New Mario Kart 7 screenshots – Tanooki power-up

From: http://nintendoeverything.com/

A good amount of these screenshots show the Tanooki , a new power-up for the Mario Kart series.
Here’s how Nintendo describes it:

“Fans of the Tanooki power-up will be glad to hear that the Super Leaf makes an appearance in this latest instalment giving you both offensive and defensive abilities. Use your Tanooki tail to both protect you from incoming shells and to whip opponents off the track.”

The Coolest New Features Of GoldenEye 007: Reloaded

We loved the Wii reinvision of GoldenEye, but Eurocom wasn't finished. The new features of GoldenEye 007: Reloaded in hands-on preview proved to us that the game still has some new tricks up its sleeve.

From: http://www.ugo.com/games/goldeneye-007-reloaded-features

GoldenEye 007 was positively received. Unfortunately, many of the praises were accompanied by the phrase that haunts the Nintendo Wii and its titles. That phrase was, of course, "for a Wii game." The game was fun, action-packed, smooth and memorable... for a Wii game. Eurocom knew there was still more to be done with theGoldenEye name, and we experienced all of the upcoming fun with the new features of GoldenEye 007: Reloaded in our hands-on preview.

60 frames per second, upgraded graphics, new game modes and improved online features are just some of the changes Bond fans can expect. Although Eurocom was staying tight-lipped about the online features, they acknowledged the Wii's online accessibility issues. And, let's face it, this is Activision.

Everything In The Wii Version Plus More

The first coolest new feature of GoldnEye 007: Reloaded is everything that made the Wii version a great game hasn't been lost in translation. The music, the level design and even having Daniel Craig's stunt double, David Cooke, do the motion capturing have all been included in the transition over to Xbox 360 and PS3. The high-octane set pieces Activision has seemed to become synonymous with look better than ever in Reloaded.

But GoldenEye 007: Reloaded isn't just the Wii game with better graphics. They have taken the Wii game's features, in their entirety, and paired them with the new features of Reloaded to make the complete GoldenEye experience.

The Graphics

The coolest new feature of GoldenEye 007: Reloaded that every gamer will immediately notice is the graphics. With the graphics comes Eurocom's focus to deliver a game that runs at 60 frames per second. This was immediately noticed in our hands-on preview as we ran through the "Severnaya" level. As we stealthily roamed around the winter wonderland, we performed context sensitive takedowns, silent kills and witnessed intense set pieces smoothly and fluidly.

When the satellite dish we were looking to infiltrate was hit with the GoldenEye weapon, a massive EMP surge was let out which caused a jet to whiz by our heads and crash at our feet. Just when we thought the set piece was over, our Bond looked up one last time to see a helicopter, also struck by the EMP wave, about to slam into us. An amazing set piece brought to life with the new graphics.

MI6 Ops

One of the coolest new feature of GoldenEye 007: Reloaded we were most excited about was the MI6 Ops mode. Much like Modern Warfare 2's Spec Ops, the MI6 Ops are missions separate from the single player campaign and multiplayer that add refreshing replayability to the game. The MI6 Ops come in four different flavors: Wave Defense, Assault, Stealth and Elimination.

We got to see one of the Wave Defense type missions in action, which was a Gears of WarHorde mode type of defense game, pitting wave after wave of enemies at the player. The twist was that the player needed to defend a computer terminal to finish an upload. The waves increased in difficulty until it was too much to handle.

These modes also feature an options list much like the original GoldenEye's countless cheats. Paintball mode, increased enemy AI and other options were all available to turn on to add to the player's score. These scores were then posted on a leaderboard where friends can see how well they each did on each mission.

The MI6 Ops were only single player, however, which seems like a missed opportunity for some great co-op play.

Multiplayer

The nostalgia of the N64's GoldenEye runs deep, from the music to the levels to the guns. What every player remembers the most though, were those multiplayer deathmatches on the couch. The couch, unfortunately, isn't where most of our multiplayer gaming is done anymore. That is to say we're still sitting on the couch, but our teammates and enemies could be halfway across the world now. Even though the Wii offered online multiplayer, it wasn't what we've become accustomed to for multiplayer games in this generation. We want voice chat, we want large firefights and we want to party up with our friends!

The coolest new feature of GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is of course the multiplayer. Although not much has been confirmed yet, what we do know is a step in the right direction. 16-player online, voice chat, new weapons and new maps have all been confirmed. As we await further details we can only become more and more excited.

