4 Direct-to-DVD Van Damme Films That Will Explode Your Balls

Jean-Claude Van Damme is arguably our country’s greatest president. He has a fight record of 4078-0 with 831 no contests due to Doing the Splits and Punching Balls. He gets a boner on international television every 46 hours, at precisely the same mathematical rate that humans are attacked by sharks, but science calls this “coincidence.” He has crushed enough testicles to fill 14 oatmeal museums. Yet despite these impressive figures, our love affair with him has gone cold. For many years, America’s only interaction with Van Damme has been when fat people collapse at exactly the right spot of Blockbuster video.

The film JCVD, his first theatrical release in many years, was like a heartfelt apology letter to us. He knows he’s no angel. There was that movie with Dennis Rodman, some rough legal battles, drugs, a movie about exploding pants starring Rob Schneider… and just when he thought he had his shit together and was ready to patch things up, he saw us with Scary Movie 1, 2, 3 and 4. The point is, Jean-Claude can’t take all the blame in this relationship. We’ve both made a lot of mistakes.

I’ve decided to go back to Jean-Claude, determined to make it work. But can his latest straight-to-DVD movies and I rekindle the spark we had back when he first dipped his fists in broken glass and it made me grow a beard? Or when he used the Dim Mak to explode a brick he wasn’t even fucking touching and Dr. Karate appeared on my shoulder as a special friend only I could see? Or when every second of Hard Target made my girlfriend pregnant.

Before we start, the film secrets of Jean-Claude Van Damme are extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. Because of this, analysis of his film has to be carefully encoded. Please cut out these official JCVD data decoding funglasses out and apply them to your head. In fact, take out the word “please.” If you don’t do it, your eyes will only see a series of shapes that will tell your brain to die, so quit screwing around.

Now that you can gaze upon it without going mad, I will be using the standard Van Dammeter for each DVD. It’s the standardized system I developed to measure the Van Dammajesty of any movie, except ones without Jean-Claude Van Damme in them. It’s a scale from one to 10 that takes into consideration all of the important qualities of a picture. Naked, muscly ass with or without an excuse? Is the romantic lead a sassy female reporter? Is there a muddy fight in the rain, with everything on the line? And of course, splits. Other criteria are also taken into consideration but you’d have to wear five sets of goggles to even read a description of how complicated they are. I’m risking a lot with even how much I’ve said already.

Imagine this: Nothing survives the apocalypse except for Jean-Claude Van Damme DVD boxes. All future communication and society would be based on the plotlines of his movies. That’s the only, but valid, reason I invented this system to quickly categorize a JCVD plotline. All his plots fall into one of five funegories.

A: Revenge over a lost loved one drives Jean-Claude Van Damme into karate-filled circumstances.
B: On the run from the law, military or mafia, Van Damme flees to karate-filled circumstances.
C: Jean-Claude Van Damme is unwillingly involved in karate-filled circumstances by a second Jean-Claude Van Damme.
D: This movie is a rehashing of a different movie, only now it stars Jean-Claude Van Damme.
E: If the film’s plot is described by E, this simply indicates that it is profoundly insane.

Jean-Claude Van Damme as… Ben Archer, a bouncer who kicks ass first and talks never.

The Villain: Ben Archer’s wife works for INS, and after finding a container filled with Chinese immigrants, she brings one home with her. Now, what she doesn’t know is that this is the daughter of international criminal Sun Quan, played by Simon Yam (Naked Killer 2). You might not recognize that movie because it was also distributed with the title Legal Rape, and then again as Raped by an Angel. Then finally as just Super Rape. In the film industry, starring in a movie called three different kinds of rape is what’s called “a triple threat.”

Plot: Sometimes people in movies can do crazy things like train oil drillers to be astronauts or decide child custody cases through arm wrestling contests, and it’s okay because movies are stupid. But in Wake of Death, the Super Rape of American cinema, there are realistic consequences to things as stupid as an immigration officer stealing an alien from her office. Within 30 minutes, Sun Quan kills Jean-Claude’s wife. You know what that means, Sun Quan. Killing Jean-Claude’s wife was your first mistake; not wearing a cup was your LAST mistake. Fun with Science: Every time someone types that last sentence, a gas station explodes.

Cinematography: Now you have to realize that this is not only not a classic JCVD movie, it’s barely even a movie. Hours pass between action scenes, and after JCVD’s wife dies, there’s no one left alive that talks. It’s like an uncompromising exploration of cinematic violence as art. No car is crashed without a visual metaphor and 40 crane shots. Knocking on a door in Wake of Death requires 15 camera setups and twice as many jump cuts. I can’t tell if Jean-Claude is working with a brilliant cinematographer or the International Society for Triggering Epileptic Seizures.

Dialogue: When tracking down your wife’s killer, a normal movie would have you interrogate someone, and their words would create information depending on what order they were put in. Sometimes we call this “language.” In Wake of Death, it goes like this: Jean-Claude and his friends tazer someone who might know where Sun Quan is, and everyone screams Chewbacca sounds while he’s tied to a chair and power-drilled. Then they put the film into a blender with a bottle of ketchup. My working theory is that Wake of Death was made as a way to sneak jerkoff material to serial killers in prison.

