What makes this particular "like new" copy so valuable is its rarity – only a handful are known to be in existence – and the fact that it's signed by the game's creator, Alekséi Pázhitnov.

The flying car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang from the famous Dick Van Dyke film (eBay).

A car alleging to be the original hero car from Ian Fleming's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has wound up on eBay, apparently in running condition. According to the seller, the film's production manager insisted that the hero car be a fully-functional road car, not just a mock up.

To that end, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang sports a 3.0-liter Ford V6 and automatic transmission, mounted in a one-off ladder frame. The body features a handmade aluminum hood and red and white cedar boattail rear. Unfortunately, none of Chitty's magical powers made it to the road car, meaning this thing won't fly.

The seller claims that all the brasswork on the car came from actual Edwardian-era cars, to make sure Chitty Chitty Bang Bang looked as true-to-life as possible. That sounds like a lot of work to go into a car for Hollywood, even a hero car.

The seller provides a convincing back story on the car, but there's no official documentation shown or offered. This is no-doubt a well-built car, and very well could be the original from the movie, but at a starting bid of $1,000,000, we'd need a lot of confirmation before pulling the trigger. Not that we could afford it anyway...

eBay Offers To Pay You To Recycle Your Old Electronics

eBay has launched a new program that lets people trade in their old cell phones and other electronics for instant cash. If the devices aren't worth a dime, it will send you pre-paid postage to responsibly recycle the device.

With the company's new InstantSale website, you'll be offering up your old device to various companies in the business of buying them for valuable metals, components and refurbishing. You plug in details about your device and you get an instant cash offer, deposited to your PayPal account. If the thing is a brick phone from the 1980's and worth nothing, then eBay will send you a shipping label to send it to a responsible recycler.

Wait, if it really is a brick phone, you might want to list it as an auction item. Brick phones these days have become collector's items. I found one "very rare" Nokia P-30 Brick Cell Phone listed for $449. That would get you two-thirds of the way towards the shamefully overpriced Samsung Galaxy Tab Android tablet.

But let's say the device is just oldish or broken, or you tried selling it on the auction and no one bites and you don't want to store it for a couple of decades until it reaches collectable status. The InstantSale site will pay for your shipping to the buyer (or the recycler). And eBay promises it will wipe the device of all personal data. The program covers a pretty wide variety of electronics including laptops, phones, tablets, PDAs, digital cameras, MP3 players, camcorders and GPS systems.

Responsible recycling is a big, and growing, problem. According to the EPA, 20 to 50 million metric tons of e-waste are generated worldwide every year, and have become 5% of all municipal solid waste. They leave behind lead, cadmium, mercury and other hazardous wastes. Yuck. Not good for the earth, the groundwater or nearby water sources affected by runoff. And unscrupulous recyclers have been found to be scamming people into donating their items and then illegally shipping the ones not fit for refurbishing to third-world countries to poison the earth there. Earlier this month, the UK environmental agency arrested nine people on such a scheme.

Sure, there are plenty of retailers that will accept your old electronics for recycling, Target, for instance, or Dell. But eBay's approach is nice in that there's a chance you can still re-coop a few bucks on a device that probably cost you hundreds.

The highest ticket item? A 1938 Elgin Robin Shat Drive Prototype bike which went for $30,302 in July after starting at a comparatively measly $1,500.

One of the oddest items to get attention? One West Coast Choppers/Monster Garage soap on a rope which garnered $76.95.

Over 12 months, 227 buyers gave James positive reviews with only 2 negative comments about shipping issues. His “positive feedback” score is 99.5%.

Old Nintendo System & 5 Games Sells for $13,105 on eBay

Another eBay seller has stumbled onto a small fortune with the listing of an old Nintendo system and 5 other games which includes the original: Mario/Duck Hunt, Mario 3, Turtles 2, ‘MLB’ and Family Fitness Stadium Events.
As awesome as Turtles 2 and Mario 3 is; they’re not the game that’s banging in the $13,000 on this auction. The rare game of the 5 is Stadium Events. Some have suggested only about 2,000 were produced and sold. A recall has reduced the total amount in households to maybe 200. The numbers are only estimates, the actual figure is unknown. The box itself is about 75% of the of the $13k and according to Wikipedia, Stadiun Events is named #6 on a list of 20 “Holy Grails of Console Gaming”, a list that covered all gaming systems in all countries.