PS3 Move and Sharpshooter Compatible

Part of the hands-on preview we were able to participate in was conducted with the PS3 Sharpshooter Move peripheral. This is definitely one of the coolest features of Goldeneye 007: Reloaded for anyone who loves using the Sharpshooter for PS3 FPSs. It's nice to see that the Wii's praised Goldeneye 007 motion controls are being brought over to the PS3.

As we aimed down the sights of a sniper rifle, we looked down the barrel of our Sharpshooter and picked off enemy reinforcements attempting to move in on our position. The Wii's fluidity seemed to translate well over into the PS3 and the improved graphics made it that much better.

100 Artists, 25 Years of Zelda

From: http://unrealitymag.com/
by Paul Tassi

Perhaps it’s a bit late to revisit the Zelda 25th Anniversary train, but it’s still the same year so I’m saying it’s alright.

What you see above is a DeviantArt amalgam of over a hundred different artist’s representations of Link over the years. He’s an iconic character, and one that’s seen a ton of different iterations in animation style, even in his official game canon. Here we see even MORE renditions of him, and there are a few that I would definitely like to see make it to a game.

Click on the picture to blow it way up, and hunt through all the awesomeness it has to share.

Activision confirms golden Classic Controller Pro for GoldenEye 007

Written by Valay

Update: Official PR here.

Rumors of a gold-colored Classic Controller Pro have surfaced a number of times, even before GoldenEye 007 was officially announced by Activision. Today, however, the company finally confirmed that it’s the real deal. For $69.99, consumers will be able to purchase a bundle, which will include a copy of GoldenEye 007 and the controller. A stand-alone release of the game itself will also be sold for $49.99, the typical price of Wii titles.

GoldenEye Remake for Wii and DS Leaked by Activision

By
From: http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/

I thought waiting 12 years for a StarCraft sequel was bad, but it turns out we've actually been waiting 13 years for a GoldenEye remake, and we didn't even know it was coming. Many companies have wanted to remake the game, and everybody else has wanted to play it, but it's always been held up by red tape. The James Bond License was bought by Electronic Arts in 1999, and then by Activision in 2007. However, the original GoldenEye 007 game for the Nintendo 64 was owned by Nintendo and Rare, and Rare is now owned by Microsoft, leading to a tragic custody battle over the years. Microsoft wouldn't let Nintendo re-release the original on the Wii's Virtual Console, and Nintendo wouldn't let Rare remake it for the 360's XBLA. Now we know why. Activision has their own remake ready, and it's exclusively for Nintendo's Wii and DS systems.

GoNintendo received an anonymous tip about a leaked Activision survey, with pictures of two covers for a Wii game, a golden Classic Controller, and a new Wii Zapper modeled after the infamous Golden Gun. It also had this tasty quote, revealing that the game will have improved graphics and physics, 8 player online multiplayer, and Daniel Craig will be replacing Pierce Brosnan:

"GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64 was a game that defined a genre. Now, after 13 years of gaming innovation, the legend is re-imagined. Developed from the ground up for the Wii, GoldenEye takes advantage of the latest technology to deliver the same intense experience with today's graphics and physics. Play a modernized version of the classic story with the new Bond (Daniel Craig), more lethal and cunning than ever as you take on missions around the world. Relive all the legendary moments from the original game: St Petersburg, the Caribbean and numerous other levels. Leverage the classic arsenal of weapons and gadgets as you fight Onatopp, Trevelyan and their adversaries, from the classic PP7 to the high tech assault rifle, sniper rifles and even the tank. The enhanced multiplayer experience offers 4 player split-screen like the original and introduces 8 player online matches. GoldenEye is 13 years better, are you?"

But that's not all. Then Eurogamer got their own anonymous tip, learning that the game is about to be announced at E3 and will be released in November. It is being co-developed by the UK-based Eurocom and the US-based n-Space. Eurocom previously worked on another Nintendo 64 Bond game, The World Is Not Enough, and n-Space has worked on some Duke Nukem titles, Geist, and the DS Call of Duty games. We'll have to wait until E3's official announcement, but I think we can assume that Eurocom will be developing the Wii title while n-Space develops the DS title.

