Given the car's iconic classic/futuristic status, it's no surprise that the DeLorean DMC-12 is a popular car for DIY electric car conversions. That an honest-to-goodness official DeLorean EV is coming from Humble, Texas' reborn DeLorean Motor Company itself, though? That we did not see coming. It makes sense, though. If you're gonna build a time machine electric car, why not do it with some style?
Announced Friday night at the DMC Texas Open House, DMC said it plans to work with electric car startup Epic EV to get an all-electric DMC-12 into production by 2013. Epic is the company started by Aptera co-founder Chris Anthony that is working on the Torq and Amp vehicles (and some rather clever videos). Early reports say the Electric DeLorean will have a maximum speed of 125 miles per hour and offer 260 horsepower for something like $90,000-100,000. The gullwing doors should remain, but we're not sure where the motor will go (the original DeLorean used a rear-mounted engine), let alone the battery pack. This isn't the first time a DeLorean with an alternative powertrain has been talked about. Before his death in 2005, John DeLorean hinted that a hydraulic hybrid drivetrain might find a home in a relaunched DMC-12. That never happened, of course.
Specific technical details on the upcoming DeLorean Electric are sparse, but we're pretty sure it will be able to recharge its 1.21 gigawatt-hour battery instantly when connected to the right power source. You know, until the inevitable Mr. Fusion model gets the green light.
Get out your lightning rods and Sony Walkmans, this is going to be fun to watch.
A few hours ago we told you here about an ominous tweet from Back to the Future producer Frank Marshall promising some sort of big, BTTF themed announcement. At the time we speculated that it might have something to do with rumors that Nike will release shoes with power laces. And now… we know it’s true.
It seems several people, like NiceKicks.com have received invitations to a secret unveiling. An unveiling which, the invitations to which, would seem to indicate they are about to start selling a BTTF themed shoe. Here’s what the invites look like:
And the box they come in contains these… replicas of the shades worn by Doc Brown after he returns from the future:

That’s right, power laces are coming.

"Back to the Future" franchise geeks are buzzing with intrigue over a nondescript viral video form Argentina that features the iconic DeLorean that made every adolescent of the '80s want to travel through time. Featuring Christopher Lloyd as the film trilogy's famous wacky scientist Doc Brown, the video shows the sports car speeding down a city street, and then stopping in front of a store, before Lloyd gets out of the vehicle. "Great Scott!" he declares. "What year is this? 2011?! Yes!"
It's unclear whether the video is an ad of some kind, or possibly a teaser for another "Back to the Future" installment. Movie buffs across the land are scratching their heads in wonder.
According to the video below that was shot by viewers of the event on the street, the scene was produced for a commercial. Unfortunately, this video is cut short and no details are given.
Either way, The "Back to the Future" trilogy will go down in history as a timeless (pun intended) sci-fi saga. In what year and setting would you like to see a potential fourth installment take place?

Stoltz’s resemblance to Fox is eerie, and he’s a great actor, no doubt, but it’s clear that Zemeckis made the right call:

It’s no secret that this year is the 25th Anniversary of Back to the Future. The BluRays come out in a couple weeks, there’s going to be a very limited theatrical re-release in the US, and on the Spike TV 2010 Scream awards there will be a small cast reunion. To promote that, Michael J. Fox recreated the film’s original teaser trailer perfectly. Check out the recreation, and original, below.
One of the most famous instances of replacement casting has to be the Back to the Future Eric Stoltz/Michael J. Fox switcheroo. If you're not familiar...well, you're about to be. Long story short, BttF director Robert Zemeckis made a last minute change to the casting of the time travel classic...a couple weeks into filming.
In the clip, Zemeckis explains how it went down and for the first time, you'll get a glimpse of Stoltz acting in some of the movie's classic scenes. A true gift of Blu-ray box sets! We've seen some extremely DIY auto-lacing sneakers, but it looks like the big boys -- Nike -- have thought about getting in on the game as well. Patent filings which occurred in early through late 2009 show off an automatic lacing system that is pretty reminiscent of Marty McFly's invention in Back to the Future, and we can tell you that from the looks of it, it's a future we'd definitely like to inhabit. The shoes appear to boast a charging system and lights in addition to the lacing component, and while so few patent apps ever lead to a real retail product, we're really rooting for this one. The design is simple, if a bit cumbersome in its execution. A pressure-sensitive plate in the heel of the shoe is connected to the impressively versatile Arduino micro-controller. When the Arduino detects that you've stepped into the sneaker, it activates a pair of servos that pull the laces tight. When it's time to slip out of the Hyperdunks, a touch-sensitive switch, mounted on the back of the shoe, reverses the servos.
Bevin's design is a little too bulky to be practical, but here's hoping some sneaker shop picks it up, and gives her invention the miniaturization treatment it deserves. To see it in action, check out the the video after the break. [From: Instructables, via: DVice]
Replica of Marty McFly's Hoverboard Actually HoversNils Guadagnin
The closer we get to the year 2015, the louder people lament that our world hardly resembles the one depicted in Back to the Future II. Although it will be awhile before any of us coast around in a flying Delorean, we've piped down our complaints, as a young French artist named Nils Guadagnin has built an exact, actually-hovering replica of Marty McFly's pink hoverboard.
Guadagnin began the project in 2008 for an exhibition titled -- drum roll -- "Back to the Future." Electromagnets allow the board to levitate, while a laser system stabilizes it mid-hover. Although you can't actually ride the board, it does hold up remarkably well when poked and prodded. Check out the video below to see Guadagnin demonstrate:
On his website, Guadagnin says that he built the hoverboard as a study in sculpture and as an experiment in spatial automony, but what we really want to know is if he's putting it up for sale. (Dibs.)
Someone spent a loooooooot of time building a near exact replica of the DeLorean from Back to the Future and now they're hawking it on eBay for you, or someone with more money than you, to purchase. I actually saw this very DeLorean at a car show in Culver City, CA this past Summer, and I have to say it's a pretty amazing contraption. The only downside is it doesn't come equipped with a flux capacitor, arguably the coolest part of the DeLorean in the film, and the interior smells like the remains of Christopher Lloyd's career. That stuff's like cigarette smoke, it just doesn't come out.
So far there's been one bid on Doc's DeLorean and it's currently at $59,000.00 with the reserve price unmet. If you choose, you can also purchase the car at the current "Buy It Now" price of $89,000.00.
