ake The Bus, Err, LimoLiner

Can A Tortoise Bus Beat The Boston-NYC Shuttle and The Mighty Acela Express?

By Francis Vale

The first thing that showed I wasn't in Kansas anymore was when the cabin attendant got on her cell phone to call a tardy passenger to see if he was coming, and if he was, they would wait a few minutes for him. Our errant passenger was just outside the bus, however, so we were able to push off right on time.

Uhh, did you say "bus"? Yes, a bus. But that's not quite fair as this was no ordinary bus. It was a LimoLiner, a first-class throughout, 28-seat wundervehicle that cossets its passengers in full reclining leather seats that have so much leg room that even a pro basketball player would have no problem stretching out his lanky seven foot frame and wiggling his shoe-challenged toes. I was taking the LimoLiner from downtown Boston to downtown New York to see how it stacked up against its main competition, planes and trains, on the congested Northeast Corridor. The answer follows, and it is surprising.

But first, a little background on this stretch limo on steroids. The LimoLiner (http://www.limoliner.com) is the brainchild of Fergus McCann, who is either visionary or daft, depending upon where you sit, so to speak. If you think that nothing can compete with the regularity of the airplane shuttles, or the blistering Acela Express, then the latter moniker fits.

But if you are a mobile warrior who wants free of charge, high speed mobile Internet access the whole trip; drop down personal viewing screens for watching TV (two channels) and newly released DVD movies; five music channels; seat-side power outlets; crystal clear cell phone reception all the way; conference tables for huddling with your associates en route, and think $69 is a fair price, nay, a bargain, for all these rolling amenities, then McCann is a true visionary.

The Boston leg of my trip began at 6:00AM in front of the Hilton Boston Back Bay hotel, where its very comfortable guest lounge serves as the LimoLiner passenger "terminal." We had a scheduled arrival time of four hours and ten minutes later in downtown NYC at the Hilton New York Hotel on 6th Avenue at 53rd Street. The Acela Express choo-choos into Penn Station in three and a half hours from Boston's South Station, while the airline shuttle will drop you off at La Guardia in about one hour after leaving Boston.

You will, of course, pay a premium for this speed. An Acela Express business class one-way ticket costs $99, and on the Delta Shuttle, coach seating will set you back about $240. However, discount tickets can usually be found for both the Acela Express and the shuttles, but the LimoLiner will always come out cheaper, if only by about twenty dollars or so.

As for the shuttle, the oft quoted one hour travel time is egregiously misleading, as you will have to get to the airport at least an hour before flight time to get frisked, scanned, and barefoot before departure. Moreover, as anyone who has sat and fumed on the tarmac well knows, one hour flight time does not always mean true travel time, especially in bad weather or if there is air traffic congestion. Then there is the half hour or so taxi ride from LGA to downtown NYC, if the traffic gods are smiling on you, that is. Boil it all down, and the shuttle will eat up almost three hours, or maybe more, of your time end to end.

Of course, you can forget about mobile Internet access on the shuttle, as there isn't any. Likewise, you can forget about luxury leather seats and huge stretch out comfort. Cell phone service on the plane will also be problematic. As for seat-side power outlets, you can forget about those, too. And the "intimate" coach seat accommodations on the shuttle make you pray you don't get a 300-pound Samoan who has yet to learn about personal hygiene as your seat-side traveling companion. On the upside, though, this flying discomfort chamber gets you psychologically prepared for handling those snarling NYC taxi drivers.

The Acela Express is a totally different story. Fast, highly comfortable and clean, traveling on this train will always make you smile. The Acela Express cabin attendants are polite and helpful, there is a quiet car to escape from the ring-a-ding cell phone racket, and all the seats have power outlets. However, there is, as of yet, no free mobile Internet access on the Acela Express. If you want to dial home for your e-mail you have to pay to use the on-board phones. There is also no "in-flight" entertainment, so bring a book. The Acela Express also offers something the LimoLiner doesn't—a club car watering hole for soaking your frayed nerves in gin on the return journey.