I'm not sure how I feel about Daniel Craig sneaking into my pre-Craig Bond games, but then again Casino Royale was a remake of Bond's first adventure so maybe that makes GoldenEye post-Craig Bond? I'm not sure. Either way it's not that important, since Pierce Brosnan never fought Oddjob or Mayday, and it was still great fun in the 1997 game.

Like all late 90's attempts at photorealistic humans and environments, the graphics did age rather poorly over the years. But the gameplay was as solid as they come, and very deserving of a facelift with today's technology. It will be interesting to see how the younger generation of FPS gamers, those who grew up on franchises like Halo and Call of Duty, react to the grandaddy of console FPS games making its triumphant return. It was the best-selling FPS on a home console for 7 years after all, until Halo 2 took its crown. And it's still frequently referred to as the greatest game adaptation of a film ever made.

Personally, I can't wait to see the game's DK and paintball modes with today's graphics, or how many enemies they'll fit on the screen when a security alarm goes off. Klobbs in the Caverns anyone? RCP-90s in the Facility? Rocket launchers in the basement? 1 on 1, Aztec, Slappers Only? Speedruns of the Facility level are going to be all the rage, again.

Netflix on Nintendo Wii is Now Available to Everyone

From: http://mashable.com/

Do you have a Nintendo Wii and a Netflix account? If so, you can now stream Netflix Watch Instantly’s entire library of TV and film content to your TV using your console’s Wi-Fi connection. You’ll need to order a disc from Netflix to do it, but that disc is shipping to anyone who wants it now; previously it was available to only a select few.

Log into your account and go to Netflix.com/Wii, then tap the “Send the FREE Disc!” button and your disc will be on its way, just like any other Netflix disc. You’ll get to keep this one because you’ll need to put it into the console any time you want to watch movies online.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 uses a similar method, but Netflix is integrated into the software of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console — no disc required. Also note that unlike those machines the Wii is only capable of standard definition video, so you won’t be able to enjoy Netflix in high definition.

That won’t matter to millions of Netflix users, however. The Wii is more popular than either the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360 despite its lack of high definition; some people just don’t care that much about HD. Netflix’s web player doesn’t do HD either, so it’s not like Wii owners are missing out on something essential to the Netflix experience.

Update: We’ll note as some of our readers have that Netflix streaming on the Wii is not available to users outside the U.S. We didn’t mention this initially because Netflix does not offer any service at all outside the U.S., but clarification never hurts. Netflix has announced that it plans to launch streaming service in one other country later this year, but further details haven’t been revealed yet.

Netflix beginning shipments of Wii streaming discs

Awesome news for Wii owners looking to veg out with all-day Mystery Science Theatre 3000 marathons (or even watch responsible numbers of TV shows and movies): Netflix announced via its blog that it has started shipping out the discs that enable Instant Streaming on Wii, to "some of our Netflix members."

If the PS3 rollout is any indication, you'll receive an e-mail sometime soon telling you if you're a lucky winner. Of course, if you didn't sign up for a disc, you're not going to get one. You should probably go sign up for one is what we're saying.

Wii workouts: best of the games

By:

These four top personal training videos can get you moving and into shape quickly.

Wii Fit Plus offers a range of new features to help players reinvigorate their workouts, along with exercises and balance games, like Rhythm Kung Fu, above, designed to keep them fun.

When Nintendo's Wii console came out, couch potatoes across the country rejoiced. Here was a way to get in shape and play video games at the same time! But the bowling, tennis and other early sports titles ultimately delivered less-than-challenging workouts.

Several years later, the Wii has become a more legitimate fitness tool, with a number of personal training titles that promise to burn fat and build muscle.

Not all of them deliver. Some are too easy, too boring or just too repetitive. And working out with the Wii requires more of an initial learning curve than simply mirroring a fitness DVD. Not only must you concentrate on proper form, you have to make sure your Wiimote is pointing in the right direction or your workout will grind to a halt.

On the plus side, personal training games are much more interactive than a fitness DVD, allowing you to customize your workout, music and intensity depending on how you feel on any given day. Your digital coach will encourage you, chastise you when you slack off and drive you to beat your previous score —something a DVD can't do.

We reviewed the top personal training games for the Wii and chose four of the titles most likely to whip you into shape quickly.

EA Sports Active; and EA Sports Active: More Workouts

If nonstop squats and lunges make you yawn, this game is for you. It blends athletic-style training with short sports bursts such as jogging, rollerblading, basketball and tennis to keep you interested.

