Superscraper in Miami Could Steal Dubai's Crown

Plans have been floated for a new superscraper in Miami that could steal the world’s tallest crown from Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

Despite Miami’s financial woes, having a reported 100,000 plus properties in foreclosure according to the Miami Herald, Kobi Karp has submitted designs for Miapolis - a ‘city within a city’ planned for Watson Island.

The 160 storey building would be more than 183 metres higher than the Burj Khalifa if built and would house an amusement park, observatory, restaurants, 1.96 million sq ft of shops, over 1000 apartments, 1 million sq ft office space and a 792 room hotel.
The project has been around for more than a decade but it is reported that developer Guillermo Socarras has been in talks with the Federal Aviation Administration to secure approval for the height of the tower.
The project is currently looking for funding from investors.

You may have thought the Dolphins' home stadium had hit bottom with its "Land Shark" moniker, but now another bizarre retrofitting is in the works.

With NFL officials warning that Miami is about to be on the "Do Not Host Super Bowl" list, stadium officials are suggesting a 621,000 square-foot roof be attached on top of the stadium.

The immediate online responses to the roof ("mind numbing ugly," "could scare away a hurricane") have been brutal. Thankfully, the proposed changes inside are getting much better reviews:

The good news for football fans at both levels is that seating is being brought in closer to the sidelines. The gap between the bleachers and the field was always a gridiron drawback, and it's corrected somewhat with the latest revisioning. Plus those upgraded video screens looks awful sweet.

More lower bowl seats and big-screen TVs are also proposed renovations.

The roof would cover all the seats in the stadium, while at the same time allowing the sun and rain to come down on the field.

So while spectators would be spared the rain, which plagued the last Super Bowl here, the field and game play would be subject to the elements.

Dolphins CEO Mike Dee made it clear Thursday the renovations are not about the loyal Dolfans who faithfully come to the games during the regular season. This is all about the Super Bowl.

"This is not about the Dolphins or the stadium," Dee said. "It's about economic development. It's about being able to compete for events on a national and international level."

The next question is who is going to pay for all these renovations, which could escalate to close to $300 million.

Falcon Waterfree Fixtures Wipe Out Halftime Flush at Super Bowl XLIV

LOS ANGELES, CA — Halftime at the Super Bowl is generally marked by two events, both often characterized by excess: the entertainment program and the rush for restrooms that produces the condition known to public works departments across the country as the halftime flush.

The urinals in the men's rooms at Land Shark Stadium in Miami, the host of Super Bowl XLIV, won't be contributing to that phenomenon, says Falcon Waterfree Technologies LLC, the maker of 220 waterless urinals at the site formerly known as Dolphin Stadium.

It's the second Super Bowl challenge in Miami for Falcon. Its fixtures were in place at the stadium for Super Bowl XLI in 2007.

The company says its products are known as the "Urinal of Champions" because of their use at several major sports venues. They include Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Los Angeles' Staples Center and the University of Michigan's "Big House."

The Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, host of the 96th Rose Bowl Game this past Saturday and the BCS National Championship on January 7, installed 259 Falcon waterfree urinals in 2002 and now saves 10.4 million gallons of water annually, the firm says.

Use of the fixtures at the Rose Bowl Stadium also helps avoid 187,200 pounds of CO2 emissions each year because by eliminating water, no energy is used to treat or transport it.

The waterfree urinals at Land Shark Stadium save an estimated 8.8 million gallons of water a year and avoid 158,400 pounds of CO2 emissions annually.

International sites using Falcon's urinals include the Taj Mahal and London's Heathrow Airport. The company, which is based in Los Angeles, estimates that its products have helped save 22 billion gallons of water worldwide. That's enough to fill about 4.4 million tank trucks, or 33,333 Olympic-size swimming pools or 141 billion "venti-size" coffee cups, the firm says.

Fergie to Dolphins Approved by Owners

The Miami Dolphins already have a slew of celebrity owners. Only now are the Phins becoming glamorous.

As in, G-L-A-M O-R O-U-S. Glamorous. Glamorous, glamorous. You get the point.

Fergie -- female vocalist for the Black Eyed Peas -- is set to become the franchise's latest celebrity part-owner. It's music to the ears of the legions of hip pop/dance fans -- a genre I just made up -- in South Florida.

Owner Stephen Ross is compiling a roster of talent off the field that may have already eclipsed the goods on the team. Ross hopes the celebrities will create enough buzz to keep fans in the seats even if the wildcat loses its charm.

In addition to Fergie, the Dolphins have Marc Anthony, Jimmy Buffett, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, and the Williams sisters on board. You know what that means, one killer conga line. Conga!

Williams sisters' to own part of the Miami Dolphins - NFL deal to be announced Tuesday

DAVIE, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins' partnership with Serena and Venus Williams will be announced at the team's training complex Tuesday.

The team scheduled the event Thursday, billing it as a "major corporate announcement" hosted by owner Stephen Ross.

On Wednesday, a person familiar with the agreement said the sisters would become the latest celebrities to own a stake in the Dolphins. The person didn't want to be identified because the team hasn't confirmed the deal.

Musicians Gloria and Emilio Estefan and Marc Anthony recently bought small shares of the team, and Ross forged a partnership with singer Jimmy Buffett.

The Williams sisters, who live in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., have combined to win 18 Grand Slam titles.
