Nike Will Sell Back To The Future Themed Shoes With Power Laces!

A few hours ago we told you here about an ominous tweet from Back to the Future producer Frank Marshall promising some sort of big, BTTF themed announcement. At the time we speculated that it might have something to do with rumors that Nike will release shoes with power laces. And now… we know it’s true.

It seems several people, like NiceKicks.com have received invitations to a secret unveiling. An unveiling which, the invitations to which, would seem to indicate they are about to start selling a BTTF themed shoe. Here’s what the invites look like:

And the box they come in contains these… replicas of the shades worn by Doc Brown after he returns from the future:

Marshall just tweeted this video, which pretty much confirms the whole thing:

That’s right, power laces are coming.

Here’s hoping hover boards won’t be far behind.

We’ll update you with more details on when and where you can buy them, as soon as Nike makes their big announcement. Someone point me to a store, I’m ready to get in line right now.

Nike’s “It’s Gotta Be The Shoes” commercial featuring Michael Jordan and Mars Blackmon (Spike Lee’s alter ego, for those who didn’t know) was a classic. Who can forget Mars grilling Michael with question after question regarding what makes him the best player in the universe, only to have each of his guesses turned down with the same answer – “No Mars.”

Playboy took a shot at recreating this masterpiece as they get set to rank the top 23 Air Jordans ever. And while it can be difficult to replace the brilliant acting of Spike Lee and the incredible skills of Michael Jordan, Playboy was able to find a more than adequate replacement in the lovely Francesca Frigo.

I know most of us may be skeptical at times when it comes to remakes and sequels, but I don’t expect to hear many complaints in this case. After all, wouldn’t you like to hear this busty babe attempt to answer the question, “What makes Playmates the sexiest girls in the universe?”

I still think its the big boobs.

Nike files patent for auto-lacing sneakers, Marty McFly doth protest

We've seen some extremely DIY auto-lacing sneakers, but it looks like the big boys -- Nike -- have thought about getting in on the game as well. Patent filings which occurred in early through late 2009 show off an automatic lacing system that is pretty reminiscent of Marty McFly's invention in Back to the Future, and we can tell you that from the looks of it, it's a future we'd definitely like to inhabit. The shoes appear to boast a charging system and lights in addition to the lacing component, and while so few patent apps ever lead to a real retail product, we're really rooting for this one. 'Back to the Future' Inspired Shoes Really Tie Themselves

'Back to the Future,' like America, just had a birthday (although it only turned 25), and our feeds are blowing up with McFly-related memorabilia. Back in 2008, Nike released a pair of special edition 'Back to the Future II' inspired high-tops, but, as badass as the Marty McFly 2015 Nike Hyperdunks were, they lacked one important feature: the ability to tie themselves. Just in time for the cult movie's anniversary, ingenious do-it-yourselfer Blake Bevin strapped micro-controllers and motors to a pair of brightly hued Jordans in order to bring the futuristic footwear to life.

The design is simple, if a bit cumbersome in its execution. A pressure-sensitive plate in the heel of the shoe is connected to the impressively versatile Arduino micro-controller. When the Arduino detects that you've stepped into the sneaker, it activates a pair of servos that pull the laces tight. When it's time to slip out of the Hyperdunks, a touch-sensitive switch, mounted on the back of the shoe, reverses the servos.

Bevin's design is a little too bulky to be practical, but here's hoping some sneaker shop picks it up, and gives her invention the miniaturization treatment it deserves. To see it in action, check out the the video after the break. [From: Instructables, via: DVice]

Giant sculpture made out of 3000 balls for the World Cup

Nike is continue to impress with their advertisement methods. This huge sculpture, which has been named Ballman, is made with almost 3,000 footballs suspended from steel wire ropes giving the illusion that it is floating in the air. It is located inside shopping centre in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Ballman will stay in place for the whole World Cup tournament , and when dismantled, the plan is that the balls will be given away.

If you are a World Cup fan, then you will probably like these posters made for every team on tournament.

Nike Airing New Tiger Woods' Commercial During Masters

Not many people stood by Tiger Woods as his personal life was falling apart. And even fewer sponsors seemed to be by his side.

Nike, however, can count themselves among the loyal. Which is probably why they're the first sponsor to feature Tiger in a commercial, which will air beginning Wednesday night.

"We support Tiger and his family as he returns to competitive golf," said Nike spokesman Derek Kent. "The ad addresses his time away from the game using the powerful words of his father."

The ad, seen below (via Darren Rovell at CNBC), features Tiger -- in black and white -- staring into the camera with the familiar voice of his father asking questions in a presumably omniscient manner.

Earl Woods says, "Tiger, I am more prone to being inquisitive, to promote discussion," Earl says in the spot. "I want to find out what your thinking was. I want to find out what your feelings are. And did you learn anything?"

This isn't the first time Tiger and Nike have used his father in commercials; one of the most awesome displays of marketing came around Father's Day in 2008 when they played Earl's voice over clips of the two practicing golf and some sentimental music (the "You'll never meet someone as mentally tough as you ..." commercial; embedded below the new ad).

The only issue here is that whereas Nike harnessed their ability to market and combined it with a very touching appeal to fathers and sons -- while the appeal to second chances here does make sense, something about the commercial as a whole comes off a tad bit off.

Is it the combination of appealing to the consumer for forgiveness amid a pile of swooshiness all while using Earl's voice? Well, it might be. Having said that, Nike stuck by Tiger throughout this whole sordid mess, so, by all means, advertise away.

Nike Skateboarding Heavens Gate Dunk Shoes -- $3000? WTF?

Rumors are swirling that Nike discontinued work on this sweet black-and-purple prototype Dunk shoe because it reminded consumers too much of the Heaven's Gate cult mass suicide. Really? On the Nike Skateboarding blog, they offer up this image of the shoe side-by-side with one of the victims of the Heaven's Gate suicide to prove their point.

So, the idea is that because the shoes match the colors of the suicide victim, the shoe was discontinued? If you'll recall, the web design company/cult known as Heaven's Gate believed that they were going to be taken up by aliens associated with the Hale-Bopp comet, so they timed their suicides to coincide with its arrival. But is there really a connection between these sneakers and the cult? It's true that the Heaven's Gaters were known for all wearing matching black Nikes, but I don't see Nike discontinuing their line of all-black Dunks.

Still, the flimsiness of the rumors haven't stopped eager entrepreneurs from trying to make a ton of cash from selling the prototypes on E-bay. I love the way the E-bay seller pretends that the shoes were actually called "Heaven's Gate." You too could be suckered out of $3,000, so act now! [via E-bay]
