Handmade Dutch Bike Is All-Wooden -- Down To The Spokes

There's a lot of wooden bikes out there, ranging from the glue-it-yourself, no-metal kind, to award-winning, high-end designer bikes. But this near all-wooden bike, handmade by Dutch industrial designer Jan Gunneweg, must be one of the most beautiful wooden specimens we've seen to date.

Made out of solid walnut and weighing under 35 pounds, the bike's unique cachet is all in the wheels, which each sport a thick wooden spoke. Drawing attention away from the metal support spokes, the wooden spokes create the impression that there is a continuous line from front wheel, through the frame and all the way to the rear wheel.

As Gunneweg tells Co.Design, the spokes "symbolize the legs of man," adding that "balancing the wheels was pretty challenging because of the width of the wooden spoke."
Another nice detail are the groovy wooden rims on both wheels:

Though it may seem paradoxical, wood and bamboo may actually be more sustainable as materials for bike design, due to the energy-intensity of steel and aluminium. Plus, the nature of wood and bamboo lends more easily to the do-it-yourself ethic, which may explain the recent explosion of handmade bamboo bicycles in places like Brooklyn, and even far off locales like Ghana, Africa.

Gunneweg, whose obsession is wood, has previously designed two wooden bikes before this version, and says that this latest model delivers a smoother ride. The bike will be available for sale later this month; for more details, visit his website.

The Dutch Way: Bicycles and Fresh Bread

AS an American who has been living here for several years, I am struck, every time I go home, by the way American cities remain manacled to the car. While Europe is dealing with congestion and greenhouse gas buildup by turning urban centers into pedestrian zones and finding innovative ways to combine driving with public transportation, many American cities are carving out more parking spaces. It’s all the more bewildering because America’s collapsing infrastructure would seem to cry out for new solutions.

Geography partly explains the difference: America is spread out, while European cities predate the car. But Boston and Philadelphia have old centers too, while the peripheral sprawl in London and Barcelona mirrors that of American cities.

More important, I think, is mind-set. Take bicycles. The advent of bike lanes in some American cities may seem like a big step, but merely marking a strip of the road for recreational cycling spectacularly misses the point. In Amsterdam, nearly everyone cycles, and cars, bikes and trams coexist in a complex flow, with dedicated bicycle lanes, traffic lights and parking garages. But this is thanks to a different way of thinking about transportation.

To give a small but telling example, pointed out to me by my friend Ruth Oldenziel, an expert on the history of technology at Eindhoven University, Dutch drivers are taught that when you are about to get out of the car, you reach for the door handle with your right hand — bringing your arm across your body to the door. This forces a driver to swivel shoulders and head, so that before opening the door you can see if there is a bike coming from behind. Likewise, every Dutch child has to pass a bicycle safety exam at school. The coexistence of different modes of travel is hard-wired into the culture.

This in turn relates to lots of other things — such as bread. How? Cyclists can’t carry six bags of groceries; bulk buying is almost nonexistent. Instead of shopping for a week, people stop at the market daily. So the need for processed loaves that will last for days is gone. A result: good bread.

There are also in the United States certain perceptions associated with both cycling and public transportation that are not the case here. In Holland, public buses aren’t considered last-resort forms of transportation. And cycling isn’t seen as eco-friendly exercise; it’s a way to get around. C.E.O.’s cycle to work, and kids cycle to school.

It’s true that public policy reinforces the egalitarianism. With mandatory lessons and other fees, getting a driver’s license costs more than $1,000. And taxi fares are kept deliberately high: a trip from the airport may cost $80, while a 20-minute bus ride sets you back about $3.50. But the egalitarianism — or maybe better said a preference for simplicity — is also rooted in the culture. A 17th-century French naval commander was shocked to see a Dutch captain sweeping out his own quarters. Likewise, I used to run into the mayor of Amsterdam at the supermarket, and he wasn’t engaged in a populist stunt (mayors aren’t elected here but are government appointees); he was shopping.

