Radiohead Reloads for Post-'King of Limbs' Blitz

Band storms New York with shows, TV gigs in advance of 2012 tour. Plus: New Atoms for Peace LP?

"This is a nice little hit," singer Thom Yorke says in a breezy voice the day before Radiohead's September 28th show at New York's Roseland Ballroom. He is sitting in a hotel lobby, drinking tea and talking cheerfully about his band's current promo blitz on behalf of its latest album, the very-electronic enigma The King of Limbs. When the record came out as a download in February, Radiohead – an independent act since it finished its EMI deal with 2003's Hail to the Thief – played no gigs and did no interviews.

"It was nice not to do any of it," Yorke says. "But after a while, we thought, 'Hold on, it might be nice to do something.' And now that we've figured out how to play it live" – referring to the album's lush tangle of samples, drum loops and glassy vocal reveries – "that creates an energy that we want to pursue. You want to get it out there."

Radiohead's New York trip has included TV appearances on Saturday Night Live, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and a special one-hour edition of The Colbert Report, during which the usually limelight-shy Yorke gamely fired quips back at the host. At Roseland on the 28th and 29th, Radiohead, who have not toured North America since 2008, gave a spectacular preview of their new six-piece lineup – with second drummer Clive Deamer of the British group Portishead – and the major roadwork they are planning for 2012. Yorke, bassist Colin Greenwood, drummer Phil Selway and guitarists Ed O'Brien and Jonny Greenwood performed seven of the eight songs on The King of Limbs, invigorating the laptop-built ambience of "Bloom" and "Morning Mr. Magpie" with live-band dynamics and Selway's polyrhythmic bond with Deamer.

The Roseland shows included an unreleased song, "Daily Mail," Yorke's scathing address to ex-British prime minister Tony Blair, the King of Limbs outtake "Supercollider" and a new arrangement with furious double drumming on "Myxomatosis," from Hail to the Thief. Radiohead also resurrected two oldies: "Subterranean Homesick Alien," from 1997's OK Computer and, on the 29th, a bit of the fans' favorite "True Love Waits" during the intro to "Everything in Its Right Place," from 2000's Kid A. The previous night, in the same spot, Yorke paid tribute to the recently split R.E.M. and their singer Michael Stipe, a close friend, singing a chorus from their 1987 hit "The One I Love."

"It was the same thing with Kid A – the studio was this process, then you bring it to life," Yorke says of the delay in bringing The King of Limbs to the stage. "In 'Bloom,' when Clive goes from the electro pads to the live kit, and my guitar shoots up an octave, I'm like, 'Wow!' When we came up with that, it was like, 'OK, we got it.'"

"The whole thing is a morass of syncopations and layers," says Deamer, who started playing with Selway last winter, working out parts, before rehearsing with the whole group. "But every time we play, it grows. Something slightly different can happen."

Radiohead could squeeze in only three concerts this year – the Roseland dates and a surprise set in June at Britain's Glastonbury Festival – because Deamer is also on the road with Portishead. "He wasn't available," says Chris Hufford, one of Radiohead's managers, "and it's why we couldn't go out on tour until next year."
"It will be sort of on and off, with big gaps," Yorke says of the probable schedule, then grins reassuringly. "But not that big."

In the meantime, Radiohead have released another new album. TKOL RMX 1234567 is a two-CD set of radical reconstructions of the tracks on The King of Limbs by DJs and producers such as Modeselektor, Altrice and SBTRKT. "It was kind of my baby," Yorke says, noting that Blawan's remix of "Bloom" "has just a little bit of us in there. But I love that."

Yorke, who turned 43 on October 7th, is determined to finish his new Atoms for Peace album by the end of the year. It is likely to feature recordings from the sessions Yorke did in 2010 with his touring band of that name, whose members include Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich and bassist Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The album has "a lot of solo stuff as well," Yorke adds. But, he confesses, "It's not good enough yet." He and Godrich "were excited about it for so long, then we kind of lost our way. So we're taking some steps back."

