Purchasing an auto insurance is one of the most important aspects to consider while buying a car. While some amongst us have the few extra bucks to throw outta the window, a vast majority of the us dont live a life with that kind of luxury. Often times, your love for that dream car blinds you from the monthly bills that pile up in your mailbox, and by the time you realize that you simply cannot afford to make those payments, you’re in a deep pile of s***. Hence, you might be doing yourself a favor by researching this often overlooked factor, and Insure.com’s list of the most and least expensive vehicles sure does play its part in helping you make a decision.

According to the report, the Porsche Carrera GT2 two-door coupe, with an average national premium of $2,943.78, is the proud winner of the bragging rights for being the most expensive vehicle to insure among all the 2010 models. Coming in second is the Mercedes S65 AMG at an avg national premium of $2863.03, while the Dodge Viper SRT-10 coupe, Porsche Panamera Turbo AWD and Dodge Viper SRT-10 convertible round off the top five positions in the most expensive vehicles to insure list.

If you’re surprised to see the likes of Bentley and Lamborghini missing from the list, Insure.com states that all the models were not available for the rate comparisons during its research. Hard luck there!

At the other end of the spectrum is the Mazda Tribute I (2WD four-door SUV) — the least expensive vehicle to insure in 2010. The 2010 Dodge Caliber takes the distinction of being the least expensive car to insure, while the GMC Canyon WT (2WD 2 Door 2.9L) is the least expensive pickup to insure. The family-oriented Honda Odyssey LX (5 Door 2WD SOHC) comes across as the least expensive minivan to insure.

In order to provide these results, Insure.com commissioned a study from Quadrant Information Services that calculated the average premiums for a 40-year old male driver, using car insurance rates from six of the most prominent insurance carriers (State Farm, Allstate, Progressive, GEICO, Farmers and Nationwide) in 10 ZIP codes per state. Rates are calculated based on a 12 mile commute to work, and policy limits of $100,000 for injury liability for one person, $300,000 for all injuries and $50,000 for property damage in an accident, along with a $500 deductible on collision and comprehensive coverage.

Kim Hazelbaker, senior vice president of the Highway Loss Data Institute (division of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), remarked that the profile of the average person who drives a particular model is a major factor in influencing the average premiums for a vehicle, as the pricing for collision and comprehensive coverage were based on the model’s “loss history”. For instance, a twenty-something male driving a small car is more prone to a higher insurance, than a “soccer mom” who is considered to be a safer driver.

He further added that car insurance rates tend to rise with horsepower. “ The [600hp] Carrera is a race car in street clothing. And they’re being driven on occasion by people using this horsepower. And these are expensive vehicles, $100,000 and up, so if you have a total loss, that’s a big factor [in insurance rates],” he said.

Recycled Pizza Boxes Hungry For a Bigger Slice of the Market

New York, NY — The Green Box pizza box, made of recycled cardboard and designed to reduce waste, has been picked up for nationwide distribution by FoodBizSupply.com.

The Green Box, created by E.C.O. Inc., looks like any other pizza box, but it contains 100 percent recycled content. Because recycling centers do not take paper or cardboard that is soiled by food, they do not accept pizza boxes. The Green Box takes a type of packaging that would get throw away anyway and turns it into something with a second purpose.

The top of the box is perforated so that it can be torn into 4 squares - to use instead of paper plates or dishes that would need to be washed - and the bottom can be folded in half for storing pizza instead of using aluminum foil or containers.

FoodBizSupply.com is an online distributor that focuses on products with a sustainable side to them, and is the latest addition to Green Box's distribution network.

"They have a very wide, broad range of customers," said William Walsh, founder and CEO of E.C.O. "It's a different level of customer, too. It's a customer that is much more socially aware, so I feel the partnership and having distribution through FoodBizSupply is going to be key to our business."

The Green Box is also being distributed to Italian restaurants through Roma Foods, and through the northeast U.S. by Mansfield Paper and Imperial Bag and Paper.

Walsh said he is searching for other nationwide distributors, and that a major organic grocer, which he could not name, is using the Green Box on a regional basis. In addition, two of the top pizza chains are conducting tests and market research on the box.

Green Box's website will be getting a facelift soon, Walsh said, and will include a way for people to find restaurants and pizza shops that use the Green Box, as well as a way for restaurants to find Green Box distributors.

NFL Considering Changes to Playoff Overtime

The annual NFL owners meeting will kick off this coming Sunday. One of the issues on the table will be altering overtime rules for the postseason. Under the new proposal, each team would be given one possession. If the score is still tied after that, overtime will continue under sudden-death rules.

This change would apply to the playoffs only, not the regular season. In order for it to go through, 24 votes are needed. Evidently, better kickers and return men have shifted the statistics in favor of the team that wins the coin toss.

“Changes occurred over time, and the numbers have changed to 59.8 percent winning the coin toss and winning the game. The team that loses the coin toss wins 38.5 percent. We are trying to put in a system that emphasizes more skill and strategy as opposed to the randomness of the coin flip.”

Personally, I have no problem with the current system. As the old adage says, defenses get paid too. If one team can’t stop the other, then they deserve to lose. That being said, I do think the change would bring a new level of excitement to the playoffs, which are already pretty damn thrilling.

Will it pass? I’d put the chances at about 50/50. Owners are often resistant to rocking the boat. However, if they feel it can improve the viewing experience and competitiveness, they will pull the trigger. Stay tuned for the answer sometime next week.