Editing: Action scenes are more complicated than you might think to edit together. One wrong move, and the audience has no idea where the other gunfighters are in relation to the hostages or, if you’re lucky, the Terminator robots and Krull blades. When the editing is in the hands of someone who might suddenly spend 20 seconds doing a self-indulgent deliberation on the light contrast between brain matter and floor tile, you’ll be so goddamn lost. By the time Wake of Death is done with an action scene, it feels like your brain has been fleeing from a gorilla attack in an art museum. Or as Simon Yam knows it, the plot of Super Rape 2: Let’s Go Bananas.

Sample Script:

INT. Strip Bar - Night
A crane shot spins around BEN ARCHER as he steps over the pool of blood flowing from the dismembered hooker bodies. His shadow trickles across their tits and liquid remains like a ghost.

INSERT: A closeup of BEN ARCHER’S EYE reflects the grim scene. In his pupil, an image of his wife’s butchered body dissolves in, flying on the body of a raven… a symbol for the soul’s unrest that is not lost on Ben Archer.

BEN ARCHER
“Shit the fuck. Mumble.”

BACK TO SCENE: Framed by the foreground naked legs of a stripper corpse, 20 gunmen drive through the wall in a motorcycle with 19 sidecars. The camera follows one piece of wall shrapnel on its lonely flight to the gory floor below. So like BEN ARCHER it is… its purpose gone, yet its destiny so defined.

SLOW MOTION PAN: The chunk clatters to the floor, the ripping sounds of strip bar gunfire its only eulogy. The focus pulls to a tit behind it exploding. A children’s choir sings… FADE TO BEN ARCHER’S ASS fucking tenderly in the moonlight, his cheeks clenching against one another so powerfully that the crack threatens to ignite. A raven crows!!!

Jean-Claude Van Damme as… Phillippe Sauvage, an Iraq veteran plagued with Iraq flashbacks.

The Name: How did filmmakers make it all the way to 2006 without anyone thinking of the name The Hard Corps? That’s like logging onto the Internet tomorrow and realizing the domain name puddingfarts.com is available. Or being the guy who invented the barbed wire tattoo… it’s so simple and clever that you’re sure someone must have already done it.

The movie itself might not live up to the title. The Hard Corps is about a former boxer turned business mogul and the rapper determined to kill him. If the Deadliest Warrior did an episode where the historical figures of George Foreman and Suge Knight met in the field of battle, this would be the movie based on it. And George Foreman gets a Jean-Claude Van Damme on his team.

The Rapper Factor: Jet Li and Steven Segal both revitalized their American careers by sharing the spotlight with rappers like Mos Def and DMX. But fuck that. Jean-Claude Van Damme only shares the spotlight with one man: a second Jean-Claude Van Damme. So despite its hip-hop theme and almost entirely African American cast, it’s as approachable to the hip-hop community as a haunted hockey game at Burning Man.

A Strange Twist: The boxer hires former soldier JCVD to protect him from the rapper, and here’s where it gets insane. Instead of letting Jean-Claude put together a trained security force, he has to select from random people at the gym. If you’re hoping there’s a good reason for this, you’ve got to be fucking kidding. If the Beyonder teleported the gym to Battleworld and told them to pick teams for the Barbecue of Destiny ribs cookoff, it would make about as much sense in relation to the rest of the screenplay.

JCVD, accustomed to madness, is unfazed by this assignment. He selects a small Asian man doing shitty taekwondo and another guy doing capoeira cartwheels. And a cowboy. I think in the director’s cut he also gets an Eskimo and a teenwolf, who fit together to form a truck. He almost overlooks a miniature kickboxing girl until she proves she can fight by standing toe-to-toe with Jean-Claude’s kneecaps and wildly missing with 300 punches in a row. Keep in mind that JCVD is an actor and a martial artist, the two tiniest genres of people aside from chocolate factory workers and shrink ray victims. So the fact that she came up to his waist means she is negative two-feet tall. And now she’s on the Hard Corps.

Or is She? After a 15 second montage of the Hard Corps training, nearly all of them are never seen again.

Screenwriter: “Jean-Claude, I can’t help but notice that there are all of a sudden a bunch of random martial artists in the middle of the script. Did you paste in a couple pages of Bloodsport?”

JCVD: “You can have dat… free of chirge.”

Screenwriter: “Great, but it really screws up OWW! You punched me in the balls!!!”

Jean-Claude Van Damme as… Detective Anthony Stowe, worst cop ever.

Challenge: After starring as two different people in so many films, JCVD may have gotten cocky about his acting chops. But can even he carry a movie without a single good guy and no splits?

I Swear to God, This is Really the Plot: The first thing JCVD does is screw up an undercover art smuggling sting and get his female partner killed. Then he kicks the hell out of her mourning husband. He blows off a date with his wife to drink alone in a bar where he and a barfly discover that he’s a cop and she’s a hooker. “I won’t charge you if you won’t charge me,” he tells her, right before it cuts to him pounding her over a pool table. To give you the moral barometer of the film, that’s the only line in the movie that doesn’t have the word fuck in it.

