Kimmel’s Post-Oscar Show: Hanks, Tyson and Lindsay Lohan

Kimmel’s Post-Oscar Show: Hanks, Tyson and Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan and Jimmy Kimmel (Photo: ABC)

Jimmy Kimmel recruited a bevy of A-list beauties – including Lindsay Lohan – for an elaborate spoof of TV fitness infomercials that premiered late Sunday night on his sixth annual post-Oscars edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on ABC.

The “infomercial” was for an exercise program called the “Hottie Body Hump Club,” in which those who desire a “hottie body” are instructed to hump an inflated rubber exercise ball. Kimmel, of course, starred as the program’s guiding light – “Jimmy K” – in sweatshirt, gym shorts and requisite headband.

Somehow, Kimmel and his crew persuaded nine female stars to participate and, yes, hump the exercise balls in unison. Besides Lohan, Kimmel’s “Hottie Bodies” were Scarlett Johansson, Minka Kelly, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Kelly Ripa, Eva Longoria, Emily Blunt and Sofia Vergara. The lavishly produced infomercial video was reminiscent of the “Handsome Mens Club,” last year’s centerpiece production on Kimmel’s post-Oscar show. That one featured a surprising group of top male stars including Sting, Matthew McConaughey, Patrick Dempsey, Matt Damon, Lenny Kravitz, Rob Lowe and others.

Watch Lindsay Lohan’s Surprise Appearance “Steal” the Show:
.
This year, the biggest surprise was Lohan, who has made no TV appearances lately other than court appearances. She’s currently facing grand theft charges in connection with a $2,500 necklace she’s accused of stealing from a jewelry store. She made a reference to the theft charges in the “Hottie Body” spoof when “Jimmy K” said the exercise program “is so affordable, it’s practically a steal!” That’s when Lohan quickly interjected: “Allegedly!”
What else did Kimmel cook up for the post-Oscar show? Here are some highlights:
“Tyler Perry’s The President’s Speech”: While the “Hottie Body Hump Club” might get the lion’s share of attention, we thought this spoof was the funnier bit – a “trailer” for an Americanized version of “The King’s Speech” starring Mike Tyson (“Sir Michael Tyson”) as a speech coach for President George W. Bush (who appeared only in stock video). Tyson was unbelievably funny.

Tyler Perry’s The President’s Speech
.
Tom Hanks’ Oscar story: The two-time Oscar winner told a surprisingly interesting story about the state of his two Oscar statuettes (for “Philadelphia” in 1993 and “Forrest Gump” in 1994). He said they’ve already corroded so badly just from people holding them occasionally that he has had to have them re-plated – and even that might not restore them to like-new condition.

Toddlers & Tiaras with Tom Hanks
.
“Miss Ultimate Sexy Baby Nevada Pageant”: This one was another pre-produced bit that has to be seen to be believed. It began with Hanks telling Kimmel that he’s appearing in a cable TV reality show with his “daughter,” six-year-old “Sophie” and then introducing a clip. We then saw Hanks playing the role of a creepy pageant dad on TLC’s “Toddlers & Tiaras” preparing to enter his daughter in the “Miss Ultimate Sexy Baby Nevada Pageant.” The surprise ending: Sophie loses to … “Rhonda Howard,” whose “dad” is none other than Hanks’ pal Ron Howard, director of “Apollo 13.” The bit made reference to that movie, and also “Big” and, believe it or not, “Turner & Hooch.” The whole thing was a scream.

Marijuana Department Store Opens in California

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) -- First there was Home Depot, now there is the Walmart of weed. That's the term being used to describe a store set to open in Sacramento on Saturday.

The 10,000 square foot marijuana emporium is the first of its kind, and is being billed as the place where growers of medical marijuana can come for supplies and training, according to a report by the Sacramento Bee. The store goes by the name weGrow, and while it does not actually sell marijuana, it offers all the necessary manufacturing tools and information.