If you factor in the time its takes to plough through the yellow cab grid-locked traffic from Penn Station to a more central downtown location like the NYC Hilton hotel terminus of the LimoLiner, the total travel time for the Acela Express comes to about four hours. Although, because of the very same NYC traffic, our LimoLiner arrived at the NY Hilton about five minutes late, making the whole trip from Boston in fours and fifteen minutes.

The LimoLiner made only one stop en route to New York, at Framingham, MA, and it was express all the way after that. The LimoLiner was quiet, relaxed, and the cabin attendant was friendly and extremely helpful. She even served as a rolling Help Desk for an Internet challenged passenger who couldn't get his laptop to connect. She succeeded. She also had a supply of extra Ethernet cables on hand for those people who had laptops without a wireless access card. Each seat has an Ethernet port, as well a cup holder and power outlet. She also served a decent continental breakfast of a muffin, yogurt, banana, and coffee, tea, etc.

I was curious how it would be to work on the LimoLiner as reading or working on a rolling vehicle can be cause for blacktop mal de mar. Surprisingly, the quiet LimoLiner ride was rock steady, and it wasn't until we hit a small patch of stop and go traffic while traveling through Connecticut that there was some lurching about. This also brings up the Achilles heel of the LimoLiner when compared to the almost unstoppable Acela Express. The LimoLiner is still a bus, and as such it is at the mercy of traffic jams, roadside accidents and the weather. So even the best-laid LimoLiner schedules can be scrambled if a tractor-trailer accidentally dumps its load of casaba melons all over the highway.

The LimoLiner leaves Boston and New York three times a day, at 6:15AM, 12:15PM, and 6:15PM weekdays, with a late evening bus from NYC to Boston departing at 11:15PM for those who want to carouse a bit in the Apple and sleep it off on the ride home. They also have weekend service, departing from Boston on Saturday's at 8:00 AM, and at 1:00PM from New York. On Sunday, the LimoLiner leaves Boston at 12:00 PM, and from NYC at 5:00PM and 5:30PM. These are OK schedules, but both the Acela and the shuttle beat the LimoLiner hands down for scheduling flexibility.

I took the Acela Express on the return leg from NYC to Boston to see how the LimoLiner stacked up against the train. Surprisingly, the LimoLiner was more comfortable than the Acela Express, which is saying a lot. The LimoLiner has better seats, more stretch out room, and offers true first class passenger accommodations. The bathroom on the LimoLiner also defies all previous bus-induced expectations with its hospital cleanliness and fresh cut flowers.

For overall comfort, amenities and luxury, the LimoLiner is the winner and steams past the Acela Express, and by more than just a nose. As for the shuttle, it wasn't even entered in this comfort race. However, the LimoLiner can't beat the service in the first class car of the Acela Express, but that Acela seat will cost you $149, or $80 more than the one size fits all LimoLiner price of $69. And if you are a worrywart about on-time performance, then the Acela Express beats both the LimoLiner and the shuttles.

So which to choose, LimoLiner, Acela Express, or the shuttle? For the true Road Warrior, at least until the Acela Express and the shuttles get their Internet act together, the LimoLiner is the clear champion. There is also a semi-private back section in the LimoLiner with two tables that is perfect for a group of up to ten business people to have a meeting along the way.

For those who are willing to plan ahead and can accept the possibility of a delay—if you are a shuttle traveler such delays are a standard part of your anxiety routine already — then for the moment at least, the $69 LimoLiner is the new crown champion for moving Mobile Warriors in high style back and forth from Boston to New York. And even if you don't carry a laptop, it's still pretty cool.

Up there ... Ramana levitates in front of the White House / Reuters

01:23pm

DUTCH magician Ramana has been doing his best to freak out American people by levitating in Times Square and in front of the White House.

The illusionist, real name Wouter Bijdendijk, hovered several feet above the pavement with apparent ease. His only "prop" was a stick that he held with his left hand.

Watch a video of Ramana levitating and talking outside the White House here.