"The genesis was more like The Eraser – Thom and I in the studio," Godrich says, referring to Yorke's 2006 solo album. "The idea was to generate the music, then record the band. We did that. Some of it worked. We also went back to some of the electronic stuff. It's still in flux. We're waiting for the lightning bolt to strike."
Radiohead are returning to the studio as well. They will work on new material at their recording space in Oxford, England, in December and January. "We can get things together quite rapidly at the moment," Yorke says brightly. He mentions one song, "Come to Your Senses." "We have this version of it. It's a five-minute rehearsal, but it has the essence of what we need.

"There are a few of those," he adds. "It would be fun to have them ready when we go to play next year. I don't know how we would release them." Yorke smiles hopefully. "It would be nice to make it all part of the flow and just enjoy it – not think about it too much."

Roger Waters ‘The Wall’ Tour Coming to American Baseball Stadiums

The Wall, for the most part, has always been an indoor show. However, for the past year Waters and his crew have been hashing out all the details and perfecting the concert to transfer over to an outdoor show, focusing specifically on American baseball stadiums.

Roger Waters The Wall Tour Coming to American Baseball Stadiums
Roger Waters Live in Boston

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Roger Waters admits there were some big venues he didn’t get the chance to play last time around. But with The Wall tour returning to America in 2012, Waters has bigger and better plans in mind.

“We want to base the tour around Saturday nights in baseball stadiums. As we speak, I’m at my office working on an outdoor version of the show.”

The best part about it? Fenway Park is hot on his radar!

“We’re going to be projecting over 140 yards. So now it’s going to be 1,500 pixels wide. We’ve done light tests and Fenway Park and Wrigley Field and Yankee Stadium just to see what the ambient light is like. And it’s fine. It works. We’ve taken part of the Wall and the projectors into those three places.”

When the 2012 tour ends next summer, Waters would have been on the road for nearly 20 years, and has expressed some concern about his future.

“They’re trying to get me back to Europe next year. But I think I’ll be completely cooked by the end of July next year. I’m not sure I want to go out and do the greatest hits again. Which just sucks. What I love to do is theater in a rock & roll context. I think if I did any more in the future, it might well be smaller.”

Roger Waters playing at Fenway Park would be an amazing performance. A nice change of scenery from the baseball team that normally plays there.

VH1 Airing Rare Nirvana Concert Next Friday Night

byAndrew Martin

/site_media/uploads/images/post/n/nirvana/Nirvana_around_1992.jpg

The celebrations surrounding the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind will continue next Friday, Sept. 23. VH1 plans on airing a rare, hour-long concert by the seminal grunge outfit on its own network, VH1 Classic, and Palladia. The broadcast starts at 11 p.m. EST/PST, which means you might be a few drinks in once it begins. That's not the worst case scenario, of course, but just make sure you don't get too rowdy.

The concert footage stems from a gig at Seattle's Paramount Theater on Halloween in 1991. It apparently includes performances of "Breed" and "Polly" along with their renowned cover of the Vaselines' "Jesus Doesn't Want Me For a Sunbeam" and, my personal favorite, "Aneurysm." If you happen to miss the televised viewing of the show, you can still catch it on DVD and Blu-ray when Nirvana: Live at the Paramount is released on Sept. 27.

You can watch a trailer for the DVD below.

Thousands Of Dave Matthews Band Fans Still Plan On Spending Weekend At Governors Island

From: http://gothamist.com/

Will Hurricane Irene crash into Governors Island this weekend?

Despite there being a death toll from storms colliding with music festivals this summer, the Dave Matthews Band Caravan is still planning on setting up shop on Governors Island all weekend. The three-day festival, which some people are paying $825 to attend, starts tomorrow and runs through Sunday night.

Governors Island just Tweeted this morning: "Currently all DMB Caravan concerts are scheduled to go on as planned." They also noted there will be updates on the website if there are any changes. But how sick would it be to hear "Crash Into Me" live while in the eye of the storm, brah?