After creating your profile and on-screen doppelganger, you can choose a 30-day get-in-shape, circuit-training challenge or pick from a large number of preset cardio and toning workouts of different lengths (rated from easy to hard).

The workouts — led by a picture-in-picture trainer — are challenging enough, and each exercise is broken down in a video before you start each move. Of course, this makes the workout longer, but it's necessary — at least at first — for form and so you know how to position the Wiimote on each move.

If you don't get that direction right, or if you don't pause long enough at the top of a rep, the game will freeze until you correct it. It's frustrating that there's more emphasis on form with the controller than on how you should tuck your hips or position your legs.

During the workout, your trainer urges you on with a few stock comments such as "Great enthusiasm on that exercise. Way to work it!" There's also feedback and a calorie count estimate at the end.

A Velcro leg strap sold with the game holds the required nunchuk controller during running and lower body work. The strength moves use an included resistance band, and the game is compatible with the Wii Balance Board (sold separately).

Once you have this equipment and are ready for some new exercises, you might be motivated to move on to EA Sports Active: More Workouts, the update (without leg strap and band) released in November.

List price for EA Sports Active: $59.99; EA Sports Active: More Workouts: $39.99

The Biggest Loser

If you're inspired to get into shape by the miraculous transformations on the popular NBC show "The Biggest Loser," you'll like this in-home version from THQ.

In this game, you'll work out with one of its popular trainers — Bob Harper or Jillian Michaels — to meet the fitness goals you set in your profile. Each week there's a competitive weigh-in on the Wii Balance Board to motivate you to "bring it" and "dig deeper" in your workouts.

There isn't the same variety of activities and scenery that you find in EA Sports, but its digital trainers provide a greater range of encouragement, prodding and verbal coaching on form.

The workout moves a little faster too, because you don't have to wade through tutorial videos before starting each exercise. You simply mimic your trainer and listen to his or her cues on form and timing. You can also create custom routines from 88 exercises and pull up recipes from "The Biggest Loser Cookbook."

No weights or resistance bands are needed. All of the toning is accomplished by lifting your own body weight in exercises such as planks, push-ups, squats and lunges. You can compete against another player or previous contestants from the show in special challenges. But as with most Wii fitness games, you can't put too much stock in the calorie counts tallied up at the end.

After a 40-minute workout that left this intermediate exerciser breathless and breaking a sweat, it said I burned a whopping 48 calories.

List price: $39.99

Wii Fit Plus

Wii Fit, the pioneering workout game for the Wii, was updated by Nintendo in October to include more exercises and games, and the option to create customized routines.

Not all of the activities are a slam-dunk if you want to get in shape. Many of the "Training Plus" activities challenge your balance but don't provide a good cardiovascular or strength workout.

And many of the aerobic activities, such as Basic Step, won't provide enough of a workout for anyone beyond a beginner. What you will find, however, are solid yoga and strength moves, and a few fun heart-rate elevating games to play with your character or "Mii," such as Super Hula Hoop, Rhythm Kung Fu and Bird's-Eye Bulls-Eye, a game that has you flapping your arms in a chicken suit to hit targets.

Your time and calorie count are tallied at the end, and you can weigh yourself on the Balance Board to track your progress.

List price: $19.99

Your Shape

This title, from Ubisoft, led by a digital version of actress Jenny McCarthy, rates a mention largely because it's the first to use a motion-detecting camera on top of your television to track your movements, allowing you to exercise without a controller.

Your image is projected onto the screen next to McCarthy's avatar, allowing you to check out your form as you might in the mirror at your gym. It doesn't require any special equipment but will work with your own weights, stability ball and step bench if you have them.

It also has the largest number of exercises — more than 400 — to burn fat and build and stretch your muscles.

Sounds great, right? While wonderful in concept, it doesn't work so well in practice. The video lags a bit, making you work harder to keep pace with your trainer. And you need to have enough room to keep your arms and legs within frame — about 8 feet from the TV.

When the camera can't detect your movements because your feet or arms move out of frame or the background is too dark, you will be told that you're doing the exercise wrong, and annoying on-screen messages flash to "Follow me."

If you're going to use this game, you‘ll just have to expect that it won't recognize your moves correctly for a certain percentage of the time. If you can get past that, you'll get a good heart-pumping workout that exercises multiple muscle groups simultaneously. And, if you decide you don't like the game, that wide-angle Web-compatible camera works pretty well for those Skype sessions.

