Facebook took a giant leap into its mobile future today by launching the highly anticipated Facebook for iPad app.

Facebook's app (download here) joins other popular social-networking apps on the iPad including Twitter, Flipboard, and Gowalla, all of which had a heady lead on Facebook.

Facebook for iPad was rumored to arrive at F8, the company's developer conference held late last month, and then it was rumored to arrive at Apple's launch event for the iPhone 4S last week. It was a no-show for both events.

According to Facebook, the "full Facebook experience" is on the iPad--driven by your fingertips on the touch pad. Features include larger photos for a vivid slideshows on-the-go. There's a search bar at the top of the left-hand navigation menu, and groups, lists, games and apps are also located on the left-hand menu, while notifications and messages are at the top of every screen.

Facebook users can take advantage of the iPad's sizable touch screen to video chat with friends, IM, and play games using full-screen mode. Watching and recording HD video is also possible in the app.

More details are available on Facebook's blog and stay tuned for a CNET hands-on video on the app.

Facebook is increasingly becoming a mobile company. Today, 350 million out of Facebook's 800 million users log in via mobile devices. Soon, "more than half of all our users will be mobile users," Erick Tseng, Facebook's head of mobile products, recently said at GigaOm's Mobilize, an annual mobile industry conference held in San Francisco.

AT&T Reveals Five New Android Smartphones

by
from http://mashable.com/

The folks at AT&T weren’t kidding when they announced plans to introduce 12 Android devices this year. The company just unveiled five Android smartphones, which brings AT&T’s total Android lineup to 19.

The new smartphones are Motorola Atrix 2, Samsung Captivate Glide, Samsung DoubleTime, Pantech Pocket and AT&T Avail (pre-paid customers).

Leading the pack is the powerful Motorola Atrix 2, with a 4.3-inch, 960×540 (qHD) screen, 1 GHz dual-core CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a 8-megapixel camera capable of full HD video capture and an additional camera for video chat.

Samsung Captivate Glide, as its name suggests, has a side-slide QWERTY keyboard. It also packs decent specifications: a 4-inch, 480×800 Super AMOLED screen, a 1 GHz dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU, 1 GB of RAM, and two cameras, a 1.3-megapixel one at the front and a full HD 8-megapixel one at the back.

Both devices support AT&T’s HSPA+ fast data transfer standard and both are running Android 2.3.

The Pantech Pocket is a mid-range device running Android 2.3, with a 1 GHz CPU, a 4-inch screen, a 5-megapixel camera. To like it, you’ll have to appreciate its form, as the device’s dimensions are 114.7 mm x 7 8mm x 11.3 mm, which makes it a lot wider than most candy bar phones.

Samsung DoubleTime is a device for those who want something different. Its specifications are nothing to write home about — a 600 MHz CPU, 3.2-inch screen and Android 2.2 — but its candy bar form opens to reveal a second 3.2-inch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard.

Finally, the AT&T Avail is for those that don’t like contracts (the other pre-paid smartphone in AT&T’s roster is LG Thrive). It’s a fairly standard candy bar mid-range smartphone, with Android 2.3, a 3.5-inch screen, a 5-megapixel camera and 512 MB of RAM.

Pricing and availability is unknown at this point, but we can expect all five devices to hit the market in 2011.

Call me unimaginative, but I always thought blimps were best suited for sporting events and alternate history fiction. The US military would beg to differ, if this pearly-white behemoth is any indication. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Blue Devil Block 2, a floating surveillance platform that could soon appear at war-torn combat zones the world over.

These photos come courtesy of Wired’s Danger Room, and at first glance, the airship doesn’t live up to its namesake. It’s neither blue, nor particularly menacing, but the Blue Devil is downright massive: it’s 370 feet long from end to end, making it nearly double the size of the Goodyear blimp.

This whale is slated to carry an array of wide-area cameras and eavesdropping equipment into scenic Afghanistan by the middle of next year. Once it reaches its destination, the Blue Devil will hang 20,000 feet in the air and starting spying. An onboard supercomputer will process all the information, which will then by relayed to our friendly forces below.

The Blue Devil has been in the works for a long time, as most military projects tend to be. Interestingly, Danger Room notes that it’s one of two airship-related military projects in the works, which is probably two more than any civilian would’ve expected.

The gorgeous Italian Star Wars movie you never knew you wanted

This film is a creative, non profit experiment. It's goal is to be a tribute to Star Wars.
It was co-produced by hundreds of associate producers from all over the world..
You could be one of them:

Lovingly made Star Wars fan films, they're growing on trees these days. The latest not-for-profit Star flick is the atmospheric Italian film, Dark Resurrection: Volume 0. In this film, a group of Jedis discover a derelict spaceship with a nasty secret. Don't worry, it's nothing like Turkish Star Wars.

Director Angelo Licata tipped us to his latest production, and we're certainly gosh-darned impressed. It's the prequel to his 2007 movie Dark Resurrection: Volume 1, which cost £7,000. Here's the synopsis:

Master Sorran, is obsessed by his search for an ancient civilization which, according to legend, holds the secret of immortality. After many years he lights upon the wreck of the civilisation's most powerful starship: the Resurrection.

Sorran ignores the dangers and orders his crew to dock. The explorers and Sorran himself will face the mysteries of the Resurrection and the secret of the origins of the dark side.

Volume 0, Volume 0, in the original script written by Angelo Licata and Fabrizio Rizzolo, was only the prologue of Volume 2. After months of post-production, we realised that the material deserved to be properly developed as it tells interesting stories about the past of evil Lord Sorran and the mythology of Eron; fulcrum of the entire story.

There's a lot of good stuff going on here, from the creepy, Gigeresque set design to the young Jedi fiddling with his lightsaber to that holographic Vigo the Carpathian barking a whole bunch of dire craziness. Hats off to Licata and his team for putting together a handsome homemade movie. You can read more about the Dark Resurrection films here.