John Lydon Thinking About A Sex Pistols Reunion

    By Jeffrey Hyatt
    From http://beatcrave.com/

John Lydon Thinking About A Sex Pistols Reunion John Lydon Thinking About A Sex Pistols Reunion
John Lydon – aka Johnny Rotten – has let it be known that he’s game for a Sex Pistols reunion and co-writing new material with the band.
Lydon and fellow original members Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock haven’t spent any studio time together as the Sex Pistols since 1977’s Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols.
The band has reunited on five separate occasions for tours since their initial break-up in 1978, but those shows featured only the old songs and covers.
In an interview with Stereogum, Lydon said that the success of his recent gigs with Public Image Limited had led to him considering regrouping the Sex Pistols once more.
“For me, there wouldn’t be a PiL if it weren’t for them lads in the Pistols, so I feel responsive to their needs,” he explained.
“If they want me to go out on tour with them I’m happy to oblige… until three weeks later when I’m not. That’s how it is.”
Now that the Pil tour is wrapped up, it appears Lydon is comfortable kicking around the idea of not only touring again as the Sex Pistols, but actually working up new material.
Maybe the time is right for the Pistols to get back in the studio and see what kind of musical mayhem they come up with, perhaps something to counterbalance some of the pop trash out there.
    Said Lydon:
“Because I’ve been able to get PiL back together – and because I’ve really been in a songwriting mode – can now look back on the Pistols and imagine writing with them too.”
As Lydon mentioned above, the whole idea of a Sex Pistols reunion could be kaput – like any minute now. But at least he’s thrown the idea out there. And no doubt it has folks talking and wondering what the Sex Pistols might deliver three decades removed from their classic debut.

Pearl Jam To Host Their Own Music Festival

By Jeffrey Hyatt Pearl Jam To Host their Own Music Festival Pearl Jam To Host Their Own Music Festival
The Pearl Jam 20th anniversary party continues, this time with the band set to curate, host and headline their very own music festival next summer.

During an interview aired on Sirius XM Radio, Gibson.com reports that longtime Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis said the festival will happen “somewhere in the middle of the U.S.” — not in the band’s hometown of Seattle.

No other details have been released, but this sounds all very exciting!

2011 is going to be a big year for the Seattle band; the new year starts off with the January 18 release of Live on Ten Legs, which features 18 tracks recorded on tour by the band from 2003 to 2010. You could say the new album is a sequel to Live on Two Legs, the group’s first major live album released in 1998, which collected live performances from the band’s summer tour of ‘98.

As for other 2011 Pearl Jam plans (so far), Eddie Vedder hits the road for a solo tour of Australia in March, and there’s talk of some possible album reissues that might be released.

Part of this 20th anniversary fun included October’s launch of Pearl Jam’s own Sirius XM channel, which features archival concerts from throughout the band’s 20-year career, rarities, unreleased material from the band’s personal music library and music from the band’s side projects, including solo and pre-Pearl Jam music.

As for the Pearl Jam Festival, the big details about performers, number of days – and hey, what it’ll be called – , is going to stay a closely guarded secret until the band decides to make a splashy media announcement about the festival. So until then we wait and wonder….

But it has all the makings of a great addition to the 2011 festival calendar.

Roger Waters The Wall Live Tour 2010/2011

    From: http://www.rogerwaterstours.com/

Kipp Lennon, one of the backing singers on Roger Waters The Wall Live Tour of 2010 2011 has made a post on the Venice band website (Venice are doing the backing vocals) and has posted some photos of the Venice band. Of particular interest is one of them rehearsing with Roger Waters for The Wall tour!

In the blog post Behind The Wall, Kipp Lennon said that the Venice website will be “a tour diary of sorts.” So it will be good to keep an eye on that website. Your humble narrator here will be!