List price: $69.99

Awesome Ghostbuster Wii Peripheral

Modder Jack Rossi took it upon himself to build the controller for the ‘Ghostbuster Wii’ game that we all dreamed about. Yup, your very own ‘Ghostbuster Proton Pack’.

The replicate ‘Ghostbuster Proton Pack’ is fully functional, even the back pack which tells the player how much power left in the pack and which player is selected in the game. As of now,

Straight from Egon’s lab, after months of Beta testing I bring to you the first ever fully fictional Wii-Proton Pack to be used in conjunction with the Nintentdo Wii version of the Ghostbusters Video game. The cyclotron features four blue LEDs allowing you to know which player is selected or active and the Blue Power Cell actually shows you how much power the pack has. The Thrower has been carefully designed in regards to ergonomics and function. The front of the wand has an area in which you can place the Wii-mote and the back handle is where the Nunchuck is placed. Since the Wii-mote has in internal speaker in it’s ABS housing, when playing the game the pack makes all the iconic Ghostbusters SFX. And being that the Wii utilizes wireless technology, the wand is not tethered to the pack via a cord. I will be shooting some video footage this week and will post it as soon as it’s finished so you can see the pack in action! Thanks for looking!

-Jack

I would definitely wear this for Halloween too! (and..Christmas, Easter, Columbus Day, yeah just about every holiday, I would whip it out)

Jazari: The one man Wii band

It isn't often that you see the fusion of software, hardware and pure creative genius. You can't deny that this is something else entirely -- seriously, you can stop reading here and just watch the video after the cut.

If you're still here, perhaps seeking a little more convincing, get this: Patrick Flanagan, presumably a rather big nerd, has taken two Wii Remotes and bonded them to a bunch of percussion instruments -- bongos, djembes, that kind of thing. Through some homebrew software and some seriously awesome robotics/actuators, his movements and button pushes on the Wiimote make music. He can then create loops, alter the syncopation and even mess with the modulation of the beat. At the end of the video he demonstrates an 'AI mode' where the computer learns from past beats and tries to follow his lead -- awesome.

The entire ensemble is called Jazari. Please watch the video after the break; even if you don't have a single musical or geeky bone in your body, it might just convert you. And no, I can't see a download for the software... alas.

Another Wii Fit Miracle, Woman Loses 112lbs.

February 1, 2010 by Ruibo

A 38-year-old British woman has made another astonishing weight loss miracle due to her strict exercise curriculum (Wii Fit) and healthy dieting.

Lara Roberts, a mother of 2 who was unable to cut down her weight from giving birth to her second child, has now gone from 252 to 140 pounds in a year. Lara Roberts gave the most credit to the Wii Fit for allowing her to work out at home, where she has complete privacy and removes the self-conscious feeling from working out in public.

Losing 112lbs. in a year is definitely no easy task. It takes a lot of motivation and hard work. Her greatest motivating factors are her daughters, whom she loved dearly and hopes to see them grow up. Lara Roberts had to get up 5 a.m. every morning to start her workout on the Wii Fit. Of course, with the Wii Fit work out she also had to fix her eating habit and go on a strict diet to help her lose the weight. The result as you can see from the before and after picture is just amazing.

Before -Around 252 Pounds.

After - Smoking 140 Pounds

Nintendo can definitely have her as a spokes person for Wii Fit and she can totally motivate people to do this too (I mean even I am ready to go out and buy a Wii Fit).

A New NBA Jam Game To Be Released By EA Sports

Posted by Nattyb
nbajam-560x392
Since there aren’t too many big storylines from the NBA lately (other than Gilbert Arenas and the Eastern/Western coaches of the month awards, yawn) I wanted to touch on something that has the potential to be monumental…
Instead, sources confirmed to ESPN that the new title is actually one of the all-time classics coming back to consoles as EA Sports has acquired the rights from the NBA to deliver an updated version of “NBA Jam” that will ship to retail exclusively for the Wii.
Yup, the 1993 (yes 1993) classic that once rocked arcades and sports fans alike is making a comeback.  I’m 30 years old, don’t play video games but can honestly say when this thing hits arcades and Wii systems I’m going to get my ass to the nearest one.
Oh man the memories.  “He’s Heating up!”  “Boomshalaka!”   Remember how good Scottie Pippen was in that game?  Remember Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton as a team?  Good God it was sickening how awesome that game was.
And what about when you could put in codes and have like weird celebrity heads go on the players and stuff?  And remember being that little tiny guy?  What was his name again?  I’m getting antsy just thinking about the return of this game.
They better have the same announcer.

