The Gruesome Origins of 5 Popular Fairy Tales

Back then, a good fairy tale was one that could scar you forever. By those standards, these were the five best.

We know what's you're thinking. "What the hell is Cracked writing articles about fairy tales for? That's kids stuff! Give us more articles about the Top 10 Transformers Characters, or Worst Dressed Thundercat!" And that's good, because that means our Spyware technology is getting better than ever.

The thing about fairy tales, though, is that they weren't always for kids. Back when these stories were first told around campfires and in taverns in some medieval village there were very few kids present. These were racy, violent parables to distract peasants after a hard day's dirt farming, and some of them made Hostel look like, well, kid's stuff.

License To Thrill: Dress Like James Bond

Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale

7 Gadgets James Bond Wishes He Had, we looked at some brilliant little devices for all you wannabe secret agents! Now we’re going to take it a step further and make sure that you look the part too.

James Bond has been the epitome of style and looking good since Roger Moore became the third man to portray 007 in Live and Let Die in 1973. However, for the modern man this is simply not practical on a day to day basis. That being said, we’re going to look at the fashion and style of James Bond in the latest movie, Casino Royale.

If you’re anything like me, you were appalled when you heard that Daniel Craig was unveiled as the new Bond…..until your saw the film and hailed him as your new hero. He was the most bad-ass Bond I’ve ever seen and the most similar to the modern man.

Get The ‘Daniel Craig’ Bond Look

Because I am such a huge fan of the man’s man James Bond portrayed by Daniel Craig, I’ve put together a few of my favourite articles of clothing that make up the ‘Daniel Craig’ Bond look.

The first item I want to mention comes with a stipulation – you need to read my How To Improve Your Physique Without Lifting Weights and start incorporating the exercises into your routines. Also, you should visit this site for loads of fitness tips to get lean and toned.

Those Blue Swimming Shorts – La Perla ‘Grigioperla’

James Bond in skimpy blue shorts

As mentioned, you need to have a fantastic physique to even attempt these shorts on the beach. If you don’t have the body then don’t even try to pull this look off. You won’t manage it. If you follow my suggested resources for a few months religiously, you can start to think about wearing these. If you have the body, these shorts will have the women literally dribbling and falling over themselves to talk to you! You can get them from the following places:

www.lebralingerie.com
www.glamonweb.co.uk
www.ebay.com

The Sunspel Blue Polo Shirt

James Bond in a Sunspel Polo shirt

This polo shirt is an absolutely classic look which provides a fitted and retro look. Assuming you followed the resources mentioned above to look good in those shorts, you should look equally hunky in this tight fitting polo. Your arms will look powerful and strong, your chest broad and manly. The cuts and bruises pictured are optional extras should you decide to engage in secret agent type activities! You can get this shirt from the Sunspel website. You can also get the grey crewneck and white v-neck t-shirts worn by Bond during the movie.

This understated and elegant style is timeless and will look good whatever the occasion.

James Bonds’ Shoes – John Lobb ‘Luffield’ Shoes

James Bond Luffield John Lobb shoes

Elegant, stylish, understated. These shoes epitomise everything that is James Bond. With the right suit, these shoes can transform you from a normal bloke into a sophisticated man. They don’t come cheap though. John Lobb shoes retail anywhere from £500 upwards. You can find out more information on these shoes at www.johnlobb.com. (Choose your country, then Ready To Wear, then Derby, then Prestige and finally choose the Luffield shoe. I hate flash websites by the way!)

Obviously, if you’re James Bond, money is no object. Us mortals, however, may need to find a cheaper alternative.

Magnoli Clothiers provide bespoke and custom made shoes at an affordable price and guess what? They have created their own “Royale Shoes” to emulate the Luffield style.

Casino Royale replica shoes

The cost to you is a much more affordable $310 (approximately £156) and they look identical to the untrained eye.

The James Bond Suit

Now unless you’ve got a spare £2,500 (approximately $5,000) to spend on a Brioni suit, you’re not going to get the exact Bond style in your suit. Luckily, our friends over at Magnoli Clothiers have come up trumps again by creating a couple of James Bond inspired items for a much more reasonable price.

Casino Royale replica suit

The Goldfinger Royale suit is similar to the suit worn by Daniel Craig at the end of Casino Royale, and is based on the classic Goldfinger suit donned by Sean Connery all those years ago. It’s very stylish, very sexy and very affordable at $499 (approx £252).