The weGrow operation was born out of a warehouse in Oakland, Calif., and its operators are hoping it becomes the first national franchise of its kind. The company also plans to open stores in New Jersey, Colorado, Oregon, and Arizona.

Space shuttle Discovery docks with International Space Station for the last time

By Daily Mail Reporter

From: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/

Space shuttle Discovery has docked at the International Space Station on its final visit before becoming a museum.

The shuttle, on its final voyage, will spend a week at the orbiting outpost and has delivered supplies and the first humanoid robot to fly in space.

A spacewalk is currently taking place at the ISS as two of Discovery's visiting crew float outside to move a broken ammonia pump and install an extension cable, among other chores.

Discovery should have made the flight in November, but was grounded by fuel tank cracks and only took off on Thursday with two seconds to spare after it was held up by computer errors.

Altogether, there are 12 people on board the spacecraft, representing the U.S., Russia and Italy.

Four of the five major partners currently also have vessels docked there, including cargo ships from Japan and Europe.

The docking took longer than usual because of a slight misalignment between the shuttle and the station, which means the hatches did not open.

The station's commander, Scott Kelly, shook hands with shuttle commander Steven Lindsey as they landed.

Astronauts have now installed a platform holding a spare radiator for the station, which was carried aboard the shuttle.

Before the landing, Discovery performed a 360 degree back-flip so space station cameras could capture any signs of launch damage.

At least four pieces of debris broke off the fuel tank during lift-off and a strip of insulating foam struck its belly.

Nasa managers do not believe the shuttle was damaged because the foam came off late in the launch.

As a precaution, every shuttle crew since the 2003 Columbia disaster has had to thoroughly check for possible damage to thermal shielding.

Discovery - the first to perform the manoeuvre in 2005 - is the first in the fleet to be retired this year.

Endeavour and then Atlantis will close out the 30-year shuttle programme later this year.
Discovery is the oldest of the three and the most travelled, with 143million miles logged over 39 flights and 26 years.

The robot it carried - Robonaut 2 or R2 for short - will remain at the space station, where it is hoped it will eventually serve as an astronaut assistant.

A Twitter update from the robot, posted by a human at mission control, said: 'We're here! Home Sweet Home!'

Trent Reznor: 'I Am Truly Stunned' to Win an Oscar

Composing "The Social Network" was “the best experience I’ve ever had,” added the Nine Inch Nails frontman.

Turns out the competition was a magic feather for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

While the Nine Inch Nails frontman and his British composing partner each expressed disbelief over their winning best original score Oscar for their synthy, non-orchestral soundtrack to The Social Network, Reznor revealed a surprising anecdote about his road to Oscar glory.

“[Inception] composer, Hans Zimmer, who I’ve been battling at awards shows all year, told me, ‘In a lot of ways, I hope you win because it’s helped open up the field a bit for texture of what film scores can be,’ ” Reznor told reporters backstage. “I am truly stunned by this. David [Fincher] bugged us to do it. I’m very glad we did. It’s been the best experience I’ve ever had from start to finish.”

Reznor, who'd already “put Nine Inch Nails on the back burner" when Fincher approached him to score Network (the two had previously together on the creepy title sequence to Fincher's 1995 film Seven) admitted that movie composing was never in his plans.

"Thankfully David had a very clear idea of what he wanted,” said Reznor. “The only immediate direction he gave us was that there be no orchestra, be similar to Bladerunner -- inhabit the same iconic quality -- but not sound dated. It was definitely difficult to score for a bunch of people talking in rooms. There were no landscapes, or battles scenes. It wasn’t obvious to us what shape it would have."

For his part, Ross said he’d “been stunned” by every bit of recognition the pair had garnered throughout award season and only when the two received an Oscar nomination did he believe their Academy Award changes. “That morning I thought, ‘Wow, this is a reality.’ I’ve come in with no expectations. It’s been incredible.”

It’s a long way from the day the musicians saw Fincher’s first cut of the film. “We watched 45 minutes, and it had more dialogue than in last 10 films I’d seen combined. That was a quiet car ride home,” Ross said.