Student sells virginity for $45k

A cash-strapped New Zealand student who auctioned off her virginity to help pay for university said she had accepted an offer of $NZ45,000 to sleep with a stranger.

The 19-year-old offered her virginity to the highest bidder in an online auction and said there had been more than 1,200 bids.

"I have accepted an offer in excess of $45,000, which is way beyond what I dreamed," the student said on her web page when the auction ended.

"Thank you to the more than 30,000 people who viewed my ad and to the more than 1,200 offers made."

Calling herself "unigirl", the young woman had described herself as attractive, fit and healthy and said she had never been in a sexual relationship.

She did not respond to media requests for an interview but the proprietor of the website, Ross MacKenzie, told the Waikato Times newspaper he had been authorised to confirm the transaction.

The advertisement drew wide reaction in New Zealand, which has some of the world's most liberal laws on prostitution.

A woman is legally entitled to seek payment for sex and Mr MacKenzie said there was no reason for his website not to accept the advertisement.

"Our approach is provided it's not illegal or offensive, we'll run the ad," he said.

Bruce Pilbrow of the organisation Parents Inc told the New Zealand Herald it was "horrifically sad" the woman had to sell herself to meet tuition costs, but sexologist Blair Bishop described it as "just a novel form of sex work".

Catherine Healy, of the New Zealand Prostitutes Collective, urged the teenager to contact her organisation for "practical information" on the realities of sex work.

Own the 'Back to the Future' DeLorean and Be Awesome

Someone spent a loooooooot of time building a near exact replica of the DeLorean from Back to the Future and now they're hawking it on eBay for you, or someone with more money than you, to purchase. I actually saw this very DeLorean at a car show in Culver City, CA this past Summer, and I have to say it's a pretty amazing contraption. The only downside is it doesn't come equipped with a flux capacitor, arguably the coolest part of the DeLorean in the film, and the interior smells like the remains of Christopher Lloyd's career. That stuff's like cigarette smoke, it just doesn't come out.

So far there's been one bid on Doc's DeLorean and it's currently at $59,000.00 with the reserve price unmet. If you choose, you can also purchase the car at the current "Buy It Now" price of $89,000.00.

Rare Nintendo Test Cartridge on eBay

Auction is already over $1,000 for a completely useless NES cart.

Collectors. I'll never understand 'em. TechEBlog pointed out an eBay auction a few days ago concerning an NES Joystick Test Cartridge. With a little over two days still to go on the auction, 14 people have bid on the item, pushing the current bid over $1,000. Obviously, the appeal is that this item was never released to the public or intended to be sold.

This is a Joystick Test Cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System. These carts were given to game stores to test their Nintendo Entertainment Systems and were suppose to be returned to the company that provided the carts. These are very hard to find since they were never sold on the market. Any NES Collector could appreciate the value of such an item. There is wear on the label as can be seen in the picture.

That's a large amount of money for something which is essentially useless, and more to the point, there's more likely a few of them hanging around in the back rooms of WallMarts all over the country.

Can I please refer you to the case of "people with too much money?"

Name a Newly Discovered Species of Deepwater Shrimp

The Australian Marine Conservation Society is holding an Ebay auction to name a newly discovered species of deepwater shrimp.

Proceeds from the auction will go towards their marine conservation efforts. The auction will be open until March 31st.

Anna McCallum who is a graduate student at the University of Melbourne discovered the shrimp in the southwestern waters off Australia at a depth of about 400 meters. She decided to put the naming of the shrimp up for auction to raise money for conservation. The spotted shrimp has an unusual crest like a mohawk, and is about 5 cm. long.

The first part of the name has already been determined to be Lebbeus, because that is the family of shrimp the new one fits into taxonomically. The second part of the name will be determined by the winner of the auction. The convention is the second word in the name ends in the letter “i” for a male name and “ae” for a female name.