They also offer a pair of 007 inspired trousers (pants) at an incredibly affordable $89 (a mere £45 in real money!).

007 Replica trousers (pants)

Casino Royale Evening Shirt And Bow tie

The final item is the shirt and bow tie. For this, we’re going to recommend that you pay the full price for the authentic item, simply because a shirt and bow tie are two of the most visible elements in your attire and they need to look fantastic.

Limited Collection James Bond shirt and bow tie

Every actor that has portrayed James Bond on the big screen has invariable worn shirts and ties by the world renowned shirt makers Turnbull & Asser. Daniel Craig donned their attire in his Bond debut and it makes perfect sense that if you too are looking to emulate the Bond look then you should wear only the best.

The “Limited Collection” shirt is made from a super fine, two fold, white-on-white cotton. Using a classic silhouette, the shirt has been designed with a unique collar, specifically designed by Turnbull & Asser, which is featured in the film. Further subtle details can be found including the mitred double cuffs and concealed front placket which, stylishly, hide the mother of pearl buttons underneath. The bow tie is made from raw Shantung silk, giving extra texture and a wonderful handle and tactility when touching the bow tie.

This shirt and bow tie will add an air of sophistication to any modern man’s wardrobe and for me it is a “must have” item.

The price, surprisingly, is a very respectable and affordable £245 ($485). A small price to pay for looking fabulous.

So there you have it. Looking like James Bond has never been as accessible, affordable and enjoyable as it is in the modern world. You don’t have to be dressed up in a monkey suit anymore to be James Bond. Daniel Craig is the man’s man James Bond. He’s badass, sexy, and as Vesper says in the film, he “wears his suit with such disdain.”

In short, he’s every normal red blooded man on the planet (albeit with a seemingly limitless clothing budget, government funded training and access to the most amazing gadgets known to man!).

So what are you waiting for? Add these items to your wardrobe and Dress To Thrill today!

The Art Of Flirting (And How To Do It)

flirt.jpg

A lot of men struggle with the basic concept of flirting. I’ve seen it myself with friends looking to hook up with a girl in a bar who tried everything in their tired and clichéd arsenal of pick up lines. Believe it or not, the following quote is not going to help you get the girl:

My love for you is like diarrhea, I just can’t hold it in.

Source: CO-ED Magazine

The main problem guys have with flirting is that they relate it directly to sex. If I flirt with the girl for long enough, she’s more likely to have sex with me. Women, on the other hand, view flirting as nothing more than some harmless fun with no determined end-game.

The differences between male and female flirting

if we were in a cave, the man would fling the woman over his shoulder and stomp away.

Dutch-born psychoanalyst Manfred Kets de Vries blames the male super-ego. “A man behaving selfishly will ignore the implicit conduct of flirting in the blatant pursuit of sex.” He’s basically saying that if we were in a cave, the man would fling the woman over his shoulder and stomp away.

As far as human behaviours are concerned, flirting is the one that confuses us most. According to evolutionary psychologists flirting is man’s way of engaging pleasurably with a member of the opposite sex, with the ultimate goal of reproduction. Now call me crazy, but most men looking to pick up a girl are not thinking about having children with the woman! Regardless, women view flirting as a way of checking out the merchandise without compromising their virtue. So women use flirting to get attention, and men use it to initiate sex - but how do you untangle this web of crossed wires?

The key to flirting successfully

You’d think that common sense might help you to flirt more successfully, but you’d be wrong. And here’s why. Dr Antonio Darmasio, MD and head of neurology at the University of Iowa, claims that the reason it all goes wrong is because the process of flirting actually mimics brain damage. “The limbic system, responding to a cue that says ‘this person is attractive’, overrides the neo-cortex. Therefore, for a brief moment, we are completely out of control.” Now this quote won’t hold up in court should you ever get too out of control with a girl but it does explain why we struggle to flirt.

