Electric Tron Lightcycle Is Street-Legal & Amazing

from: http://mashable.com/

There’s no denying it: every Tron fan pictured himself on one of those amazingly designed, super-fast bikes from the movie. Parker Brothers Choppers turned that dream into reality a year ago, when they created the first Tron Lightcycle, but now they’ve taken it a step further and turned the gas-guzzling beast into an electric bike.

The all-new Electric Tron Lightcycle is powered by a 96 volt electric motor and lithium ion batteries. Its top speed is in excess of 100 mph, and its range is 100 miles on a single range, with a mere 35-minute recharge time.

As for practicality, we’re not experts on motorcycles, but it does seem a bit hard to ride. We guess it’s a small price to pay for the looks you’ll be getting when riding this beauty — especially at night, when the bike lights up just like the one in the movie. .

Pricing and availability are unknown at this point, but as a reference, the old, gas-powered version costs close to $55,000. Check out a video of the Electric Tron Lightcycle in action below.

Daft Punk's path to 'Tron: Legacy' was not an easy one

From: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/

This is Part 2 of Chris Lee's story from his rare interview with Daft Punk. Today, we see how the duo worked on the score for "Tron: Legacy" and whether more soundtracks are in the works. (To read Part 1, click here.)

Daftoldbw_g9hm1mkeAfter a year of reflection in which "Tron: Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski continued to detail his vision for "Tron: Legacy" to them, Daft Punk duo Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter agreed to take the plunge as a means of learning to "widen the palette" of Daft Punk's sound. And in 2008 Disney arranged to have the band mates meet with several of the most successful soundtrack composers working today about potentially collaborating: Hans Zimmer, Harry-Gregson Williams, John Powell and Christophe Beck among them.
Bangalter, 35, said: "They were very generous and very open, sharing a lot of technical advice."
"And warnings," De Homem-Christo, 36, added. "They said, 'You have to make your vision understood. It's not easy. You're serving a movie. You're not just serving the director, you're serving a team of people. It's always about changing and going back.' "

The band ultimately scrapped any collaboration plans. And the task of telling the studio fell to Kosinski, a successful commercial director with no feature film background. "It was considered a huge risk for Disney," Kosinski said. "A director who had never done a feature before and composers who hadn't scored a movie before."

'Electronic sketches'

After the two relocated to Los Angeles, scoring began in earnest in January 2009. Nevermind that "Tron: Legacy" still had no script, only concept drawings to illustrate set pieces and characters. De
Homem-Christo and Bangalter decided that an orchestral score employing subtle electronic cues -- rather than vice versa -- would be most appropriate to "paint that epic quality" the film dictated. So the duo applied the same kind of musical cross-pollination responsible for its gold-certified 1997 debut album "Homework" and commercial breakthrough "Discovery" to recording violin arpeggios, surging horns and roiling timpani.

Daftpunkontron-v_ld4ptfnc

"In dance music, we've always tried to combine existing genres -- heavy metal and disco or funk, something that contrasts associations," Bangalter said. "[For the film], we liked the idea of a dark influence reminiscent of some electronic scores of the '70s. But at the same time, we wanted the scope of classic Hollywood. To mash up those things that usually exist on opposite ends of the spectrum."

The group hooked up with music arranger and orchestrator Joseph Trapanese, whose job was
to translate Bangalter and De Homem-Christo's ideas into symphonic arrangements. They provided him with "extensive electronic sketches" -- synthesizer approximations of orchestral music and iTunes playlists running the gamut of 20th century film composers that were indicative of the "timeless" vibe they wanted.

"They had this very clear and distinct idea of what the orchestra should sound like," Trapanese said. "They gave me an overall tone to work in. Maybe they couldn't physically transcribe what music for, say, a cello. But they know how a cello sounds and how to translate ideas to it."

Tonally, Bangalter explained: "We thought it was very important that the score not sound like real world music. It could not feel 2010 in any aspect."

In July 2010, Trapanese helped actualize Daft's vision for the score over a five-day recording session with an 85-piece orchestra at London's AIR Lyndhurst studios. "My role was as the interface between the robots and the orchestra," he joked.

Daftgetty-400_ldawiync For his part, Kosinski says he understands why Daft Punk wanted to diverge from the repetitive, sample-and-synthesizer-based template that has served such epochal dance floor anthems as "One More Time." And he feels the new music fuses electronic and orchestral music in ways that serve the scope and sweep of "Tron: Legacy."

"It was always conceived as a blend," Kosinski said. "What evolved over that first year was the ratio. The original thinking was more electronic music with classical orchestral lines in it. As the process evolved, when they got down to writing the final cues, it became much more orchestral than any of us initially anticipated. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out."

Even in the face of acclaim for the group's new musical direction, though, the influential music review website Pitchfork panned the soundtrack, lamenting the "gloom of blown expectations" and basically calling into question whether Daft Punk had sold its soul to Hollywood.

Bangalter and De Homem-Christo said they have no plans to record another soundtrack anytime soon and hinted at the release of new Daft Punk music: "Making music for a movie is very humbling," Bangalter said. "We've been working on some of our music concurrently." (They declined to specify touring or album release plans.)

With typically Gallic shrugs, the band mates also said they have learned to live with being tarred and feathered as "commercial."

"We like the idea of trying to experiment and do different things we haven't done in the past," said Bangalter. "Our idea of selling out is a different one, though. I imagine it would be finding a successful formula and sticking with it and always doing the same thing. That is not what is exciting to us."

