2009 Callaway Corvette- Bridges the Gap for relatively short Money

CORONA, California — Callaway Cars has introduced its 2009 Callaway Corvette, a supercharged 580-horsepower version of the Chevrolet Corvette C6. An $18,900 package of equipment is installed at Callaway Cars that makes the car capable of more than 200 mph. "The Callaway Corvette slots right between the 505-hp Corvette Z06 and the 638-hp Corvette ZR1," notes Reeves Callaway, the founder of Callaway Cars.

Celebrating 20 years of Callaway Corvettes, the company recently opened a 27,000-square-foot facility in Corona, California, to supplement the company's headquarters in Old Lyme, Connecticut. The West Coast operation will assemble the 650-hp Callaway C16.

The 6.2-liter GM LS3 V8 of the 2009 Callaway Corvette features an Eaton supercharger, a fuel system with high-flow injectors, an air-to-liquid intercooler and a special air inlet. It produces 580 hp and 265 pound-feet of torque. The car is visually distinguished by the same hood used for the Callaway C16. A full range of options includes suspension, brakes and wheel-and-tire packages.

When equipped with a manual transmission, the 2009 Callaway Corvette is capable of accelerating to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.5 seconds and will reach the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds at 124.0 mph. A top speed of 204 mph is possible, Callaway claims.

The basic package that converts a standard Corvette C6 into a 2009 Callaway Corvette is installed at Callaway Cars for a price of $18,900. The car is emissions-legal in all 50 states and carries a three-year/36,000-mile warranty.

Inside Line says: Maybe you don't have to get in line for a $100,000 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 after all. —