A household name in his native Netherlands, Ramana has performed for Queen Beatrix and has been honoured in India with the Golden Cloth award, the highest cultural honour ever given to a westerner, metro.co.uk reported.

"This is an art," he said.

"And in India, they see it also as a science. I hope I make people wonder," Ramana said.

Ramana's repertoire also includes "flying" up to 10 metres above ground, mind reading and other forms of Indian street trickery.

10 of The World’s Most Unique Restrooms: Understanding the New Toilet Culture

Next to eating, drinking and sleeping, going to the restroom is something that we all do quite frequently. Most of the time, we tend to forget that the design of a restroom, especially public bathrooms, have an impact on the individual and on society as a whole. Come witness a worldwide initiative designed to educate society and to improve the designs and structures of public restrooms.

In shaping a good toilet culture among today's society, there are initiatives underway to improve the design and structure of public restrooms.

THE JOHN MICHAEL KOHLER ARTS CENTER RESTROOM, USA

The Kohler art centre houses arts exhibits in Sheboygan, WI, USA. The Kohler fund sponsored six artists to design artwork using the facilities and sources from Kohler- a company that sells bathrooms and accessories. One of the restroom units entitled "The Social History of Architecture" features the development of architecture from ancient Egypt until the current time. One restroom unit features "The Many Uses of Water" using beautiful ceramics in blue colours.

SOCCER BALL SHAPED RESTROOM, KOREA

In 2002, both South Korea and Japan became the hosts for the football World Cup finals. A former Korean mayor came up with the idea of having soccer ball shaped restrooms around the football stadium as part of a campaign to develop clean and comfortable public restrooms in Korea during the big event.

“POP UP” RESTROOM, UK

This is actually a “pop-up” urinal for use during the nighttime. The durable, cylindrical stainless steel urinal, which is called the Urilift will be lowered into the ground during the day or when it is not needed. Healthmatic, a Wiltshire, UK based company has been given rights to distribute the Urilift in the UK. The Urilift can be used by 3 persons simultaneously.

SEMI-TRANSPARENT TOILET, UK

This public toilet was built in front of London's Tate Britain Gallery as an art exhibit by an Italian born artist. What is special about this restroom is that it is made up of semi-transparent glass. The "visitors" of the public toilet (who need to defy their own fear and embarrassment) can see through the one-way mirrored glass but passers-by can't see the person inside the restroom.

THE “TOILET BAR” RESTROOM, AUSTRIA

The "toilet bar" of Vienna is actually a public restroom situated in an underpass near the Austria National Opera. The restroom features several units of urinals shaped like thick lipsticked lips with teeth and a tongue. Patrons were charged 75 cents for each visit. Eventually, the urinals were removed after facing public and political pressures as they were said to be offensive and sexist objects.

WORLD'S LARGEST RESTROOM, CHINA

Quite recently in July 2007, a Southwestern Chinese city in Chongqing opened up a free of charge, four-story public restroom. There are more than 1,000 toilets in this 30,000 square foot restroom. It features an Egyptian-themed interior with soothing music playing in the background. Some of the urinals are uniquely shaped, including crocodile's mouths and busts of women. The government officials in Chongqing are currently preparing to submit an application to list this facility as the world's largest public restroom in the Guinness World Records.

3-D GOLDSTORE, HONG KONG RESTROOM, CHINA

The gold store owner in Hong Kong was inspired by Lenin's vision of building public restrooms made of gold. Everything in the restroom including the toilet, sink, tiles and doors are all made of solid gold.

THE CHAMBER POT GALLERY RESTROOM, USA

The Chamber Pot gallery is a public restroom located in Yellow Springs, Ohio, USA. What's special about this restroom is that it acts as a showcase for art works by local artists. The paintings will hang for a year in the restroom and there is a log book in the office that highlights the artists and their art work as well as contact information.

SINGAPORE ZOO RESTROOM, SINGAPORE

This spacious and airy restroom has won many awards locally and internationally for its cleanliness and practical design. A big section of the restrooms are located outdoors, resembling a beautiful garden.

