Christ in Rio - That's one big statue

Christ the Redeemer (Portuguese: Cristo Redentor) is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; considered the second largest Art Deco statue in the world. It is 39.6 metres (130 ft) tall, including its 9.5 metres (31 ft) pedestal, and 30 metres (98 ft) wide. It weighs 635 tonnes (625 long,700 short tons), and is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. A symbol of Christianity, the statue has become an icon of Rio and Brazil. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, and was constructed between 1922 and 1931.

Corcovado from the airplane
As we were coming in to land at Santos Dumont airport in Rio de Janeiro, we flew by Corcovado which is dominated by the famous statue of Christ overlooking the city. I had a good view of it from my window although the sun angle was not at its best to take a photograph. I took it anyway, and with some of the fancy software available today I was able to make some adjustments and turn it into a semi-acceptable shot. Carnival 2011 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Carnival Season for 2011 is nearing its end. All over the world, celebrations are held as a final party before the fasting of Lent, as a way to usher out the winter and welcome spring. Across Europe and the Americas, parades and festivals have been taking place for nearly a month, culminating in the largest, most famous party of all: the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The festivities in Rio continue until tomorrow, March 8th. Gathered below are images from the past several weeks of carnivals around the globe.

Landslides in Brazil

Last week, a series of flash floods and mudslides struck the Serrana mountain region near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, destroying buildings roads and more. Nearly 14,000 people are now homeless, 759 are reported to have been killed and another 400 remain missing in this, Brazil's worst-ever natural disaster. As soldiers make their way to remote towns with aid and transportation, Brazil's government has said it would accelerate efforts to build up a nationwide disaster-prevention and early-warning system. Collected here are photos from the mountainous regions near Rio that were so hard-hit by these landslides. Rio's drug war (PICS)

boston.com — After recent efforts by officials to pacify Rio's drug and gang-related violence ahead of the upcoming the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics Games, drug gangs struck out last week - attacking police stations and staging mass robberies. After days of preparation, Brazilian security forces launched a raid in the Complexo de Alemão, where between 500 and 600 drug traffickers were holed up. At least 42 people were killed in the violence last week, with security forces taking control of many neighborhoods.

Museum of Image and Sound to Stand as Rio de Janeiro's Next Beachside Attraction

If you're gonna hang out on the beaches of Rio, you wanna look your best, because everyone there is basically a model. TheMuseum of Image and Sound, designed by Diller Scofidio+Renfro looks like it just rolled out of bed.

Luckily, this is a building and not a person (in case you didn't notice). As such, the frumpy, wrinkled, bed-headed look is pretty awesome, even if it seems a bit out of place next to slightly less modern apartment buildings. Dezeen says the Museum of Image and Sound is expected to have seven levels more or less, with space for galleries, conference rooms, auditorium and food+drink. Oh yeah, there will also be an outdoor movie theater on the ROOF. Yes.
