Derek Zoolander Makes Triumphant Return on SNL

from http://www.movieline.com/

Ben Stiller hosted last night’s episode of SNL, and while he didn’t quite bring the game that Alec Baldwin and Melissa McCarthy did in weeks past, he did bring an old friend: Derek Zoolander. Stiller revived the titular male model from the 2001 comedy during Weekend Update, where Bill Hader’s Stefon claimed him as a date. Hope you’re prepared to handle Derek’s “cold coffee” face on this pleasant Sunday morning.

Several notes:

1) Derek Zoolander is looking an awful lot like Gene Rayburn these days.

2) I still want to see Tower Heist in spite of this somewhat prosaic performance.

3) I think we might be at the end of Stefon’s hot streak on SNL. He’s been a great character and Hader has played him to the hilt, but I need Stefon to die an honorable death before he gets his own, terribly half-baked movie. I do not need to see Stefon Saves His Club Family.

Schweddy Balls Boycott: One Million Moms Angered Over Ben & Jerry's 'SNL' Flavor

From: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/

Schweddy Balls
Maybe they would have preferred Bill Brasky's balls, instead?

The humorless, fun-averse conservative group One Million Moms, an offshoot of the American Family Association, is -- once again -- none too pleased with frozen treat liberals, Ben & Jerry's. The very vanilla organization is calling for a boycott of the ice cream maker's new, buzzy flavor, the "Saturday Night Live" skit-inspired Schweddy Balls.

In a public letter sent to its members, the organization acknowledges the origin of the rum-tinted, malt ball-filled flavor, describing the Alec Baldwin-starring NPR spoof skit in great detail.

He then explains that he sells popcorn balls, cheese balls, rum balls--balls for every taste--and the ball puns proceed for about four minutes. Ben & Jerry's chose to go with fudge-covered rum and malt balls for their flavor. The skit culminates in Baldwin stating that "No one can resist my Schweddy Balls."

Then, they make a point to air out their dairy delight grievances, including another rejection of any sort of gay-themed treat.

In the past, Ben & Jerry's has released controversial ice creams, like a special edition of Chubby Hubby called Hubby Hubby last year which celebrated gay marriage. It seems that offending customers has become an annual tradition for Ben & Jerry's.

The ice cream is being released in a limited batch, which means it will be distributed nationwide but only for three or four months. If it proves popular, another batch might be forthcoming, but we hope not.

Finally, a call to action, asking for vigilance in the face of a full frontal ball assault.

Please send Ben & Jerry's Public Relations Manager, Sean Greenwood, an email letter requesting that no additional Schweddy Balls ice cream be distributed. Also, highly recommend they refrain from producing another batch with this name or any other offensive names or you will no longer be able to purchase their products.

Those at the Huffington Post, however, heartily embraced the Schweddy Balls; read our taste test reviews here.

Ben & Jerry's unveils Schweddy Balls ice cream

By John Curran
Associated Press
from:
http://www.boston.com/

MONTPELIER, Vt.—Ben & Jerry's is unveiling a new flavor, and it doesn't sound too tasty.

"Schweddy Balls" is an homage to an old "Saturday Night Live" skit featuring Alec Baldwin as bakery owner Pete Schweddy, whose unique holiday offerings included something called "Schweddy Balls."

Sean Greenwood, a spokesman for the Vermont ice cream maker, said Thursday that the company isn't worried about offending people with the name. He says one of the company's principles is to do fun things and that it fits in with that, just as it did with previous flavors like Karamel Sutra and Half Baked.

The new flavor is available at scoop shops and supermarkets. It consists of vanilla ice cream, rum, fudge-covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls.

Rumor Mill: Is Ben & Jerry's Planning A "Schweddy Balls" Ice Cream?

From: http://gothamist.com/

june13schweddy.jpg

Today we catch wind of a strange and hilarious potential development from the Ben & Jerry's camp, who may or may not be developing a new "Schweddy Balls"-themed flavor in honor of the enduring SNL skit starring Ana Gasteyer, Molly Shannon, and Alec Baldwin in a career-defining role as Pete "Schweddy Balls" Schweddy.

Gayster casually let this little bomb slip during an interview with New York 1: "It has this crazy, massive popularity that’s kind of had a half life since I left the show. Ben and Jerry's is coming out with a schweddy balls ice cream for Christmas this year.” Whoa! Bowery Boogie says the flavor will arrive sometime in September and run through Christmas, but a Ben & Jerry's rep we spoke to would neither confirm nor deny the move, explaining "we like all of our new flavors to have an element of surprise."