THE JUNGLE JIM'S RESTROOM, USA

The Jungle Jim's restroom is located in the Jungle Jim's International Market in Ohio, USA. The Jungle Jim's is actually a shopping initiative which provides all sorts of products from international cuisines to pet supplies. The entrance to the restroom is rather unique, as it looks like "port-o-lets" or "porta-potties" and may confuse new customers. The walls inside are decorated and the restroom units are spacious and clean.

Neutron Beams Search for Da Vinci's Lost Masterpiece

FLORENCE, Italy -- Art diagnostician Maurizio Seracini has waited 30 years to get to the bottom of his biggest mystery yet: whether Leonardo da Vinci's greatest lost fresco lies behind a wall in the Palazzo Vecchio here.

Seracini's team of 30 will scan the palazzo's 177-foot-long wall in mid-November, looking for the Battle of Anghiari, a work so magnificent it has been called the "school of the world." The $1.5 million search expedition will jump-start a multidisciplinary conservation program at the University of California at San Diego's Center of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture and Archaeology.

Since founding the art- and architectural-diagnostic center Editech in 1977, Seracini -- a fourth-generation Florentine -- has synced studies in engineering, art history and medicine to examine more than 2,000 buildings and artworks. He augments standard archival work with the use of ultrasound, X-rays, infrared, thermography and ultraviolet devices.

Editech's notable discoveries include the original positions of the Three Graces in Botticelli's Allegory of Spring and the hasty cover-up by a lesser hand of Leonardo's Adoration of the Magi, which earned Seracini a mention as the only real-life character in Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code.

Wired News caught up with Seracini at his office. From behind a no-nonsense desk in a historic palazzo with high ceilings ribboned with frescoes, he talked about the relationship between technology and art.

Inside the Mind of a 9 Year Old File-Sharer

Written by enigmax on October 21, 2007

Everyone knows that a significant number of file-sharers are teenagers and young adults and they get their share of press. But what about the true kids - the under 10’s ? TorrentFreak makes itself feel old trying to keep up with the agile mind of a 9 year old file-sharer.

Ojo

Like most publications, here at TorrentFreak we regularly interview adults. However, when a recent conversation with a child turned to file-sharing, we took the opportunity to give the P2P kids a voice. We had a little chat with a 9 year old girl who wants to be called “Hannah” (after Hannah Montana) and she talks to us about LimeWire, BEBO, YouTube and her perception of the rights and wrongs of copying - even her frustrations with DRM.

“Never work with children or animals” said WC Fields. TorrentFreak takes a chance:

TF. Hi Hannah! How old are you?
- I’m 10 in 12 days

TF. What sort of music are you listening to right now?

Sean Kingstone, Shayne Ward and High School Musical 2

TF. Where did you first get into music?
- On the music channels, on MTV.

TF. When did you get a PC?
- People had computers but I couldn’t go on them but my Dad bought me one last year. I have internet.

TF. What do you do on the internet?
- MSN, talking to friends and cousins, games and dressing-up games [dolls]

TF. When did you first start using the internet to get music?
- My cousin showed me YouTube and then LimeWire and I was like “whoa cool!”

TF. What was cool about it?
- Because you can put anything in and it will come up and you don’t actually pay for it. Well you have to pay for the internet and LimeWire comes with the internet but you have to pay for that so LimeWire isn’t really free.

TF. Ok…I see….Do you get music from anywhere else?
- My cousin gets it from BEBO. She copies it from other people’s pages and puts it on her own.

TF. Do you think it’s ok to copy the music?
- Yes it’s ok because she only does it to make her page better.

TF. So you’re sure that it’s ok to copy it? What do you think about copying?
- I suppose it’s not ok to copy but people copied it off her site so she just copies theirs. It’s like, you’re copying my t-shirt so i’m copying you on shoes.

TF. Ok, so a bit like copying school work?….Hmm….ok, let’s talk about copying on the computer again. When you started using LimeWire, did anyone ever mention that if you did certain things you might be breaking some laws?
- Why would they put it [music] on the internet and invent mp3 players if it was against the law?

