Lamborghini Announces Hybrid Coming In 2015

by Jerry James Stone, San Francisco, CA

Exotic car maker Lamborghini has announced they will be entering the hybrid fray with their iconic Gallardo.

Company CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Germany's Automobilewoche that the first one is slated for 2015. He says that the Gallardo's electric motor will be used for low demand driving in slow, congested city traffic much like the Toyota Prius. When the Lambo hits higher speeds the 10- or 12-cylinder gas engine will kick in and immediately drop your MPGs back to a single digit.

Recently Lamborghini has cut tailpipe emissions by 18 percent with the latest Gallardo, achieved through conventional refinements in the existing V10 powerplant.

Winkelmann said the company will spend $50.3 million between now and 2015, to reduce emissions in both its vehicles and its production facilities. He also confirmed that they will not be producing an all-electric car like the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing.

And I say, why the heck not? This is clearly a vanity effort on Lamborghini's part. They have a lot more wiggle room design-wise with a starting price of $180,000 for the Gallardo than say Honda.

While this helps the Audi-owned company meet its goal of cutting emissions by 35 percent, I cannot help think it's all just a big pissing contest with Ferrari.

Ferrari's hybrid is also set for a 2015 release.

4 Extreme Soda-Pop Rockets (With Step-By-Step Plans!)

D

If DIY rocketry teaches us anything it's that rockets can come in all shapes and sizes, made from a wide variety of materials. Engineer and pyrotechnician Paul Jarvis prefers to make his rockets from plastic bottles. In his recent book, Soda-Pop Rockets: 20 Sensational Project to Make From Plastic Bottles, Jarvis gives techniques, tips and step-by-step instructions to make rockets—propelled by water, gas and air pressure—out of plastic bottles. Here, excerpted from the book, are four projects to take on at home. Soda-Pop Rockets, published by Chicaco Review Press, will be available on shelves this October.

New Analysis May Pave the Way for Greater Acceptance of Fish Oil Nutrient

Photo: Recommended Daily Dose for Omega-3 May Be on the Way
Fish oil appears to have withstood the test of both time and controlled trials; now some cardiologists say it is time for omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids to join others nutrients for which a daily recommended intake has been established.

A new analysis could lead to heated debate among heart dictors over whether omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids deserves its own recommended daily intake levels.

Fish oil -- a centuries-old pharmacy shelf fixture -- has recently been the subject of much research to determine its heart-protecting properties. Now, some cardiologists say it is time for omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids to join others nutrients for which a daily recommended intake has been established.

Dr. Carl Lavie, medical director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention at the Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute in New Orleans, is one such cardiologist. He says that healthy people should consume at least 500 mg per day of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) plus docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in order to meet their daily needs for the nutrient.

Lavie and his colleagues made the recommendations in a paper released Monday in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Those with known cardiovascular disease, the researchers added, should consume 800 to 1,000 mg per day of the nutrient.

Such recommendations, if widely established, could solidify omega-3's place in the pantheon of nutrients that diet experts recommend.

But other cardiologists were more measured in their assessment and at least one -- the oft-quoted contrarian Dr. Steven Nissen, director of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic -- said Lavie's conclusions are premature.

"I don't find the evidence for widespread usage of omega-3 particularly compelling," Nissen said.

Others, including Dr. Robert Bonow, past president of the American Heart Association and co-director of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute at Northwestern University in Chicago, attempted to temper the enthusiasm by pointing out that while advising patients to increase consumption of fish oil may be "good advice," it should be tempered by adding the caveat that the data are "strongest in those with established heart disease ... with the principal benefit being a reduction in serious rhythm problems.

"The other benefits do appear to be real, but there is less evidence -- and in some cases no evidence -- that these lead to better patient outcomes," Bonow added.

Lavie based his recommendation on a review of findings from four studies that, in total, looked at about 40,000 study participants -- ranging from healthy individuals to those who had experienced a heart attack or other cardiac problem.

Studies May Garner More Acceptance for Fish Oil Supplements

The studies revealed a number of potential advantages to taking in omega-3 fatty acids. One piece of research showed that in men who had recently experienced a heart attack, those who took omega-3-rich fish oil were 29 percent more likely to be alive after two years than their non-fish-oil-eating counterparts.

