Captain America images leaked online
- By: Ryan Fleming
- From: http://www.digitaltrends.com/
Captain America: The First Avenger isn’t due to hit theaters until June 22, 2011, but filming has begun in England- as have the inevitable leaks that resulted in our first look at Cap in action.
The images leaked online are somewhat unremarkable in terms of story (Cap rides a motorcycle, the Red Skull’s soldiers ride motorcycles, there is probably a chase scene in the movie- cool, but not revealing), but it is the first official look of the costume that we have seen in action. The concept drawings were first leaked back at the beginning of June, but these are the first real shots of Cap in costume. Or at least Cap’s stunt double in costume.
The pictures were obtained by the British newspaper The Daily Mail, who had this to say about the shots:
And today his stunt double was snapped in a leafy London location, dressed in full regalia, riding a US Army Indian motorcycle.
True to the original character, the costume comprised the colours of the American flag, complete with a huge star on the chest, helmet and cape.
There was also a magnificent Forties-style car on set, which was seen being driven through a woodland location, as well as some more futuristic looking motorcycles.
The riders of the futuristic motorcycles appear to have a Red Skull logo on their shoulders, which would make sense.
Captain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans as Cap, Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull, and is being directed by Joe Johnston.

Artists Build Incredible Obelisk Out of Hundreds of Bicycles
from: http://inhabitat.com/

The 10,000 pound, 65 foot-tall behemoth was, strangely enough, built with help from Nissan. Apparently, Santa Rosa’s “1% for art” law requires major construction projects to donate money to public art projects. Nissan is building a dealership in the city, so it chose to contribute cash to the $37,000 piece of artwork.
Regardless of the project’s background, we’re happy to see old bike parts being put to good use. As Spector noted in a statement, “Collecting unusable parts from the debris piles of nonprofit community bike projects has proven to be a win-win; community bike DIY places are thrilled unusable parts are not becoming land fill and the City is psyched the sculpture will solidify Santa Rosa as bike-friendly.”

Mazda Shinari concept - First Look
The world gets its first look at Mazda’s new design language with the unveil of its latest concept – before auto show season begins.
By Matt DeLorenzo
From: http://www.roadandtrack.com/

Photos: Mazda Shinari concept >>
With the Mazda Shinari concept, the Japanese automaker is turning the page on its “flow” inspired Nagare design theme in favor of a new, more dynamic design lexicon called Kodo. Future Mazda products will incorporate the concept’s strong character lines and powerful look, according to Ikuo Maeda, the carmaker’s global head of design.
Some elements of traditional Mazda design cues will be retained, such as the five-point grille and the prominent front fender shape, but the 4-door Shinari embodies a new look that blends sharp character lines with sculpted body shapes to convey a sense of power and elegance.