Next up for the Oscar-winning composers? They are currently scoring Fincher's next film, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Baby Gaga breast milk ice cream: "Miracle of motherhood" or totally gross?

(CBS) Baby Gaga or baby gross?

A London ice cream parlor says it plans to serve up sugary confections made from human breast milk so everyone can experience the "miracle of motherhood," according to Reuters.

"What could be more natural than fresh, free-range mother's milk in an ice cream?" said Victoria Hiley, one of the 15 women who donated their mammary milk.

Hiley has a point, at least when it comes to little ones. Breast-fed babies gain natural protection against stomach problems, asthma, diabetes, respiratory infections and childhood leukemia, according to the government's Office on Human Health. And a recent study found that 900 babies and billions of dollars would be saved each year if 90 percent of American women breast-fed their babies for the first six months of life.
But what happens when adults drink from mom's soft serve? Is the stuff safe?

There's no evidence that "occupational exposure" to breast milk can spread HIV or hepatitis B, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But since mothers can spread HIV to their babies through breast milk, the CDC says people working in milk banks can wear gloves as a precaution.

No word on what steps the parlor has taken to lick any potential risks.

Is Diet Soda Really the Healthier Soft Drink?

New study finds link between drinking diet soda and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke

The premise: Many soda drinkers opt for diet over regular, thinking that the zero calories and zero sugar makes the drink a healthier option. But the scientific evidence backing up that idea is lacking. In fact, a 2005 study reported that people who drink diet soda instead of regular don’t lose any extra weight. Rather, they gain weight. Now, a new nine-year study finds a connection between drinking diet soft drinks and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

The set-up: Researchers gathered 2,465 subjects. The average age was 69 and about two-thirds of the participants were women—but the findings are still applicable to you. “We didn’t see any interaction with age or sex,” says study researcher Hannah Gardener, ScD, an epidemiologist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “Therefore there’s no reason why the results would be different for younger, male subjects.”

At the start of the study, people were asked to document what foods and beverages they consumed and how often they consumed them. They were asked about their exercise routines and whether they smoked or drank alcohol. And the participants had physical checkups.

With the preliminary research in: 901 participants said they never drank soda or drank it less than once a month, 282 said they drank at least one regular soda daily and 116 reported they drank at least one diet soda a day.

The results: Over the next nine years, those who drank diet soda daily were 48 percent more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, compared with those who rarely drank soda. There was actually no risk increase for cardiovascular disorders among the daily drinkers of regular soda.

“We had a strong bias for conducting the study, as other diet soda studies have suggested an association between diabetes, weight gain, coronary heart disease and other ailments, but we were surprised to find the strength of the results,” says Gardener.

A few flaws in the study are worth noting: Participants were only asked about the soda habits at one point (they may have changed habits at some point during the nine years) and there’s no information about which soft drinks were being consumed. And even though the researchers tried to consider for risk factors that that could skew the results, they couldn't account for everything.

The takeaway: Despite the overwhelming results, the study doesn't prove cause and effect. Meaning, it’s too early to recommend swapping a diet soda for a regular calorie-heavy soda. “I actually don’t think you should drink any soda at all,” Gardener suggests. “I’d always recommend a glass of water over any other beverage.”

Drive Angry 3D really did get its title from Groundhog Day

Author: Eric Eisenberg
From: http://www.cinemablend.com/

It should surprise nobody that the Drive Angry 3D script written by Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer was inspired by a plethora of other films. Based on the tradition of road movies from the late 60s and 70s, elements ranging from the cars the characters drive to plot elements come straight out of that era. The title, however, does not - that credit goes to Harold Ramis' comedy Groundhog Day.

Just yesterday I sat down with Lussier and Farmer to discuss their newest film and one question that I asked was regarding the direct influences that the writers used while developing the film. But amongst titles like Vanishing Point, Duel, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, Race With The Devil, Lussier made a point of mentioning the Bill Murray comedy. Now you may be asking yourself, "What the hell does one thing have to do with the other?" During a scene in which Murray's character, Phil Connors, steals the groundhog known as Punxsutawney Phil and while letting the little rodent drive offers up a little bit of advice: "Don't drive angry, don't drive angry." Cut off the "don't" and you have yourself a movie title.