Understanding the brain’s response to flirting should help us to engage with women on their level, rather than as a covert operation to get naked with her! Here are some ideas for flirting successfully without coming across like a sex-crazed lunatic:

  • Keep contact to a minimum. Nothing is more powerful in the flirting world than well-timed and placed body contact. Touching a woman should be the same as using your Diesel Fuel For Life aftershave. Use With Caution! If you overdo it, you’ll appear overbearing and creepy. The best times to engage physical contact are when you’re standing together or when putting her coat on. When standing together you can lean in close and place your hand on the small of hear back, as if you were telling her a secret. Putting her coat on at the end of the evening allows you to lift her hair up over the back of her coat. Very subtle and sensual but she will notice.
  • Avoid over-confidence. If you’ve got all the right words and know exactly what to say to get her interested in you, there is a danger that she’ll take you as one of those slippery guys who have played women one too many times. She’ll be imagining you as the guy who flirts for sport and prefers the thrill of the chase to the catch. I’ve known a few of these cads myself and although he was successful with the women, it never amounted to more than a one night stand. That’s not being a man at all.
  • Don’t play it too cool. Some guys prefer to take the ‘mysterious and cool’ approach by appearing dark and brooding from afar. This is all well and good but be aware than you have a limited window of opportunity to talk to her before you turn into the weird stalker who won’t stop looking at her. Another downside to this method is the tendency to sit and watch as other guys attempt to talk to the object of your affection. Don’t sit and sulk in the corner giving the death stare to any man who dares talk to your woman. You’ll come across as jealous and lacking in self confidence. Both unbecoming character traits. Instead, enjoy your evening and when she is available, just head over and talk to her. It’s really not rocket science!
  • Don’t flirt with every girl in the bar. Women talk. With their friends and with strangers at the bar or in the toilet. Find a girl you’re interested in and focus on her. If it doesn’t work out then you might need to move on to the next place to find somebody else. Women will be extremely wary of a man who she has seen talking to other women in the club. You may be a masterful flirt, but you’re seeking an audience and in the end you’re only amusing yourself and are not really that interested in any of the women. They’ll pick up on it and before you know it you’ll be known as the annoying guy who sends dirty text messages an hour after meeting someone in a bar.
  • Technology and it’s impact on flirting

Technology has added an entirely new dimension to the flirting game. You can now use text, e-mail and instant messenger to flirt, but you find yourself trying to become a wordsmith to formulate the perfect combination of words. It’s now a digital minefield as well. However, I think that if used correctly, communicating in this way can help you to become more successful. Here’s why:

    • You have time to think about your message. Rather than being put on the spot in a face-to-face setting, you have time to put together a message or a reply without having to do it immediately. This removes the pressure and allows you to flirt more effectively.
    • You can be more open via text. Things you would never dare to say in person can now be said through a message. The beauty of this is that if she takes it the wrong way you can say it was a joke but the message didn’t convey the sarcastic tone intended (yes, I have used that before to get out of an inappropriate text) or you can be a little unscrupulous and just never speak to her again.
    • What you say in text messages often becomes what you say in real life. Back in the single days I was a bit of a master at the whole text flirting game, regularly with 4 or 5 women texting me at any given time. As my confidence grew, I found there was a great deal of transference from my text game to my face-to-face game. I was more open, more outrageous and more confident and the end result was that approaching women was easier and more successful than ever before.
    • Now, obviously I’m not a psychologist or psychoanalyst but I am a self-taught flirt with a lot of experience and a lot of success. My final advice to you is to flirt wherever you can. Build up your confidence talking to waitresses, barmaids, checkout girls, or even your friends mother! There’s no harm in flirting and it will boost your confidence so that when you meet someone you really like, you know what to do.

If you’ve had some great flirting experiences or know a method that’s worked wonders for you in the past, then let us know in the comments.

Must Watch: Brand New Get Smart Trailer!

Get Smart Trailer

A brand new trailer for Get Smart has finally debuted. I talked extensively about how awesome this was in my WonderCon coverage, and now it's finally here! Get Smart stars Steve Carell as Agent 86 and Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 and is based on the classic Mel Brooks TV show. This looks amazingly hilarious! I know I say that a lot, but this time I'm 100% there. Steve Carell looks like he's going to pull off Maxwell Smart almost better than Don Adams, and even Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson looks hilarious. And did I mention Anne Hathaway is smokin' hot? Especially in those cute pink undies… Now I'm think you really NEED to watch this!

