World's 20 Biggest Yachts

World's 20 Biggest Yachts

Some have missiles; some have swimming pools; some have 90-person staffs—all of these boats are enormous vessels of power, expense, and luxury.

The newest yacht in Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's fleet is the largest private yacht now in existence. It boasts a missile-detection system, a luxury spa, two helipads, a swimming pool, and a miniature submarine. It reportedly cost more than $400 million. To keep out the prying eyes of the paparazzi, the yacht has an electronic "shield" that can detect light sensors in digital cameras and make them unable to take photos.

Undersea Yacht Submerges When Your Sunburn Starts Hurting

Undersea Yacht Submerges When Your Sunburn Starts Hurting

It's like something from a James Bond film. You can just see Daniel Craig jumping effortlessly from the land-dock onto the deck of a yacht gliding away slowly, and as he hurries into the cabin the yacht submerges, bubbles rising.

While firmly in the concept stage, the undersea yacht (or U-010 to give it its pretend-real model number) was dreamed up by the type of people who probably think the DUKW is the perfect way to get around a city.

Should the U-010 actually be made, its designers would make it 66.5m long, and styled just like any normal yacht—except for its unique ability to run on diesel and then electric propulsion. I can't help but want one, after seeing the photos below. [Seatec via Born Rich]

Unusual Luxury Yacht

Posted by panta
From: http://www.timeidol.com/

Yacht is a high end recreational boat. The term designates two rather different classes of watercraft, sailing and power boats. Yachts are different from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose, and it was not until the rise of the steamboat and other types of powerboat that sailing vessels in general came to be perceived as luxury, or recreational vessels. Later the term came to encompass motor boats for primarily private pleasure purposes as well.

Hermes design luxury £90m yacht... but where's the back half?

By Claire Bates

Hermes, best known for it's £3,000 Birkin handbags and silk scarves, is branching out into another luxury line... revolutionary yachts.

The stylish French company has teamed up with the Monaco-based ship-builder Wally to create the 'WHY 58x38,' a craft that will cost around £90million to build.

Naval architect Mauro Sculii said: 'The advantage of travelling on the WHY boat is that you take your own space with you, your house, your island so you are not in a hurry to arrive, you just have the pleasure of travelling and being on board. That's the novelty. Usually a boat is just a means of transport.'

No man is an island... but this strangely-proportioned luxury yacht will let the owners take their own space with them on their travels

From the front the Wally-Hermes Yacht or WHY, looks like a traditional vessel

The two companies unveiled a real-size model of the 38-metre (125ft) wide vessel late last month in Ancona, Italy.

Unusually the width of the yacht is almost two thirds of its 190ft length. Instead of a traditional tapered stern, the WHY has a sheared off appearance, with a 30metre 'beach' running along the back. This gives access to a naturally-lit spa, that includes a traditional Turkish Hammam.

Luca Bassini, founder of design company Wally said: 'I think the best part of this boat is the stern. It's not like the usual stern of a boat, it's more like the real beach of an island; a beach which is protected from the wind and the waves, where you can really relax.'

The naval architect Mauro Sculii said the strange dimensions gave a great stability to the boat.

The boat, which is built on three decks, also features a 25metre swimming pool on the bow that hug the contours of the helipad. Inside 'adaptable living spaces' are organised around a salon that contains a cinema, a music room, a library and a dining room that opens on to the sea.

The lucky owner has their own 200-square-metre suite that covers the entire third floor and has sweeping views of the sea from its private terrace.

Up to 12 guests can stay in the five sumptuous suites on the second floor and their every wish would be carried out by a 20-strong crew.

The yacht will cruise at 12knots with a maximum speed of 14knots. Impressively the makers claim it could make four Atlantic crossings without any major maintenance.

Mr Sculii said the yacht would rely on existing, if avant-garde, technologies.

'We wanted this project to stay realistic from the beginning. Something concrete and thus possible to built. It wasn't supposed to be a dream or a pure concept; it was supposed to be real.'

The width of the yacht is almost two thirds of its 190ft length

Any eco-conscious buyer can be reassured that the ship has been designed with three large sky lights and 300 square metres of windows to give a maximum amount of natural light. It will also be fitted with an ultra-low consumption LED lighting system.

Solar panels covering the roof and sides of the vessel will help save at least 200 tons of diesel fuel a year, Hermes said.

The yacht also comes equipped with waste management systems made to handle both organic and inorganic waste.

Gabriele Pezzini, Design Director of Hermes said: 'The designers wanted to totally rethink the relationship between man and sea.'

It will be the first yacht for Hermes who have previously helped design a luxury helicopter and a collection of smart cars.

Russian Billionaire Installs Anti-Photo Shield on Giant Yacht

pelorus

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has a rather curious new addition built in to his latest oversized yacht. The 557-foot boat Eclipse, the price tag of which has almost doubled since original plans were drawn to almost $1.2 billion, set sail this week with a slew of show-off features, from two helipads, two swimming pools and six-foot movie screens in all guest cabins, to a mini-submarine and missile-proof windows to combat piracy.

It might not seem like somebody with such ostentatious tastes would crave privacy, but along with these expensive toys, Ambramovich has installed an anti-paparazzi “shield”. Lasers sweep the surroundings and when they detect a CCD, they fire a bolt of light right at the camera to obliterate any photograph. According to the Times, these don’t run all the time, so friends and guests should still be able to grab snaps. Instead, they will be activated when guards spot the scourge of professional photography, paparazzi, loitering nearby.

We dig it, although the British courts might not be so pleased. UK photo magazine Amateur Photographer asked a London lawyer about the legalities of destroying photos from afar. Here’s what he said: “intermeddling with goods belonging to someone else, or altering their condition, is a trespass to goods and will entitle the photographer to claim compensation without having to prove loss.”

Any sentence containing the word “intermeddling” is of course wonderful. The lawyer spoils it somewhat by (inevitably) mentioning James Bond and mixing up lasers with laser guns: “I would also be worried that lasers cause collateral damage, both to the camera and/or the claimant’s health.”

Who Said a Yacht has to Look Like a boat?

It's hot and summer and what better place to relax than on a yacht - especially one with a striking design. Here is some ‘inspiration' for what you might buy.

Oculus

The Olucus is a very futuristic looking yacht from Schöpfer Yachts. Its 250-foot, can accommodate 12 guests and can travel at speeds up to 25 knots. It got a double-height dining room, an elevator and a special area for ‘the owner' + a lot more.

Infinitas

If that design isn't striking enough, then can you always opt for the bigger and more spacious designed Infinitas. It's 300-foot with a massive recreational pool area in the middle of the ship. It accommodates 12 guests, and pretty much got everything else you might need.

Including a living room on the main deck, a dining room on the other side of the pool area. A sky bridge, kitchen, storage, helicopter platform and a third deck for the owner.

Price? No idea. So far it is only a concept.