TF. Confusing isn’t it?….You mentioned you like Sean Kingstone - what if I told you that Sean Kingstone’s boss might send you a letter asking for money because you shared his album on LimeWire? What would you say to him?
- W.E! [whatever!]

TF. Come on, play along with me. What would you say if he did?
- I’d say “tooooo strict!” and anyway he can’t make me do anything. He’s not the boss of me, he’s the boss of Sean Kingstone.

TF. What do you think might happen if you didn’t pay him?
- Nothing. I’m too young to be charged by the government so he can’t charge me.

TF. Would you carry on using LimeWire after he sent the letter?
- Yeah!

TF. Why?
- Because you can get good albums off there. Duh!! My CD’s don’t work in my mp3 player so LimeWire is the only way to do it. I bought High School Musical 2 on CD but it won’t go on my mp3 [player]

TF. How would you make LimeWire better?
- To speak to the person sending the music to make sure they send the right one, sometimes they send stuff that doesn’t even play.

TF. Do you know what a pirate is?
- They have parrots [effects ‘arrrrr’]

TF. Do you think its legal or illegal to copy a CD or DVD?
- Some men right, they sell you a DVD at the market but when you get home it doesn’t play, that’s illegal.

TF. Why is it illegal?
- Duh!! Because they tell you it works and when you get it home it’s rubbish and jumps in the middle and its a waste of money!

TF. Do you think you should be paying for stuff off LimeWire? You have to buy CD’s from the shop…
- You have to pay for CD’s because they’re actually on a disc not on the computer. My cousin, right, she uses LimeWire when she doesn’t have any money for CDs.

TF. Did you ever download anything by anybody and then go to see them?
- I got stuff by Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe and then I went to see Blue. Why don’t you ask me what my favorite hobby is?

TF. Ok, what’s your favorite hobby?
- Dancing to music, it’s fun!!

Thankyou, Hannah. That’s it! Have a nice birthday!

Ash

No, Ash probably doesn't live on the same level in the "common lexicon" as Van Damme - but not knowing the name, or where it came from, displays an ignorance of probably THE greatest B movie actor of our time.

Learn yourself something, Chis - go rent Evil Dead 2.

Yellow card on Macgregor

For using such an obscure irrelevant item. Does anyone know who ASH is? I have never even heard of this guy or what it refers too. Do a Google search and see what you find. NOTHING. IMDB doesn't really have anything either. A toughness comparison must be of equal substance in the common lexicon.

ASH???

Ash will kick Van Damme's but with his boomstick!

Rambo

Plot Synopsis: Twenty years after the last film in the series, John Rambo (SYLVESTER STALLONE) has retreated to northern Thailand, where he’s running a longboat on the Salween River. On the nearby Thai-Burma (Myanmar) border, the world’s longest-running civil war, the Burmese-Karen conflict, rages into its 60th year. But Rambo, who lives a solitary, simple life in the mountains and jungles fishing and catching poisonous snakes to sell, has long given up fighting, even as medics, mercenaries, rebels and peace workers pass by on their way to the war-torn region.

That all changes when a group of human rights missionaries search out the “American river guide” John Rambo. When Sarah (JULIE BENZ) and Michael Bennett (PAUL SCHULZE) approach him, they explain that since last year’s trek to the refugee camps, the Burmese military has laid landmines along the road, making it too dangerous for overland travel. They ask Rambo to guide them up the Salween and drop them off, so they can deliver medical supplies and food to the Karen tribe. After initially refusing to cross into Burma, Rambo takes them, dropping off Sarah, Michael and the aid workers…

Less than two weeks later, pastor Arthur Marsh (KEN HOWARD) finds Rambo and tells him the aid workers did not return and the embassies have not helped locate them. He tells Rambo he’s mortgaged his home and raised money from his congregation to hire mercenaries to get the missionaries, who are being held captive by the Burmese army. Although the United States military trained him to be a lethal super soldier in Vietnam, decades later Rambo’s reluctance for violence and conflict are palpable, his scars faded, yet visible. However, the lone warrior knows what he must do…