Watch the new trailer for Get Smart:

You can also watch the Get Smart trailer in High Definition at Apple

Get Smart is directed by comedic mastermind Pete Segal, who previously directed Naked Gun 33 1/3, Tommy Boy, Anger Management and 50 First Dates. The script was writen by Tom J. Astle (Failure to Launch) and Matt Ember (Failure to Launch). The movie is based on the classic 1960's TV show created by Mel Brooks. Get Smart hits theaters everywhere this summer on June 20th.

Google Gives All SF Homeless Free Voicemail

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Google has made an announcement that could help hundreds of homeless people in San Francisco get back on their feet.

Every single homeless person in the city will be given a life-long phone number and voicemail, should they choose to accept it, NBC11's Lisa Bernard said.

SLIDESHOW: SF, Google Give Free Voicemail, Phone Numbers To Homeless Google is partnering with San Francisco to provide the service to homeless individuals and to shelters and agencies so they can distribute the numbers to their clients.

The announcement was made at a Project Homeless Connect event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium Wednesday.

A homeless person will be able to call in for his or her messages from any phone.

The move by the city and the company would allow someone to be able to fill out a job application, which asks for a call back number.

It will allow clinics to share test results.

Mayor Gavin Newsom and Google said they want to empower people.

"How do you communicate as a homeless individual? " Newsom asked. "How do you expect your life to turn around if you can't even get information or if someone can't even get in touch with you?"

"It just seems exactly like any other voice mail," said Craig Walker, senior project manager of Google. "There's no stigma attached to it that 'hey this is a temporary thing' or 'this is an 800 number.' It's really just a local number owned by the user."

One man who used to be homeless said the right message can raise the spirit.

"Having your family, friends and loved ones being able to say 'here I'm thinking about you, I love you, I want you to know you're mine, and I miss you,' can have a monumental change in one's behavior."

Providing phone and messaging capabilities and access to vital healthcare is an extraordinary step forward in the city?s commitment to a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of this vulnerable community,? Newsom said.

We're firm believers in the power of technology to improve the daily lives of individuals and communities as a whole, and we recognize that access to phone and voicemail services is one way that Google can help San Francisco's homeless stay connected with family, friends, social workers, health care providers, and potential employers," Walker said.

Walker said the program was ready to start right away.

Users can record their own greetings, and no indication is given to callers that the service is different from any other voicemail system.

If the program is successful in San Francisco the plan is to offer it to homeless people in cities across the state and country.

Homeless clients received phone service as part of their Project CARE (Communications and Respect for Everybody) cases.

The California Pacific Medical Center also launched its pilot program that offered free mammograms to homeless women at the same event.

By DAVE MASTERS

Published: 27 Feb 2008

SQUEAMISH readers might want to look away now as we unveil the world's first ever EYEBALL TATTOO.

The freaky procedure was carried out to turn a body-art fan's eye blue.

And it took FORTY insertions of the needle to get the job done.

Volunteer Pauly Unstoppable, from Canada, has perfect vision but jumped at the chance to be the first punter.

See the toe-curling shots in the gallery below. But be warned - the pictures are very graphic.

Brave Pauly said he had full confidence in the team working on him - but urged people not to try it at home.

He added: "The procedure was extensively researched and done by people who were aware of the risks and possible complications and that it should not be casually attempted.

"Now that this experiment has been started, please wait for us to either heal or go blind before trying it."

What the hell was he inking?

Blind Irishman sees with the aid of son's tooth in his eye

Thu Feb 28, 1:30 AM ET

An Irishman blinded by an explosion two years ago has had his sight restored after doctors inserted his son's tooth in his eye, he said on Wednesday.

Bob McNichol, 57, from County Mayo in the west of the country, lost his sight in a freak accident when red-hot liquid aluminium exploded at a re-cycling business in November 2005.

"I thought that I was going to be blind for the rest of my life," McNichol told RTE state radio.

After doctors in Ireland said there was nothing more they could do, McNichol heard about a miracle operation called Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis (OOKP) being performed by Dr Christopher Liu at the Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton in England.

The technique, pioneered in Italy in the 1960s, involves creating a support for an artificial cornea from the patient's own tooth and the surrounding bone.

The procedure used on McNichol involved his son Robert, 23, donating a tooth, its root and part of the jaw.

McNichol's right eye socket was rebuilt, part of the tooth inserted and a lens inserted in a hole drilled in the tooth.

The first operation lasted ten hours and the second five hours.

"It is pretty heavy going," McNichol said. "There was a 65 percent chance of me getting any sight.