Based on a hypothetical C/D platform slightly larger than the current Mazda6, the Shinari is a pure design exercise rather than a precursor of a production model. Some of the unique styling touches include the use of satin finish metal accents that frame the bottom of the grille and splay out through the headlamp openings. This strip seems to travel through the wheel arch and re-emerges as a side vent accent. This strip is also indirectly lit when the headlamps are turned on, giving the car a distinctive look in the dark.
In addition to crisp character lines, the overall shape features a pronounced cab rearward proportion. This makes the rear haunch look more powerful, while the long hood and dash-to-axle ratio imparts a sense of speed. The designers’ intent is to make the Shinari look like it’s moving even when it’s standing still.
The cabin features a cockpit layout for the driver with a layered instrument binnacle that sweeps down into the center console, separating the driver from the passenger. The center stack is essentially an open space in which additional controls and the shifter are located. Atop that stack is an auxiliary navigation screen and entertainment systems. Even though the main binnacle in front of the driver is tall, the rest of the cabin has an open, uncluttered appearance enhanced by a glass roof that lets in a lot of light.
Overall, the new Kodo design philosophy is very Italian in its execution, capturing the kind of passion and energy seen in exotic car designs. It’s a look Maeda believes can be used on both passenger sedans like the 6 and future replacements for the MX-5 Miata and RX-8.
Rare 1977 Harrison Ford Interview Emerges
Yesterday, the New York Times posted a story about a rare 1977 Harrison Ford video interview conducted by a Dallas-Fort Worth news channel reporter just as Star Wars (A New Hope) was making waves across the country during its initial release:
Wearing lapels as wide as the Millennium Falcon itself, Mr. Ford actually seems gracious about the budding fantasy franchise and complimentary to its creator, George Lucas, telling his interviewer that though he doesn’t regard himself as the Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon type, the film works because “it’s finally about people and not finally about science, so the energy of the movie goes towards exploring these human relationships.”The interview, which apparently had first been posted to the original reporter’s website bobbiewygant.com back in July (and contains scores of other filmed interviews), presents a rare peek at the actor on the brink of super-stardom in 1977. 16 Food Items That Could Make a Bulimic Fat
From: http://itthing.com/
So bulimia is no joke, we know, but we wanted to make a point that the foods we discovered are so fatty, so laden with lard, calories, and trans fat that it could potentially make anyone obese if they make eating these foods a habit of sorts. Some of these items provide a full days worth of calories, sodium and fat in just a few bites and if that isn’t enough they are often times disguised as ‘healthy’ choices. You might be surprised to see that not all of these come from fast food restaurants either.
McDonald’s Deluxe Breakfast
Starting with one of the more obviously unhealthy places to eat, McDonalds offers a moderate sized breakfast platter that includes eggs, sausage, pancakes (with syrup and margarine), hash browns and a buttermilk biscuit. I say moderate because I have seen average sized men take down 2-3 of these plates as the portions aren’t huge. Chewy sausage, squishy eggs, and crunchy oily hash browns- I can’t see how people palate this stuff, but it’s cheap I suppose if you are in need but definitely not a wise choice.
Total: 1,220 calories, 550 of them from fat, including 17 grams of saturated fat.
Cinnabon Caramel Pecanbon
Another breakfast choice of many, this deliciously sticky roll is nothing more but sugar, lard and flour- sorry to ruin your fantasy. It offers virtually no nutritional value and does nothing but give you a quick sugar high and instant cellulite on your bum.
Total: 1,100 calories and 56 grams of fat
Outback Steakhouse Aussie Cheese Fries
In the mood for a cheesy appetizer or just a quick snack while slugging back a few beers? One of the fattiest items on the menu, this platter of straight fat… err cheese, french fries, bacon, and salt should truly come with a warning. Prepare to feel like crap after eating this- fair warning.
Total: 2,710 calories, 203 grams of fat, 25 grams of saturated fat and 6360 mg of sodium.
Burger King’s Triple Whopper With Cheese
I suppose this must come from peoples demands to have ‘more’ in order to satisfy their appetites but no matter how hungry you are, this burger just isn’t right. Keep in mind that the calorie count below is pre fries and drink!
Total: 1,230 calories and 82 grams of fat including 32 grams of saturated fat.
Subway’s Double Meat Tuna Sandwich
Subway Restaurant, renowned for their low-fat subs and Jared- the fat guy who lost weight eating nothing but Subway sandwiches, is actually home to several unhealthy sandwich choices. The 6-inch Double Meat Classic Tuna, which has extra meat, extra mayo, and extra cheese, has far too many calories and fat to be called a wise choice by anyone unfortunately.
Total: 790 calories, 55 grams of fat, including 16 grams of saturated fat.
Taco Bell Fiesta Taco Salad
A salad you might think would be the better option to order at taco bell, but you would be fooled if you think this dish of tasty greens is anything healthy. Have a bean burrito instead and save yourself the heart ache- literally.
Total: 860 calories, 46 grams of total fat, 14 grams of saturated fat
Baskin Robbin’s Large Oreo Chocolate Shake
