Indiana Jones And The Bermuda Triangle?

If you watched Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull — and unless you live under that giant rock they used in Raiders, you did — you likely have an opinion on both the movie and the franchise. Some Indy fans walked away from all the fridge-hiding and Shia swinging saying, hey, let’s just pretend this never happened and consider Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade truly the last crusade. The other camp trudged out of theaters thinking, you know what, the only way to rid ourselves of the memory of this thing is to dust of that fedora, pick up the whip and go back in for one last treasure hunt.

Apparently, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg side with that latter camp. If the rumors coming out of New Zealand are true (Stuff via AICN), not only will there be an Indiana Jones 5, but it will take place in the Bermuda Triangle. Sounds pretty fascinating to me, especially if the reports are true and they do steer clear of CGI. With all the aircraft that has allegedly disappeared there, who knows what they could hunt for, or what trouble they could run into? And when I say they I am referring to both Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf, because apparently he’s coming back as Mutt, possibly minus a little grease. I don’t have a problem with that, as Indy 4 was far from his fault even though he took accountability for it while ripping it, which was certainly cool. A large percentage of longtime Indiana Jones fans could potentially react differently, though.

Regardless, Indiana Jones is just about the only way either Ford or Lucas make the news these days, and it seems most moviegoers are ready to give them one more chance. It would certainly be ironic if this film franchise finally disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle, and whether it flies or flops it looks like that will be the case if these Indiana Jones 5 rumors have any substance to them at all.

Woody Harrelson, penalty kick master

No, there isn't a gas leak in your house causing you to hallucinate. That really is actor Woody Harrelson hoisting a trophy while surrounded by the likes of Henrik Larsson, Mike Myers, and Zinedine Zidane (bald head behind Wayne Campbell) after scoring a match-winning penalty in front of more than 65,000 at Old Trafford in Manchester. Unless writing this post is all part of a fever dream of my own, that actually did happen.

Harrelson, who says he didn't take up the sport until he was 40, was the 11th penalty taker for manager Kenny Dalglish's Rest of the World team that took on Harry Redknapp's England side as part of this year's Soccer Aid match, benefiting UNICEF. Both sides were comprised of a number of celebrities and retired footballers (full rosters here) under captains Robbie Williams (England) and Michael Sheen (RotW).

All even at 2-2 after 90 minutes (goals from Jamie Redknapp and Teddy Sheringham for England and Joe Calzaghe and Sami Hyypia for the imposingly named Rest of the World), the match then went to a never-ending, celebrities-only shootout. After misses from Gordon Ramsay and The Mentalist, and makes from Sheen, Ricky Hatton and Mike Myers, Harrelson stepped up to the spot and somehow drove home the winner.

Apple's iPhone 4: What Buyers Need to Know

Apple's iPhone 4 is now official and will be in stores on June 24. Are video calling, a front-facing camera, and the iBooks app enough to make you buy one? If you're on the fence, or trying to figure out if you can afford to invest in Apple's latest gizmo, here's what you need to know about making the switch.

How much will the iPhone 4 cost me?
The iPhone 4 will be offered in a 16 G-byte version and a 32GB version. For new and "upgrade eligible" customers who sign a two-year contract with AT&T, the 16-GB version will cost $199 and the 32-GB version will retail for $299.

Upgrades? I can't just buy a new iPhone 4?
In general, AT&T iPhone customers who spend more than $99 per month per line are eligible for an upgrade when they are between 12 and 18 months into their contract, so that AT&T doesn't lose money on the older iPhone model it has already subsidized. You're not locked out of a new iPhone, but if you do make the switch before your upgrade date, you'll pay $100 more than a new iPhone customer.

The good news is that Steve Jobs announced Monday that AT&T will subsidize iPhone customers upgrading to the iPhone 4 up to six months earlier than their current upgrade date. Now, if your upgrade date occurs before the end of 2010, you can buy the new iPhone 4 for $199 or $299.

If you opt for an "early upgrade," the 16GB will cost $399 and the 32GB will sell for $499.

Any options if I don't want to deal with a two-year AT&T contract?
If you're not jazzed at the prospect of a two-year commitment to AT&T, the 16GB iPhone 4 will cost $599 and the 32GB will retail for $699.

What type of data plans are offered for the iPhone 4?
If you are switching from another carrier or upgrading to a smartphone, AT&T will offer its new tiered data plan. DataPlus will provide 200MB for $15 per month, while DataPro will allow up to 2GB per month for $25. For more information on AT&T's new plan, check out PCMag's guide.