Even without knowing this little bit of information Drive Angry is a great title, but a tie-in to Groundhog Day only makes it better. I've embedded the clip from the movie below, the quote in question coming right around the 1:37 mark. Stay tuned later today when I post my full interview with Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer.

The Touchscape Multi-Touch Coffee Table Makes Coffee Fun

We all know that a lot can happen over coffee. But now it is time to change the phrase a little. A lot can now happen over the coffee table. In fact the table can give discussions a guide and get actively involved in conversations. No, the table is not going to do the talking but it can help you in a number of ways. Thanks to the brand new concept of the Multi-Touch Coffee Table from Touchscape.

The concept of the touch screen is pretty well-known now. This very technology has been incorporated into the coffee table. The Multi-Touch Coffee Table has a 47 inch high definition LCD screen incorporated onto its surface. You might have seen something like these being used in movies but it won’t be long before you could run your fingers on one such screen in your very own living room.

This patented MT technology bearing coffee table screen boasts of having an HD 1920 X 1080p resolution. It is capable of tracking as many touches as can be fit on the screen. It has been powered by a Quad Core Processor and the surface configuration can be a Windows 7 touch input device similar to the Microsoft Surface. It can also serve TUIO touch events to be used with SUSHI or multitouch SDK. The unique experience of this table enables you to enjoy applications with your fingertips. Moving around on screen or browsing through photographs was never so easy before.

The processor is ably supported by a 4 GB memory while there is scope for storing a whopping 180 GB. That would take many coffee mugs to discuss all that data. It efficiently supports Bluetooth, Wi Fi, USB and Ethernet. Keeping with the times it is well ready to take on the 3G era in communication.

The ambient light sensor is able to adjust display based on the background lighting conditions. The self monitoring system keeps a watch on the performance by regularly checking for updates which keeps the system moving.

Since it is a coffee table it should be capable enough to support coffee mugs and this it can do with all expertise. The LCD display has features like being scratch resistant, wipe-clean top, and in the worst case replaceable.

Once you have invited guests over for coffee on the Multi-Touch table you are sure to have them visiting again. And you are going to be a beaming host to all.

If you think this is great, you are yet to go through articles on iPhone 4 Table Design and Dining Pool Table.

********LYRICS*********

I was chilling with my BUD, SAM ADAMS.
We get a call from MILLER. The man was having spasms.
He said, "dude get dressed. There's not a chance in hell
That we could miss this keg party up in SAN MIGUEL."

"Do I have to go out, dude?"
"No but that Mexican chick CORONA is there,
And she's been asking about you."
I hung up the phone. Time to get dressed, I
Put on my MAGIC HAT and my shirt with the RED STRIPE.

We hit a BUSCH dodging traffic as we passed by 'em
In that KILLIAN'S RED charger with the FAT TIRE(s).
We drove around for like half the night.
Luckily the BLUE MOON provided NATURAL LIGHT.

We rolled up to the party and everybody was rockin',
Playing BECK'S old single on that iPod dock and
That's where it's at. My ears were all ringing.
The party crowd was getting loud, and everybody started singing:

[inaudible] bottles of beer on the wall.
[inaudible] bottles of beer.
You take one down, you pass it around,
You got [inaudible] bottles of beer on the wall.

Now everyone was crammed in the basement, wasted
Even ASAHI, that foreign exchange kid.
He was just in KINGFISHER, wreckin' his Vette
Like "automobile, big leck!"

I poured myself a brew and drank half the glass
This ugly MOOSEHEAD chick kept grabbing my ass.
I told that HARP that she could go to hell
And then I saw CORONA, and she was looking STELLA.

