The following table is a partial list of artificial objects on the surface of the Moon. They have been abandoned after having served their purpose. The list does not include smaller objects such as the retroreflectors and Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package. Nor does it include several commemorative or personal objects left there by Apollo astronauts, such as the golf balls from Alan Shepard's lunar driving practice during Apollo 14, flags, or the Fallen Astronaut statuette left by the crew of Apollo 15.

Five third stages of rockets of the Apollo program form the heaviest pieces. While humankind has left over 170,000 kg of Earth on the Moon, only 382 kg of the Moon has been returned to Earth by Apollo and Luna missions.

The only artificial objects on the Moon that are still in use are the retroreflectors for the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment left there by Apollo astronauts.

Note that objects listed as being higher than 90 degrees east or west are on the far side of the moon. These include Ranger 4, Lunar Orbiter 1, Lunar Orbiter 2 and Lunar Orbiter 3.

Indian doc develops enzyme that can destroy HIV

Bangalore: Dr Indrani Sarkar has has every reason to be excited. Her PhD thesis, which started in 2002 at the Max Planck Institute in Dresden, Germany, has thrown open the doors for developing enzymes that can destroy the dreaded Human Immuno-deficiency Virus or HIV within infected cells permanently.

Indrani and a team of scientists have developed an enzyme called Tre. Tre is a custom enzyme capable of detecting, recognising and destroying HIV, much like a pair of molecular scissors.

"In laymans terms, it's an engineered enzyme which recognises sequences in the HIV genome that is duplicated, integrated virus and by the process of recombination, it cuts out the virus from the genome," says she.

The biggest challenge with treating HIV today is that the virus becomes dormant and often develops resistance to HIV drugs.

The only way then to cure HIV is to get rid of the virus completely and Tre, the enzyme that Indrani constructed after a year and its 126 "cycles of mutation" totally deplete HIV in the human genome in three months in laboratory conditions.

"It's a beautiful approach, but like any other drug, this one too will take a few years to reach clinics — anywhere between five and 20 years actually. A lot of research has to be done because since one is working with a novel enzyme, one has to engineer the enzyme," says she.

According to the latest statistics given out by UNAIDS and WHO, there are close to 39.5 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the world and though it will be a while before an imminent cure is likely, Dr Indrani Sarkar's findings certainly hold out hope for the millions who are battling the disease across the globe.

German Beer Festival - in Boston this weekend, but its a pay event.

A good place for German beers here in town (or at least it used to be) is Jacob Wirth's over in the Theater district. Browsing their site shows that not only do they have a "monthly beer club" but that going on right now is their Oktoberfest celebration:

Finally - for something not too far from home from the Chis, check out Julio's Liquors on Route 9 in Westborough. This place is unreal - over 200 beer varieties to chose from and you can mix and match 6 packs of both 12 and 22 ounce bottles. Its overwhelming, kind of like Toys R Us for beer.

And you thought non-stick chewing gum was the heat. Turns out, Coca Cola may be plotting a new version of Sprite that actually chills itself upon opening. Apparently, the drink has to be kept at a specified temperature before being snapped up, and once the oh-so-thirsty consumer pops the top, "a mechanism inside creates ice made from the drink, so it is not diluted." Reportedly, the beverage would sensibly be called Sprite Super Chilled, and if it does indeed hit the UK (and prove successful) by "early next year," the technology could then be passed along to Coke, Diet Coke or even "super cold alcoholic drinks, particularly beers."

Winamp goes where iTunes doesn’t dare

I've been using iTunes in combination with a little app called Hamachi for some time now to share my home music library with my computer here at work (where sadly I spend most of my time), but I've never been a huge iTunes fan - it was just the only thing that worked for this purpose. As an anal music cataloger, the limitations imposed by iTunes "user friendliness" were just too many. Winamp has always been a superior player, but without the network sharing, it was missing *the* key component that is most important to me.

Not anymore apparently! Or rather, not starting on October 10th and 10:10am when Winamp 10 is released!

Its still yet to be seen how straight forward its going to be, but I'm hopeful to say the least. There's a beta out now that the Pig Roaster will be testing in the next few days - stay tuned for my first impressions.

Their policy is to present items from highest to lowest on a day of posting rather than when the transaction actually was authorized.

Chismillionare had 4 small less than 20 dollar debit transactions from 8/29 and 8/30. I also wrote a check on 9/3. All of those transactions posted on 9/4. You would think the oldest gets debited first?

YOU WOULD BE WRONG!!!

The Check(since it was largest) posted first, before smaller transactions that were five days old. Their response was- "that is what our customers voted for when we polled them"

Doing a bit of digging on ripoff report (www.ripoffreport.com )shows this to be a systematic abuse and an engineered algorithm by Bank of America to generate fees. The likelihood of overdraft is far more likely this way. Several class action suits are pending. More digging reveals this policy is not what account holders who pay monthly fees receive- their transactions are presented chronologically. Customers with My Access checking and savings accounts pay no monthly fee whereas Bank of America Advantage checking customers pay quite a hefty fee every month.