For American cities to think outside the car would seem to require a mental sea change. Then again, Americans, too, are practical, no-nonsense people. And Zef Hemel, the chief planner for the city of Amsterdam, reminded me that sea changes do happen. “Back in the 1960s, we were doing the same thing as America, making cities car-friendly,” he said. Funnily enough, it was an American, Jane Jacobs, who changed the minds of European urban designers. Her book “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” got European planners to shift their focus from car-friendliness to overall livability.

When I noted that Manhattan’s bike lanes seem to be used more for recreation than transport — cyclists in Amsterdam are dressed in everything from jeans to cocktail dresses, while those in Manhattan often look like spandex cyborgs — Mr. Hemel told me to give it time. “Those are the pioneers," he said. “You have to start somewhere.”

What he meant was, “You start with bike lanes” — that is, with the conviction that urban planning can bring about beneficial cultural changes. But that points up another mental difference: the willingness of Europeans to follow top-down social planning. America’s famed individualism breeds an often healthy distrust of the elite. I’m as quick as any other red-blooded American to bristle at European technocrats telling me how to live. (Try buying a light bulb or a magazine after 6 p.m. in Amsterdam, where the political elite have decreed that workers’ well-being requires that shops be open only during standard office hours, precisely when most people can’t shop.)

But while many Americans see their cars as an extension of their individual freedom, to some of us owning a car is a burden, and in a city a double burden. I find the recrafting of the city in order to lessen — or eliminate — the need for cars to be not just grudgingly acceptable, but, yes, an expansion of my individual freedom. So I say (in this case, at least): Go, social-planning technocrats! If only America’s cities could be so free.

Hubway - Bike Sharing Comes to Boston on July 28!


Hubway, Boston's new bike sharing public transportation program targeted to launch at 11am on July 28 at City Hall Plaza, lets members ride free for the first 30 minutes.  Sign up to be a member for a day, 3 days, or a year, swipe your card to get a bike, and go!

Hubway will provide 610 silver bicycles at 61 bike sharing stations scattered around the city.  This initiall rollout will put bikes in areas with the most tourists, workers, and residents, including Downtown Boston, Back Bay, Fenway, the South End, South Boston Waterfront, and other neighborhoods.

Each 41-foot station will have a bicycle rack with slots for 15 bikes, and a solar-powered kiosk where you'll swipe your card - similar to Zipcar.  You can pick up a bike at one station and return it to another.
The number of bikes at each station will depend on the location's expected popularity, with South Station getting the most - 47 bikes.  Many stations are located about 200-400 yards from each other, as other cities with bike sharing programs find this distance ideal for encouraging usage.

The bike share system's rental rates encourage short-term cycle usage.  You can ride free for the first half hour and cheaply for another hour or so - but after that, rates climb steeply, topping out at $100/day.

Boston visitors and other infrequent users can choose 24-hour or 3-day "Casual" rates.  For residents who plan to use the bikes on an on-going basis, the "Registered" annual membership is a bargain at $85, especially since you also get a 25% discount on rental fees - a sweet deal.

Through the end of July, save even more when you sign up for an annual membership for only $60.

Even though Hubway targets short-term bicycle usage to fill gaps in the Boston MBTA public transportation system, tourists and other city visitors can use these bikes to travel from attraction to attraction faster than on foot or by T - for example, from Fenway Park to the Museum of Fine Arts. 

Boston's Hubway bike share program will operate for 3 seasons, and the bikes and kiosks will be removed and stored during winter months. 

Bike share systems have been wildly successful in other cities such as Washington DC, Montreal, and Paris - so now Boston gets its turn, with Cambridge, Somerville, and Brookline to follow in Phase 2 starting in 2012.  Ultimately, look for as many as 5,000 bikes and 300 stations throughout the Boston area.

Hubway is part of Mayor Tom Menino's Boston Bikes Program, designed to move the city from being arguably the worst cycling city in the country to one of the best in the world.