And down to have some fun, she
Was still a freshman, a YUENGLING with a tongue-ring.
The alcohol was all clouding my thinking,
So I slapped her on the HEINEKEN I get you a drink? And

She said, "ha! You're totally cute.
"If you fetch me a beer, I'll let you touch my boob."
Hell yeah, I went to get her a drink, then
The party started moving, and everybody started singing:

[inaudible] bottles of beer on the wall.
[inaudible] bottles of beer.
You take one down, you pass it around,
You got [inaudible] bottles of beer on the wall.

CORONA'S ex-boyfriend started talking to me
His FOSTER(s) parents nicknamed him MILWAUKEE'S BEST.
'Cause dude was big enough that he could tackle the world.
He was like "Hey Broski, you're jacking my girl.
I should bust your SKOL. You look like a queer, I'm
Gonna challenge you to a game of beer pong."

"Of COORS! Challenge accepted."
You can call me GUINNESS, 'cause I'm touting the record."
Beer pong's my game, and with my shoulder cocked
I bounced that ball in the cup like a ROLLING ROCK.

We played for a while, and I was wooing them when
I showed everyone who'd win the BLUE RIBBON... PABST
And CORONA was like, "wow!
You can totally touch my boob now."

I was EL PRESIDENTE
Or maybe a king with my CORONA
In my NEW CASTLE, and everybody started singing:

[inaudible] bottles of beer on the wall.
[inaudible] bottles of beer.
You take one down, you pass it around,
You got [inaudible] bottles of beer on the wall.

Head-Banging School Band Plays Rage Against The Machine

Foo Fighters Debut New Single Online

By Joseph Oliveto
From  http://beatcrave.com/

foofightersjcoJan42 Foo Fighters Debut New Single Online

With a new album on the way and a major tour in the near future, it’s safe to say that a lot of alt-rock music fans have been interested to see what the Foo Fighters have in store for them. Since the band’s start in the 90s, they’ve risen to rock mega-stardom and asserted their place as one of music’s most popular acts.
Well, today we have our first hint of what we can expect from the upcoming release Wasting Light. The band released the first single off the album, “Rope,” on their official website. Read on to see our thoughts and find out where you can listen to the song for yourself…

It’s not good to judge any song based on an initial reaction, but ours isn’t too enthusiastic. We wouldn’t go so far as to say this is a bad song, but it’s not nearly as heartfelt as “Everlong,” as energetic as “Breakout,” or as fun as “Big Me.” Even the band’s more recent tunes, generic as they may have been, were at least fairly catchy. “Rope,” aside from the production effects at the beginning, could easily be mistaken for a throwaway track from a local garage band trying to bring back grunge. It’s not what we expect from Dave Grohl.

Then again, that’s just how we felt on the first listen, and sometimes the best music is the music that grows on you. We’re certainly not going to write-off the new album yet.

Blizzard Amusement Park "World Joyland" is Real--Dreams Do Come True!

Blizzard Themed Amusement Park

Earlier in February we mentioned that a Blizzard themed amusement park called "World Joyland" may have been in the works and now, thanks to an article in The Huffington Post, we've found out that the rumors are true. The theme park, located in the Wunjin District, China was supposed to open in March, but judging from the few pictures that have been released, it looks like it will take a bit longer, but it seems to be shaping up quite nicely.

The theme park will have five areas: Island of Mystery, Terrain of Warcraft, Universe of StarCraft, World of Legend and Molesworld (that's the kid area). It might as well be called Dream Land, and I've already bought my ticket.

Joyland's website shows off all of the various worlds, but unfortunately it's only available in Chinese. There was also a Chinese news report video released, which shows off the construction of the park. From the video the theme park looks massive, and the few shots of the architecture we've seen do great justice to the concept material. It was rumored earlier that Joyland would include a video game museum and a dedicated e-Sports center.

Here's one picture of Joyland's concept art brought to life. It's a stylized Blood Elf tower from World of Warcraft.