Is Belichik on their board of directors?

So, If there's not enough money to cover just the check that was written, all of the ATM transactions bounce triggering a $35 dollar fee per transaction instead of just the check as the last transaction. So instead of one $35 bounce item for the check they generate 5 bounces for a nice $175 fee.

So the $11 transaction costs almost $50.

A good rule of thumb is to always have a few hundred more than you mentally think you have(after all your cash should be in a higher yield instrument anyway like an ING account) or just use cash for purchases like George Carlin said.

If you want to check out a very welcome new trend in science fiction fandom (assuming you're a huge geek), then Google the word "Femtroopers." This is perhaps the most celebratory development for horny Star Wars fans since Princess Leia became Jabba the Hutt's barge ho.

I think these photos are really hot, but maybe that's because I've seen "The Empire Strikes Back" at least 25 times and own a George Lucas action figure. While the armored hot pants and bare midriff are both nice touches, the contoured breast plate is definitely the sexiest/funniest part of the costume.

Whether this becomes a huge trend or not, Femtroopers suddenly make it a lot easier to defend people who dress up like Star Wars characters. Either way, this definitely gets a few more people to attend WonderCon next year.

TORONTO -- Commercial director Joseph Kosinski is in final negotiations to develop and direct "Tron," described as "the next chapter" of Disney's 1982 cult classic. Sean Bailey is producing via the Live Planet banner, as is Steven Lisberger, who co-wrote and directed the original film.

Kosinski, who last month signed on to helm the remake of "Logan's Run" for Warner Bros. Pictures, will oversee the visual development of the project and have input on the script, which is being written by "Lost" scribes Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Story details are being kept secret.

The original, about a computer programr thrust into a computer and forced to fight in games he helped create, is remembered for its sci-fi gladiator-style battles and groundbreaking special effects. It was the first movie to use computer-generated images instead of models and other optical effects in conjunction with live action. The arcade game based on the movie was so popular that it earned more than the movie.

When making the original, in order to convince the studio to take a chance on a first-time director, Lisberger shot a test reel, financed by the studio, involving the deadly Frisbee battle. In a case of historical synchronicity, sources said one of the things Kosinski will be doing is working on a sequence involving the movie's Light Cycles to work out his vision for the movie. Sources also said visual effects personnel, for many of whom "Tron" was an inspiration to enter the business, already are jockeying for pole position to work on the sequence.

Kosinski is a former architect whose specs caught the attention of director David Fincher, who convinced Kosinski to move to Los Angeles, where he joined the director at commercial house Anonymous Content. Kosinski then moved quickly up the ladder, eventually directing award-winning spots for Nike, Apple and Nintendo that gained notice for their use of computer technology that erased the lines between reality and CGI.

Kosinski is repped by Endeavor and Michael Sugar and Bard Dorros at Anonymous Content.

Sept. 12, 1933: Physicist's Reaction Begins Chain of Events

1933: Physicist Leo Szilard gets the nuclear age rolling, so to speak, by conceiving the idea of a nuclear chain reaction while standing at a red light.

Szilard, a native of Budapest and a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I, left Hungary for Germany to escape the postwar rise of anti-Semitism. Originally an engineering student, he switched to physics after moving to Berlin and studied under Albert Einstein, among others.

His decade in Berlin was fruitful and Slizard was engaged in a number of projects, including development of the linear accelerator, cyclotron and home refrigeration. But with the rise of the Nazis, Slizard found himself on the move again, this time to London.

Not long after his arrival, Slizard read an article in the Times of London rejecting the idea of any practical use for atomic energy. So incensed was Slizard, the story goes, that he stood right there at a traffic signal in Bloomsbury and dreamed up the nuclear chain reaction. A year later he patented the concept.

His early attempts at triggering a reaction, however, failed. He tried using beryllium and indium to no effect and, in 1936, he assigned his chain-reaction patent to the British Admiralty to ensure secrecy. Soon thereafter, Slizard accepted a teaching post at Columbia University in New York, and moved to the United States.

There, he met Enrico Fermi and, reacting to the discovery of nuclear fission in a Berlin laboratory, the two men realized uranium was the agent they needed to produce their reaction. Working at the University of Chicago, they produced the world's first controlled nuclear chain reaction in December 1942.

How to Make Custom IPhone Ringtones Without Paying Apple $2

Apple started selling iPhone ringtones for $2 apiece through its iTunes store last week, but if you aren't afraid of a little tinkering, you can get that "Hey Ya" or "Sexy Back" ringtone without shelling out the extra bucks.