    The Wall Tour Rehearsals Photos

The Wall Tour Rehearsals Photo 2010

The Wall Tour Rehearsals Photo 2010

Some interesting thoughts from Kipp Lennon:

Roger is such a pleasure to work with. He is open to re-examining things, appreciative of the team he has assembled, demanding the best from us all in a good way. Definitely firm in his vision and belief in the importance of being true to the original. He’s constantly wearing so many hats as he considers the history, the music, the stage design…everything down to the costumes, technology and souvenir programs. He’s VERY excited about the technological advances and innovations that a thirty year wait has brought to this project, and his enthusiasm is infectious. I can’t reveal any of the new stuff here, obviously, but, man you should hear him talk about it. You can’t help but step back sometimes and marvel at the enormity of this project and at the man driving it all. His vision and fire, adapting “The Wall”…updating it… preserving it… re-discovering it… he is just as passionate now as he was when he wrote it. And we get to be part of it. He continues to tweak it and polish it and shape it into his vision. It’s funny, after all these hours of rehearsing and hanging, we mostly get accustomed to being with him now, and we’re all just making music together, but every once in a while he’ll start a song like “Mother” or “Don’t Leave Me Now,” and we look at each other like, “That’s the actual guy right there.”

Phish also visits three venues they have played before – the North Charleston Coliseum in North Charleston, SC (11/18/1995 & 10/27/1996), the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI (12/29/1994, 12/12/1995, 04/04/1998, 04/05/1998 & 12/13/1999) and the Mullins Center in Amherst, MA (04/16/1994, 11/03/1994, 12/04/1995 & 12/05/1995). The tour ends with a three-night stand at Boardwalk Hall that includes a three-set Halloween performance in which the band will don a musical costume by covering another group’s album.

In a first, the group will give ticket buyers free MP3 copies of the shows they attend after it happens at LivePhish.com. The band’s MusicToday site will be updated momentarily for online ticket requests with the request period ending on Friday, September 3rd at Noon. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Sept. 10 and 11.

October 8: Austin City Limits – Austin, TX
    October 10 – 12: 1st Bank Center – Broomfield, CO
    October 15 – 16: North Charleston Coliseum – N. Charleston, SC
October 19: Augusta Civic Center – Augusta, ME
October 20: Utica Memorial Auditorium – Utica, NY
October 22: Dunkin Donuts Center – Providence, RI
    October 23 – 24: Mullins Center – Amherst, MA
October 26: Verizon Wireless Arena – Manchester, NH
October 29 – 31: Boardwalk Hall – Atlantic City, NJ

READ ON for a look at the venues Phish will play…

    1st Bank Center

    Capacity: 6,500
Synopsis: AEG’s new venue outside of Boulder, the 1st Bank Center opened with a Furthur show on March 5. The small arena has held concerts, sporting events and family shows since opening.

    North Charleston Coliseum

    Capacity: 14,000
Synopsis: The North Charleston Coliseum opened in 1993 and is part of complex that also holds a smaller theatre and a convention center. Therefore, there are tons of hotels and restaurants located near the arena in a setup that is similar to Hampton. The local airport is extremely close as well making the need for a rental car not essential.

    Augusta Civic Center

    Capacity: 6,777
Synopsis: This city-owned venue was built in 1973 and holds more conventions and gun shows than rock shows these days. Over its history, the small arena has held concerts by the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue, Guns ‘N Roses and the Allman Brothers Band. Augusta is located about two hours into Maine up I-95 from the New Hampshire border.

    Utica Memorial Auditorium

    Capacity: 5,700
Synopsis: The smallest venue on the tour, the Utica Memorial Auditorium opened in 1960 and was the model for the current Madison Square Garden. The Aud’s other claim to fame is that parts of the movie Slap Shot were filmed there. While Phish has never played The Aud, Trey Anastasio performed at the venue on November 11, 2005 in a show that was hyped with a “Countdown to Utica” clock on his website. Both Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman sat in with Big Red that night.

    Dunkin’ Donuts Center

    Capacity: 14,500
Synopsis: Fans that haven’t visited this venue – which was known as the Providence Civic Center at the time – since the last Phish show there in 1999 will hardly recognize the place. First opened in 1972, the mid-sized arena underwent an $80 million renovation in 2005 that included a significantly expanded lobby and concourse, an enclosed pedestrian bridge from the Convention Center, a new LCD video scoreboard, new restaurant, 20 luxury suites, 4 new bathrooms, and all new seats with cupholders in the arena bowl. Both the Providence Bruins (AHL hockey) and Providence Friars (NCAA basketball) call “The Dunk” home.