A simple summertime treat- a yummy Oreo chocolate shake from Baskin Robbins is too good to pass up on a hot day. Sure we all know ice cream isn’t the best thing in the world- but it certainly doesn’t seem like the worst right? Wrong! This is why kids are overweight these days- put a health warning on it for parents, please!
Total: 2600 Calories: 2600, 135 grams of fat, 59 grams of saturated fat and 1700 mg of sodium.
Macaroni Grill Spaghetti and Meatballs with Meat Sauce
Spaghetti and meatballs seems like a fairly normal meal and in comparison to a triple cheese burger, would seem like a much better options- noodles, marinara, and a little beef sounds like nice meal. Better look out with this dish however- I am not even sure how it’s even possible to get the number of calories here as the plate doesn’t weigh in at 10 pounds- they must use a pound of butter and retain the meats fat for flavor… just gross. You really might want to skip the bread and butter beforehand.
Total: 2430 Calories, 128 grams of fat, and 5290 mg of sodium.
Uno Chicago Grill’s Pizza Skins
Indeed I realize I am upsetting many football fans here as these fun appetizers are perfect for parties and munching on while watching sports, but sorry to say these little guys have more fat and calories than a whole pizza.
Total: 2400 Calories, 155 grams of fat, 50 grams of saturated fat, and 3600 mg of sodium
Outback Steakhouse Baby Back Ribs – Full Rack
Ah, the ribs! So finger licking good, and with each lick you probably gain a pound. More fat than quality meat, this rib dish is meant to be shared. Sing it with me folks- “I want my ‘old bootie back, bootie back, bootie back”.
Total: 2260 Calories
Cheesecake Factory Carrot Cake
We have all made the mistake in thinking a dessert made with carrots must be a healthier choice than sweet, creamy cheesecake, but you’d be wrong… really wrong.
Total: 1,560 calories and 84g of fat
Domino’s ExtravaganZZa Feast deep-dish Pizza
No surprise here that pizza makes the list and this Dominos Meat Pie is by far the worst choice. A large thick crust topped with pepperoni, ham, green pepper, onion, black olives, mushrooms, sausage, beef and extra cheese explains why this meal should be shared by a large crowd.
Total: 430 calories, 23 grams of fat and 8 grams of saturated fat PER SLICE
Poutine
The French Canadian side dish of choice, Poutine is just a heart attack waiting, especially when served with a hamburger and a shake. Pronounced “Pooh-teen,” this dish consists of fries, cheese curds and copious amounts of gravy. Yum!
Total: 1,300 Calories and 72 grams of fat
The Big Texan’s 72 Oz Steak
In Amarillo Texas there is a neat steak house in which you can order a 72 ounce steak- 4.5 pounds of meat (and if you eat the entire thing within an hour- you get it free). I can honestly say, I have been there and seen this thing- it looks like a giant cow butt in its raw form and a bit less intimating cooked. I can’t imagine many people make this a regular part of their diet, but even eating just one of these meals, there are enough grams of fat to meet your intake allowance for the week.
Approximate total: 5,760 Calories and 480 Grams of fat.
Heart Attack Grill’s Quadruple Bypass Burger
I am at a loss for words here… truly. This burger from Heart Attack Grill might as well be a cow on a stick.
Approximate Total: 8,000 calories, 60 grams of fat.
Beer Barrel Belly Buster- the World’s Largest Burger
OK, so no one really would eat the whole thing- we would hope, but if you do want to give it a try, you might want to prepare ahead of time.
Total: Weighing in a about 15.5 pounds with 11.5 pounds of beef, estimated calories: 25000+
Pedal-Powered Washing Machine Gets Big Company Backing
by Jaymi Heimbuch
from: http://www.treehugger.com/
Photo via Gizmag
Bike-powered washing machines aren't a new idea; however, at least one big appliance company is backing up the idea. Haier, an large electronics company out of China, showed off a human-powered washing machine concept at IFA 2010. It's fairly simple -- an exercise bike collects energy as the person pedals, and the charging battery then powers the washing machine. Supposedly 20 minutes of work is enough to wash one load of clothes on cold cycle. The idea of using human power to get off grid even a little bit is tempting -- and of course gyms are becoming quick to harness the power of people exercising. But could it work at home?
Gizmag writes, "The rationale behind Haier's IFA display is that, like almost every major electronics manufacturer, it's keen to make consumers aware of its environmental commitment...That's not to say that the human-powered washer is a total gimmick. Haier told us that it is gauging consumer response at the show and might consider bringing the idea to market."
Even with a big company looking at pushing it forward, whether or not someone would bring this into their home is up in the air. I can see it being like one of those NordicTrack systems that seem so brilliant around the holidays when we're keen to loose a couple pounds but loses its shine a couple weeks later. After all, the Cyclean hasn't exactly taken off in the last four years.
But I have to say, as someone who likes to cycle for exercise and multitask, I'd definitely consider something like this. It'd not only save me money from the energy bill each month, but I'd be able to quit my gym and save money there too. Not a bad deal. And I'd be forced to exercise since being lazy means no clean clothes.
Even with Haier's backing, it seems very unlikely to be popular if it makes it to market. Plus, the bigger environmental issue with washing machines isn't their energy use but their water use. A bike-powered system would be better suited for the clothes dryer portion of a wash load.
Would you use it? Or better yet, would you convert your existing washing machine to run on pedal power?