Charlie Sheen Wants to Do Another Major League Sequel

major league 23 6 10 kc Charlie Sheen Wants to Do Another Major League Sequel
Now that Charlie Sheen is on hiatus from his series “Two and a Half Men” he’s been trying to find ways to fill his free time. Most people in his situation would be advised not to speak to the press, but that’s all the actor’s been doing lately. His latest rant is about the developing sequel to the Major League fanchise. Sheen wants the movie to happen, and he wants to reprise his role as Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn.

According to EW, Morgan Creek “currently have a script for another sequel from David Ward, who wrote the screenplay for the original. This time around, the Indians convince Vaughn, Willie Hayes (Wesley Snipes), and Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert) to re-join the team as bench players to help salvage their season, but complications ensue when Vaughn’s long-estranged son, born out of wedlock, joins the team from the minors.” Unfortunately, Corbin Bernsen’s character Roger Dorn won’t be in the mix this time.

When asked about his part in the film, Sheen told TMZ that he’s in negotiations but “they don’t seem to think that I’m as valuable as I do.” Hmm, we wonder why? “Two and a Half Men” isn’t the greatest show on TV, and the actor hasn’t headlined a successful feature film since Scary Movie 3.

Do you want to see another Major League movie? Should Sheen be included?

World's Most Outrageous Construction Projects

Dubai The World

Charting the world's construction projects with the biggest scope and the price tags to match.

From the great pyramids of Egypt to the temples of the Aztecs to the detoxification of Charlie Sheen, man has never shied away from undertaking huge, near-impossible projects.

In the still-young 21st century, this means taller, longer, and with more shopping.

The following list of the world’s largest construction projects was compiled based on environmental impact, cost, and sheer epic scope. Many were planned and started before the worldwide economic recession; some are paying the price, while others may not have been such a bright idea in the first place. If you don’t look too closely, a few of these massive undertakings even seem designed to benefit humanity.

One thing is for sure – they all seem like a massive headache for everyone concerned.

9. Burj Khalifa: The Dubai Tower

HOW MUCH?
US$1.5 billion.
WHAT IS IT?
At 2,717 feet (828 metres) tall the Burj Khalifa, or Burj Dubai, is the world’s tallest building. Construction began in 2004 and ended last year; the skyscraper houses office space and residencies.
THE DOWNSIDE?
The Burj Khalifa’s construction coincided with the global financial crisis, and the government was forced to borrow from its neighbour Abu Dhabi. Like the Olympic Village in Vancouver, a majority of the residences remain vacant.

8. New York City: One World Trade Center

HOW MUCH?
US$3.1 billion.
WHAT IS IT?
One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the U.S. and the main edifice of the new World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan. Construction on the new office building began in 2006 and is expected to be completed by 2012, and ready for occupancy the following year. As you might expect, nearly everything about this building, which is also a memorial to 9/11, has been controversial, including the name; some were referring to it as “the Freedom Tower” but it is now officially One World Trade Center.
THE DOWNSIDE?
Some might wonder whether another towering office building is what’s needed in the area. These people would be left-wing, bleeding-heart wimps.

7. Dubai: Dubailand

HOW MUCH?
Dubai has collected US$6 billion from private investors . . . and that’s just for Phase I (four phases of development are planned).
WHAT IS IT?
Hey, Dubai! Quit showing off! We get it already, you’re an oil-rich country and you don’t know what to do with all that money. But would it kill you to be a little more discreet? At three billion square feet, this is the largest collection of theme parks in the world.
Dubailand is part of Dubai’s effort to diversity from an oil-based economy and expand its tourism industry. When – and if – it is ever completed, the project will include a Legoland, Dreamworks Studios Theme Park, Marvel Superheroes Theme Park and Tiger Woods Dubai (a proposed Tiger Woods-designed golf course and residential development), among other entertainment options.
THE DOWNSIDE?
North American comic-book fans will have to travel thousands of miles to get to the Marvel Superheroes Theme Park.