    Mullins Center

    Capacity: 10,600
Synopsis: Phish performed at the Mullins Center four times between April ‘94 and December ‘95 but haven’t been back since. The venue, located on the campus of UMASS-Amherst, opened in 1993 and hosts the UMASS basketball and hockey teams, numerous concerts, family shows, theater shows, and commencements each year.

    Verizon Wireless Arena

    Capacity: 10,050
Synopsis: “The Verizon” first opened in 2001 and hosts the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL. The venue has seen its share of concerts from the likes of Van Halen, Justin Timberlake, Styx and Bob Dylan as well as many preseason Bruins and Celtics games. Manchester, located approximately one hour from Boston, is the biggest city in Northern New England (ME, VT and NH).

    Boardwalk Hall

    Capacity: 14,770
Synopsis: The largest and oldest venue on the tour, Boardwalk Hall opened in 1926 and was declared a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1987. Starting in 1926 the Hall held the Miss America contest each year until 2004. Back in 2001 the venue underwent a $90-million restoration that upped the capacity and focused on preserving elements of the site’s original design. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, The Police, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna are among the impressive list of artists who have performed at Boardwalk Hall.

Phish Fan Crawls Through Sewers For 2 Days To Evade Cops

Barton Gray, a 31-year-old Connecticut resident, topped off a June 22nd Phish show at Great Woods in Mansfield, Massachusetts like any other phan: selling nitrous oxide in the parking lot of a Red Roof Inn, throwing rocks at the cops who came to bust him, then running off into the woods. And as a perimeter of police closed in around him, Gray disappeared into the sewers, where he got lost for two days because most of the pipes are about 2 feet in diameter, and not wide enough for him to turn around.

It wasn't until June 25th that he began heaving a manhole cover up and down in the parking lot of a Stop & Shop, and a manager at the supermarket was able to help him out. Gray wandered off, but then came back, prompting the manager to call police and report an intoxicated man on the premises (presumably offering heady nugs for their "extra.") Patrolman Roy Bain, who responded to the call, tells the Sun Chronicle Gray was "extremely disheveled," speaking nonsense, was "dirty," and "looked like he'd been dragged through a briar patch." In other words, he looked pretty much the same as when he showed up for the Phish concert two days earlier.

Bain took Gray to a local hospital, but didn't connect him to the incident at the Red Roof Inn until he talked about it with the department's court prosecutor. Fortunately for Gray, the local police decided not to press charges, probably figuring that two days in the sewer and a lifetime spent following Phish was punishment enough. [Via Yemblog]

Phish Return to the Road Summer 2010 With Monster Tour

    From: http://www.rollingstone.com/

    Photo: Loccisano/Getty

Bust your patchwork pants out of mothballs and tune-up your VW Bus. After last year’s triumphant return to summer touring, Phish have announced that they will hit the road again for a 29-date tour that kicks off June 11th in Chicago. The upcoming trek features multiple-night stands in major cities, including three back-to-back nights at the relatively intimate Greek Theatre in Berkely, California, starting August 5th. And while Phish haven’t planned have any of their trademark festivals — such as last October’s Festival 8 in Indio, California — the band has slotted in plenty of shows in more bucolic settings, such as the two-night stand at the scenic Telluride Town Park in Telluride, Colorado.

Check out photos from Phish’s Festival 8.

A ticket request period is currently underway through this Friday at 11:59 at Phish’s website; tickets will go on sale to the general public on April 2nd.

The announcement follows weeks of speculation that the jam-band kings would tour. On March 4th, bassist Mike Gordon hinted to Rolling Stone, “It’s looking like [a tour] is in the talks. We knew we wanted to wait until summer to do something.”

Of course, Phish haven’t exactly laid low over the past few days. On Monday in New York, Phish paid tribute to Hall of Fame inductees Genesis, performing note-perfect live versions of the prog-rock kings’ “Watcher of the Skies” and “No Reply At All.” If you missed that performance, expect those tunes to pop up in their set lists for the upcoming tour.

Check out a gallery of Phish-heads hanging out pre-show at the band’s Hampton reunion gig.

