Alfred Hitchcock's Many Many Movie Cameos

Even casual fans of Alfred Hitchcock are familiar with the director's cameo appearances in his films, a quirk that began in 1927 with Hitch's fifth film 'The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog' and quickly became one of the director's cinematic trademarks. As the appearances became less and less esoteric, fans of the thriller filmmaker would often make a game out of trying to spot the portly extra, eventually forcing Hitchcock to make his appearance early to avoid any superfluous distractions to the film.

Throughout his 60-film career, Hitchcock can be spotted in nearly 40 movies, oftentimes as a passerby walking down the street or random face in the crowd visible for a second before disappearing from view. While he often appeared in physical form, circumstances sometimes forced alternative solutions. In 'Lifeboat,' filmed entirely on a boat (thus making a in-person cameo a bit awkward, to say the least), it's Hitchcock that appears in a weight loss ad in a newspaper. The director can also be seen in photographic form in a class reunion photo in 1954's 'Dial M For Murder.'

With the news that Will Smith is considering a remake of 'Suspicion,' Hitchcock's 1941 film starring Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine, we thought it'd be a good time to look back on some of the director's most memorable cameo appearances. Of course, next time you watch a Hitchcock film, feel free to consult this handy list of appearances to play along at home.