For example, if Keith Urban won the auction and wanted to honor his wife, Nicole Kidman, the shrimp’s name would be Lebbeus Nicolae. If Kevin Rose wins the auction he could choose Lebbeus Kevini. The name of the shrimp can not be that of a business entity, such as Lebbeus Diggi. Businesses, however, can participate in the auction.

The auction’s winner will also receive a painting by the artist Mali Moir. Also living in the same area of the unnamed shrimp are blue whales, bluefin tuna, and Australian fur seals. Less than one percent of the area currently has legal protection. Eighty percent of the species there are endemic, meaning they live only there.

Older iPhone Prototypes Show up on Ebay

It looks like someone got their mitts on a piece of technology history over at 1 Infinite Loop. Someone is selling some prototype iPhones with a wacky pre-iPhone type of OS on it. One of the iPhones actually even works.

Update: Someone (Apple?) has taken the Auction off of Ebay. It was last seen around $2500

Here is a quite rare and collectable example of iPhone prototypes, one even running a beta OS. Only one of the phones works however. Neither unit says "iPhone" on them anywhere, or list the storage capacity which is interesting. I did some research on the serial numbers, it appears they were both manufactured about 6 months before the release of the iPhone.

Phone #1:
-Powers on OK - GSM service works
-Plastic matte screen (see pics)
-Serial number YM649xxxxxx which corresponds to a factory in China, manufactured week 49 of the year 2006.
-Runs iPhone OS 03.06.01_G (iPhone Launch OS 1.0 was version 03.11.02_G)
-Good cosmetic condition

Phone #2:
-Doesn't turn on (tried leaving on charger for awhile, along with various reset procedures)
-Glass screen
-Serial number YM650xxxxxx which corresponds to a factory in China, manufactured week 50 of the year 2006. (The iPhone was announced on Jan 6 2007 and release June 29 2007.)
-I replaced the battery and still doesn't work. Currently apart right now, can leave as-is for buyer or reassemble.
-Has various scratches, it is in fair cosmetic condition at best

The phone that works is pretty neat to use. It does make calls(with my ATT sim), and I can surf the net. However when I did get to web pages they were the mobile versions, not the regular versions. I can't figure out how to set a ringtone, it is just silent right now. I can receive SMS but not compose my own, other than 5 included test messages. It doesn't sync to itunes. Camera seems to work. It has tons of testing options.

Also, the working phone has several interesting subtitles that alternate on the screens including:

The phones also comes with a really nice soft case for each. I can guarantee that the working phone will work when you get it, but nothing else beyond that. Want a Better Way to Search Amazon and eBay? Try PicClick

Searching Amazon and eBay sometimes feels a bit archaic – the look and feel hasn’t changed all that much over the years, and the search results can be cumbersome. PicClick is a new visual search tool that looks to improve this process, offering a thumbnail view of dozens of items for a given search.

To use the service, you simply enter in a search term, a minimum/maximum price, and a zip code. PicClick will then search Amazon or eBay, presenting you a list of thumbnail pics and prices for products matching the search. Alternatively, you can browse by category, like Electronics, Home & Garden, or Sporting Goods. For more information on a product, you simply click on the thumbnail, which takes you to the respective product page on Amazon or eBay.

The site was built by Ryan Sit, the same developer who brought us ListPic, a similar tool for searching Craigslist that was shut down last year by the classifieds site. I asked him if he thought PicClick might meet a similar fate, to which he responded, “[it] shouldn’t, PicClick is an approved eBay compatible application, which means it went through some eBay certification and they checked it out. Plus eBay and Amazon both have open APIs so as far and I know this type of thing is encouraged .”

Assuming Sit is correct, PicClick is an elegant and simple tool that is more enjoyable to use than the built-in search tools on eBay and Amazon. If it’s at all successful, Sit should make a few dollars this holiday season too, as anything people buy after clicking through from PicClick will earn him referral fees through Amazon and eBay’s respective affiliate programs.