To get fans pumped for the upcoming tour, Phish will release a 3-D version of their Halloween festival in April. Details on theater locations and ticketing will be announced shortly; more information is available here.

The German rock band Scorpions is bringing down the curtain on a career spanning more than four decades.

The band, known for its early 1990s hit "Wind of Change" among others, said on its Web site Sunday that "we agree we have reached the end of the road."

It said it would end its career with a final album — "Sting In The Tail," to be released in March — and a tour that will start in Germany in May and take it across the world "over the next few years."

Guitarist Rudolf Schenker founded the band in Hannover in 1965. Singer Klaus Meine joined a few years later. Both men are 61.

Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax 'Big Four' Tour

    From: http://www.metallica.com/

Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax . . . the rumors are true!

You've been posting and chatting about it for months and we're here now to confirm it . . . Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax will all share the same stage for the first time EVER! Look for the four of us at the Sonisphere shows in Warsaw, Poland and Prague, Czech Republic on June 16 and 19, 2010 with a few more of the festival dates still in the works, you can be sure these shows won't be the only ones.

In the words of Lars: "Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal's big 4 would not only still be around and more popular than ever, but will now play together for the first time...what a mindfuck! Bring it on!"

    What more can we say??

For more info, check out the Sonisphere Festivals site.

    "Official" press release below:

    * METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH AND ANTHRAX TO PERFORM TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY *

    * THE BIG FOUR CONFIRMED FOR SONISPHERE POLAND AND CZECH REPUBLIC *

    * MORE BIG FOUR APPEARANCES AT SONISPHERE SHOWS PLANNED *

The world wide web has been abound with speculation on a possible "BIG FOUR" tour for several months. Now, SONISPHERE can exclusively reveal that METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX will play together for the first time in history, in a move that will have metalheads across the globe frenzied with excitement.

Says LARS ULRICH/METALLICA of this historic announcement:
"Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal's big 4 would not only still be around and more popular than ever, but will now play together for the first time...what a mindfuck! Bring it on!"

"It's about fucking time this happened," declares SLAYER's KERRY KING. "and about time the fans finally get what they want. This is fucking awesome."

ANTHRAX guitarist SCOTT IAN agrees, commenting on the enormity of the announcement.

"People have been talking about these four bands playing together since 1984. That's twenty-six years of expectation!!! And the thing is, I believe not only will we live up to the expectations, we will shatter them!! No other four bands as influential as the four of us have ever done this. Imagine if The Beatles, Stones, The Who and Zeppelin had done shows? Or Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Motorhead? Well, I may be getting into some rarified air here but as a fan, that's how big I feel this is."

These four legendary acts broke out of the underground thrash movement to dominate the metal world in the 1980s, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. The metal giants have never before all shared the same stage, despite huge demand. But on 16th June 2010, METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX will take to the SONISPHERE stage at Bemowo Airport, Poland, to make the dreams of headbangers the world over become a reality. A second Big Four appearance is planned for SONISPHERE CZECH REPUBLIC three days later, with more SONISPHERE shows featuring the awesome combo to be announced in the coming days and weeks.

"This is a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity for Heavy Metal "Fans" to see the four greatest Heavy Metal "Bands" in American History back together on one stage" concludes MEGADETH mainman DAVE MUSTAINE. "If there are any heads left at the end of this Festival that haven't banged, they don't belong there."

Depeche Mode Prepares For Tour Of The Universe

Depeche Mode's "Sounds of the Universe" is out in April.

    Kerri Mason, N.Y.
In a room in New York's Greenwich Hotel, Dave Gahan is sitting erect in a straight-backed chair, immune to the wind outside that's blowing garbage cans down the street.

Gahan, the lead singer for Depeche Mode, is a rock star and he dresses the part, in all black. He folds one ringed hand gently over the other and speaks in thoughtful, measured, complete sentences. Onstage, Gahan can be a shirtless, sweaty beast. Right now, though -- months before the April release of his group's new album, "Sounds of the Universe" -- he's as composed as bandmate Martin Gore's lyrics.