It Doesn’t Stop: He pulls out as she shouts after him, “I don’t care if you’re a fucking cop! You’re not a fucking human being!” He tells a valet to fuck off as he parks illegally at a karaoke bar where his wife tells him she’s pregnant with another man’s baby. I think he mumbles something about fucking birth control, but between the anger and him being Jean-Claude Van Damme no one will ever know for sure. I did understand him when he growled, “Don’t try to fuck the valet on the way out. Fuck.” Mirroring much of his early work, it seems to be the first screenplay written entirely during painful dick accidents.

Whew. He beats the crap out of two tow truck operators trying to tow his car, buys and injects heroin, then passes out by a dumpster. The next day, he rats out a retiring cop for asking for a harmless favor. After he loses his pension and almost shoots himself, JCVD tells him, “You deserve it.” By this point, I’m sure they made this movie only because it’s illegal to film a baby panda being slowly punched to death.

You’re a Loose Cannon! In most cop movies, the police chief hates you, and the mayor is always up his ass about it. In this movie, it’s “Good morning, scotch-soaked heroin addict with a dead partner! Here’s a special assignment!” Well, surprise: Van Damme blows it. A few minutes later, he gets executed with a gunshot to the head.

The End, Right? In a gruesome ER scene, doctors manage to keep the worst character to ever live alive. As they pull the bullet out of Van Damme’s head, it’s strangely realistic. Maybe too realistic. I wouldn’t put it past the monsters who made this movie if they just killed one of his stuntmen. Which might explain why several of the steaks that craft services put out the next day had tattoos.

Let’s Recover From a Coma, Gang! Since no one in this movie is nice, his wife’s new boyfriend mocks Van Damme’s recovery with, “From asshole to vegetable in one bullet!” Van Damme slowly relearns how to walk and talk, and I intend no insult when I say that he performs not knowing how to do these things very well. In fact, I’d say “Recovering Coma Guy” was the role he was born for if he hadn’t already played “Gay Karate Man” in Monaco Forever and “Timecop” in Timecop.

Spoiler Alert You know in John Woo movies when the two adversaries hold a gun to each other’s heads? If you’re like me, you’ve always wondered what would happen if they both pulled the trigger. Until Death answers that question, and it turns out that it’s Duh. I guess I shouldn’t have expected a happy ending after 90 minutes of heroin and executions.

Jean-Claude Van Damme as… Jack Robideaux, a cop who counters his lack of personality by carrying a bunny.

Touchy Subject: When a cop is transferred to a border town and put in charge of keeping illegals out, a normal movie would have him start as a hard-nosed xenophobe that slowly empathizes with the hardships these proud people are trying to escape. Well, Jean-Claude doesn’t make normal movies– he kicks them until his leg breaks. In this movie about border crossing, he only meets two Mexicans, and neither time does it go well.

His First Mexican Encounter: Van Damme sees a group of illegals crossing the border, and tackles one. He’s wearing a C4 vest and trying to do something that sounds like talking but isn’t. Untrained in bomb disposal, Van Damme starts fiddling with wires, because why not? The bomb squad guy shows up and makes him go away, probably moments before he tried kicking it inert.

Dramatic Defusing! The bomb squad guy shouts, “It’s an optical fiber based CLC casing!” to Jean-Claude and several other people who wouldn’t know what that means. If he expected someone to say something about how smart he was, no one did, and he snips his first wire. Oops. He briefly exchanges with the Latin gentleman the international expression for “oh shit,” and dives away from him and his exploding chunks. It seems like the only real training he received in bomb school was the ability to awesomely somersault away from detonating Mexicans, so he might as well have let JCVD take a crack at it.

Jackson Leaving Beatles Songs to McCartney in Will

Michael Jackson reportedly plans to end his longstanding feud with Paul McCartney by leaving him the Beatles' back catalog in his will. Jacko and Macca have been estranged since a falling out back in 1985, after Jackson beat out McCartney and Yoko Ono -- widow of John Lennon -- in a bidding war for the rights to 200 of Fab Four's legendary songs.

Sir Paul, 66, has long felt betrayed by Jackson, now 50, on principle. In 2006 McCartney said, "You know what doesn't feel very good, is going on tour and paying to sing all my songs. Every time I sing 'Hey Jude,' I've got to pay someone."

Previously, the pair collaborated on Jackson's 1982 'Thriller' extract 'The Girl is Mine,' and McCartney's 1983 single 'Say, Say, Say' from 'Pipes of Peace.'

U.K. newspaper the Daily Mirror quotes a Jackson insider as saying, "Michael told his lawyers he was sad he no longer talks to Sir Paul and said he wanted to make things right."

Just last month, Jackson denied rumors that he was suffering from a deadly lung condition after unauthorized biographer Ian Halperin claimed Jackson was battling emphysema, genetic illness Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (A1AD) and was also losing the vision in his left eye.