Canadian Movie Pirate ‘maVen’ Sent To Jail

Geremi Adam, a member of the movie release group ‘maVen’ has been sentenced to two and a half months in prison. The 27 year-old Montreal resident, who was referred to the Canadian police by the FBI, pleaded guilty to distributing two major motion pictures.

Half a decade ago ‘maVen‘ was one of the most active movie release groups on the Internet, known for distributing high quality ‘Telesync‘ versions of major blockbuster titles. In the summer of 2006 ‘maVen’ releases suddenly halted, and it later became apparent that the FBI had caught one of its key members.

An FBI investigation into ‘maVen’ had been running for some time and was handed to the Canadian Police in April 2006. A few months later Geremi Adam was arrested after he allegedly recorded the movies “How to Eat Fried Worms” and “Invincible” at a Montreal movie theater.

They seized his laptop and other equipment and later released him, only for him to be arrested again at another theater just a month later. According to the police, Adam had been selling copies of movies on the Internet using the alias ‘maVen,’ which were then re-sold on the web and the streets.

Following Adam’s arrest came a 14 month wait as the police combed computer systems and equipment looking for evidence to convict him. The FBI had labeled him the ‘World Leader’ in Internet piracy and his case went before court several months later.

Today the verdict came in, and the Court sentenced Adam to two and a half months in prison – the prosecution had demanded four. The defense lawyer had argued for community service because Adam suffers from depression and a troubled childhood, but despite these arguments, the Court decided to opt for a prison sentence.

As of today there are still dozens of ‘maVen’ releases available on BitTorrent, although most of these files have no active downloaders anymore.

Forget Taxing Marijuana; The Real Money's In Cocaine

A Harvard economist has estimated how much money states would raise by legalizing and taxing marijuana and cocaine.

In a podcast a while back, Harvard's Jeffrey Miron told us that his estimates for what California would bring in from taxing marijuana are much smaller than some of the numbers that are floating around out there (including a $1.4 billion estimate from state officials).

Since that interview, Miron has come out with a paper estimating, among other things, potential tax revenues from cocaine and marijuana.

It turns out the big tax money is in cocaine.

Sure, legalizing marijuana is highly unlikely and legalizing cocaine isn't even on the table in mainstream politics. Still, it's interesting to know what the numbers would be -- particularly when they're coming from a Harvard economist.

Here's a table that shows Miron's estimates for the annual tax revenues each state would get from marijuana and cocaine. (The figures are in millions; for more details, see the explanation and links after the table.)

On top of state revenues, Miron estimates that a federal taxes would amount to $4.28 billion for marijuana and $12.47 billion for cocaine.

Miron figures taxes on the drugs would be comparable to taxes on alcohol and tobacco. His estimates for how many people in each state use marijuana and cocaine are based on a government survey. (He notes that the number of users would likely rise if the drugs were legalized, but his estimates don't account for this.) He estimates that if marijuana and cocaine were legalized, their prices would fall by 50% and 80%, respectively. Fastest Book Scanner Ever Captures Flipping Pages with High-Speed Camera

A new super-fast book-scanning technology could make publishers cringe even more than when they heard about Google Book Search. A University of Tokyo researcher has developed a "book flipping scanning" method that does exactly what it sounds like, digitizing 200 pages per minute, according to IEEE Spectrum. The Japanese researchers hope to enable a digital library for Japanese manga comics.

The scanner's camera runs at 500 frames per second, and captures rapidly flipping book pages in two modes. First, a regular line shines on the page to capture text and images. The second mode then manages neat the trick of reconstructing the curved, distorted pages in their original form. A laser device projects lines onto each page that the system can use to recreate the 3-D page model and correct the deformed lines.

Google's own proprietary book-scanning technology seems to use some sort of infrared camera to capture the 3-D shape of book pages, but the book lies flat and the page-turning mechanism is unclear. Other book scanners boast of capturing about 50 pages per minute, which is four times slower than the new method.

Masatoshi Ishikawa -- the University of Tokyo researcher behind the book-scanning marvel -- previously developed the fastest robot hands in the East, so he's probably not too worried about tiring out human hands by flipping book pages.

Miniaturized versions of this technology could eventually find their way into our smartphones for completely legal digitizing delights. Or it might combine with the robot hands to bring Short Circuit's Johnny 5 to life.

Affectionately known as the "world's greatest job," tanning butler duties include strolling around the luxury hotel pool and rubbing attractive people (and presumably unattractive people, but let's not think about that) with complimentary Hampton Sun products from 12pm to 4pm.

The tanning butlers wear signature "Tanning Butler" t-shirts -- so don't believe that guy in a Speedo who's pretending to be a hotel employee -- and are armed with various SPFs, Evian spritzers and sunglasses cleaner in a custom-made holster.

"Good afternoon, I'm the Tanning Butler," they've been instructed to say. "Can I offer you some complimentary sunscreen? If you like, I can apply it to your back and shoulders that might burn easily, as well."

In my fantasy, that line is delivered with a very sexy accent. I hope the Ritz-Carlton's HR department is reading this.

"This modern twist on the English butler is beyond guests' expectations," says Michelle Payer, creator of The Tanning Butler. "It's a light-hearted service we created to cater to our guests as they sunbathe by providing an unexpected, luxury service they won't see anywhere else in the world."

An added perk of the profession? Celebrity rubbing. Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey, Johnny Knoxville and Vivica A. Fox are just a few names the Ritz-Carlton, South Beach claims to have tanned.