Even Lavie noted, however, that not all studies have been kind to omega-3s. In his study, he writes that one previous trial showed that patients who have experienced a form of heart-related chest pain known as angina who are treated with fish oil "seem to have a higher risk of [sudden cardiac death] than untreated control subjects." At least one other study has shown the benefits of omega-3 for those who have suffered a heart attack to be questionable.

This has not stopped some heart doctors from using omega-3 supplements in their patients, however. Dr. Melvyn Rubenfire, director of preventive cardiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, says he is currently using EPA + DHA supplements in patients with coronary artery disease because "available evidence supports it."

But Rubenfire added that he would like to see a "trial in the modern era in patients on other evidence-based treatments such as aspirin, [blood pressure] control, statin and non smoking" to confirm an omega-3 benefit on top of standard care.

And then there is the question of whether people who take commercially available supplements will be getting enough of the nutrient to make a difference. Rubenfire warned that the lack of regulation in the supplement industry means "that 1,000 mg of fish oil caplets may contain as little as 300 mg of EPA+DHA."

American Heart Association Already Backs Omega-3

The American Heart Association (AHA) appears to already be on board with omega-3 guidelines. The organization's current recommendation is that people with confirmed coronary heart disease should consume 1,000 mg daily of combined DHA + EPA. For healthy adults, the AHA recommends consuming 500 mg per day, which works out to consuming at least two servings of fatty fish a week.

But while it does promote heart healthy diets for all, the AHA remains wary about mercury contamination in fish and cautions that fish with the highest potential for contamination -- namely shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish -- should be avoided.

DOES MILLA JOVOVICH LIE ABOUT HER AGE? OR WAS SHE JUST JAILBAIT?

InGameNow has an interesting article up in which they point out that Milla Jovovich (whom you may remember as Leilu Multi-Pass from 5th Element), who stars in Perfect Getaway opening tomorrow, claims to have been born in 1975. Which would’ve made her 13 at the time of this guest spot on Married With Children. Which doesn’t seem likely. Or maybe this boner is just a dangerous outlaw. (*two gun fingers pointed at crotch*)

They’ve got a couple other pieces of evidence over there, which mostly consist of pointing out old hot pictures of Milla Jovovich and then speculating whether or not she was underage when she took them. Rawr, sounds like my kind of party. I do my speculating with a speculum.

Brian Henson Teases Fraggle Rock and Dark Crystal

By Dave Gonzales on August 06, 2009

Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets left the reigns of his company in the hands of his kids, Lisa and Brian Henson. The Jim Henson Company has been teasing us with sparse details about a Fraggle Rock movie AND it's been over a year of talk surround a sequel to 1982's puppet fantasy flick The Dark Crystal.

After months of circling these projects on the PR front, avoiding specific details about production, is Brian Henson ready to spill the beans on either of these Muppet movies?

Sort of.

"Fraggle Rock" is "still in very active development. Very active development. That has a very strong script," Henson told MTV, "It'll have a strong musical component...It'll be expanded to an older audience. 'Fraggle Rock' [the TV show] was presented... for a pretty exclusively children's audience. The feature film does expand it to be more accessible to a wider audience."

Is this going to be indie bands writing songs for the Fraggles? Is there some serious premise the script contributes? Will we no longer save our worries for another day?

As for Dark Crystal: "We have a 'Dark Crystal' sequel, called 'The Power of the Dark Crystal.' It has a very strong script."

Ok, a title...I'm less enthusiastic about that. Even if the script is locked down at this point, the title just means we'll have to program another tag into our database, one that could easily be changed any time during production.

Anything of more substance for us, Brian?

"Both of those projects... are very close to going into pre-production. They're both really ready to go. [The studio is] just [in the process of] putting together the final finance pieces and the final distribution pieces."

Very good. Really ready to go. I see the emphasis, I just want some real word! Is The Power of the Dark Crystal akin to Rise of the Skeksis? Are Gobo and Mokey coming to a theater near us or will there be new Fraggles to follow?

What gives?

World's biggest matzo ball unveiled in NYC: 267-pound ball gobbled up by hungry lower East Siders

Noonan for News

Noam Sokolow, of Noah's Ark Deli (left). The world's largest matzo ball was made by chef Anthony Sylvestri of Noah's Ark Deli, (center).

Oy vey! This is a matzo ball to make you kvell.

Weighing 267 pounds and measuring 29.2 inches in diameter, the biggest matzo ball in the world was unveiled Thursday and served up to hungry lower East Siders.

The giant kosher creation was schlepped across the city with a police escort after spending 19.5 hours on a slow boil in a custom-made 100-gallon New Jersey kettle.

It was created to raise awareness and money for a charity basketball game at Madison Square Garden between the New York Knicks and Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv.

Profits from the Oct. 18 game will benefit the Migdal Ohr, an orphanage in northern Israel.

"What's better than this in New York City?" said Noam Sokolow, owner of Noah's Ark Original Deli on Grand St., who helped organize the event.

"Big Apple, big matzo ball, big basketball game."

The massive orb was lifted out of its kettle by two dozen workers with a special soup sling.

They heaved it into a large protective crate for the trip from Teaneck, N.J., to Manhattan in a 24-foot freight truck.

Five men unloaded the ball and walked it up a red carpet to the front of the deli, where it was unveiled in a giant bowl.

"Wow, really cool," said 10-year-old Hillel Levinger, when he set eyes on the ball. "I was able to actually witness a world record."

Chef Anthony Sylvestri said his creation was a "sinker" and was proud to put his name to it.

"It's still whole, it came out great," he said.

"It's not like we do this every day.

"If someone was to beat this record, then I'll beat it again," he added.

A team of cooks cut the ball into pieces and took them to the Good Companions Senior Center on Madison St.

The center provides low-cost kosher lunches six days a week, along with health and wellness programs and recreation facilities.

"It's very good, I love it," said Fidelia Dorival, 79, as she tucked into her record-breaking lunch.

"I'm very proud."

Seymour Kestenbaum, 91, was not so convinced.

"This is not like my mother's matzo balls," he kvetched.

"I love matzo balls, [but] they have to be like my mother's."

IGN: Top 10 Teaser Trailers: The early movie previews that got us rather excited.

by Orlando Parfitt, IGN UK

UK, August 7, 2009 - Teaser trailers often end up being the most exciting thing about a movie. An early preview - done right - can get the heart pumping like no other piece of movie promotion. Indeed some movies - like Cloverfield - can largely trace their success to the canny, intriguing, mouth-watering early glimpse audiences were given of the film.

Great teasers generally fall into two camps; those that offer a glimpse at mind-blowing footage from a highly anticipated movie that revs fans into a frenzy - such as The Phantom Menace or The Lord of the Rings. The other camp is those that use no actual footage at all, instead using a simple visual cue to convey the essence of the movie. When executed well, either approach can be breathtaking - here are some of our favourites.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Every fanboy (and girl) remembers where they were when they first saw the teaser for George Lucas' first Star Wars prequel. The opening tag line 'Every saga has a beginning'; the first glimpse of Ewan McGregor as young Obi Wan; the mad-looking pod race and best of all; Darth Maul flicking the 'on-switch' on his double-sided lightsaber. We remember running around the living room with excitement when we saw it, and this was probably an understated response compared to some.

Jurassic Park

One of several teasers on this list that uses absolutely no footage from the actual film. In 1994 you couldn't escape Jurassic Park, with the movie's logo seemingly plastered over every lunch box and billboard in the western world. Before that however it was this preview that began amping the hype, simply showing footage of how the dinosaur's DNA was extracted from amber. The key was not showing the ground-breaking CGI dinosaurs themselves, allowing audience imaginations to go into overdrive.

WALL•E

Pixar deserve a place on the list for taking the effort to produce scenes specially for the teaser trailers, usually to great effect. Considering how much time, money and love goes into every second of their films, that's no mean feat. WALL•E was a great example of this, with the teaser showing Pixar bigwigs basically boasting about all the good stuff they'd made, and only at the end giving a peak of the lovable robot. The moment he looks longingly to the sky, then delivers his own name in his signature metallic drawl, summed up the charm and character of the film perfectly.

Video: How IMAX Wizards Convert Harry Potter to 3-D

Get a glimpse at the proprietary 2-D-to-3-D conversion software used to transform the opening sequence of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in this video, supplied exclusively to Wired.com by IMAX.

The clip shows the process of creating Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: An IMAX 3D Experience, the special version of the boy wizard movie that features approximately 12 minutes of 3-D footage.

“The first step is masking out objects in the scene so that we can turn those objects 3-D,” says IMAX’s Eric Robinson as he shows off the software. “The next step is, re-create the scene in 3-D so that we can generate depth information from that. Our proprietary render system generates a new image, which is offset from the original.”

The promo video also shows supposed fans gushing about how the IMAX version is a “completely different experience” from the 2-D version shown in regular theaters, which we’ll have to take on faith.

Half-Blood Prince, a bona fide blockbuster that has raked in more than $755 million worldwide since its July 15 release, is the sixth film based on British author J. K. Rowling’s unbelievably successful Harry Potter novels. It has been critically acclaimed as one of the best of the lot.

Chinese bride gets married in 1.4 mile-long wedding dress

A Chinese bride has made a bid for the record books when she turned up for her wedding wearing a 1.4 mile-long gown.

The bride and groom smiling at a wedding held in Jilin, China: Chinese bride gets married in 1.4 mile-long wedding dress
Zhao Peng, the groom, and his family spent over two months stitching together the trail of the dress to break the former Guinness World Record for the longest wedding dress which is 1,579 meters long displayed in Bucharest, Romania earlier this year Photo: BARCROFT

More than 200 guests took over three hours to unroll Lin Rong's wedding train and pin on 9,999 red silk roses for her wedding, Xinhua news agency said.

Groom Zhao Peng said he wanted to challenge the current world record of 1,579 metres.

"Both the length of the dress and the number of silk roses pinned on the wedding dress can make history. But it doesn't matter whether I can successfully register it on Guinness," the 28-year-old railway worker from northeast Jilin province was quoted as saying.

Zhao said he had sent an application to Guinness World Records and would also send a video of his wedding with his 25-year-old school teacher.

"I do not want a cliche wedding parade or banquet," the groom said, "nor can I afford the extravagance of a hot balloon wedding."

But even so, his family was initially not too impressed at the far from frugal 40,000-yuan (nearly $6,000) price tag.

"It is a waste of money in my opinion," his mother said. "Though I understand that he wants to show his love on the big day."

Lin Rong, the bride, laughed and cried at the romantic gesture.

Zhao said he was actually inspired by the world's record of the longest wedding dress made in Romania in April when he planned his wedding.

He bought the materials and asked his relatives for help in making the wedding dress by hand, which has taken three months to finish.

'Machete" Cast Confirmed - Robert Rodriguez + De Niro? Color Me Excited!

Machete Dream Cast Confirmed Rodriguez Giving Stallone a Run for his Money
quick takeRobert De Niro, Jessica Alba, and Michelle Rodriguez are just a few names signed on for the movie

A few weeks back we reported on a number of tantalizing casting rumours for Ethan Maniquis and Robert Rodriguez's upcoming Machete feature film (based on the Grindhouse trailer starring Danny Trejo). To be honest, I didn't really believe many of them, especially since they seemed to come from a number of different sources all at once. But hey, every now and then, something you read on the internet turns out to be true!In this case, Variety has indirectly confirmed the line-up for the film, which sounds pretty spectacular to me (in a no-holds-barred action b-movie kind of way). In the midst of a piece on Overnight Productions, they casually drop word that Machete has started shooting this week, and that "Robert De Niro ,Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey play supporting roles".Okay, so no mention of Jonah Hill, but DeNiro, Rodriguez and Seagal are all in, plus La Lohan, Cheech, and... Don Johnson?!! I think Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables might have some competition when it comes to bad ass/old school/weirdo casting. I have no idea what to expect from this movie, and while it probably will be another quick-and-dirty Rodriguez production, I think there's plenty of reason to be excited. What do you think, is Machete going to rule, or is it going to come off nothing more than a gimmick?

Nathan's Famous on Coney Island could be saved by landmark status

Siegel for News

Nathan's Famous at Surf and Stillwell Aves. in Coney Island has been an unofficial landmark for decades, and its supporters want it granted official status so it isn't replaced by high-rise.

It's already a landmark for hot-dog lovers around the world - and now they want to make it official.

Advocates are pushing the city to landmark the building at Surf and Stillwell Aves., where Nathan's Famous has been dishing out dogs since 1916, to prevent it from being demolished as Coney Island undergoes sweeping redevelopment.

Under a zoning plan passed by the City Council last week, a hotel tower of up to 20 stories could be built at the corner currently occupied by Nathan's. It's one of four sites along Surf Ave. where hotels will be allowed.

Coney Island USA founder Dick Zigun said landmark status is necessary to stop Nathan's from going the way of such mainstays as Astroland, which closed last year.

"To not have Nathan's would be insane," he said. "Even when you build new rides and businesses and hotels ... the appeal [Coney Island] is going to have is the history.

"You don't want the new Coney Island to be indistinguishable from a suburbanized, homogenized, standardized amusement park off the New Jersey Turnpike," Zigun said. "You want it to be special."

Landmarks Preservation Commission spokeswoman Lisi de Bourbon said officials are still weighing the historical and architectural significance of the building.

Two other historic Coney buildings, the Shore Theater and the Coney Island USA building - home to the original Childs Restaurant - have been deemed eligible for landmarking, de Bourbon said.

Landmark status has already saved other Coney icons like the Cyclone and the WonderWheel from the wrecking ball.

Nathan's Famous CEO Eric Gatoff said the company has no position on the landmark proposal, but insisted the hot-dog emporium isn't going anywhere. He noted Nathan's - which doesn't own the building - has 18 years left on its lease.

"We expect to be in that building forever," Gatoff said. "Our expectation is there will always be a Nathan's on the corner of Surf and Stillwell."

The Handwerker family, which founded the original Nathan's and still owns the building, could not be reached for comment.

More than 125 people have signed an online petition launched three days ago to push for the landmarking - and most frankfurter fans were all for it.

"It should be a landmark already," said Bill Funk, 69, an upper West Side accountant who has visited the stand once a week all summer for the past 50 years. "There deserves to be change here. There should be better development, but this should stay."

Angelina Jolie Breastfeeding Statue Coming to Oklahoma City

AngelinaSTatue.jpgJust what Angelina Jolie has likely always wanted--a nude sculpture of herself breastfeeding two babies displayed in public.

Artist Daniel Edwards--whose previous works include statues of Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug, Oprah Winfrey and her late dogs, and a hot pink rubber bust of Octomom Nadya Suleman--has created a statue called Landmark for Breastfeeding of Jolie nursing hers and Pitt's twin babies.

Edwards, who says the sculpture is a "celebration of family and home" will display his work in an Oklahoma City exhibit space next month before the statue makes its way to London for another show.

Every Oklahoma City teenage boy currently begs their cool art teacher for an educational field trip.

14,641 Gatorade Bottles Use To Create Michael Jordan Mosaic

Michael Jordan Mosaic Made Of Gatorade Bottles

Total Pro Sports - They say a picture can tell a thousand words, but when it is a giant image of Michael Jordan constructed from 14,641 Gatorade bottles, it seems to say so much more. Just don't ask Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zombrano what he thinks about Gatorade.

Gatorade teamed up with American advertising agency TBWA\Chiat\Day to create a tribute to "His Airness" in honor of his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The design was constructed by taking a classic image of Jordan soaring through the air and recreating it using Gatorade Limited Edition Jordan Series bottles and 200 light boxes (just don't expect these bottles to sell on eBay for $25,000).

After planning the original design and staging a practice run, the crew took to the streets for the real deal. It began at 6:17 am on the South Side of Chicago and sixteen hours later it was complete. A giant mosaic lay across a an outdoor basketball court, with fans of the former Bulls' star waiting to see it light up. Unfortunately there was no inflatable penis in the background. I guess you can't have it all.