"Now I have enough sight for me to get around and I can watch television. I have come out from complete darkness to be able to do simple things," McNichol said.

Exchange Student Starved With Host Family

Maine Teenager Returns Home At 97 Pounds

Jonathan McCullum was in perfect health at 155 pounds when he left last summer to spend the school year as an exchange student in Egypt.See Photos But when he returned home to Maine just four months later, the 5-foot-9 teenager weighed a mere 97 pounds and was so weak that he struggled to carry his baggage or climb a flight of stairs. Doctors said he was at risk for a heart attack.

McCullum says he was denied sufficient food while staying with a family of Coptic Christians, who fast for more than 200 days a year, a regimen unmatched by other Christians.

But he does not view the experience as a culture clash. Rather, he said, it reflected mean and stingy treatment by his host family, whose broken English made it difficult to communicate.

"The weight loss concerned me, but I wanted to stick out the whole year," he said in an interview at his family's home outside Augusta.

Friends and teachers at his English-speaking school in Egypt urged him to change his host family, but he stayed put after being told the other home was in a dangerous neighborhood of Alexandria.

After returning to the U.S., he was hospitalized for nearly two weeks. The 17-year-old has regained about 20 pounds, but his parents say he's not the same boy he was when he left under the auspices of AFS Intercultural Programs.

"He was outgoing, a straight-A student, very athletic. Now, he's less spontaneous and more subdued," said his mother, Elizabeth McCullum, who was shocked when she met her son at the airport on Jan. 9 and saw he had lost one-third his weight.

Jonathan McCullum's parents said the exchange program should have warned them that students placed with Coptic families would be subject to dietary restrictions.

Marlene Baker, communications director at AFS headquarters in New York, declined to discuss McCullum's experience. She referred calls to the program's lawyer in Portland, Patricia Peard, who said she could not comment on McCullum's case because of the potential for a lawsuit.

McCullum said his host family gave him only meager amounts of food, and his condition worsened during the last seven weeks, when the family observed a fast limiting the amount of animal protein he was given.

The host family was a couple with two younger boys and a daughter who was in the U.S. on an AFS exchange. McCullum said the parents gave him the smallest food portions, hid treats in their bedroom and complained that the cost of his upkeep was more than they spent for their daughter when she was home.

The host father, Shaker Hanna, rejected McCullum's story as "a lie," suggesting that he made it up because his parents were hoping to recover some of the money they paid for his stay as compensation.

"The truth is, the boy we hosted for nearly six months was eating for an hour and a half at every meal. The amount of food he ate at each meal was equal to six people," Hanna said. He added that the boy was active, constantly exercising and playing sports.

Hanna, an engineer, said his family went out of its way to prepare special foods, including fish and chicken, for McCullum during the fast periods.

McCullum disputes that. The family served meat early in his stay, he said, but that ended during the fast period. He said he never got breakfast and his first food of the day usually was a small piece of bread with cucumbers and cheese that he would take to school for lunch. There was a late-afternoon dinner consisting of beans, vegetables and sometimes fish, and a snack of bread later in the evening.

McCullum sometimes bought food, but at one point was reduced to stealing it from a supermarket. He was caught, but the store accepted the small amount of money he had and let him go.

Still, McCullum did not complain to his parents. His father suspects he may have fallen victim to Stockholm syndrome, in which people start to feel a sense of loyalty to those who victimize them.

McCullum's parents first sensed that something was amiss shortly before Christmas, when they got e-mails from their son and one of his teachers about seeking a new host family. They also saw a picture of him on Facebook indicating he had lost a lot of weight.

In early January, the teacher sent another e-mail saying McCullum was "in bad shape" and "really, really NEEDS to go home."

The McCullums said AFS provided false assurances that he had seen a doctor and was in excellent health. After AFS arranged Jonathan's flight home, he happened to sit next to Sen. Susan Collins on the final leg, from New York to Portland.

"I was struck by how extraordinarily thin he was," Collins recalled. "He was just a stick. He was so emaciated and gaunt."

AFS, a nonprofit formerly known as American Field Service, is one of the largest and oldest organizers of student exchanges. Since its founding as an ambulance corps during World War I, the agency has arranged exchanges for 325,000 American and foreign students from more than 50 countries.

