Angelenos aren't strangers to the works of British street artist Banksy. His participation in MOCA's street art show was a (predictably secret) given, and the man plastered L.A. during the run-up to the Oscars, inspiring residents of Westwood Village to petition for his works to remain. And don't get us started on the career of Mr. Brainwash, Bansky's special present to our fair city. LA Weekly photographer Colin Young-Wolff just got back from a tour of Europe, and he sent over a photo from Occupy London that is reputed to be a Banksy sculpture and has since been tagged over.
A blogger at ArtLyst explains: "The downside of leaving this amazing work of art in the middle of the grounds of St Paul's unprotected is that other protesters have drawn graffiti all over the sculpture to highlight their own particular brand of causes. Banksy has never been concerned with creating lasting or permanent works of art."
True that. The piece was made to be vandalized. But at least Colin got a great pic before it happened.
When you carve your Jack-o'-lantern this Halloween, try and keep it simple. Because no matter how good you are at carving, shaving and hollowing, you won't be able to match this epically designed pumpkin carving. Demons, ghouls, zombies, guts—all artistically sculpted from this 1,818.5 pound pumpkin.
Yes. one thousand eight hundred eighteen and a half pounds of orangey orange goo, seeds and slime. That makes the pumpkin the world's largest pumpkin and the carving the world's largest pumpkin carving. The giganto pumpkin carving was made by Ray Villafane and the detail is delicious. It's also shit your pants scary too—the walking dead look like they're climbing out of hell. Villafane is carving more pumpkins like this at the New York Botanical Garden and they'll all be on showcase through Halloween. See more of the pictures at Inhabitat. [INHABITAT]
Milagro celebrates the origins of tequila (the noble agave plant) in their premium hand blown bottles. These bottles house the brand's trio of Barrel Reserve offerings.
Remy Martin Cognac Louis XIII
Old world French luxury is the spirit of this bottle from Remy Martin. This cognac hits at around $500, so logically the bottle are appropriately opulent.
Medea Vodka
What's wild about this bottle? How about the fact that you can broadcast your favorite phrase (or ladies birthday, or whatever) via the LED screen? Medea claims it is the first interactive bottle. We can't think of any others.
Crystal Head Vodka
Crystal Head Voda is crazy for two reasons. 1. The skull bottle. 2. It is owned by Dan Aykroyd.
Jazz Vodka
Nothing wrong with literal design. Jazz Vodka, which comes from Poland, employs a trumpet shaped bottle. Fittingly, the brand debuted at the 1991 International Jazz Fest. Smooth.
Armenian Brandy
This brand has served up some really insane bottles over the years — dragons, bulls, ships, etc. The sword is the craziest. Brandish this at a party and be guarenteed some degree of drunken knighthood.
Tommy Guns
Again, literal design never hurt anyone. Tommy Guns works with a 1920s era gangsta feel (think Al Capone) and pushes that with its eyecatching bottle.
Hijos De Villa Pistol Reposado Tequila
Wild inappropriate or awesome? The brand claims this limited bottle represents the courage of the revolutionary era (and it was released on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution).
Kalashnikov Vodka
Two legendary Russian inventions combined in a single product. Bang!
Brew Dog The End of History
Scotland's Brew Dog takes no shorts when crafting inventive drinks. Their "The End of History" was a limited edition 55% abv (CRAZE!) brew presented in bottles housed in road kill. The bottles were limited to just 11.
He's a modern day master making incredible 3D images that pop off the page - armed only with a pencil and a piece of paper.
At just 20-years-old, Chilean artist Fredo is quickly captivating the online art world with his series of graphite sketches.
He is now planning to take his art to the streets in a bid to spread his fanbase from the virtual world to the real one.
Scroll down for video...
How it all began: Fredo's first picture of a butterfly, which led him to develop his technique
Busting through: An elephant seemingly charges its way through the paper
Fredo, whose real name is Wladimir Inostroza, learnt his startling technique purely by accident.