35,000-year-old flute oldest instrument ever found

35,000-year-old flute oldest instrument ever found
AFP/DPD – Prehistorian historian Nicholas Conard presents the bone flute from Hohle Fels to journalists in the …

PARIS (AFP) – Stone Age humans may have ripped raw meat from the bone with their teeth but they also played music, according to a study reporting the discovery of a 35,000-year-old flute, the oldest instrument known.

Found in the Ach Valley of southern Germany, the nearly intact five-hole flute was meticulously carved with stone tools from the hollow wing-bone of a giant vulture, says the study, published Thursday in the British journal Nature.

Fragments from three ivory flutes unearthed at the same site, along with nearby instruments not quite as old, suggest that humans who had then only recently migrated to the Upper Danube enjoyed a rich musical culture.

And a stunning female figurine from the same period found only a couple paces from the bone flute, reported last month, points to a broader artistic flowering.

Indeed, the area within the cave that yielded the flutes reveals a veritable artist's atelier.

There is debris from the flint tools used to chip the instruments; traces of worked bone and ivory from mammoth, horse, reindeer and bear; and burnt bone, one of the ingredients -- along with minerals, charcoal, blood and animal fats -- used by Stone Age humans for cave painting.

"We can now conclude that music played an important role in Aurignacian life in the Ach and Lone valleys," commented Nicholas Conard, a professor at the University of Tubingen and lead author of the study.

Aurignacian culture flourished in western Europe during what is known as the Upper Palaeolithic period, from about 40,000 to 10,000 years ago.

The bone flute, part of a treasure trove of artifacts uncovered at the Hohle Fels Cave, was found in 12 pieces scattered over an oval area the size of a large plate. It is in superb condition and reveals many details about its manufacture.

Nearly 22 centimetres (8.7 inches) long and 2.2 centimetres (one inch) in diameter, the instrument has precisely carved markings next to four of the finger holes, probably to indicate where they should be cut.

There are two deep, V-shaped notches carved into the end into which the musician blew.

Conard reports that a playable replica of the flute has not yet been made, but says it is likely to produce a range of notes comparable to many modern types of flute.

The technique for making the ivory flutes -- of which only a few fragments remain -- is far more complicated, according to the study.

First the craftsman would have hewn the rough shape of the instrument from a solid, naturally curved piece of tusk. Then the piece of ivory was split lengthwise, the halves hollowed out, and the holes carved.

Finally the two halves of the flute were rejoined with some kind of glue to form an air-tight seal.

Using radiocarbon dating techniques, Conard calculated that the newly discovered bone and ivory flutes were made at least 35,000 years ago, pushing back the age of the oldest known instrument by some 5,000 years.

Conard speculates that late Stone Age music did not contribute directly to the evolutionary success of the first modern humans.

But it may have given them a slight edge over neighbouring Neanderthals, who died out even as Homo sapiens sapiens flourished.

"Upper Palaeolithic music could have contributed to the maintenance of large social networks, and thereby have helped facilitate the demographic and territorial expansion of modern humans" compared to the more "culturally conservative" and isolated Neanderthals, he said.

Scientists have long speculated that Neanderthals played music too, but no evidence of their musicality has been found so far.

iPhone 3G vs. iPhone 3GS – The S really does stand for speed.

3gsvid_HDRThe thing that intrigued me most about the new iPhone was the ability to take better stills and to record video. When I found out I was eligible for the upgrade, it was a no brainer. In the past few years I had narrowed my mobile devices down to three, I thought the new iPhone would narrow it down to one.

It has.

I LOVE the video recording feature and the stills are usable enough to leave the digital still at home. You won’t believe the sound quality on the video, it’s incredible. However, the thing that blew me away the most is the SPEED of the new iPhone.

When I started to launch apps they were noticeably snappier. The ONLY issue I have had are some intermittent Wi-Fi issues. I’m betting that it’s a power management thing and it will be updated in a firmware fix.

The thing that’s REALLY exciting is the new graphics chip. This will not only improve video recording in future updates; it will also usher in a new era of mobile gaming.

If you’re eligible to upgrade and you’re on the fence… Do it.

Apple has made the ULTIMATE mobile device, now if they will just update Final Cut Pro.

12 Celebrities Who Were Offered Large Sums to do Porn

By Yosef Solomon

It’s well documented that pornography can be quite profitable. For those producing, and in some case, for those staring in adult films especially. Adopting the “any press is good press mentality”, many celebrities have used sex tapes to boost their stardom. Others, as an inadvertent result of stardom, have been offered millions to star in pornographic media. The following are some of the most famous porn offers, and other porn-related situations involving celebrities. Some are hilarious and some are awesome (McCarty), but any case the fact that some of these propositions even exist, and there are markets for some of these hypothetical movies, proves to me that humankind still has a sense of humor.

Susan Boyle

Thanks to YouTube, Susan Boyle became an overnight hit, around the world. Since her tryouts for the popular British reality show in April of 2009, she has become inundated with offers, from book deals to album contracts…to a starring role in… a porn film. Los Angeles-based adult entertainment company, Kick Ass Films, has reportedly offered her a contract worth over $1 million to lose her virginity on camera. “We want to get this movie shot and out while Susan has the world’s attention,” said Kick Ass Films’ executive Mark Kulkis to the New York Daily News. He concluded, “…besides, after 47 years of virginity, I’m sure Susan is also anxious to get something cracking as soon as possible.” There have been no reports confirming if Susan Boyle has yet to respond to the offer from Kick Ass Films.