The McCullums said AFS discourages parents from telephoning or e-mailing their kids abroad, believing the distraction would run counter to the program's goal of immersing them in local culture.

"They told us to have as little contact as possible, and we bought into it," Elizabeth McCullum said. She said she had confidence in AFS, regarding it as "the gold standard" of exchange programs, but now is aware that things can go terribly wrong.

The Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students, a nonprofit advocacy group, said the exchange programs are rampant with instances of abuse and neglect.

"This is not an isolated incident. I'm aghast but I'm not shocked," the committee's director, Danielle Grijalva of Oceanside, Calif., said after hearing McCullum's story.

An industry accreditation group, the Council for Standards for International Educational Travel in Alexandria, Va., takes a different view, noting that roughly 30,000 foreign students a year participate in exchange programs in the U.S., while 3,000 Americans go abroad.

In the context of those numbers, incidents like Jonathan's are rare, Executive Director John Hishmeh said. "It's not common, it's not the norm and it's not a growing trend," he said.

The McCullums are considering a lawsuit. David McCullum expressed concern about the long-term physical and psychological effects on his son. "Someone needs to be held accountable, and I would like someone to say, 'I'm sorry."'

Jonathan McCullum is recovering and recently went snowboarding with friends. He plans to return to school in the fall, rejoin the soccer team and eventually study to be a doctor.

Despite the ordeal, he has not soured on foreign travel: He wants to visit Zimbabwe this summer as part of a volunteer program to build homes and trails.

  • Lethal dose is an estimate based on documented case (54 yr. old man died after ingesting 10g of caffeine in pill form).
  • Lethal dose depends on body weight and caffeine sensitivity.
  • Ingesting caffeine from food/drinks takes longer than pills so the lethal dose would be higher in most cases due to biological halflife.
  • Caffeine intoxication can begin at 400mg and hospitalization at 2g of caffeine.

If your brain works normally this is neat.

This is another example of an amazing illusion!!! The last sentence is so true.
If your eyes follow the m ovement of the rotating pink dot, the dots will remain only one color, pink.

(you need to click on the pic to see the animation, then follow the instructions)
However i f you stare at the black "
+" in the center, the moving dot turns to green.

Now, concentrate
only the black " + " in the center of the picture. After a short period, all the pink dots will slowly disapp ear, and you will only see only a single green dot rotating.?? The trick is DON'T BLINK when you concentrate on the black + (to see only the green dot)!

It's amazing how our brain works. There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear. This should be proof enough, we don't always see what we think we see.
Send this to all of your friends and amaze them.

Saleen S5 Raptor to debut at New York auto show

Saleen, maker of countless Mustang-based hot rods and the S7 racecar, will unveil a midengine sports car concept at the 2008 New York Auto Show in March.

Unlike the roughly $700,000 S7, which was a purpose-built racecar that was occasionally licensed for the street, the S5S Raptor is a vision for the "premium performance market with segment-leading horsepower." In other words, this will be a sports car designed primarily for the street instead of the track. Saleen says power will come from a supercharged 5.0-liter engine that runs on E85 ethanol. We expect that the Raptor's motor will be based on the supercharged 5.0-liter Ford-based V8 that already powers the company's S302E Mustang-based car. In the S302E, the engine is rated at 620 horsepower. That should give it the necessary oomph to make it to the 200 mph top speed Saleen is estimating.

The body, which looks in the sketch provided here like a very muscular Lotus Exige, would be fitted to an aluminum space frame. Chief Technical Officer Chris Theodore has been earlier quoted as saying the company could be interested in producing a car in the $150,000 range, so we would expect that the Raptor, if it makes it to production, will be somewhere in that range. Incidentally, Theodore has some experience with $150,000 Ford-powered, midengine sports cars. He was a driving force behind the creation of the Ford GT while he was a vice president with the Dearborn, Michigan carmaker.

Will Saleen build it? The company claims that it will be gauging reaction to the concept from its dealers, the media and attendees at the New York auto show. Theodore says that the Raptor could make it to market within two to three years from the time it gets the green light.

What this means to you: The S7 never made much sense to us because we don't own a Le Mans race team, but an all-American Ferrari fighter? That's intriguing. — Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit

California: Legalize Pot In 2008

Post Spacer
The well known marijuana legalization activist Jack Herer is leading an initiative to get marijuana legalization on the 2008 November ballot in California.