In any event, now is the perfect time to revisit this gem from the past:

Netflix Adds “Saturday Night Live” and Other NBC Shows

By: Samuel Axon
From: http://mashable.com/

Netflix and NBC Universal have struck a deal to load the streaming video site with tons of content from both NBC and its family of cable networks, including all 35 seasons of Saturday Night Live, and new episodes of the sketch comedy show the day after air.

Saturday Night Live just aired its season premiere last night, but we’re not seeing the episode on Netflix. Apparently the deal hasn’t been executed just yet.

The day-after premiere episodes will continue through 2012, but neither Netflix nor NBC specified how long the other content deals will last. The Office, Law & Order: SVU and 30 Rock will continue to appear on Netflix with the addition of new seasons, along with all episodes of Friday Night Lights. As far as cable content goes, Syfy properties Sanctuary, Battlestar Galactica and Destination Truth will be presented in their entirety, plus USA’s Psych, In Plain Sight and Monk.

The press release from Netflix and NBC says some movies from Universal will be added as well, but it didn’t name any specific films.

Netflix lives and dies by the content in its library, and its leaders have made some smart choices in their quest to secure strong shows and films. For example, they struck a deal with Starz to carry that network’s content.

If they had approached studios directly in that case, they would have had to wait years for the films to pass through existing exclusive contracts.

Restricted Trailer For MacGruber!

By Katey Rich:
From: http://www.cinemablend.com/

Will the MacGruber movie be another in a long line of SNL-inspired flops, or will it be that rare Wayne's World to stand out from the pack? Nobody knows yet, and to be honest, the new restricted trailer doesn't answer too many questions. There's a handful of good jokes in there, and Will Forte has the hilarious MacGyver-esque swagger perfected, but it's easy to cut out all the good jokes in a movie and make it into a decent trailer.

But hey, I'm a skeptic. Watch the trailer below (along with new images from the film) or in HD on the MacGruber official site. Then check in and tell me if you also laughed when you learned the meaning of a "double decker." MacGruber comes out April 23.

First Look At Will Forte In The MacGruber Movie!

By Josh Tyler:

The first ever images from MacGruber have arrived! It’s a spin-off of the same-named SNL sketch in which Will Forte stars as a MacGyver clone whose personal life keeps interfering with his attempts to keep himself from blowing up. Every installment of the sketch ended with MacGruber blowing up and while I’d be happy if he blew up every five minutes in the film, I have the feeling they have something more in mind.

The images are, every bit as awesome as you'd hope. MacGruber looks more heavily mulleted than ever and to prevent theft, he's wisely chosen to carry his car stereo with him... everywhere. Check out the first ever shots of Forte as MacGruber below, and for more info hit our MacGruber preview

Pearl Jam Rocks The Tonight Show With “Got Some” From Upcoming Album Backspacer

Last night’s debut of the new Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien turned out to be a HUGE night for Pearl Jam fans - the band debuted a new song from their upcoming album Backspacer called “Got Some”. The single is rumored to be released in July with the album dropping September 22nd.

As an obvious Pearl Jam junkie, it’s easy to understand for me why they were chosen with this honor, even being picked over from other upcoming Tonight Show guests like Green Day and Chickenfoot (the super group featuring Van Halen alum Sammy Hager and Michael Anthony, guitar whiz Joe Satriani and RHCP drummer Chad Smith). Each and every time the band is in front of the camera, a great TV moment occurs.

I’ve already done a post on Pearl Jam and The Late Show with David Letterman (so check that out right here), so let’s rediscover some other of Pearl Jam’s greatest TV moments.

February 4, 1992: Pearl Jam, on the eve of their first European tour, made their first ever television performance on BBC2 TV’s Late Show with “Alive”.

March 16, 1992: Pearl Jam’s famous MTV Unplugged performance is filmed, which didn’t air until May 13. Long sought after by fans the performance is finally released to DVD on March 24, 2009 as part of the special edition of the Ten reissue. The highlights still have to be “Porch” and “Black”.

April 11, 1992: The band makes their first Saturday Night Live performance with electric performances of “Alive” and “Porch”. They even appear in a skit with host Sharon Stone.

September 9, 1992: Pearl Jam does an intense version of “Jeremy” during the MTV Video Music Awards. Supposedly the band wanted to perform The Dead Boys’ “Sonic Reducer” instead of “Jeremy”, hence why it appears that Ed is mumbling some lyrics from “Sonic Reducer”.

September 2, 1993: After touring with Neil Young during 1993, the band returns to the VMA’s with one of the greatest VMA performances ever…”Rockin’ In The Free World” with the man himself.

April 16, 1994: Shortly following Kurt Cobain’s suicide, Pearl Jam performs on Saturday Night Live for the second time. A darker and more intense performance including not the typical two, but three, songs of the as of yet unreleased “Not For You”, “Rearviewmirror” and “Daughter(Hey Hey, My My)”, which is a tribute to Kurt since he referenced the Neil Young tune in his suicide note.

April 15, 2006: After years of not appearing on much TV, I’m talking about the full band here, the guys return for their third SNL appearance. Pearl Jam performs their current single “World Wide Suicide” and debuts “Severed Hand”.

April 25, 2006: I believe this was the correct date for the band’s performance on Later with Jools Holland, which is an ultra-cool music show in the UK with several stages set up so that different performers can keep on playing. The show begins with Pearl Jam doing some of “Why Go” before the other guests join in during their introductions. The band performs “World Wide Suicide”, “Severed Hand” and “Alive”, as well as, a little interview with Ed and Mike.

May 31, 2006: Pearl Jam does an episode of VH1’s Storytellers with the following setlist: “Better Man”, “Unemployable”, “World Wide Suicide”, “Gone”, “Sleight of Hand”, “Army Reserve”, “Insignificance”, “Alive”, “Here’s To The State of Mississippi” and “Life Wasted”.

5 Things You Didn't Know: SNL

You may know all the words to "Lazy Sunday" and do a mean Debby Downer, but did you know these facts?

By Ross Bonander, Entertainment Correspondent

5 Things You Didn't Know: SNL

Between its premiere in October of 1975 and the start of its 34th season in September 2008, Saturday Night Live has racked up over 100 Emmy nominations and has become "one of the most distinctive and significant programs in the history of U.S. television," according to the Museum of Broadcast Communications. Time magazine considers it the "graduate school of American comedy" and it has duly launched the wider careers of dozens of major actors and comedians, a list too long to include here.

After so many years, the show has had its share of un-funny seasons, yet when SNL is good, it's TV's sharpest satire and no one is safe. Among the most recent victims was Hawaii's tourism industry, hilariously skewered in a March 2009 skit with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The skit, which played up a handful of Hawaiian stereotypes, prompted outrage from the Hawaii Tourism Authority, and further solidified SNL's long-held reputation for stirring controversy, whether by lampooning popular culture or eviscerating American politicians.

As it approaches the finale of its current season, we present 5 things you didn't know about SNL.

1- SNL wasn't the first SNL

Before SNL got on the air, Howard Cosell launched his own Saturday-night variety show, Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell on ABC, which featured a cast called the "Prime Time Players." Frustrated that the name they wanted had been taken, SNL began under the title NBC's Saturday Night, but they took a shot at Cosell's show by calling their own cast the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players."

Despite giving Billy Crystal a national profile, Cosell's show lasted only three months. Thus, in 1977, SNL added the word "Live" to their own title, and shortly thereafter dumped "NBC."

Cosell himself would host the finale of SNL's 10th season in 1985.

2- SNL wanted Albert Brooks as a permanent host

The role of the SNL guest host has become an institution that began with George Carlin. Since then, SNL has landed a spectacularly broad range of hosts, and while most have been big names in the entertainment industry, many have been from the sports world (including Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and even O.J. Simpson) and others have been from arenas such as finance (Steve Forbes and Donald Trump), and others still from politics including two sitting NYC mayors (Koch and Giuliani), and perhaps the show's most bizarre host, Ron Nessen, who was at the time White House Press Secretary to sitting President Gerald Ford.

Yet, had SNL had its way, there would have been a permanent weekly host. Initially, that's what they had asked of actor Albert Brooks, who instead turned down the role and suggested the current format of a different host every week.

There are a few more things you didn't know about the comedic TV hit, SNL...

3- Lorne Michaels tried to launch an SNL competitor

Canadian-born SNL creator, Lorne Michaels, worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Company in the 1960s, even starring in his own comedy series, The Hart & Lorne Terrific Hour. He later moved to Los Angeles and worked as a writer for NBC before launching SNL in New York in 1975.

After five years, however, he had enough with SNL and left the show. Most of the writers and all of the regulars followed suit. For the next few years, with a few exceptions (Eddie Murphy, Joe Piscapo and, later, Billy Crystal and Martin Short) the show's regulars were awful and ratings suffered.

Michaels returned to SNL in 1985 (bringing a new group of regulars with him, including Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Lovitz), but before he did, he launched the abysmal comedy variety show The New Show, which tanked after just two months.

4- Muppets creator Jim Henson had an SNL segment

Jim Henson's gang of Muppets dates back to the 1950s (at least in form if not in name), and they received their biggest exposure on Sesame Street in 1969. However, before he launched The Muppet Show in 1976, Henson had a segment on SNL's first season.

Called "The Land of Gorch," these Muppets were in a total of 15 decidedly adult-themed sketches (about drugs, adultery and even species extinction), some of them written by Chevy Chase and Al Franken, and only one of them by Henson himself. Among the show's writers, the job of writing the sketches was extremely unpopular, a fact that contributed to its demise in early 1976.

5- Cold air is pumped into the SNL studio

If you've ever waited outside 30 Rockefeller Center to get tickets to SNL, you know that, especially in the winter months, it can be a long, bitterly cold and drawn-out affair that requires a lot of luck.

If you do get in, SNL recommends you bring a coat, as they keep the studio at a fairly chilly temperature during both rehearsal and taping by pumping in cold air. The reason? If it were nice and cozy inside, audience members, on their feet most of the day enduring the cold weather, would be less likely to laugh -- much less be alert enough to do so -- during taping.

THE BCS SUCKS, IN SONG FORM

This weekend, Saturday Night Live continued its trend of being the best 90-minute show that you can watch in 20 minutes on your DVR, thanks in part to Will Forte’s song making fun of the BCS. Even though every Will Forte song on Weekend Update sounds exactly the same, and even though this devolves into easy George Bush jokes, I still found this mildly enjoyable enough to post. What a ringing endorsement! Ain’t no compliment like an underhanded compliment!

THE 10 BEST SNL DIGITAL SHORTS OF ALL TIME

SATURDAY NIGHT NOT LIVE

THE 10 BEST SNL DIGITAL SHORTS OF ALL TIME

The whole novelty of Saturday Night Live being live was a nice gimmick in the 70's, 80's and 90's, but it's time for the show to come to grips with the fact that the live portion of the show is now its weakest link. I think they should change the name of show to "Saturday Night Not Live Anymore" and start the show after midnight. Then they can incorporate female nudity into the show and videos of animals having sex. Speaking of animals, how has there never been an actual monkey cast member on the show. Monkeys = ratings.

#10 Lettuce - There should be way more foods that come in "head" form. Who wouldn't buy a head of bacon?

#9 Andy's Dad - I think it's time for Jonah Hill to do his first action movie. He could be the world's first awesome fat action hero.

Fey, candidates to visit 'Saturday Night Live'

Lorne Michaels, the executive producer of “Saturday Night Live,” predicts that the presidential and vice presidential candidates will stop by the comedy show before the election. He also said in a phone interview Tuesday that Tina Fey will return to play Gov. Sarah Palin.

“I think sooner or later, everyone will come through,” Michaels said of the candidates. He declined to give dates as to when “Saturday Night Live” viewers might see Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama, as well as their running mates, Sen. Joseph Biden and Gov. Palin.

“In 2000, both Bush and Gore came on,” Michaels noted. As for when this crop of candidates would appear, he said, “I don’t know when. We’re always talking to everyone.”

Feypalin_2 As for Fey coming back to reprise her role as Gov. Palin before the election, Michaels said, “I think that’s likely.”

Even though Fey’s depiction of Palin has helped drive the show to a 50 percent increase in ratings over last year, Michaels confirmed what Fey said in a recent interview with TV Guide – that she’s done playing Palin after the election.

“She’s gone” after the election, said Michaels. “She has a full-time job” as the creator and star of the NBC comedy “30 Rock,” which returns Oct. 30. Michaels added that “SNL” cast member Kristin Wiig would likely play the Alaska governor should the need arise past Nov. 4.

Michaels also told the Tribune exclusively that Ben Affleck would be the host of the show’s Nov. 1 broadcast. David Cook of “American Idol” fame will be the musical guest.

“Saturday Night Live’s” final pre-election broadcast will air Monday, Nov. 3. That "Election Bash" will not be live but will be a mix of new material taped for the program and older political skits from the past year.

There are a total of six “SNL” broadcasts before the end of the election season: Two additional Thursday broadcasts on Oct. 16 and 23, three Saturday broadcasts Oct. 18 and 25 and Nov. 1, and the “Election Bash” Nov. 3. The hosts and musical guests are as follows: Josh Brolin and Adele on Oct. 18, Jon Hamm and Coldplay on Oct. 25 and Affleck and Cook on Nov. 1.

I will have much more from Michaels soon. I'll be posting a long piece on the resurgent “Saturday Night Live” in the next few days.