6. Italy: Strait of Messina Bridge

HOW MUCH?
US$8 billion, including cover charges, two-drink minimums, and “tips.”
WHAT IS IT?
A 3.3-kilometre bridge linking Sicily to the Italian mainland.
THE DOWNSIDE?
The on-again, off-again, on-again project has been plagued with controversy, including fears that much of the money would be diverted to the Sicilian and Calabrian mafias, which control most public works projects in the south of Italy. Prime Minister Berlusconi denies this is the case, saying that if any money is diverted it will be to the country’s population of 18-year-old nightclub dancers.

5. Las Vegas: CityCenter

HOW MUCH?
US$9.2 billion.

WHAT IS IT?

At 16,797,000-square-feet, CityCenter is the largest privately funded construction project in U.S. history. This multi-use plaza ate up the last remaining real estate on the Las Vegas strip. MGM Resorts International began the project – described as “a city within a city” with its hotels, casinos, retail and dining and entertainment facilities – and investment fund Dubai World became an equal partner in an effort. Because the Vegas strip wasn’t gaudy enough.
THE DOWNSIDE?
Since construction began in 2006, six construction workers have died, making CityCenter one of the most lethal projects this side of Spider Man on Broadway.

4. Dubai: The World

HOW MUCH?
US$18 billion, according to a 2005 estimate.
WHAT IS IT?
“The World” is a reproduction of the Earth made out of islands. But why make it? If you’re the ruler of Dubai the question is more like, “Why not?” It was Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s idea to construct a rough shape of the world map using artificial islands, which would then be sold for development (resorts, etc.). The thing is, according to Wikipedia, The World is just “one of several artificial island developments in Dubai,” begging the question of just what it is they’re smoking over there.
THE DOWNSIDE?
As of last year, only a single island had any type of building on it – a show home. All the other projects having been cancelled or delayed either due to the 2008 financial crisis or people coming to their senses. And, while the developer and Dubai government deny it, a participant in a related lawsuit has alleged that the islands are also sinking back into the sea.

3. Soundouping, China: Three Gorges Dam

HOW MUCH?
Over US$22.5 billion by the time the last farmer is displaced.
WHAT IS IT?
The world’s largest hydroelectric power station. When completed in 2012, Three Gorges Dam will supply 10 per cent of China’s energy. The dam also increases the Yangtze River’s shipping capacity and reduces both coal consumption and the potential for flooding.
THE DOWNSIDE?
The dam flooded archaeological and cultural sites and displaced 1.3 million people. It is also causing significant ecological changes, including an increase in the risk of landslides. On the plus side, when the project is completed, workers making Gap clothing for 12 cents per hour will be able to see what they’re doing.

2. Abu Dhabi: Yas Island

HOW MUCH?
US$40 billion.
WHAT IS IT?
A 25-square-mile island resort with a Formula One racetrack, an arena, theme parks (Ferrari World, Warner Bros), three golf courses, polo fields, hotels (seven and counting) and just about anything else you care to name, including an IKEA.
The idea was announced in 2006, and developer Aldar Properties completed Phase I in 2008. Perhaps Aldar, an Abu Dhabi company, felt the need to compete with Dubai, Abu Dhabi’s showier neighbour to the north. There’s no end in sight for the entire project, though 2014 and 2018 have been suggested.

THE DOWNSIDE?

To protect the island’s surrounding ecosystem, Aldar has pledged “support to Emirates Wildlife Society,” plant mangroves and monitor water quality. And we all know how eco-friendly Formula One racetracks are.

1. Outer Space: ISS (International Space Station)

HOW MUCH?
Over $100 billion, making it the most expensive object ever constructed – after Michael Jackson’s nose.
WHAT IS IT?
A space station. Forget about earthbound construction projects and farmers schlepping dirt away to make canals. Sixteen nations have banded together in constructing the ISS in low-earth orbit, where teams of astronauts research cool stuff and eat food out of tubes. In-orbit construction on the ISS began in 1998 and completion is scheduled for the end of this year; it will remain operational until at least 2015.
THE DOWNSIDE?
Critics contend that the time and money spent on the ISS could be better spent on other projects, like robotic spacecraft missions, space exploration, or sending James Cameron to Mars.