First year goals for Hubway are 4,000 members and 100,000 rides - probably far too modest, considering that Washington DC achieved Year 1 results of 11,000 members and 300,000 rides.  Surely Boston can beat DC!

Hiplok: A Wearable Bike Lock That's Not Just For Tattooed Hipsters

The weight of a bike lock is inversely proportional to the weight of your bike, and directly proportional to the cost. They are also a pain to store on the bike, and I often sling my heavy duty cable lock across my shoulders; No doubt it will garrote me in an accident some day. But now Industrial designers John Abrahams and Benjamin Smith have solved the problem with the very ingenious Hiplok.
 
 
The designers call it " the world's first bicycle lock developed specifically to be worn on the body." It is adjustable and easily put on or removed, much like an airline seat belt mechanism. The weight of the lock is on your hips, so it is much more stable. The graphic is highly reflective. it is also safer than throwing it over your shoulder:
If you've ever worn a chain lock or flexible lock on your body, you'll know that you have to lock it in place in order for it to stay in position. This is not very safe if you, or somebody helping you, needs to take off the lock in an emergency situation. Due to it's unique design, Hiplok is never locked into a loop while it is attached to your body, and it remains fully adjustable and quickly removable at all times when being worn.

No doubt a lot of readers are wondering why anyone would wear their lock instead of just putting it on the bike. There are a couple of reasons; when you are starting and stopping a lot, it is faster that wrapping the chain around the seatpost. It doesn't scratch the bike. If you have to carry the bike at all (going multi-modal or climbing stairs) it makes the bike a lot easier to carry. (chains can weigh a couple of pounds).

This Prototype Hoverbike Could Land In A Year!

It was bound to happen sooner or later and we’re so happy it finally has. An Australian man by the name of Chris Malloy has built a functioning prototype of what can only be called a Hoverbike. It may not be the Speeder or Swoop bike Star Wars had us fantasizing about all these years, but there’s no denying the cool factor.

According to a recent article over at Gizmag, the Hoverbike sports an 1170cc 4-stroke engine. Its 10-feet long, weighs 231 lbs and will supposedly travel 92 miles on a single tank of gas. The frame is made of kevlar-reinforced carbon fiber and while it hasn’t taken to the sky yet, its creator plans on running the first true test flight in a couple of months. Just like a certain "jetpack" we’ve seen recently, lift comes from two ducted fans. The rotor blades spin in opposite directions, eliminating the need for a tail-rotor while providing some slick visual appeal.

Malloy still has a lot of work ahead of him and he is currently looking for investors to help get his Hoverbike off the ground. He wants it to go into limited production within a year and full scale production about 2 years after that. If all goes well, the first batch could cost about $40,000. However, Malloy claims full-scale production could lower the cost into the high-end sport bike range.

Another interesting thing the Hoverbike has going for it is the ultralight rating. With that, anyone (at least in the U.S.) interested in picking up one of these futuristic toys wouldn’t be required to have a full-fledged pilot’s license -- making it much more accessible.

Dutch To Build Solar Panels Into Their Roads, Starting With Bike Lanes

The Dutch are well known for their ubiquitous bike lanes, to the point where Amsterdam is neck and neck with Copenhagen for the title of most bike-loving capital in Europe. Now, Denmark will have to come up with something big to match the latest plan from the Netherlands - the installation of solar panels in roads, starting with bike lanes.

Talk about the efficient use of space: if you're going to have roads (and hopefully you'll have bike lanes), why not put that space to work producing energy? Called the Solaroad, the project is the brainchild of Dutch research firm TNO. The idea is pretty straightforward: a layer of concrete forms the road itself. A centimeter thick layer of crystalline silicon solar cells is laid on top, and covered by a layer of toughened glass. The energy potential: 50kWh per square meter per year, which can then be used to power street lighting, traffic systems and households.