"We're all very individual, but I've always loved a good melancholy song," Gahan says. "Not necessarily in tempo, but some sort of cynical, lyrical content matched with a beautiful melody can really do it for me. Because I identify with that sentiment, wanting to lift yourself from this place."

That contrast between melody and melancholy is perhaps why, after 30 years, Depeche Mode is still a force to be reckoned with. Together, Gahan, Gore and bassist/collaborator Andy "Fletch" Fletcher have almost broken up, almost died and almost been declared obsolete. Along the way, they've sold more than 100 million records worldwide, according to record label estimates. And they remain one of the world's biggest live acts, reaching 2.8 million people in 31 countries on their last tour alone.

"Sounds of the Universe" (Mute/EMI), due April 21, is the band's 12th album and is reminiscent of its "Violator" heyday of catchy dance beats with a hint of darkness. The accompanying world tour -- called, with a certain dark glee, Tour of the Universe -- is already selling out stadiums in difficult markets like Eastern Europe.

"Even at the very beginning, they seemed to connect to the audience much better than other bands," says Mute chairman Daniel Miller. "It was never an 'us and them,' it was very much a one-to-one."

    EXPANDING AUDIENCE

The four-month, 57-date Tour of the Universe kicks off May 10 in Tel Aviv and closes September 5 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The band's first all-arena trek includes eight dates in Germany and two at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl, plus unusual stops like Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia and Latvia, all of which are nearly sold out.

The nostalgia factor certainly seems to help the band's touring in North America. According to Billboard Boxscore, total attendance at Depeche Mode concerts has increased during the past 10 years. 1998's Singles '86-'98 tour saw an attendance of 270,000; 2001's Exciter tour attracted 350,000, and 2005-06's Touring the Angel tour had 410,000 attendees.

Overseas, the touring numbers expand into the millions -- the kind of attendance that rivals U2, kings of the stadium tour. The 37 shows of the European leg of the Universe tour are expected to attract 1.4 million concertgoers.

For Miller, the consistency of the band's artistic output is a big factor in its continued popularity. "The mainstream pop kids tend to jump from one thing to another, from one artist to another," he says. "Then they get married and they give up. They might buy two albums a year. I think Depeche fans are very different than that. There are those in their 40s who've grown up with the band -- but there are a lot of people who have joined along the way and have become very loyal."

Those fans may find that the band is brightening up a bit on the new album, as Gore says -- despite a disturbing video for "Wrong" that involves victims of violent crime. Recorded very democratically in New York (home to Gahan) and Santa Barbara, California (Gore), "Sounds of the Universe" marks the first time the band has had too much material for an album, and that artistic abundance shines through the set.

"There are periods during the making of a record sometimes when you've got five or six songs recorded and you really need something else to stimulate the feel of it," Gahan says. "It's not there yet, and you have to wait until it comes, and it has to be worked at sometimes."

Not so on "Universe": The sessions yielded more than 20 finished tracks, some of which the group used for extras on a deluxe boxed-set version of the album. The ones that made the cut range from the soulful yearning of opener "In Chains" to the melodic swell of "In Sympathy."

"I've always had this big argument with Martin's wanting to put these sort of amazing tracks at the end (of albums)," Fletcher says. "I've said, 'Well no, you can't, you can't.' But with this album, there's no choice really. The songs that were going to be last and second from last were going to be good too."

    LIGHT AND DARK

Gore says that the core tracks of "Universe" are "Peace" and "Little Soul," both of which concern liberation, light and freedom. "I wrote them back to back, and the flow of the album started to make more sense. I really felt they had a spirituality to them. That somehow set a cornerstone for the rest of the writing."

Any 30-year relationship is bound to have its rough patches, and the band has argued about roles and responsibilities. "It's really hard for us to gauge how dark anything is," Gore says, every bit as earnest and awkward as Gahan is cool and collected. "With every record, I think we get less dark. Sometimes Andy tries to keep me in check, he tries to put me in perspective. He says, 'But we're not mainstream, we're still really left-field.' Even if we think we've gone a lot lighter, it's probably not going to be noticed by most people."