According to Jack Herer’s website, “This initiative will legalize Cannabis Hemp for (a) industrial products, (b) medicinal preparations, (c) nutritional products, (d) religious and spiritual products, and (e) recreational and euphoric use and products.”

In addition, the initiative would provide for immediate amnesty and release from prison for any persons jailed for marijuana related offenses by the state of California.

They are going to need 400,000+ signatures from California residents by April, which they are already well on their way to achieving.

For more information on Jack Herer and his cause please visit Jack Herer’s Website.

New Hampshire May Be The 13th State To Decriminalize Marijuana

Post Spacer
New Hampshire may be the next state to decriminalize marijuana, following the lead of 12 states so far, as two New Hampshire legislators from Nashua have filed the legislation papers. The bill is to be voted on next month by the state House of Representatives, and would decrease the penalty for small amounts of marijuana to a $200 civil fine.

The news comes at a time when the general sentiment about pot of the American people is shifting. Almost half of the United States population has at least experimented with pot, and while many still believe it should not be fully legalized, having a criminal record for pot is beginning to seem more and more excessive.

The debate will be lively with many supporters and opponents of the legislation. The opposition of the bill feels that decreasing the penalties for marijuana possession will encourage its use among the younger generations and cause them to believe that using marijuana is ok.

I do agree with people who say smoking pot all day all the time will lead to a lazy and unfulfilling life. That is why it is our responsibility as parents, friends, brothers, sisters, and people to educate each other about moderation in all parts of life. While there are many risks associated with marijuana, there are also many benefits.

Even for those of us that are not citizens of New Hampshire, the future of marijuana’s legal status is close to the hearts of many. Personally I support the decriminalization, and full legalization would benefit the country greatly in new tax revenues and reduced law enforcement costs. Even though I am not from New Hampshire, I whole-heartedly believe in their motto “Live Free or Die!” and to me part of being free is having the right to make your own decisions.

Toyota unveils sexy new hybrid sports car

WINSTON TAN

February 25, 2008 02:30pm

TOYOTA has launched a new vehicle which combines the slickness of a sports car with a petrol-electric hybrid engine.

The car manufacturer launched its Future Toyota Hybrid Sports (FT-HS) concept today, and said the vehicle would provide both ultra high performance and ultra low fuel use and emissions.

Toyota's manager of product development Doug Soden said the new vehicle showed that hybrids could be made not only for the masses but from a sports perspective as well.

"There is a stronger need for hybrid vehicles to be on the market, or much more fuel efficient vehicles," Mr Soden said.

"Whichever way you look at it, whether it is a petrol-electric or hydrogen-electric, there needs to be that hybrid interface."

Produced by Toyota's research and design team in California, the FT-HS mates an electric motor to a 3.5-litre petrol engine. Toyota says its front engine, rear drive layout provides optimum performance, reaching speeds of 100 km/h in around four seconds.

"What we're able to do is use a smaller capacity engine in conjunction with the hybrid transmission and electric motor ... (and) give the same performance as a vehicle with a ... larger engine," Mr Soden said.

Bearing a resemblance to Kitt from the sci-fi TV series Knight Rider, Toyota design manager Nicolas Hogios said the car was a "mind-blowing design".

"It's very edgy ... a portal or a vision into the future for Toyota design."

Toyota corporate manager Greg Gardner said the FT-HS showed hybrid vehicles didn't need to be boring and conservative.

"As well as environmental benefits, they could also be fun to drive," Mr Gardner said.

He said there could be a day when a hybrid vehicle sporting a lightweight design was taking the track in a Formula One race.

"Particularly with European customers being very aware of the environment, a hybrid race car is the way to go. We've had the (hybrid) Supra win a 24-hour race in Japan, so we can just transfer that technology across to F1," Mr Gardner said.

The car will be on display at the Melbourne International Motor Show from this Friday.

However, those planning to head to their local car yard to pick up the vehicle, will have to wait a little while.

"This is really a concept car, so we'll judge reaction to that," Mr Gardner said.

"Toyota can turn a car around pretty quickly, so for this kind of vehicle we are looking four to five years down the track."

Mr Soden said there would be a day when fully electric vehicles had mass appeal, but it still might be some time away.

"There is a market in the future for pure electric vehicles. However, their usability is going to be quite limited from the distance you can travel, and from the infrastructure which you have to put in place in order to have a powerpoint to recharge the vehicle wherever you are," Mr Soden said.