Drawing a butterfly whilst laid out on his bed, he realised the picture had been stretched out across the page.
On closer inspection he saw how the animal appeared to be floating, and that by chance he had used a method similar to one used by English 3D artist Julian Beever.
Scary: Spread across two pages, this series looks like a man is jumping off the paper
Out of the box: This picture looks like a puppet is being pulled out of the box
Down time: This man is waiting with an empty glass of wine
After adding in the shade with a set of charcoals, he took a photograph - and has never looked back.
With his own blog, thousands of fans on his Facebook page, and countless pages dedicated to his work, Fredo is now keen to expand on his talents and take his art to the streets of Santiago and beyond.
Picture frame: The photograph is handing Fredo a pencil in this image
Helping hand: Bionic and human joints combine in this picture
Pathway: This sketch looks like an intricate wood carving
Hard at work: A make believe image of Fredo pondering on his next project
Police were called to New York's Times Square yesterday after an art exhibit turned a model into an exhibitionist.
Handcuffs were the only thing Zoe West, of Kingston, New York, was wearing when she was taken into custody on Tuesday evening.
The 21-year-old beauty was splashed with paint for famed local bodypainter Andy Golub in a stunt that drew onlookers ranging from tourists to office workers.
Crowd-pleaser: Tourists and workers alike gathered to watch Andy Golub paint model Zoe West in New York's Times Square
But not everyone enjoyed the spectacle.
At about 5 p.m., several NYPD officers showed up and took the woman into custody, binding her with handcuffs and hauling her off in a police van.
Miss West said there was nothing against the law about her modelling.
She told the New York Post: 'I don't believe there is truly anything wrong with what I did and with what he was doing.'
Colour me bad: Zoe West is led into a police van after her arrest while serving as the canvas for bodypainter Andy Golub
Miss West, whose ModelMayhem.com profile promises she would do 'NO EROTIC NUDE WORK EVER,' said the charges were later dropped.
Mr Golub is no stranger to gawkers in Times Square either, as he’s been there to perform his art several times over the last few years.
He was charged with public lewdness in a similar stunt last month with two other models.
The 45-year-old told the Post that Miss West was aware of the risks and posed for him anyway.
He said: 'I explained all this to my model, so she was completely aware.'
Naked ambition: Zoe West said she was aware getting arrested may have been one of the risks when she was bodypainted in Times Square
Using just a toothpick to create her minuscule folds, German paper-crafter Anja Markiewicz makes what must be some of the smallest examples of origami around. Many of her tiniest paper cranes measure only 4mm across (check out those fingerprints for a sense of scale). Oh, and the 19-year-old Gomez and 17-year-old Bieber are also pretty much nude in this depiction, their privates covered only by a maple leaf (because Biebs is from Canada) and a Lone Star (because ... well, duh).
(Update at 2:59 p.m. on 8/10/11: Read out interview about the statue with sculptor Daniel Edwards here.)
At this point, the above image is the only available view we have of the statue, which is called "Justin and Selena as One." But that's going to change in the near future: Martin Puentes, manager of two New Fine Arts locations in the Dallas area confirms to DC9 today that the statue is headed the way of the area adult store chain's West Northwest Highway location. Far as we can tell, it's the first planned display of the piece.
(Update at 4:14 p.m. on 8/9/11: We've not got some more images of the statue. Check them out after the jump -- and in .GIF form, no less!)
"[Edwards] contacted us about it," Puentes says. "We kept making sure he knew what we were -- that we're not an art gallery. But he said he wanted to put it in an adult store."
So there you go. Puentes isn't sure exactly when it's coming -- Edwards has yet to give him an arrival date -- but he's certain that the Edwards piece is indeed on its way. And he's looking forward to its arrival, too.
"His art looks pretty cool," Puentes says. "I mean, it's pretty out there. But I like it!"

All you art collectors out there. Here is a chance to get a Giclee copy of some of Ian M Sherwin work. Ian is planning on doing a whole series of Marblehead, Massachusetts paintings. His work is amazing.