OctoMom

The media’s infatuation with the OctoMom seems to have wanes, but that doesn’t mean her willingness to exploit her children for money has diminished any. According to a press release on Vivid Entertainment’s website, Nadya Sulleman was offered $1 million and free health care for her and her children if she signs a contract with Vivid. Though the press release didn’t stipulate how many films she would be signed on for, it is understood be a multi-film deal. In response, OctoMom went on record at RadarOnline, by saying: “Those guys at Vivid Video must be nuts! Who wants to see me naked? Maybe in a year when the baby fat goes away.” I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Spencer Pratt

According to the print edition of InTouch Weekly, in late 2007, Gay porn producer, Michael Lucas offered douchebag extraordinaire (and “The Hills” co-star) Spencer Pratt a staring role in one of his porn movies. Lucas stated, “…[Pratt] was born to be in a gay-porn blockbuster. Lucas Entertainment would do anything to be able to center our next major all-male production on Spencer Pratt.” Spencer quickly declined the offer by reportedly saying, “…I think I will have to turn down this offer.”

Sarah Palin

After Sarah Palin’s failed bid to become Vice President of the United States, Florida-based porn director, Cezar Capone was the first to offer her a job. As the self-proclaimed “King of All MILF Films,” Capone offered Palin $2 million dollars to star in one of his films. To sweeten the deal he also offered her husband a co-staring role for $100,000. Despite the fact this offer was sent to her office in Juneau, Alaska on November 6, 2008 the Palin Administration has yet to publicly decline. Interestingly, during the run-up to the 2008 election, Hustler Magazine released Nailin’ Palin, featuring a doppelganger of the Alaskan governor.

Ashley Alexandra Dupre

In 2008, popular New York Governor Elliot Spitzer resigned from office after it was revealed he spent thousands of dollars cavorting with whores. Thanks to public profiles on MySpace, the media got wind of a prostitute Spitzer frequented. Within days of the story breaking, Dupre was all over the news. Subsequently, Girls Gone Wild founder, Joe Francis offered Dupre a deal worth $1 million to host one of his videos; he withdrew the offer when he found old videoo footage of her from 2003. According to Rueters, Dupre then filled a $10 million lawsuit against Joe Francis, but was later dropped. The reason why she dropped the lawsuit was explained in a statement by her lawyer, “Ms. Dupre wants to eliminate all negativity from her life and focus on the positive.”

Dupre also entertained a $1 million offer from Hustler, and a lucrative contract with Vivid entertainment, in which, executive Steven Hirsch was quoted to say, “…she could wind up being the highest paid actress in adult entertainment.” There have been no reports confirming if she has accepted any of these deals offered to her by the adult industry.

Carrie Prejean

Vivid Entertainment CEO, Steven Hirsch, recently sent a personal letter to former Miss California. The letter acknowledged the controversy surrounding her personal beliefs, and topless photos that were leaked on the Internet. Hirsch wrote in his short address to Ms. Prejean, “…our studio is known for its high quality adult films and we are offering you up to $1-million to star in one of our upcoming movies.” Originally sent on May 5, 2009, Ms. Prejean has yet to formally reply to the offer.

Kim Kardashian

Once word got out that Vivid Entertainment was going to distribute a sex tape of Kardashian and ex-boyfriend Ray J, Kardashian filled a lawsuit to halt its distribution. According to the L.A. Superior Court suit, Kardashian asked for unspecified damages, attorney fees and all profits from the sale of the tape. Because of the lawsuit, Vivid stalled distribution of the video. Vivid would eventually released the feature, and according to the New York Post, Kardashian dropped the lawsuit when she was offered a $5 million - most likely just to not get in the way of things.

Kevin Federline

Kevin Federline has consistently and adamantly denied the existence of a sex tape between him and Britney Spears. The very rumor of this tape, however, prompted media mogul (and opportunistic sommabitch) Rupert Murdoch to offer a reported $50 million for it. According to MTV.com, David Hans Schmidt, who is known for brokering celeb sex-tape deals, has estimated this video (if it exists) would actually be worth around $200 million. According to a statement released by Federline’s lawyer, any rumors of his client’s involvement with a sex tape are “false and inaccurate.”

Kelli McCarty

The former Miss USA-turned-soap star, shocked many when she gave up her daytime acting gig to pursue a career in the adult entertainment business. McCarty won the Miss USA crown in 1991, and following her win began a career acting in television sitcoms which eventually led to a recurring role on NBC’s “Passions.” After McCarty’s character was killed off in 2006, she began to explore other opportunities. According to the New York Daily News, McCarty said, “…I enjoy acting, and I really like sex … so this was the perfect opportunity to combine two of my passions.” McCarty’s first project with Vivid Entertainment is called Faithless, and it was released in February 2009. As could be imagined, it feaures the super-milfy McCarty and lots of soap opera-calibre acting.