For now, though, Depeche More is at peace with themselves and, increasingly, with one another. "I think Dave's songwriting is giving him the feeling of being a part of more, and more secure," says the band's manager, Jonathan Kessler. (Gahan wrote two tracks on "Universe," "Hole to Feed" and "Come Back.") "There's definitely a maturity, like, 'Hey, we've done this enough. It's better that all of us get along than not.'"

And though Kessler characterizes that harmony as "fragile," perhaps the band's personal dissonance helps make it what it is. "Fletch has a bit more of a pop head on him, Martin's a bit more left-field, Dave's a bit more rock, and it all fits together," Mute's Miller says. "You can't completely reinvent yourselves; you're the same people. But with all Depeche Mode records, there's always great songs, that unmistakable voice and then some experimentations. Those cards can fall in lots of different ways. But they're always moving forward."

    Trent Reznor Explains Scalping Controversy

    TRENT.jpg
Last week I told you about a story in the Wall Street Journal about Artist approved scalping. Well over the weekend Trent Reznor of NIN posted in the NIN forum on his website a long explanation of the current situation from the perspective of some one in the middle of it. His explanation is brilliant, straight forward, to the point and nails the complexity of the problem in a way only he could.

"Now we get into the issue of secondary markets for tickets, which is the hot issue here. The ticketing marketplace for rock concerts shows a real lack of sophistication, meaning this: the true market value of some tickets for some concerts is much higher than what the act wants to be perceived as charging. For example, there are some people who would be willing to pay $1,000 and up to be in the best seats for various shows, but MOST acts in the rock / pop world don't want to come off as greedy pricks asking that much, even though the market says its value is that high. The acts know this, the venue knows this, the promoters know this, the ticketing company knows this and the scalpers really know this. So... " - Trent
This sums up the whole problem as simply as can be explained. later in the post Trent explains the stance NIN has taken on this issue.

"NIN gets 10% of the available seats for our own pre-sale. We won a tough (and I mean TOUGH) battle to get the best seats. We require you to sign up at our site (for free) to get tickets. We limit the amount you can buy, we print your name on the tickets and we have our own person let you in a separate entrance where we check your ID to match the ticket. We charge you a surcharge that has been less than TicketMaster's or Live Nation's in all cases so far to pay for the costs of doing this - it's not a profit center for us. We have essentially stopped scalping by doing these things - because we want true fans to be able to get great seats and not get ripped off by these parasites.

I assure you nobody in the NIN camp supplies or supports the practice of supplying tickets to these re-sellers because it's not something we morally feel is the right thing to do. We are leaving money on the table here but it's not always about money. Being completely honest, it IS something I've had to consider. If people are willing to pay a lot of money to sit up front AND ARE GOING TO ANYWAY thanks to the rigged system, why let that money go into the hands of the scalpers? I'm the one busting my ass up there every night. The conclusion really came down to it not feeling like the right thing to do - simple as that." - Trent (emphasis mine not Trents)

It is understandable why other artist are not explaining to their fans how this works if they have decided to embrace this new scalping system, like the acts we mentioned before, it can be hard to come out and say that to the people who will never be able to buy the good seats. But there should be more transparency in the system. More acts should be honest like Trent with their fans.

It is also noteworthy that Trent didn't issue this explanation through the press, through a publicist, he gave it straight to the fans on the bands own message board where all the fans could see it and comment on it directly. (As always we at Up On The Sun would love to hear your comments as well).

Guns N' Roses To Tour With Van Halen?

Axl Rose intends to take the current lineup of Guns N’ Roses out on a worldwide stadium tour this summer, industry insiders told RollingStone.com.

Axl has been basically quiet, keeping out of the limelight for almost 15 years,” said Guns manager Irving Azoff in the news item. “People think they know him, but they really only know what has been said about him by questionable people. He is a good guy and often misunderstood—he is a professional who has worked very hard to build and maintain a high creative standard for Guns N’ Roses, which I support. We have some exciting things in the works this year for GNR, I’m looking forward to it.”

Right on the heels of this news come unconfirmed reports about a co-headlining tour with GNR and fellow L.A. hard-rock icons Van Halen. If this pairing comes to pass, we’re betting it’ll move some serious ducats.