Ice Hotel In Sweden is Homage to TRON

In the slideshow Frosty Receptions: Snow Palaces and Ice Hotels Around the World, I wrote that "Ice is perhaps the greenest building material; it is made by nature and at the end of its useful life just melts away." Another virtue of working with ice is that every year you get to do a different design. This year's ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, has a room with a TRON theme.

Designers Ben Rousseau and Ian Douglas-Jones of Extreme Design tell Designboom:

We are both massive TRON fans, so the timing of the release of Disney's new 3d high-tech adventure, TRON: legacy, this month was absolutely perfect. The suite itself takes most of it's influence from a nightclub scene in the film involving one of our favorite music artist daft punk, who wrote the score for the film.

Yesterday, the Hollywood Reporter revealed that Disney was launching a high-end accessory and shoe line inspired by Tron: Legacy.

While every ultra-hyped Disney movie release goes hand-in-hand with an avalanche of merchandise, Tron's is pretty over the top.

The shoe and accessory line, for example, has Disney partnering with designers Jerome C. Rousseau, Hayden-Harnett, Robin Rotenier and TomTom. Their products will be on sale at the "Tron" Pop-Up Shop opening next month in LA before Tron: Legacy's Dec. 17 release date.

The clincher? Canadian-born designer Rousseau designed a pair of five-inch metallic platforms inspired by the female lead, Quorra. The price tag? $795.

And that's not the most expensive item on the list, which include cuff links, PS3 controllers, motorcycle outfits, sunglasses and board shorts. Who would buy any of this?

You Want These Tron Legacy Sneakers

tron-legacy-shoes-video-small.jpgLast night at Comic-Con, Dixon and I attended a party for Tron Legacy that was intended to evoke a futuristic club (and would have succeeded, if not for all the Myspace signage). The best part wasn’t the Daft Punk music or the face-painted models. The best part was the shoes.

Behind glass, Disney showed off much of the Tron merch that will be hitting stores this holiday season, and that wonderment we felt upon seeing the first trailer (we’re not going to touch on the puzzlement we may have felt while watching Young Jeff Bridges plumb the uncanny valley in the second trailer) was nothing compared to the lust these light-up shoes evoked in us. Give some out as free swag, Disney! At least then the San Diego pedi-cabs wouldn’t try to run us over at night.

Tron Legacy Trailer

Disney has finally debuted the teaser trailer for Tron Legacy online. This is one of those drop everything, watch now kind of trailers. As excited as I am for Iron Man 2, I am even more excited for Tron Legacy. We didn't expect this trailer to be online this early, but the viral game from earlier was already solved, and here it is for your viewing pleasure in glorious high definiton at the viral site: program-glitch-esc.net. This is only a teaser and it's our very first look at any real footage from the movie, so don't be let down if you wanted to see more action. The song used in this is a Daft Punk song specifically made for the trailer as well. Enjoy!

Watch the teaser trailer for Joe Kosinski's Tron Legacy:

You can also watch the Tron Legacy teaser in high def on this site: program-glitch-esc.net

Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and is pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years.

Tron Legacy is directed by first-time filmmaker Joseph Kosinski. The screenplay was co-written by Adam Horowitz ("Lost"), Richard Jefferies (Blood Tide, Living Hell), Edward Kitsis ("Lost"), and the director of the original movie, Steven Lisberger. This first got the greenlight last year because this early teaser played well at Comic-Con. Disney is bringing Tron Legacy to theaters in 3D starting on December 17th, 2010.

'Tron Legacy' poster spot on

By Ace Fernandez

"The game has changed."

No kidding.

Behold the poster for "Tron Legacy," one of Disney's most anticipated 2010 releases:

Tronlegacy_525x739

My gut says: I like it. It focuses on the light cycles, which every kid who devoured the original film (such as yours truly) watched over and over and dreamed of somehow playing in real life. This poster -- as with the recent teaser trailer -- makes you feel like that may be possible. And the motion and velocity built into the image -- coming right at us! -- emphasizes the film's 3D bona fides and video-game slickness.

If this film is on your radar, then this poster does the trick in ramping up your eagerness to see the souped-up 2.0 version.

And the tagline -- THE GAME HAS CHANGED -- is simple, effective, evocative. Bam.

Tron 2 Scored By Daft Punk

Author: JT

daftpunk Tron 2 Scored By Daft Punk

Well here’s a sign that someone over at Disney gets it. Tron tells the story of a man trapped inside a computer, and so it uses an electronica score, of the type that was soon to be sheik in the 80s. While the electronica score is no more, they’re resurrecting it for Tron 2.

Upcoming Film Scores reports that Daft Punk has been hired to score the movie. Daft Punk is just about the only well known electronica band left out there and as a bonus, they’re pretty awesome. They even, occasionally, dress like Tron. Here’s a taste of their music. It’s just what Tron needs: more…

Plot Summary:

tron2q423 Tron 2 Plot Revealed!Disney’s been pretty vague when it comes to talking about what their new Tron sequel will be about. But today AICN posted what they claim is the real deal, spoilerific breakdown of what the movie will be about.

Read no further if you fear spoilers.

Short version: It takes place 25 years after the original movie. Flynn has a son named Sean. Flynn disappears. Alan encourages Flynn’s son to go looking for him. Flynn’s son gets brought into the computer world, where he find’s Flynn’s old CLU program has turned evil. Sean must fight CLU, and somewhere in the mix is the old Flynn riding around on a classic light cycle.

For even more specific, spoilery details head over to AICN.