'New Super Mario Bros. Wii' Is As Hard As 'Contra'

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

You see screenshots of "New Super Mario Bros." on the Wii and you scoff. You've played dozens of Mario games in the past. You've rocked the whole "All-Stars" collection, you mastered the Japanese "Super Mario Bros. 2," you think you can handle just about everything. Well "New Super Mario Bros." on the Wii is going to teach you a lesson in humility. It's really hard.

At a demo in New York City this week, Nintendo was showing off some of the new levels from the game. The first they dropped me in was level 8-7 and very near the end of the game. And it showed. You remember those ghost house levels from "Super Mario World" where you had to stay on the moving platform and it slowly chugged past ghosts and other obstacles? Ok, imagine that, but turn the platform into a slavering bone dragon and speed it up by about 3 times. Oh, and throw on three other homicidal friends who would rather jump on your head than let you make a perfectly timed jump. I went in expecting instant success, I left with zero lives and a lower sense of self worth.

Apart from the multiplayer, the difficulty seems to be the most striking thing about "New Super Mario Bros." on the Wii. Completing some of the later levels on your first try is nearly impossible, and you'll probably end up blowing a large cache of lives on a single tricky jump.

And that's where the "Super Guide" comes in. Again, go ahead and scoff. I did. But with such a ramped up difficulty, it makes a lot of sense to let the computer handle the tricky bits for folks. After all, nothing makes you put down a game faster than dying 10 times on the same section. It seems like Nintendo has found a way around that issue.

It's because of the Super Guide that the developers were able to crank up the difficulty, knowing that they no longer needed to make the game for the lowest-skilled player. So you're left with what's arguably the most hardcore Mario game you've ever played. Starting to scoff a little less now, aren't you?

The game's set to drop in the middle of November (a mere week away from another super hardcore title: "Modern Warfare 2), but as far as same-system multiplayer experiences go this holiday season, "New Super Mario Bros." on the Wii is the most promising I've seen.

Wii Remotes help you feel holograms

Matthew Razak

Wii Remotes help you feel holograms photo
japan

Holograms have always disappointed me. This is mostly because they're nothing like what they are in science fiction. Where's the hologram that can go horribly wrong and trap me in gangster era America with the safety protocols somehow broken? I demand holograms that can kill me, and until they exist nothing is going to satisfy my hologram needs. I clearly have a long wait, but we are one step closer as some scientists in Japan have created tactile holograms and part of the process involves using Wii Remotes. Is there anything the Wii Remote can't be used for?

Really the use of the Wii Remote just gives us a good excuse to show off this interesting piece of tech as otherwise it wouldn't really be gaming related. The holographic device uses the Wii Remotes to track the person's hand and the the feeling of things like rain drops or a ball is created by an "Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display." It seems pretty high-tech so I'll just let the video below show it off to you instead of pretending that I know what I'm talking about.

[Thanks, Dexter]

Miyamoto teases new Zelda Wii title, dishes on Natal

Shigeru Miyamoto hosted an intimate Q&A session at E3, and talked about a new Zelda, gave his thoughts on Microsoft's motion-sensing technology, and discussed how he doesn't want you to leave the house without your DS. A glimpse inside the mind of genius.

"I wasn't up on stage at the briefing today, so I'm in a very relaxed mood," the man tells the crowd. There is a long silence, as if no one in the room knows what to do next.

At E3, Nintendo hosted a small question-and-answer event with its personal gold mine: Shigeru Miyamoto. This was also one of the rare E3's where Miyamoto didn't take part in Nintendo press conference, so this gave him the chance to explain the games that were announced and talk at length about what he's thinking about. The stern warnings are of out character with Miyamoto's somewhat impish presence—we were all warned that video and photographs were completely prohibited. But we can listen, and one of the things Miyamoto is working on isn't game related at all.

Miyamoto says he'd like to create programs that allow you to download information about different areas around town. So if you go to a shopping center, he explains, you can download a shopping guide. In Japan, there are already a few examples of this in action. While not game-related, this is what has been taking up much of his time. It seems odd, but he speaks about it in an excited voice.