"In the end, it will happen though, especially for metropolitan short distance driving."

NASA Takes Aim at Moon with Double Sledgehammer

Scientists are priming two spacecraft to slam into the moon's South Pole to see if the lunar double whammy reveals hidden water ice.

The Earth-on-moon violence may raise eyebrows, but NASA's history shows that such missions can yield extremely useful scientific observations.

"I think that people are apprehensive about it because it seems violent or crude, but it's very economical," said Tony Colaprete, the principal investigator for the mission at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif.

NASA's previous Lunar Prospector mission detected large amounts of hydrogen at the moon's poles before crashing itself into a crater at the lunar South Pole. Now the much larger Lunar Crater and Observation Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission, set for a February 2009 moon crash, will take aim and discover whether some of that hydrogen is locked away in the form of frozen water.

LCROSS will piggyback on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission for an Oct. 28 launch atop an Atlas 5 rocket equipped with a Centaur upper stage. While the launch will ferry LRO to the moon in about four days, LCROSS is in for a three-month journey to reach its proper moon smashing position. Once within range, the Centaur upper stage doubles as the main 4,400 pound (2,000 kg) impactor spacecraft for LCROSS.

The smaller Shepherding Spacecraft will guide Centaur towards its target crater, before dropping back to watch - and later fly through - the plume of moon dust and debris kicked up by Centaur's impact. The shepherding vehicle is packed with a light photometer, a visible light camera and four infrared cameras to study the Centaur's lunar plume before it turns itself into a second impactor and strikes a different crater about four minutes later.

"This payload delivery represents a new way of doing business for the center and the agency in general," said Daniel Andrews, LCROSS project manager at Ames, in a statement. "LCROSS primarily is using commercial-off-the-shelf instruments on this mission to meet the mission's accelerated development schedule and cost restraints."

Figuring out the final destinations for the $79 million LCROSS mission is "like trying to drive to San Francisco and not knowing where it is on the map," Colaprete said. He and other mission scientists hope to use observations from LRO and the Japanese Kaguya (Selene) lunar orbiter to map crater locations before LCROSS dives in.

"Nobody has ever been to the poles of the moon, and there are very unique craters - similar to Mercury - where sunlight doesn't reach the bottom," Colaprete said. Earth-based radar has also helped illuminate some permanently shadowed craters. By the time LCROSS arrives, it can zero in on its 19 mile (30 km) wide targets within 328 feet (100 meters).

Scientists want the impactor spacecraft to hit smooth, flat areas away from large rocks, which would ideally allow the impact plume to rise up out of the crater shadows into sunlight. That in turn lets LRO and Earth-based telescopes see the results.

"By understanding what's in these craters, we're examining a fossil record of the early solar system and would occurred at Earth 3 billion years ago," Colaprete said. LCROSS is currently aiming at target craters Faustini and Shoemaker, which Colaprete likened to "fantastic time capsules" at 3 billion and 3.5 billion years old.

LCROSS researchers anticipate a more than a 90 percent chance that the impactors will find some form of hydrogen at the poles. The off-chance exists that the impactors will hit a newer crater that lacks water - yet scientists can learn about the distribution of hydrogen either way.

"We take [what we learn] to the next step, whether it's rovers or more impactors," Colaprete said.

This comes as the latest mission to apply brute force to science.

The Deep Impact mission made history in 2005 by sending a probe crashing into comet Tempel 1. Besides Lunar Prospector's grazing strike on the moon in 1999, the European Space Agency's Smart-1 satellite dove more recently into the lunar surface in 2006.

LCROSS will take a much more head-on approach than either Lunar Prospector or Smart-1, slamming into the moon's craters at a steep angle while traveling with greater mass at 1.6 miles per second (2.5 km/s). The overall energy of the impact will equal 100 times that of Lunar Prospector and kick up 1,102 tons of debris and dust.

"It's a cost-effective, relatively low-risk way of doing initial exploration," Colaprete said, comparing the mission's approach to mountain prospectors who used crude sticks of dynamite to blow up gully walls and sift for gold. Scientists are discussing similar missions for exploring asteroids and planets such as Mars.

Nevertheless, Colaprete said they "may want to touch the moon a bit more softly" after LCROSS has its day.