But it's still an idea in development, which is why TNO, working with the Province of North Holland, the consulting firm Ooms Averhorn Group and the tech firm Intech, is starting with a small-scale pilot program in the town of Krommenie, outside of Amsterdam. Scheduled for installation next year, the first Solaroad will hopefully allow its developers better implement many more throughout the country.

Maybe it'll even make it to the US one day- though in today's political climate, this probably costly project is unlikely to get much support in Congress. Well, we can dream.

Bike Hanger: Vertically Rotating, Multi-Level Bike Parking By Manifesto Architecture

It's a scenario familiar in many cities: ugly, unwieldy and badly-designed bike racks, with the worst of it being that there's never enough bike parking to go around (meaning messy clumps of bikes in public spaces, for example). And with space in urban areas usually at a premium, it makes sense to stack things vertically. The intriguing Bike Hanger from New York-based Manifesto Architecture does the vertical trick, but takes things a step further by hanging off the side of buildings in those underused, residual spaces between them.

According to ArchDaily, Bike Hanger was designed and shortlisted for the 2010 Seoul Cycle Design Competition, which called for ideas to improve the city's bike-friendliness and infrastructure.

The idea is to keep pedestrian flow of traffic free from bike interference, and public spaces free of unsightly globs of locked bikes that look like cycling disasters. Each rack unit can hold anywhere from 20 to 36 bicycles, and the units themselves can be agglomerated, creating rows of neatly stacked public bike racks.

The canopy and frame would use recycled plastic, stainless steel and carbon frame. The hanger's rotation mechanism would be powered by good old-fashioned elbow grease, by pedalling a stationary bike hooked up into the hanger system, thus keeping energy and maintenance costs low.

On top of that, Bike Hangers could be designed as urban landmarks in their own right, creating another means of wayfinding for city dwellers.

One question that comes to mind is how a system like this could be protected from vandalism and theft -- after all, we've seen how public bike programs like Paris' Velib have been dealt a blow by irresponsible use. And what about long-term parking? But overall, the Bike Hanger's space-saving virtues, sensible structural format which allows for easy visual identification of each person's bike and its use of recycled materials makes it a pretty clever proposal for solving the bike parking dilemma.

While biking is becoming more popular in U.S. cities — L.A. is adding 1,600 bike lanes, Chicago has a new bike plan, and Portland has 17,000 daily commuters — Europe has some amazing biking cities of their own.
The Ecologist has come up with the 10 best biking cities in Europe (in no particular order):

-Lyon, France
  • “With its charming twisty lanes and dedicated bike routes, Lyon is a cyclists’ paradise.”
  • The city’s bike sharing program, Velo’v has over 300 stations throughout the city.
-Rome, Italy

Clever Bike Lock Can Climb a Light Pole (Video)

When it comes to thwarting bike thieves, even the best bike-locks can't guarantee your cycle won't get jacked. But here's a simple idea -- instead of chaining up your ride to an object at ground level, imagine if you had a lock that could hoist it high overhead, safely out of reach from would-be robbers. Well, that's exactly what gave one group of German designers the bright idea to create a bike lock that can climb a light pole.





In this video from the German company Conrad, a group of designers fashion a bike lock that can scale light-poles. The invention looks fairly simply: some inline-skate wheels, fixed onto a metal ring with a small motor. In a matter of seconds, the clever contraption transforms your bike from a tempting target for bike thieves into a logistical challenge few crooks would have the courage to undertake -- unless, of course, they moonlight as coconut collectors.

Inventiveness aside, the pole-climbing bike lock probably won't put an end to cycle thievery as we know it -- but it does make for a cool concept. For starters, the prototype in the video doesn't appear to be able to adapt to poles of varying circumference, meaning it might just work on those types of streetlights. Secondly, each pole could really only hold one bike at a time, lest a 'double-parking' type of situation were to arise. And finally, unless the contraption really cinches-down in place, a rope might just be enough to award a determined thief both bike and high-tech climbing lock with little trouble.

The idea is reminiscent of another bike-storage concept covered here a while back -- the bike tree. Instead of holding just one bike reasonably, this design allows for the safe keeping of four cycles at a time while providing more security with a coded access system.