Ray J

Ray J commented in regards to his sex tape that was leaked: “It is what it is. Don’t hate on my hustle; this is America.” Following the leak of this above-mentioned video, both have become more successful than they were previous to its release: Ray J’s musical career has blossomed; and, they both have gone on to star in her own reality TV series’. Due to the success of the sex tape, Ray-J was also offered a four-feature deal by Vivid Entertainment to star in and direct films. There have been no reports whether Ray J has accepted the deal or not.

Throughout her relationship with the media, Harding has been offered many deals, but none more lucrative than contracts with Playboy and Penthouse. Ironically after refusing the six figure deals, her ex-husband sold a sex tape of them for only a reported $15,000.

John Wayne Bobbit

When John Wayne Bobbit famously had his penis sliced off, the last thing he was probably thinking about was a subsequent stint in adult film-making. Following that fateful incident with his now ex-wife (no shit, right) , Bobbit penned a million dollar contract with Liesure Time Communications to star in John Wayne Bobbit Uncut. Directed by Ron Jeremy, the film went onto sell very well despite its price tag of $69.99. After this debut, Bobbit went onto to star in two more porn movies throughout the mid 1990’s.

Then there’s this guy…

Dustin Diamond

In 2007, controversy surrounded the release of a sex tape with Dustin Diamond engaged in a threesome. According to an entry on The Insider’s website, David Hans Schmidt spoke out against Diamond’s accusations that the tape was released without his permission. Schmidt said, “…Dustin was in on this deal from the start. He made this tape in a St. Louis hotel room with two girls last summer with the intention that I would sell it.” The controversy didn’t stop Diamond from promoting his performance by going on Howard Stern and MSNBC. The tape was finally released to sub-par reviews and less than stellar sales.

Oh and her magazine deal…

Paula Jones

Paula Jones is one of many women in Bill Clinton’s past to accuse him of sexual harassment, and cash in on the fact that Clinton most likley made advances on every woman he came into contact with. Jones ‘lawsuit against Bill Clinton was initially dropped due to a lack of specified damages. She then later settled outside of court with the Clinton’s for a reported $850,000, of which she only saw $201,000. After the Clinton Scandal was settled, Jones accrued heavy legal fees and a large tax debt, and as a result, gladly took an offer to pose for Penthouse. According to an article in USA Today she also did the magazine spread for money and to invest in her kids future by paying for their college educations.

James Cameron promos clips from sci-fi movie to exhibitors

AMSTERDAM -- "The future's so bright I gotta wear shades!" James Cameron cried Tuesday as he strode onto a stage -- with his 3-D glasses on -- to unveil the first publicly shown clips from his 3-D sci-fi actioner "Avatar."

The fittingly epic film promo literally added an extra dimension to Fox's presentation at the ongoing Cinema Expo.

"Avatar" actors Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang, pic producer Jon Landau, and Fox film chairman Jim Gianopulos also greeted the clearly wowed exhibs at the RAI convention center auditorium.

"Three years ago, I stood up here and said the 3-D renaissance is coming," Cameron said. "And from what we've seen in the business, we can now say it has arrived."

In introducing the 24-minute assemblage, Cameron said much of it came from the first third of the film but that there were also glimpses from unfinished portions of later battle scenes involving warring sides clashing over control of the fantasy world Pandora.

The filmmaker also said the action gets nonstop in the latter portions of the film, which throughout is populated by strange life-forms in a world of unprecedentedly rich fantasy elements. Worthington plays an avatar -- a remote-controlled character created by melding his crippled human form into a super-human being -- whose fate lies ultimately in doing battle with his own former race.

Fox made media covering the event agree not to report details of the "Avatar" images or to interview audience members for reactions. But from the sustained applause at the conclusion of the presentation, suffice to say Fox didn't hurt itself at the event.

A cinematic hybrid of CGI, motion-capture animation and live action, "Avatar" is Cameron's first dramatic feature since 1997's "Titanic." At that year's Cinema Expo, Cameron showed eight minutes of the effects-laden disaster drama before it rang up a still-record $1.84 billion worldwide boxoffice and copping Oscar's best pic statuette.

Cameron encouraged theater owners to add 3-D capability as quickly as possible. But acknowledging "Avatar" will have to play in a mix of conventional and extra-dimensional venues due to insufficient number of 3-D auditoriums, he added, "I just want to say that I think 'Avatar' is going to play great in 3-D, 2-D, any 'D.' "

"Avatar" is set to open around the world on Dec. 18, though it's become sport in Hollywood to speculate on whether the famously painstaking filmmaker will wrap the production in time. Cameron's high-profile promo appearance should go a long way toward soothing any anxieties.

"They wouldn't be doing this if it weren't coming out," a top distribution exec from a rival studio said.

Much of the technology used to capture actor performances was developed especially for "Avatar" and its effects crews at WETA Digital in New Zealand and Industrial Light + Magic in Northern California.

