Nicolas Cage swears he had a magic cat who once spoke to him. No, it was the mushrooms that were magic. On the 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS), Cage proffered quite the anecdote when David Letterman innocently asked whether Cage drank beer in high school.

"No, not beer, but I do remember having a bag of mushrooms in my refrigerator," Cage answered. "My cat used to sneak into the refrigerator and he would steal the mushrooms ... He ate them voraciously, he just loved them. It was like catnip to him."

So Cage took some too. "I remember lying in my bed for hours, and Louis [the cat] was on the desk across from the bed for hours -- staring at each other ... And I had no doubt that he was my brother."

Apparently, Kiefer Sutherland is a betting man. I know this because he appeared on the David Letterman show last night wearing a dress. And when Letterman asked him what the hell he was doing/thinking/wearing, Sutherland pointed out that he was so confident that the Patriots would defeat the Ravens that he told one of his friends he'd wear a dress on Letterman if they lost.

Well, obviously, they lost. Which means that instead of talking about the upcoming season of 24, the entire interview was Dave making fun of Kiefer while Kiefer apologized to friends and family. Hysterical stuff, really, especially when he takes a potshot at Jay Leno with an "out of the closet" joke. Enjoy.

Details of Letterman Blackmail Plot Revealed

New details have emerged about the alleged $2 million extortion plot against David Letterman.

In a press conference held by Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau Friday morning, prosecutors identified the suspect in the plot as CBS News producer Robert "Joe" Halderman and outlined the case against him but declined to comment on his possible motives.

Morgenthau said that Halderman, a 48 Hours producer, had been charged with attempted grand larceny between the period of Sept. 9 and Sept. 30.

The D.A. said that Halderman waited outside Letterman's Manhattan apartment Sept. 9 at 6 a.m. to give him a package and say that he needed a "large chunk of money." He was hoping to sell a "screenplay treatment" and told Letterman that his life was about to collapse around him.

The one-page treatment mentioned "your beautiful loving son" and said Letterman's "world was about to collapse around him." He also referred to "ruined reputation and severe damage to his professional and family lives."

Halderman allegedly said he should contact Letterman by 8 a.m. to further discuss the matter. Letterman immediately called his lawyer. Halderman and the lawyer met at the Essex House hotel on Sept. 15, at which point Halderman allegedly attempted to extort $2 million from Letterman, 62, in exchange for keeping quiet about sexual activity between the Late Show host and female employees of his program.

One of the women at the center of the case is Stephanie Birkitt, Letterman's former assistant, according to the search warrant obtained by FOX 5 New York. The warrant says Birkitt was Halderman's girlfriend.

On Late Show Thursday night, Letterman admitted to having "had sex with women who work with me on this show" and said that he had testified against his alleged extortionist before a grand jury earlier that day.

The warrant says that the package Halderman sent Letterman – who married longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko in March – contained copies of parts of a diary and correspondence belonging to Birkitt.

An arraignment is scheduled for Friday at 2:15 p.m.

On October 1, 1993, [comedian Bill] Hicks was scheduled to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman for the twelfth time, but his entire performance was removed from the broadcast -- the only occasion, up to that point, in which a comedian's entire routine had been cut after taping. Both the show's producers and CBS denied responsibility. Hicks expressed his feelings of betrayal in a hand-written, 39-page letter to John Lahr of The New Yorker. Although Letterman later expressed regret at the way Hicks had been handled, he never appeared on the show again. The full account of this incident was featured in a New Yorker profile by Lahr. This profile was later published as a chapter in John Lahr's book, Light Fantastic.

(The Wikipedia entry is likely wrong on two minor counts. In the clip below Hicks himself says the taping was on Oct. 9. And the performance came barely a month after the Aug. 30, 1993, premiere of “The Late Show” on CBS, so this was almost certainly not his 12th appearance on Letterman's CBS show; it's more likely that Hicks made 11 prior appearances on NBC's "Late Night With David Letterman.")

Less than five months before the "Late Show" performance Hicks was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Less than five months after the performance he was dead.

Somewhere between the appearance and Hicks' demise, he spoke to an Austin cable access show about his deletion from "The Late Show":