The idea being that gamers should carry their DS systems around with them wherever they go, and getting information about places you visit gives you an excuse to do just that. In Japan students in some schools use the DS system in their day-to-day lives, and give feedback about the class via the portable.

Of course, all of this is in addition to the clutch of games he's working on with Nintendo. In the free moments he has at E3, he's e-mailing the developers and keeping track of the work being done. What's clear is that Miyamoto doesn't allow himself much time for rest, and he's always cranking on something. When talking about Super Mario Galaxy 2, he shares that the game began life as more of a Mario Galaxy 1.5, a sort of remixed version of the game, but the team got carried away creating new content for the game, and thus it was decided to turn the game into a full sequel.

Another bit of news: The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will feature four-play multiplayer, stemming from Miyamoto's enjoyment of Zelda: Four Swords. We won't be able to play the multiplayer in the version of the game shown at E3, but it will be there for the final version. There is also a new Zelda for the Wii in the works, but Miyamoto decided to work on development instead of bringing it here. He has one piece of artwork he shows, however, and the inability to take pictures becomes maddening.

The image shows Link in front of a fiery background. There's a ghostly-looking woman with a hat and a crystal pendant looking down sadly at his back. It's a beautiful image, but the only other hint is that it's very possible the game could be only played with Wii MotionPlus. "Of course, that depends on how well Wii Sports Resort sells. I'd like you to think of Zelda when you're playing with some of the swordplay in Wii Sports Resort," Miyamoto said.

His thoughts on Microsoft's motion-sensing technology? At Nintendo they like to tweak the technology and make sure it works in the game and come up with the gameplay ideas... and then show it. He looks down and smiles mischievously as the crowd chuckles softly at this answer. "Implementing technology in a way that feels good and feels natural—we've done that with the MotionPlus," he says. That somewhat contradicts the reveal from the press conference earlier today, and someone asks about how he would use the Vitality Sensor. "I think it's a very unique device that I've been interested in for quite a while."

He talks about movements and buttons and even the Balance Board, ways to control games, and expresses some skepticism of people being able to raise or lower their blood pressure of their own volition. He sees the uses for Yoga training, for instance. "When you sleep at night, are you really relaxed all the way through?" he asks. What about the longer term possibilities? They have a device at Nintendo that tests love. Couples hold each other's hands and then touch the device, and it says how much attraction there is between them. He also played with a robot that you could control by concentrating. So maybe using the Vitality sensor they could create a new Pokemon. Did that make sense to anyone else? Miyamoto doesn't seem to know where his thoughts are going to take him, which makes getting straight answers somewhat problematic, but it's clear the device has his wheels turning.

He lists Wil Wright's SimCity as a game that has influenced him, as well as Japanese comics. The very question of what other games he admires makes him groan and look uncomfortable.

It's amazing how much joy he brings to his work. Watching him, in a room filled with gaming writers, playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii and making little noises of joy or surprise is inspiring; this man loves what he does. He created the game, and he's also completely wrapped up in it, hissing softly when he misses a jump, exclaiming happily when he gets a power up.

"This is why we don't allow photography," Miyamoto joked as he died while playing his creation.

Queen Of England Gets Gold-Plated Nintendo Wii

The world's most popular monarch receives a special gold-plated Nintendo Wii, courtesy of publisher THQ.

Original post at Popzara Blogs :

Already the recipient of Presidential iPods and box-set DVDs (non-PAL region), the world's most famous monarch can now claim her stake on yet another popular digital past-time- videogames. Specifically, a gold-plated Nintendo Wii, courtesy of publisher THQwhich hopes to lure Her Majesty and her own extended family into a few endless nights of waggle-induced fun.

Encased in gold and accompanied by a copy of the company's latest family-friend release, BIG Family Games, appropriately enough. So says THQ product manager Danielle Robinson of the royal present:

"But we thought that Her Majesty the Queen wouldn't want to play on any old console, so an extra-special gold one was commissioned. We hope that she and the rest of the Royal Family enjoy the game!"

The Queen can now claim to be the second-most popular world figure to house Nintendo's ubiquitous console, right after US President Barack Obama snatched one up for the White House soon after taking power. No word yet on whether the Queen and First Lady Michelle Obama will continue their burgeoning friendship via a few fast-paced games of Mario Kart Online, but we'll certainly keep you posted! Cheers!