Whether or not we see such climbing bike-locks on the market anytime soon, with so many inventive minds coming up with ways to make cycling a more practical alternative for getting around, things are looking up -- even if there's no bike up there to block the view yet.

Recycling old bicycles usually means fixing together old parts to form “new” bicycles that look even older than the originals. However, a few creative bicycle artists prove that the bicycle lends itself to being repurposed into sleek and stylish furniture that can or can’t be in your face about its humble beginnings. In either case, bicycle parts have never been so in vogue!

We’re talking about ElasticShelf, made by System Design Studio in Barcelona, Spain. This shelf unit can be used in the home or the office and is made out of recycled bicycle tires that are suspended between two used furniture legs — a simple idea that’ll keep you pumped for some time.

This side table, called “Vector,” lets you forget that you’re looking at old bicycle parts, so sleek is its design. It was created by bike furniture designer Andy Gregg, who is currently the only designer in the world to work exclusively in recycled bicycle parts, and is made from professional-level bicycle rim sections. It comes with either a clear or smoked glass top, but we’d go clear so that visitors can admire the construction from all angles!

The “Modulus” side table, above, does not hide its origins, instead cleverly integrating bicycle spokes into its design. It is made from bent and welded chrome-plated bicycle rims, and the top comes in either glass or acrylic.

A coat rack is not what comes to mind when thinking about recycling old bicycle parts for furniture. Luckily, Gregg thinks outside the box. His coat rack uses bicycle frame tubes and wheel rim sections. It certainly looks sturdier than many coat hangers we have seen!

It is as barstools that the shiny, metallic spokes of bicycles seem to be utilized best. They’ll lend a cool yet nostalgic feel to even the most sterile of bars. Speaking of love: what couple could say no to this cozy loveseat, perfect for romantic evenings, maybe reminiscing about bicycle tours once taken together? Oh, and the Modulus Loveseat is also available with custom-made cushions in a variety of fabrics and materials.
2) Benches

From loveseat to bench is just a small step and a few necessary modifications. We just love the model in blue, above! Or how about the custom-made one below? It was commissioned by the North Star Academy High School in Marquette, MI, where it has invited students to rest since 2005.

Below is another bench, on location in a shop. It was originally designed to be just the right height for putting your shoes on and taking them off after a ride.

1) Chairs

Given the size of bicycles, and their tires especially, they really lend themselves to being converted into chairs. We were able to find not just one but three talented designers making bicycle tire chairs.

The amazing lawn chairs, above, are made entirely out of old bicycle tires. Notice how the pattern of the tires seems to imitate that of wicker furniture. Very cool!
These particular chairs can be found at the gardens of Sampson & Beasley in Portland, OR. But there’s a story behind them that will take us to Indonesia — Bali, to be precise. There, local groups have taken up the issue of the millions of discarded tires that are often simply left lying around (or worse, are burned) because of a lack of infrastructure to get them to landfills — or better, to be recycled. You can imagine what kind of acrid, black smoke tires produce when burned…
Luckily, those initiatives employ locals and train them in making chairs out of recycled moped and bicycle tires. The finished chairs are then shipped all over the world, but with every purchase, money goes back to the families and thus the communities of those who made them.
Needless to say, the chairs are great for the outdoors — in the garden, on the deck or patio or next to the pool — because they are sturdy, long-lasting and heavier than plastic, which will come in handy when the next storm rolls around. If you are interested, you can order them here.

Lounge chairs

Being off your rocker — in this chair — might not be so bad. Though made out of recycled car tires and thus not really fitting on our list strictly speaking, it should theoretically be possible to create it out of old bicycle tires as well, given that the car tires are cut into smaller strips in any case.

