine while the movie was being shot. "We did cocaine on the set of 'Empire', in the ice planet," she told the Aussie newswire on a visit to Sydney for her stand-up comedy show Wishful Drinking. "I didn't even like coke that much, it was just a case of getting on whatever train I needed to take to get high." (See a video on doing yoga, Star Wars style.)

Fisher, 53, now known in the movie biz primarily as a writer and comedienne, said her life had spiraled into a tempest of addiction and rehab, and even sent her to the emergency room from an overdose. John Belushi, her co-star in The Blues Brothers, which was released in 1980, the same year as Empire, warned her of her problem. Ironically, Belushi himself succumbed to a drug overdose in 1982.

"Slowly I realised I was doing a bit more drugs than other people and losing my choice in the matter," she said. "If I'd been addicted to booze I'd be dead now, because you just go out and get it." (See the Top 10 "Star Wars" fan films.)

10th Grader Aaron Gordon’s In-Game 360 Off the Backboard

From: http://thehoopdoctors.com/

If you think it’s a typo, you are mistaken. Rising Class of 2013 power/small forward Aaron Gordon is one of the most athletic players in the sophomore class. If you recognize the last name, Aaron is the younger brother of former UCLA stand-out Drew Gordon, who recently transfered to the University of New Mexico.

The younger Gordon is the #23 rated prospect in the entire ‘13 Class, but has the skills to be a Top 10 talent by his senior season. At 6‘7 and 215 lbs, Aaron uses his already large frame to overpower smaller defenders, but also has above average hands and passing skills to either drop a dime or drive right by larger opponents.

Surely Gordon is not finished growing as he should add a few inches and gain a few more pounds to become a top tier big man come 2013. Even at the ripe age of 15, Aaron is receiving lots of high major interest from all the big time programs out West like Cal, Arizona, Stanford, Washington, and of course SEC powerhouse Kentucky.

We here at TheHoopDoctors.com will be keeping our eye on Aaron.

Check out Aaron first pulling off a sweet windmill before finishing off an amazing 360 jam off an alley-oop pass off the backboard:
