Mario Kart In Real Life Is Less Cute, More Brutal

KartReal (250 x 188).jpg

Mario Kart is an oft-lampooned franchise nowadays. Expertly, I might add. But never has anyone broken down the game to its core and looked at how fun it would be if it only included the bare essentials: racing and power-ups. Well, not until Freddie W and his team did in the video you are about to see here.

With some excellent editing, special effects, and design, we get to see the real, gritty side of the typically friendly racer. It is a place where red shells will literally blow you away, and a creepy Asian dude lifts you from the abyss. Oh, and there aren't any hot princesses, which is a bummer. But there aren't any annoying toadstools there, either. So it isn't all bad.

I would love if my local Family Fun Center had a power-up kart course that I could enjoy. But alas, it doesn't. So I'll continue to do what I always do at Family Fun Centers: drink beer, beat up kids, and give dorks wedgies.

I do wish we got to see: A. bananas, B. blue spiked shell, and C. the lighting power-up. But for a video that clocks in at a minute-thirty, I suppose we can't bee too choosy.

The trailer features some brand new footage of the game's gorgeous cars and detailed, realistic tracks.

Check out the Gran Turismo 5 E3 2010 trailer in HD below:

Another trailer was released on Playstation's official blog which is the full-length trailer, also offering some retrospective of the previous titles in the series.

Articulate This! Chainlink 4x4 is frighteningly awesome

Chainlink extreme 4x4 – Click above to watch video

We aren't sure who built this or why – we're not even sure what it's called (we think it's "Chainlink") – but we're quite sure it's brilliant. Perhaps the new champion of wheel travel, the off-roading beast has around seven feet of articulation at each wheel, up and down.

Controlling all that climbing and dipping is a Rube Goldberg gear network: 5.38 gears and centrally-mounted ARB air locker, chain gears at the swingarm pivots, and chains inside the swingarms to work Hummer hubs at each wheel. But just follow the jump to watch it in action and you'll see what we mean. It's spectacular. Hat tip to Mike S!

Subaru WRX Pulls Semi-truck Out of Snow with Ease (Video)

Subaru WRX Pulls Semi-truck Out of Snow with Ease

From: http://www.totalprosports.com/

Subaru's are good cars in a lot of ways. They can be raced at high speeds and have had some success. On a personal use level, they are affordable and quality automobiles. And this crazy guy can probably imitate the sounds they make. None of that really fully allows us to appreciate what they can do. This clip will help in that department.

This video takes place somewhere in Europe. The Subaru Legacy is hooked to the stalled semi, which by the way is monstrously large in terms of how difficult it would be to tow. Not only that, but it is completely stuck in the snow. Now the first thing I would think of is to get a tow truck, maybe even a pick-up truck with some 4x4 action. Its a good thing I wasn't there to waste everyone's time. The driver of this Subaru WRX STI took care of the problem quickly. Not only does this little car have power, but it had great traction as well to be able to drag all that weight and get moving when it was sitting on the slippery snow as well.

A Subaru isn't exactly the first car I would think of buying or driving when it came to racing or especially towing. Hard to argue with the evidence though, and this crazy tow job proves the high quality of the vehicle. On a side note, it's also nice to see people helping each other out instead of flipping each other off.

Fearless Photographer Snaps Drag Car Crash (w/Video)

Fearless Photographer Snaps Drag Car Crash

Let me set the scenario for all you folks watching at home. We all know racing cars is dangerous, but there are things that can be done to prevent injuries. Let's say you're a photographer (or anyone for that matter) and a 250-mph drag car comes hurdling at you, clearly out of control. If you have any respect for life, you probably run or at least start moving away from the wreck that is sure to injure you badly if you are caught in it. Seems logical enough, right? Well don't tell Andy Wilsheer that.

Wilsheer takes his job way more seriously than his life apparently. During a drag race last month at Pomona Raceway in California, Steve Gasparrelli's Ford Mustang spun off right at the start of the race and immediately began crashing towards a row of photographers protected only by a small temporary barrier. Most of the photographers scurried out of the way, fearful for their lives. Andy Wilsheer did not, and while his courage was boneheaded at best and near-fatal at worst, it did allow him to obtain some amazing photos and also the respect of people everywhere for his gutsy performance. I wish this guy had been there when that million dollar car wrecked in Hong Kong, then we might have had some better shots of it.

Now am I saying its good he did this because the photos are that amazing? No, but still you have to respect someone so passionate about their work that they are willing to risk life and limb to accomplish it. But seriously Andy, just get out of the way next time, okay?

Virgin Racing Formula 1 team launches

From: http://www.virgin.com/

The Virgin Racing Formula 1 team was officially launched in London today, where it was confirmed that one of the sport’s four new entrants has teamed up with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin brand to embark on an exciting F1 (ad)venture.

300 guests assembled at the Louise Blouin Foundation in Notting Hill, the London district where it all began for the Virgin brand. The Rick Parfitt Jr band provided the icebreaker before the venue rocked to the electrifying sound of a Formula 1 car courtesy of a collection of up and coming musicians playing electric guitars.

Richard Branson and the Virgin Racing management team of Nick Wirth, John Booth and Alex Tai outlined the vision for their lean, mean racing machine and revealed the team’s dynamic young driver line-up. Alongside Timo Glock were two new additions to the Virgin Racing stable - Brazilian hot shot Lucas di Grassi and GP2’s Portuguese revelation Alvaro Parente.

Virgin Racing also welcomed no fewer than nine new partners to the team.

Virgin Racing had better get used to the lights, cameras and action. A star is now born and the countdown to the 2010 curtain-raiser has begun.

For more information head to Virgin Racing.

Inside Jesse James’ Record-Breaking Hydrogen Racer

jesse_james_lsr_sized1

Motorcycle madman Jesse James has broken the land speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle, and he did it in a car that packs modern technology into a vintage racer more than 40 years old.

The guy behind West Coast Choppers blazed across El Mirage Dry Lake Bed at 199.7 mph in a car he claims he spent “a couple million bucks” building. He’d been toying with the idea of an alt-fuel racer, but rather than start from scratch — as BMW did with the slick H2R racer that previously held the record — he modified a ’60s-era streamliner to run on gaseous hydrogen.

“I think it’s way cooler to take an old hunk of shit that many considered useless and make it haul ass,” James told Wired.com. “It has built-in soul and history. Plus, it’s recycling.”

jesse_james_lsr_02That hunk of shit is a somewhat historic machine called the Dees Milodon Engineering - Davis B streamliner, and it is no stranger to the salt. The car once hit 237 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats using a Chrysler engine, and James says it set a record for a front-wheel-drive vehicle. It hadn’t seen action for awhile, and when James first saw the car it was hanging in a friend’s shop.

“I always loved the way it looked,” James said. “Kinda like an evil flying saucer.”

After getting some design help from renowned land speed racer Mike Cook, the crew at West Coast Choppers lengthened the car 24 inches and brought the frame and suspension up to modern safety specs. James handled all the bodywork himself, then called on engine expert Kurt Urban to help develop the powerplant.

They went a bit nuts, building a 572-cubic-inch twin-turbo Chevrolet engine that produces prodigious power.

“BMW set the record with liquid hydrogen, which is way easier to make a motor run on but it will never be practical for everyday cars,” James told us. “The engine produces 780 horsepower and 900 foot-pounds of torque. That’s some serious power from the world’s most plentiful resource.”

A Liberty airshifted 5-speed transmission and a Winters quick-change differential round out the drivetrain. The hydrogen is stored at 5,000 PSI in three tanks built by Quantum Technologies — the same outfit developing the plug-in electric drivetrain for Fisker Automotive.

“It sounds like an iron lung when it’s working,” James said.

James fired up the engine for the first time at 12:45 a.m. on June 8. He says sounds “like a real race car, just done in a non-ozone-killing way.” (Judge for yourself by watching a video posted here.)

By that point, the only thing left to do was suit up, get in and hold on. James made his record-setting run on Tuesday and taped it for his TV show “Jesse James Is A Dead Man.” He fell just short of his goal of 200 mph, but it was enough to top the 186.52 mph record BMW held. The speed was confirmed by the Southern California Timing Association, a sanctioning body for land speed racing .

So why did a guy known for building customized motorcycles decide to go alt-fuel racing?

“I’m not so blinded by the things I build that I can’t see change is needed,” he said. “I’m in love with anything with wheels and a big engine. I hope my son will be able to love the same things. They’ll just be running on a different kind of gas.”

The episode featuring James’ record run will air Aug. 9.

UPDATE, 12:10 p.m. ET June 19: Roy Creel, president of the Southern California Timing Association, sent this note to correct a point in the original post:

The SCTA (Southern Calif. Timing Association) was neither involved in, nor did we confirm Mr Jame’s “record.” In fact, Mr James did not set any record. What he did accomplish was to exceed an existing record speed previously set by BMW. His private timing event was timed by the same folks that time SCTA events and the course was set up by the same folks who set SCTA courses.