Before the "Avatar" presentation, international distribution co-presidents Tomas Jegeus and Paul Hanneman showed a reel of clips from other upcoming Fox pics. Those included first-quarter titles such as the family comedy "Tooth Fairy," starring Dwayne Johnson; Chris Columbus' family adventure "Percy Jackson & the Olympians" and Fox Searchlight's Mira Nair-helmed Amelia Earhart biopic "Amelia," starring Hilary Swank.

The studio also screened its 3-D three-quel "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs."

Also Tuesday, Sony screened the romantic comedy "The Ugly Truth," starring the notably not-ugly Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. Sony's worldwide distribution president Rory Bruer is making a first-time visit to Cinema Expo, grabbing some quality time with regional exhibs.

Elsewhere around the RAI, the confab's large trade-show floor opened with tire-kickers drawn by a Dolby-sponsored lunch mingling among more serious customers. Dolby is showcasing its latest digital servers and other d-cinema products.

Recession-impacted vendors sent fewer reps this year, but Disney's large exhibit promoting Tim Burton's live-action take on "Alice in Wonderland" -- set for release in March -- compensated nicely. The display included costumes, props, production designs and even an entire dining room set.

Steady floor traffic fluctuated only when events drew attendees elsewhere.

"It picked up after the movie screening let out," Imax rep Sandie Green noted.

Cinema Expo always boasts a few food-and-beverage exhibitors -- Polish popcorn purveyor PCO Group has a large space -- but most of the floor is taken up by tech companies. Among them: d-cinema vendors Barco, Christie and NEC, German audio-equipment marketer Ernemann and Milan-based film-projection specialist Cinnemecanica.

Sony Electronics mounted its usual large booth, staffed by reps from Sony's London offices. The company is touting tech and financial offerings for digital cinema as well as video displays for theater lobbies.

"We want to start a dialog with people we haven't met before and also reach agreements with some other people," Sony spokeswoman Elizabeth Pierce said.

Surfing in Gaza helps to keep tensions of war at bay

It is not exactly the surfer’s dream scenario: the sea is flat and discoloured greenish-grey by the vast amounts of sewage seeping into it; the nearby fisherman’s wharf has been reinforced by the rubble of war-smashed buildings. Just beyond the horizon, Israeli gunboats prowl to make sure no one is trying to smuggle in weapons by sea.

But none of this is deterring Gaza’s small but dedicated community of surfers. In their rickety wooden lifeguard shack, Mohammed Abu Jayyab, 35, and Ahmed Abu Hasiera, 29, not only watch over the women swimming in their black robes and headscarves and the boys splashing in groups or the men washing their horses — they also keep a constant eye open for rising waves.

They started surfing a decade ago, inspired by television programmes they had seen about the sport. Ahmed brought back a cheap surfboard from Israel and by trial and error they learnt to ride the waves that rise in winter and high summer. After the Islamist group Hamas won the Palestinian elections in early 2006, Gaza was sealed off from the world and people increasingly turned to the sea for relaxation.

“There’s no other form of entertainment,” said Mohammed, a lean, blue-eyed man with a scrubby beard and baggy surfer shorts. “I feel when I’m surfing I’m free, but only for the moment when I’m riding the wave — then you forget all the other problems around you.”

The two men shared their single beaten-up board for years as the siege tightened and Israel launched deadly raids into Gaza, fighting Hamas and other militant groups firing rockets into southern Israel. Then, two years ago, their story was picked up by an American newspaper and was spotted by an elderly American who had introduced surfing to Israel half a century ago.

Don Paskowitz, a surfer from California, moved to Tel Aviv in 1956 and introduced what was then the eight-year-old Jewish state to the art of riding the waves.

In 2007, aged 86, he was inspired to repeat his mission in the besieged, war-torn slums of Gaza. He took a dozen surfboards down to the huge checkpoint in the fence surrounding the tiny enclave. After a certain amount of haggling, he was allowed to hand over the boards to Mohammed and Ahmed, who had gone to the other side to meet him.

From that moment, a loose organisation called Surfing 4 Peace grew, although because of the strict travel restrictions in and out of Gaza, neither Ahmed or Mohammed has ever been able to meet any of the Israeli surfers involved.

A few years ago, there were only two surfers in Gaza. Now there are at least 20, bobbing out at sea as bemused Gazans look on, some of them sitting in deckchairs by the water’s edge, smoking waterpipes.

Ahmed surfs whenever he can, although the ferocity of the fighting in Israel’s attack last January meant that he had to stay out of the water as Israeli gunboats fired from offshore into Gaza’s densely populated cities.

“Even in the war I’d come and sit and look at the sea. Immediately after the fighting I came back and surfed,” he smiled, recalling the moment in the classic war film Apocalypse Now when an American commander in Vietnam forces his men to surf in the midst of a battle, shouting: “Charlie don’t surf!”

The obvious question, then, was: does Hamas surf? “Hamas guys do surf,” said Ahmed, adding that so did members of Fatah, the rival faction, who fought and lost a bitter battle for control of Gaza in the summer of 2007.

“Americans have a war in Iraq and they play football with Iraqis. We are all Palestinian citizens, there’s no difference in surfing between Hamas and Fatah. In sports, there is no war.”

Where you been, dude?