“Tired Lounge” is the brainchild of designer Leo Kempf and originates from his experiment with rubber as a material for furniture. The result? A comfortable lounge chair that sits anyone from a baby to a tall adult; the designer is 6’2″ and sits in the chair comfortably. According to a description on his website, the “soft rubber was cleaned, coated, cut into strips, stretched and woven.” The simple curve shape is intended to give the chair an appearance of floating. Says Mr. Kempf: “The chair was a fun, experimental project that turned out quite nicely. Its bold shape with the tire texture make the chair really stand out.”

If you’re thinking, “Hey, where’s the bike?” in this photo, you have to think just a bit beyond the bicycle. The chair is made of old Chicago bike racks and is another ingenious creation by Gregg. There are many other great bicycle chair models in Gregg’s shop. We especially like “Milano,” shown top, because of its funky colors and the fact that it comes with a horn. You never know when that may come in handy… Meanwhile below is the “Vector” lounge chair.

If you’re working in a bicycle shop or have had enough of simply repairing old bikes, it’s time to either get creative or donate some raw materials. There will surely be bike lovers who don’t want to only sit on their bikes but also decorate their houses with them, especially after going through our list. There’s more out there, and we’re sure, more creative bike furniture and accessories to come in the future.

Designers Create a "More Efficient" Chainless Bike

The Bike, Unchained

A group of designers in Hungary have done away with what has long been a staple of bicycle design, those oily old chains, with their creation, the StringBike. Instead of being propelled forward the traditional way, this novel new bike utilizes a clever symmetrical rope and pulley system that may make cycling safer, smoother, and more efficient -- and it just may be the way everyone pedals around in the future.

While the StringBike's system of strings is a bit more complicated than the chain and gears you're used to, the way it operates is actually surprisingly simple.

PhysOrg explains how it works:


The rotation of the pedals forces arms at each side to swing forward and backward on its shaft. When moving forward, the arm pulls the driving wire that is wound around a drum on the rear wheel, forcing the wheel to rotate. The arms at each side alternate so that when one is moving forward the other is moving backward.

The new system has 19 "gear" positions and the transmission ratio can be changed at any time by turning a shifting knob on the right handle grip. This moves the pulley shafts up and down along a traction path on an eccentric disc, which has 19 notches to adjust the height of the pulleys and distance between the center of rotation and the shaft. The gears can be changed even if the bicycle is stationary, but gear change speed increases with the speed of the bicycle.

Doing away with those clunky old chains in exchange for the StringBike's polyethylene rope comes with plenty of advantages for the cycling enthusiast. Because the drive system is symmetrical, utilizing both legs separately, the StringBike is said to be more efficient and easier to handle on winding streets.

And there are several other advantages of the string system that bike commuters, in particularly, are sure to appreciate. The unique design allows for quick removal of the rear tire to make the bike easier to store or carry around. Also, the strings are dry -- meaning no more arriving to work with oil-stained pant legs.

Only time will tell if this wildly innovative new string-based system can catch on in the world of bicycle design, but still one thing is for certain -- imagination, and perhaps bikes too, are best left unchained.

That often means buying more than one lock and disassembling your bike every time you leave it unguarded. Kevin Scott hopes to change all of that. He just unveiled his revolutionary bendable bike. That’s right, with the push of a lever the cycle becomes bike-Houdini and can wrap around any post making it easy to secure all its parts with just one lock. No more clunky chains? Sign us up!

Scott is a 21 year old graduate of The De Montfort University in the UK and was runner-up in the Business Design Centre New Designer of the Year Award. The bicycle he created uses a ratchet mechanism to allow it to be both rigid and bendable — but not all at once. Once you hop off the bike, you simply push a lever on the frame and the bike becomes flexible, so you can wrap it around your nearest pole or bike rack.

Scott decided to create the bike specifically so that all of its pieces could be secured easily with one lock. Scott’s bike is a prototype at this point but he’s looking to parlay this technology into a business venture. “I am now going to take this forward to produce a fully resolved solution and hopefully this will be a stepping stone into a career in the bike designing industry,” he says. Anyone looking for a new bike-genius might want to give this chap a call.