If I already have AT&T, do I need to switch to a tiered data plan?
No. If you are an existing AT&T smartphone user, you don't need to switch to a new plan. You might want to ask specifically about this when talking with AT&T, however. I have a BlackBerry through AT&T, and I called on Monday afternoon to see if my bill would change at all if I upgraded to an iPhone 4 later this month. The customer service rep quoted me the new tiered data plans – 200MB for $15 or $25 for 2GB. When I pointed out that AT&T's iPhone 4 press release said that existing smartphone customers do not have to switch to a new plan, the rep said I was correct and could keep my plan. Granted it's the first day these reps are dealing with iPhone 4 questions, but when it comes to unlimited vs. tiered, I want my unlimited plan.

Any other charges?
Customers with an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or iPhone 3G can add tethering for an extra $20 per month. If you're on a family plan, you can add another line starting at $24.99.

When can I get it?
The iPhone 4 will be available in Apple and AT&T retail stores on June 24. Customers can start pre-ordering the devices on June 15 on the AT&T and Apple Web sites.

The iPhone 4 is a bit pricey. Any deals on older models?
Yes, new and upgrade eligible customers can get the 8-GB version of the iPhone 3GS for $99 with a contract. Early upgraders will pay $299, and those who don't sign a two-year contract with AT&T can get the 8GB iPhone 3GS for $499.

At Apple's developer conference in San Francisco, Steve Jobs unveiled his company's next generation smartphone, the iPhone 4. With over 100 new features, there's a lot to drool over. Here's what gadget geeks are most excited about:

• Pricing and Color Schemes Michael Bettiol at Boy Genius Report writes: "The iPhone 4 will be available in both black and white. The 16GB model will be $199 and the 32GB model will be $299. Both of these prices reflect the 2-year contract price with AT&T. Pre-orders for the US, UK, Germany, France, and Japan will commence on the 15th of June. June 24th is the big day as far as actual availability goes."

• It's Super-Thin, writes Agam Shah at PC World: "The iPhone 4 sports a new look and is the thinnest smartphone, [Jobs] said. At 9.3 millimeters (0.36 inches) thick, the new iPhone is 24 percent thinner than iPhone 3GS."

• 'You Can Bing It,' praises Miguel Helft at The New York Times: "No black eye for Google, but a win for Microsoft. Mr. Jobs announces that in addition to Google, which remains the default search engine, and Yahoo, which was already an option on the iPhone, iOS 4 will give users the option to use Bing for their searches."

• Chip and Battery Overhaul, writes MG Siegler at TechCrunch: "As expected, the iPhone 4 will use Apple’s A4 chip. The device also has a bigger battery than ever before. The combination of these two things allows for 40% better battery life in some situations, Jobs said."

• The Gyroscope, writes Jesus Diaz at Gizmodo: "The new iPhone 4 has a gyroscope built-in. This means that it can track movement with a very high precision, much higher than the built-in accelerometers in the previous iPhones. It's 3-axis, so it's capable of detecting pitch, roll, and yaw. Couple with the accelerometer, you have 6-axis motion sensing."

Black Doctor Arrested Driving To Hospital To Deliver Baby

PULASKI, Tenn. - The city of Pulaski has called in an outside law firm to investigate the arrest of a black doctor by a Pulaski police officer.

Police clocked Dr. Terry Wynn's car going 46 in a 30-mile-per-hour zone last Wednesday night. Wynn is an OB/GYN who was on the way to the hospital to deliver a baby.

She pulled over, and told Pulaski officer Chad Estes she needed to get to the hospital.

Police said she then left the scene and drove less than a mile to the hospital. Officer Estes followed Wynn and arrested her in the hospital parking lot.

"When she took off or sped away, and left him there, that constitutes under Tennessee law, evading arrest in a motor vehicle, which is a felony," said Pulaski Police Chief John Dickey.

The arrest has sparked outrage in Pulaski and even led to a debate online about who was right.

"They didn't look at her as a doctor. They looked at her as a woman of color, and they didn't believe that she was a doctor," said resident Georgia Paige-Peterson. "If they will do that to her I can't imagine what they have done to others."

Immediately after the doctor's arrest, a relative of the woman in labor called the Pulaski police chief and urged him to get the doctor out of jail so she could deliver the baby. Chief Dickey called the jail and had her released before she was officially booked.

"The issue that most concerned me is there was a patient that needed care," said Dickey.

The chief says it's too early to say whether or not his officer did anything wrong. He is waiting for the outside investigation to be finished, but he was adamant that race was not a factor.

"Nothing has surfaced with any of these officers or anybody in this department that we have anything like that going on here," said Dickey.

NewsChannel 5 Investigates discovered this is isn't the first time Officer Estes has been involved in a racially charged arrest. Terra Hollis sued him for violating the civil rights of her 17 year old son.

"To me, it says he's out of control," said Hollis.

Video obtained by NewsChannel 5 Investigates from 2008, shows Trey Hollis leaving a crowded McDonalds as police arrived to break up a fight. Trey was not involved in the fight, but officer Estes grab him and push him against a table.