Angola’s 1,600 km coastline was thick with troops and peppered with landmines during a 40-year civil war. But after peace came in 2002 Angolans turned their coast, which they say offers world-class waves, into a new frontier for surfing and created a budding tourism industry

Cuban surfers made their own surfboards from refrigerator insulation foam until a website, HavanaSurf, was set up to enable surfers from abroad to donate second-hand boards. Authorities remain suspicious; in 1994 a Cuban escaped to Florida on a windsurfing board

Duped newscast airs ‘Lost’ scene as Flight 447’s last moments

In their rush to air exclusive photos of Flight 447’s destruction, no one in this newsroom stopped to ask the logical questions, such as: 1) How did the camera survive? and 2) Why are the photos in wide-screen format?

The answers, of course, are: 1) Because the footage is from Lost. And, 2) because the footage is from Lost.

The source material (starts at 8:05):

UPDATE: According to a Digg commenter (my high school Spanish wasn’t up to the task), the newscaster explains that the camera was destroyed, but the memory card was somehow recovered. ¡Que suerte!

UK Folding Plug concept could flatten that bulky British adapter

UK Folding Plug concept could flatten that bulky British adapter
Of all the AC adapters stuffed into your personal item when globetrotting, the plug used in Merry Old England must surely be the most cumbersome -- its three copper prongs flung to the extremes of a giant block of plastic. That Victorian holdover gets a major re-do with this UK Folding Plug concept. The two horizontal prongs rotate themselves in-line with the top, vertical one, and the body of the adapter then folds in half, resulting in a thickness of about 1cm. Interestingly the plug would still work in either position, with a slimline power strip envisioned to accept three of these slender lovelies at once. It's positively brilliant, but is just a concept at this point, and while we don't have any news to pass along about its likelihood for production, surely some manufacturer will watch the video after the break and start churning these out by the millions.

A Commodore 64 on Your iPhone: An Exclusive Interview with Manomio

Posted by Michael Pinto

A C64 on Your iPhone: Apple you've got to do this!

If you’re a retro computing fanboy like me on Saturday you were devastated to learn that Apple denied permission to the developer who created a Commodore 64 emulator for the iPhone. Now normally this news wouldn’t surprise me, but what broke my fanboy heart is that the developer jumped through all the right hoops: Not only did they get a license from the owners of Commodore but they even got positive signals early on from Apple.

So after having my hopes crushed for reliving my 80s glory days on my iPhone I decided that I had to do something — so in the hopes of getting a second chance from Apple, here is our exclusive interview with Stuart Carnie the CTO of Manomio:

Who is the team behind Manomio and why did you start your company? We are a team of two, Stuart Carnie (CTO) and Brian Lyscarz (CEO). Brian contacted me after hearing about me porting a C64 to the iPhone back in May of 2008. Like myself, he shares a passion for retro gaming and also saw the opportunity the iPhone and App Store presented. To clarify, Retro gaming is largely an unfilled category on the App Store today (I’ve actually submitted a request to Apple to create a Retro category on the App Store). To back this up, according to a survey released by Solutions Research Group, 71% of buyers were male with an average age of 31 years. This could be considered a sweet spot for many retro games.

What first inspired you to create a C64 emulator for the iPhone? I grew up with the C64 (I’m 35 now), so partly for nostalgic reasons. I also wanted to learn the iPhone SDK and see just how capable the iPhone was as a portable computer.

The C64: Don't we all deserve to have one of these in our pocket?

How much effort went into the creating the C64 emulator? I actually had an initial version running within a few days, but it was a long way off looking like it does today. This is where Brian, and his aesthetic eye turned it into a ‘thing of beauty’. We’ve already had many compliments, including John Gruber regarding the ‘gorgeous UI’.

How did you go about getting permission from the current owners of the C64 and what was their initial reaction? We had removed the rough edges before we went to Commodore Gaming. They were very impressed with what we had achieved and naturally excited to join the iPhone ride. In the end, they directed us to Kiloo Aps, who holds the rights to mobile versions of the C64 brand.

Dear Steve Jobs: The hacker inside of you should let this happen!

Creating any application is a huge investment, did you take any precautions like talking to Apple in the early stages of development? Yes, we spoke to the Sr. Partnership Manager, iPod & iPhone, Apple Europe in the UK, who concluded that we were okay with our approach and that Apple was actually interested in our concept - the ability to purchase add-on content via the App Store to extend an existing application. Apple would still receive their 30% cut and users could buy officially licensed C64 titles. 3.0 was announced some time later, and ‘In-App’ purchases revealed, essentially approving our general approach.

Is there still any chance that you can still get the application approved by Apple? Yes, we do expect that some form of our application can be approved, given there are already many examples of emulators on the app store, such as Frotz, and according to toucharcade.com, Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Axe.

And is there any way retro gaming iPhone fanboys can help you? They already are, by blogging, tweeting, commenting and posting news articles - someone at Apple is bound to see one of these and hopefully notify the right people. We’ve seen in the past that enough noise can make a difference, so we hope our story ends the same.

Below: If you’re any sort of retro gaming fanboy I dare you to watch this demo and not want a copy:
