Creativity, designs and art work involve use of the computer in some or the other form. In this scenario there still exists a group of artists who love handcrafting objects. The sheer joy of seeing something take shape right before ones eyes is immeasurable. One such artist is Matheson Harris. He describes himself as a father, husband, surgeon and photographer with no mention of artist. But if you happen to see his cardboard Star Wars collection you would take him to be an excellent artist.

The cardboard collection of Star Wars was created by Harris a couple of months ago. His Star Wars fleet consists of the Millennium Falcon, AT-AT, the Star Destroyer and the Tie Fighter. Amazingly handcrafted each piece bears a striking resemblance to the original ones that you would have seen in the movies.



When the computer had not invaded every home one could see more examples of such creativity flowing in from all corners. Children and grown ups both found out varied ways to occupy themselves and in this process exercised their grey cells to a great extent. Day-to-day objects were transformed and given a new identity. This exercise led to the creation of fantastic objects and ideas. Now with every other person glued to the television or the computer handcrafted objects are becoming a rarity. Forget making use of small insignificant objects.



The Star Wars fleet created by Harris is an amazing example of handwork. If you take a look at them you will realize that the entire project is free of any fancy object. The main article used in the making of these starships is cardboard, a very inexpensive and easy to find product. Apart from this the list includes hot glue, sharpie, a couple of sucker sticks, and ping pong balls. Put all these items together and you end up getting an entire range of the Star Wars armada.

What is extraordinary about this project is not only the simplicity it bears with it but the fact that one can see a great degree of excellence in this simplicity. Every little bit is well crafted. Look at the measurement of every piece, its proportion with relation to the others and the finesse with which the whole thing has been put together. All that one can see here is excellence in every area.

Projects involving fancy objects do catch one’s attention. Designs and objects created using the computer have a very different look but the ones created by hand are unique in themselves. And to top it all if it is made of very simple objects the value increases by leaps and bounds.

A Paper Crafted Audi & How It Was Made

Using only paper as his materials, graphic designer Taras Lesko was recently commissioned by Audi to create a model version of their snappy new A7 automobile. Putting his print, cut and paste skills to work, Lesko came up with a version of the car that looks almost as if it could really drive. Amazing Vividly Newspaper Sculptures by Nick Georgiou

Look, the printed word is live! Don’t doubt what you have seen here. They are the works of Nick Georgiou, a creative artist from Queens, NY. All of his works are vividly sculpted by newspapers and books that collected by himself or others arround. Georgiou always considers himself as a storyteller. He enjoys changing printed word into another form and thinks it is a way of breathing new life into books or newspapers. His works have been exhibited Black Rat Press, Andipa Modern galleries in London, the recent solo exhibition in Tucson as well as several shows in the New York area. The times when paper was considered to be the primary medium for artistic expression is long gone. Many writers and designers use digital media to improvise and develop their ideas. However, there is something particuliar in this “physical” canvas — something that keeps us getting back to paper when we want to brainstorm ideas in a notebook, doodle around in a sketchbook, collect inspiration in a scrapbook or just draw some sketches for the next project.

In fact, paper is even more powerful than that. It is a very flexible medium. You can use it paper only for giving your ideas and feelings forms, but also as an expressive medium for creative artworks formed out of paper. You can create a sharp-edged paper plane or ship, but also form twisted curves of nature or complicated geometrical shapes. In this weekend’s post we present a showcase of paper art; you wil find many beautiful carved, folded, cut out paper objects and realistic 3D paper sculptures, all using paper, cardboxes or even books as materials. We all know the image of the poor, starving artist, but the reality is, it can be costly to create art. Whether for supplies, workspace or even classes, most artists are constantly throwing money

into their passion—but there are a select few who do it literally. These creative minds take cold, hard cash and turn it into art. So read on for 10 masterpieces made of money.

“Money Dress” by Dave Cole

Made of 1,000 unused single dollar bills, which Cole cut into raw materials, this 66" x 30" x 14" dress was displayed in the 2007 Radical Lace & Subversive Knitting exhibit at New York City’s Museum of Arts and Design, which was devoted to “using fiber in unexpected and unorthodox ways.” Photo courtesy of Clayton Parker via Flickr.com.

“Money Boat” by Qinyi “Raymond” Yu

This 3’-long x 4’-tall boat—currently on display at Yu’s Mandarin Island Chinese Restaurant in Mission Hill, California—showcases traditional Chinese paper art. According to Bob Nienhuis’ website dedicated to Traditional Chinese Paper Arts, Yu used over 20,000 modular units to create the structure, which took approximately six months to complete. “Absolute Power” by Justine Smith

The London-based artist built this 7.5" x 5" x 1.5" handgun sculpture out of U.S. dollar bills and plastic in 2005. “Obama vs. McCain” by Theodore Stanke

Brooklyn-based Stanke created this mosaic in the month leading up to 2008 presidential election. Created from adhesives and chopped-up American coins—Obama from pennies and nickels, McCain from quarters, dimes and dollars—the mosaic was intended to depict the distribution of wealth backing each candidate. “One Dollar Koi” by Won Park

“Carpenter’s Tools” by Stacey Lee Webber

These three tools, constructed out of pre-1992 copper pennies, are part of Webber’s “The Craftsmen Series.” The artist hand-cut the pennies and soldered them together to create hollow, 3-D replicas of existing hand tools. You have an old used book and you plan to drop it in garbage? Well, after reading this post you might change your mind about that and try to make some cool paper-cut sculptures from its papers . I always liked those books for kids with different sculptures and objects which would fold up when you open the book. Even when I grew up I was always fascinated with such kind of books.

Su Blackwell realized that she actually could create some artworks in a similar way. Those are not the books which are made only for kids and those paper sculptures definitely do not fold up when you open them, but they are great examples that you can create a true artwork even from old used book.