"They slam him on the table," said Hollis. "They throw him out the door. They slam him on the police car."

Hollis is a basketball player on track to graduate this year. Police also arrested Hollis' grandmother and aunt.

"I was told to shut up and go to my car or I would be arrested," said Hollis.

All charges against the family were dropped. The lawsuit claims the arrests were racially motivated, which Chief Dickey denies.

"People have their opinion and their perception of things and I respect people's feelings, but that doesn't mean I agree with them," said Dickey.

He said the TBI investigated, and a grand jury did not indict officer Estes or anyone else.

Terra Hollis believes if Estes had been disciplined after her son's arrest, the latest incident may not have happened.

"I'm very sad it happened because in my mind I think the incident could have been prevented," said Hollis.

Dr. Wynn could still be charged with evading arrest and, at this time, she is not commenting. Everyone is waiting for the outside investigation to be finished.

The baby's family released a statement saying the baby is healthy. The family said the police officers involved in the arrest of Wynn used bad judgment, and they hope the city takes appropriate steps to keep it from happening again.

IF THIS strange creature growled at you, you wouldn't know whether to run from his sharp claws or pat him on the head and give him a biscuit.

From a distance, its striped orange and black coat makes it look like a particularly odd tiger.

But it's actually a dog, a victim of the latest craze among owners in China to dye their pets to look like other animals.

One young pup even found itself turned black and white to masquerade as a baby panda.

The Chinese are always quick to embrace bizarre trends and it is not unusual for owners to take their dogs to grooming parlours where they are not only given a shampoo and trim, but a multi-coloured dye job as well.

Quite what the animals might think about it is another matter.

The Deepest Sea Diving Suit Is A 40-Year Old Sci-Fi Human Submarine

In case you’re wondering why BP has turned to robots to stop the Deepwater Horizon oil leak 5,000 feet (1,500 m) underwater: the deepest humans have ever gone walking underwater is only 381 meters.

And that was in 1979.

It may not be terribly surprising in an era when we’re better at flying to space than fixing an oil leak. But the technology that made that dive possible is a forty years old sci-fi-esque suit. The JIM atmospheric diving suit, a system that maintains one atmosphere despite external pressures, was built by DHB Construction, and originally envisioned for use by the British oil industry (which notably did not contribute to the suit’s development). It was named after Jim Jarrett, the chief diver of suit designer J. Peress. Motherboard contributor Chris Hatterhill reports at Vice:

Developed in the late 1960s, the JIM Suit took deep-sea diving to a whole new level – both depth-wise and stylistically. Based on earlier old-school diving suits that wouldn’t look out of place in a Captain Nemo lithograph, the JIM updated the all-in-one with a dose of clean 60s sci-fi design. Paving the way for what became known as Atmospheric Diving Suits, the JIM was effectively a one-person submarine. Instead of dealing with complicated gas mixtures, freezing cold water and decompression sickness, you could breath regular air, surface quickly and dress casually inside, with a thick wool jumper being the garment of choice among users.

The original suit, measuring 6’6” and featuring eight movable joints, first saw action in 1974, when it was used to recover lost oil tanker chains in the Canary Islands. Two years later, it was used on an extreme dive in the Arctic, working on an oil well at a depth of 275 meters for six hours.

The Deepest Dive
It was in 1979 that American oceanographer Sylvia Earle (video above — see 3:11) set a world record in the JIM Suit, descending to a depth of 381m before detaching from the ship to walk across the sea floor. For two and a half hours, she strolled along the bottom untethered, browsing a gorgeous array of mysterious undersea life. It was the deepest such walk before or since. The experience inspired Earle to work on mini-submarines with one of JIM’s engineers, Graham Hawkes.

The JIMs were still in use during the 1980s, including in the recovery of a Wellington Bomber from Loch Ness in 1986. But they were soon overtaken by its more advanced successor, the WASP suit.

By 1990, the JIM suit had gone out of commercial operation (DHB had been acquired by undersea engineering firm Oceaneering), and today resides mainly in museums. It was also committed to celluloid twice, once in the James Bond film “For Your Eyes Only”, and again in the 1989 sci-fi/horror film DeepStar Six.

Apple’s new iPhone 4 is the company’s biggest update yet for the handset and it will have you drooling.

The phone is a snazzily slim, glass-backed slab that boasts some impressive specs: dual cameras, a big operating system update and video chat, among other things.

Apple introduced the phone at its developer conference Monday and said it will be available on AT&T’s network starting June 24.

But when the iPhone 4 hits retail shelves it will have to battle a gaggle of Android devices for consumer attention — the most significant of which is the HTC Evo. The Evo has one big advantage that Apple can’t beat. It runs on Sprint’s 4G network, while the iPhone is stuck on AT&T’s 3G service. Sprint 4G, though, is not available in most major cities, including San Francisco and New York.