Users have to pay Apple $1 for a song, plus an extra $1 to convert that song into a ringtone. Of course, hackers immediately set out to find a way to generate iPhone ringtones for free. In a classic game of cat and mouse, Apple has spent the last few days trying to block iPhone owners from installing free ringtones on their devices -- only to watch hackers come up with workarounds just hours after each patch is released.

Apple has continued to update its iTunes software (which syncs with the iPhone to add ringtones) to block the specific loopholes uncovered by the hackers. In fact, iTunes was updated almost immediately after the first loophole was uncovered Friday.

Despite Apple's best efforts, the chase continues. The most-popular desktop applications for installing custom ringtones were updated this weekend, in one case only hours after Apple updated its software to block them.

Mac users can rely on applications like iToner ($15 from Ambrosia Software), which is a full-featured ringtone manager for the iPhone. Windows users can get similar functionality from iPhoneRingtoneMaker ($15 from Efiko Software).

These options feature drag-and-drop ringtone management, including the ability to use just about any sound file and the option to set specific songs to play when specific people call. The latest iTunes update appears to have crippled iPhoneRingtoneMaker for some users, but the developers at Efiko are working on the problem. IToner is currently up to date.

Gene Therapy without Viruses

The promise of gene therapy has long been held up by the lack of a safe and effective way to insert the desired therapeutic genes into the right cells. To solve that problem, MIT researchers have developed a new polymer for gene therapy that is as effective as viruses, the standard carriers, but it seems to have none of the risks of viral treatments. The researchers have successfully tested a version of the polymer in mice with ovarian cancer, and they believe they can further modify the polymer to target virtually any cell in the body.

Gene therapy works by delivering to a specific group of diseased cells copies of a gene that corrects what ails them. "If you could get it [a gene] where it's needed, you could treat many diseases," says the MIT Center for Cancer Research's Daniel Anderson, one of the leaders of the polymer research group.

Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang ups the ante

FRANKFURT, Germany — Thank heaven for automotive manufacturers like Bugatti that specialize in wretched excess. How else could the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show provide the appropriate balance for all those size- and horsepower-challenged microcars like the Toyota iQ and the Volkswagen up!?

And thanks, too, to Bugatti for rendering its latest creation, a special back-to-nature edition of the Veyron 16.4 supercar, dubbed Pur Sang (French for "thoroughbred").

The Molsheim-based maker of subdued 16-cylinder machines has elected to offer a model sans exterior paint, enabling the underlying raw materials to show through. That means the monocoque is rendered simply in clear-coated carbon fiber, wrapped in body panels of polished aluminum.

The effect, needless to say, is stunning. The price? If you have to ask...

What this means to you: How else would you expect Bugatti to one-up its sister brand Lamborghini and the new 1 million-euro Reventon?

"People have accused me of being so far up Tiger's ass that he can barely make a full swing, but I maintain that he is a special person. There is no one else on the planet who can do what he does or even think of doing what he does. I have often thought, instead of showing Tiger's reaction to a shot he has hit, we really should show the reaction of those around him." But here is the next best thing.

"I am walking down the 18th fairway at Firestone Country Club with Ernie Els and Tiger. Tiger has just popped up a three-wood about 40 yards behind Ernie into some wet, nasty, and horrible six-inch rough," Feherty says. "Tiger's cursing and taking clumps out of Ohio with his three-wood. Of course, we are not showing this on TV, because we want to be able to interview him later. Ernie and I walk past Tiger's ball, and it is truly buried.

"Ernie, tied with Tiger, is in the middle of the fairway. I am standing with Ernie and my microphone is open. Ken Venturi [in the CBS booth] sends the TV commentary to me, and I say, "Tiger has 184 yards with two big red oaks overhanging the green. He has got absolutely nothing. With a stick of dynamite and a sand wedge, he might be able to move this ball 50 yards."

Steve Williams [Woods' caddie] tells me [with a hand signal] that Woods is using a
pitching wedge. Tiger takes his swing. Every muscle in his body is flung at the ball. It
looks like he has torn his nutsack. The divot went as far as I could hit the ball. I've got my microphone at my mouth thinking, what the hell was that!

The ball sails over the trees, lands behind the hole and backs up to about six feet from the flag. I open my microphone, and Ernie Els turns to me and says, 'Fuck me!'

My producer comes on in my earpiece and says, 'Was that Ernie?' I say yes. My producer says, 'Fair enough.'

I could have described that shot for 15 minutes and not done as good a job as Ernie Els did with two words. Ernie is one of the best players in the world, and, if you want to know how good Tiger really is, just ask Ernie Els!!

- sold at Christie's London in 1985 for $160,000. This wine bottle was purchased for a private collection and prominently features the initials of Thomas Jefferson etched into the glass. This practice was not unusual in the 18th century when large purchases were made directly from the Chateau.
